Hor Friends and the Roadorsof the News INCIDENTS OF THE TRIP w morning of Feb and I took our leavo of homo and friends for a trip to the far west We reached Louisville Ky at 1 oclock remained in the city until in Ac afternoon of the next day at 3 oclock We took the Southern Pacific at Tenth and Broadway for New Orleans in company with Mrs Wigington who was bo full of life and jokes that I soon got rid of a spell of the blues thatcame ever me about noon that day The train stopped about ten minutes at Elizabeth town whero wo had a pleasant chat with Mr and Mrs A nut and little Nolto We pissed through Tennessee at night I was anxious to see Galiton as I had heard my step mother speak so often of Noth- Â¬ a sister of hers who lived thero ing occurred of interest until we reached Birmingham Ala there wo could boo roller flouring mills steam laundry and bakeries all lighted up and at work Twas Looked as if the city was on fire there that we left the snow and cold the next day as we passed through the country we could see for miles the beau- Â¬ tiful grey moss hanging from the tops of the trees almost touching tho ground also the magnolia trees olives live oak The pormeda is and permeda bush very much like the palm leaf We crossed Tenntssee and Alabama rivers pass Â¬ ed through many nice towns such as Mississippi City Pass Christian Bay St Louis titc We reached Mobile the 0th inst at noon We were there quito a little while where the train stopped for dinner We saw threo hundred or more sailboats on Mobile bay We had to cross a great deal of water in fact you could Bee nothing but water for several miles We were enjoying tho scenery and our trip very much when the con Â¬ ductor threw a gloom over ua by saying that we had to separate at New Orleans That my ticket was over the Southern Pacific and Mrs Wigingtons over the JFfxas Pacific that being tho case we de Â¬ cided to remain over night in the city We asked at the depot for a flrst class hotel We wont as directed soon found that we had made a mistake but con- Â¬ cluded to make the best of a bad situa- Â¬ tion and enjoyed our stay very much tinderthe circumstances The next morning both train and peoÂ¬ ple were transferred on a boat across the Mississippi river After the train had started I began to feel somewhat lonely About that time Mr Balrd one of our drummers recognized Bay and I and He travel- Â¬ came over to whero we were ed quite a little distance with us was very kind ate lunch with us just before ho reached his stopping place Wishing us a pleasant safe trip he bid us good Â¬ bye We were now in the Cotton Belt in Loutsana I beean tq notice the cotton plantations We saw all kinds of early Vegetables noticed that the dirt was thrown up in hills around tracts of land I asked an old gentleman who sat in front of mo why that was done He said they used what was called a push plow to throw up the dirt around the rice that it required very wet soil Tho water was pumped from Mean Tower river and Cane ground was fixed Acadia Parrish the same way except the water was pumped out instead Tho sugar cane re- Â¬ quired dry soil and there waa a great Tho cane made into deal ofit raised sugar and molasses and shipped WcBt where thoy bought all of their eatables and feed for their horses and cattle You see but little Umber in Louisiana Wo reached Jew Ibera late in tho afternoon of the 7th New Ibera la a nice little city with fifteen thousand in Â¬ habitants You can see th beautiful cemetery from the car window seven miles from the town la a Bait mine that has no end We can also see Spanish Devils river is three hundred feot high and n mile long Saturday the Otb we reached Rio Grande Station a linn looking place taken up by the Mexicans Their houses wero built of sticks and ditt At noon wo reached Elpaso Texas the placo I had longed to see as my hus- Â¬ band and brothor were there In business Twas two years ago for a short timo there that my dearest friend and cousin Mrs Charlie Hoyser had gone for her health after which she soon died As I looked at the strange people and even the house where they had lived many sad things crowded my memory I could hardly keep backs the tears I left my things in tho waiting room took Ray walked a square and a half to the street car went over into Old Mexico A gentleman formally from Kentucky pointed out the old church three hund- Â¬ red years old tho lottery building cus- Â¬ tom house etc Wo wero gone sorao little time but got back just in timo for the train The Mexicans wero at the depot dressd in colors with their fancy sabers inviting the people to remain over until tho next day to see tho best bull fight they bad ever had in Old Mexico The train only passed through a small Consequently portion of New Mexico We we saw but little of the country could see the beautiful mountains cov- Â¬ ered with snow while the thermometer Saturday was about 80 where we wore By this night found us in Arizonia time I had mado