Lets Invasion of Maryland in September 1802 a copy of his plans and tho disposition of his troops was found in tho road over which his army had passed and was brought to General McCIellan It was perhaps the first time in history that any commander had the advantage of such a disclosure of tho movements of the enemy A similar piece of good fortune has just happened to the silver coinage case It is a letter from Hon J Sterling Mor- Â¬ ton Secretary of Agriculture to his brother gold bug the Honorable John DeWitt Warner recently a member of Congress from New York accompanied by a letter written to Mr Morton by another active and zalous soldier in the ranks of the rnonometallista It is a most important revelation of the panic in tho ranks of the goldlnen of the West and n frantic appeal to the Eastern ban kers to do something tegjtem the tide in coinage It appears favor of silver from Secretary Mortons letter that he has been engaged in feeding the patont inside newspapers out letter of Mr Buchanan is to give you a thorough-going business mans views of the situation The lettershows how fallacies flourish among the financiers of the West and South The letter also points out in thflr platforms or elso a disgraceful straddle No doubt you have seen a little hook Joins published In Chiiagoh called School of Finance The first book has reached an edition of over 1 0000 and recently another book of tho same kind issued fiom the same mill has appealed They aro attractively written and to tho novice in financo aro a convincing argu- Â¬ ment They pretcud to quoto eminent financiers of Chicago and elsowherp as for instance Lyman J Gage Joseph Medill and others as injecting objec tions embodying their most formidable argument and then proceed to answer them effectively and to complete silence Now this little book I find from nuns dealers is sold ten to one to any other It Is sold and read on traipa to a disgust ing extent It is a most entertaining little volume and I seo it being rend on trains in dopots discussed in local lyceums Ac everywhere It is sweeping over this country and in my opinion should bo answered by some ono who fully understands the subject that an sner should bo written with an equally facile pen I understand this little book has been purchased in large numbers by sliver people and distributed gratituous ly I do not know this but I do know that it was on the market here at 10 cents per copy and sold immensely It seems to me tho banking interests should take the requisite steps to publish a reply in equally attractive form and put it on tho market at lowest price as per- Â¬ reply to Coins an antidote haps School of Finance Ac To show the effect of this little hook a rather intelligent country banker called on mo recently with the book and asked mo if I could answer it saying ho was nearly convinced there was hope in the policy suggested and this against his will and it was r ad and then talked in his county and was making votes more rapidly than anything ho had over known I toferred hlmto ouibankers here lie said later he had talked with some one who passed it ov er lightl and did not reply My judgment from the present outlook is the Kastern conservatives of both par- Â¬ ties are likely to unite and possibly re Â¬ nominate Mr Cleveland who would carry the East and South no doubt tho East on his ablo conservatism and tho South because they could never voto other than tho Domocratic ticket thus insuring a vote which would elect and the West will undoubtedly support a Populist or free silverite unless there is a great change If this is not done I feel tho election will bo thrown into the House as the result of three tickets being in the field iu which case tho bat anco of power would be with tho free silver interests I believo a vote to day silver on tho naked question of a platform Nebraska would give it a major Â¬ ity of 50000 or nearly The suggestions are for what informa- Â¬ tion you may bo able to tho country Tho Reform Club had supposed that they wero holding this thing down but here comes ono of their own men tells them that the arguments of the sil Â¬ ver men can not bo answered by the who go to Congress as an occupation may in ordinary times disappoint their constituents as many have done and allow the money power to control them to the breaking of their own pledges made to tho
