sliver which has never been refuted so thoroughly ns it ought to be is that the value of gold ns a money metal is derived chiefly if not wholly from the legislation which reg ulates its coinage and makes it a legal tender for the payment of debts Hence tho sllverites arguo that to silver nlso could be given any value which Cod gr era might fix and that it could thus bo raised from being worth the thirtieth part of gold to a sixteenth or any other fraction It has been very pertinently asked of them why if the law can make sixteen ounces of silver equal in value to one of gold it cannot make tho two metals of equal valuo ounce for ounce but to this inquiry they do not deign to reply Nor havo they undertaken to demonstrate how the law which can indeed prescribe in what coin debts shall be gold paying countries it had a purchasing power sometimes of only 40 per cent of Its faco valuo It would be tho samo under free coinage with the silver dollar compared to tho gold dollar That gold has a commercial value as n metal eqnal to its present coining valuo and that it would retain that value with Â¬ in a small fraction If every law relating to its use as money wero repealod has been most vehemently denied by many sllyerites and bimetallism They say that as all values are regulated by supply and demand and that as the demand for gold to be used by money is unllinitod it only needs to destroy this demand to reduce its value one hair or eveu more Conversely they insist that if freo coin- Â¬ age at any agreed ratio wero granted to silver the demand for it thus created would give it a new and Increased value restoring it to the position which it oc- Â¬ cupied twenty two years ago All this Is unmitigated nonsense and proceeds from an ignorance of facts For example the consumption of gold in the arts and for manufacturing pur Â¬ poses so far from being insignificant is very large It has bcon asserted that if gold cead to be used for money thero Is enough of It In existence to supply the demand of commerce for a thousand that the fresh yearly supplies yeara of U would glut the market and bring the value of the metal dowu to almost nothing The truth on the contrary Is and the more intelligent advocates of Â¬ jft I the silver It is fair to explain that tho estimate hero given of tho consumption of gold includes thnt of old gold and of coin and that it is largt r than gold is worked up Into ornaments or is used by dentists or is beaten into leaves for gilding it ceases to be available as manufacturing material Labor and skill have added to it a valuo too great for