the acquaintance of nine persons who enjoyed talking about tho country scenery etc as much as I did Threo couples wero hunting homes Tho trains were crowed with eastern people going west Somo to one state some to another I met one couple from Kalamazoo Mich another from South Dakota and another from South Missouri and still another from Cleveland 0 The trip through Arizo- Â¬ nia was somewhat unpleasant twas veiy warm dry and dusty We took breakfast Sunday morning at Yuma the hottest place iu the United States We then crossed Colorado river into California We saw nothing of in- Â¬ terest for some distance At last we iw mirage imitation of water you imag- Â¬ ined you could see a beautiful stream of water but some one on the train who knew said tho ground was perfectly dry We next arrived at Volcano Springs hot boiling water coming up out of tho ground two hundred and sixty feet be- Â¬ low Bea level Next we came to Salton where the earth is as white as if It was covered with snow We saw this for several miles and in some places the earth is black and sleek liko slate We saw nothing but dry bunches of grass no trees or shrubs to be seen the mount Â¬ ains are on either side miles away At Indlowe saw an Artesian well twelve hundred feet deep Nearly a hundred miles furthor on we saw tho mountain called San Juan Indio Spanish name eleven thousand feet above sea lovel We saw a snow storm on tho mountain while it was like a summer day with us Ita beauty I could never describe In going around this mountain an extra engine was used making slow speed When we arrived at a station called White Water somo ono remarked that the mountains were only fifty feet from us another who knew said they wero a mile and a half away Wo saw a rain bow on a mountain that looked as if it was right on the ground At Banning wemw all kinds of fruit trees for the first Apricots olive pears etc time spruce fences or hedges also Eeyptian corn raised for chicken Jeed We reached Beaumont twenty at 4 oclock Sunday afternoon We then go down twenty threo hundred feet after which wo crsscd Santon river and get more and more interested in California Wo then saw nice orange groves the limbs hanging to the ground and bushels of nice oranges rottening A gentleman bought at Cotton Station a nice basket of oranges for 2o cents Sunday evening at 7 oclock wo reach Â¬ ed Los Angeles Our party together formerly of with Mr Huddleston Dokotn III but who makes his homo at Los Angelep stopped at tho Natick House whero we wero entertained roy- Â¬ ally had everything nice to eat a pleas- Â¬ ant room and every attention necessary at reasonable rates Tho next morning I learned that all of our party had de- Â¬ cided to remain several weeks con- Â¬ sequently the first thing they did was to hunt rooms so that left Ray and I alone As I was anxious to see the city and only ductor and told him that I wasastranger and would like to see tho best part of the city He told me that his car would tako me to West Lake Park a beautiful place bIx miles out After reaching tlo park watching the ducks swim looking at the lovely il iwers etc I took another car to Boll Heights a lovely cemetry then to the eastern part of the city We were very nearly to tho end of the lino when the conductor told us that one of tho cables had broken and if we wero in a hurry we had better take the mule cur which would take us to tho Western part of the city We all walked to the corner and whilo waiting for tho car I remarked to a gentleman that that was a He said lovely homo on the corner I told yes Are you a stranger here him I was He said go over and look at the orchard and flowers I know the people and they will not care I walked over rapped at tho door and a lady came out I asked if she was tho lady of the house said she was I told her that I had been invited by a gentleman to come and look at her flowers She said cer-Â¬ tainly you can look at them and pluck any thing you wish except from tho roso tree pointing to tho tree and then turned to Ray and said little girl you can have all tlifl oranges you want We gathered a few nice rose buds and four nice oranges As I stood on tip toe to reach tho largo rose buds thought of my friends at home and wished they could seo tho many beautiful flowers of every kind and gather some of them As I went on my lost round through tho city saw tho beautiful flowers green grass etc I wondered if Los Angeles wasnt something akin to Paradise Tho streets were so level that the boys were out on roller skates Tho men out with their lawn mowers cutting grass that was bo green and prttty that it looked like After dinner Mr Huddleston velvet kindly offered to take mo to see the City Park Court house Chamber of Com- Â¬ merce Library Building St Vincent College Green Houses etc I found from going into some of the stores that things could bo bought as cheap as in Kentucky I also learned that during tho months of May and June that they call Lafrlcsta Tho