a thorough reorganization To tliis com- Â¬ plexion has less than two years of in- Â¬ capable leadership reduced a great army and a noble cause that upon lines of conviction swept the country in 1800 and 1892 The victory of the Republicans has been so far reaching and complete as to sink mere personal incidents and local influences quite out of sight There will be a special tale to tell to account for a particular defeat here and there and for the reduction of this or that majority but the Democratic collapse is too universal to bo ascribed to anything other than universal and profound dissatisfaction Never in the history ot the coun- Â¬ try have the peoplo been eo disappointed in work of their own doing and nevor before did they make such haste to undo it With souio the object of distrust has been tbo administration with others the congress with all tho party organ zttiou wherever it showed itself Tho industrial panic was succeeded by a political panic and panics of all sorts aro unreasloning They can only bo met and turned by quick resolute action and this quick reeoluto action was wholly lacking at Washington and everywhere else The president set the pace of disaffection It waa eagerly taken up by the rank and file Faction once in the saddle rode booted and spurred down the Democratic column toppling over In IU mad career the Juet and the unjust the meritorious and Wo shall indulgo no splenetic outcry or childish quibble In a country like ours tho ups and downs of party are of less account when wo reflect how ready the people are to change and to forget After all it is their government and they can do with it whaUoever they will If thoy want to reverse the engines and to go back twenty years to the dark days of Republican misrule nobody can pro vent them If they want back tho Mc Kinley bill which they repudiated thoy can have it If thoy want back the fed- Â¬ eral election laws which they repealed they can re enact them But wo appre Â¬ hend none of thtso things We are passing through the era of the common placo and It does not much matter whether wo are represented in tho offices by a set of beggars labeling themselves Republicans or a set of laggards labeling themselves Democrats so long as one set is afraid and the other set dare not to tamper with the public credit and integrity Tho Democratic party has survived even greater reverses than this IU life has BUrely been preserved for good pur- Â¬ pose It has fallen upon grievous times and into gruesome hands If out of this disaster we take lessons of high emprlso if it rids us of