little girls dress in fine flowers have their horses decorated and ride in procession with sweet music We arrived at the hotel just in timo for supper then took tho buss for tho depot and tho train for Oakland Reached Oakland at 7 oclock Tuesday evening Brother Rlcliard met mo at tho depot A nice dinner was served a 7i3Q oclock at Mr Kimbles where my brother and family board The next evening Mr Charlie Sawyer from San Francisco formally from Cloverport called to eee us and Invited Mrs Owen and I to din Â¬ ner the next evening which wo accept- Â¬ We had to go part of the way on ed the train then on a largo boat across San Francisco Bay An Italian band stays on each boat and furnishes sweet music for the passengers Mr Sawyer met us at the landing and took ua nearly all over the city upjn the Mills building ten stories high whero wo could Bee nearly all over the city Next to China- Â¬ town where we saw many strange things and bought somo curiosities then to his house where an elegant dinner was We served in courses at 030 oclock then went back to Oakland which is a nice pretty city Mrs Owen and I the next day vinited the cemetery In Oakland The gardnera were pruning the trees roecs etc and carrying out the cuttings by the cart load It I had been ou my way home I would have gathered many nice slips Feb 13th we took a nice lunch went oyer Into San Francisco visited Sutio Height a nlee bark and residence own ed by theMayor of the city From there tq Cliff Hotiee on tlfe beach Saw Pacltte Ocean sea lions on the rocks watched the waves roll In for some time We could had swings s and all kinds of amuse- Â¬ We then started ment for the children for home on tho way wo stopped at tho Board of Trade a large fruit exibit On tho morning of the 18th I left for Sacramento My brother Richard hav- Â¬ ing gone tho day before met me at tho depot at Sacramento Wq took a buss for tho Western Hotel had a nice dinner then wont out to vlow tho city Wo visited tho capitol building which is twelve stories high from which we could We visited Beo plainly the wholo city some of tho stores then to the hotel from thero to the depot whero we took tho train for Red Bluff Wu nirlvedat My brother Dr Red Bluff at 8 oclock Owen whom I had not seen for seven years was at tho depot with a hack to meet us Wo went to his home where a nlco lunch was ready for us prepared by his kind hearted little wife We dis- Â¬ cussed tho post and present until a late hour Thursday evening after my arriv Â¬ al we wero invited to a tea with ono of tho wealthiest families in the country I attended suppers and teas most of tho first week The second week was taken up largely in receiving and returning calls Red Bluff is a nice town of three thousand inhabitants From my window I can seo Mount Sinister fourteen hundred feet above sea lovel covered with eternal snow also Mount Losson a hundred miles away containing a great many springs a boiling mud lake a quarter of a mile across also a large arcu crude sulphur Bcatterep over the ground this lias been named by Californlans Buspus hell The people hero are real nice and They have nlco churches sociable schools and dwellings I havnt been in a church in California that has not been decorated with flowers A few nights after I came hero a man was murdered only a block away In his own house Fruit In this part of tho state costs There moro than it docs in Kentucky are large orange groves all over the state with hundreds of bushels of oranges rot- Â¬ tening Tho railroad company have things there own way Thero is strong talk of another road Wednesday the 2Cth Mr Dave Do Haven who lives eighteen miles in the country sent a nice spring wagon in for his daughter Miss Nettie Mrs Owen the children and myself Wo enjoyed going across tho plains passscd through several sheep and turkey ranches AVe took bedding and camped out Mr Do Havens ranche contains six thousand acres of land situated on Klden creek Our time was spent in cooking eating fishing gathering flowers and pretty rocks Mr DoIIaven has four thousand sheep Ho took us in a wagon to seo them Tho children enjoyed Baiting tho sbeep and looking at the Httlo lambs Mr Ned DoIIaven lives with his broth Â¬ er He looks as natural as when ho left Kentucky only somo older He left Dave De seventeen years ago Mr Haven left thirty nine years ago and was six months on tho way traveled in an ox wagon It is very interesting to hear His fight with him tell of his journey tho Indians on the plains and his bear fight which ho bears to this day after which ho came near dying He crawled to his camp and was very ill lor threo weeks The two brothers and two sons live alone do their own cooking wash- Â¬ ing etc Thoy seemed to enjoy our visit very much After our return home wo resumed calling receiving calls etc I havent visited Vina yet where thero is tho largest winery In the world nor Tascan Springs seven miles east of town whero people visit during the summer season for
