Minnesota linve caused nn awful loss of life tho full ex tent of which cannot bo known for sev- ¬ eral days and perhaps not for weeks Tho town of Hinckley Minn about half way between this city and Dtihith la tljjj worst snilerer but many towns in that vicinity have been burned A passenger train which approached Hinckley and nns compelled to back five miles on account of tho flames caught firo from Hying embers and was consum- ¬ ed The passengers took refuge in a swamp but wero there made prisoners by the lire A few of the passengers secured a hand car and made tho run through the burning many peo ple aro repotted dead who may bo in safety Had not this number of people largely women and children left tho doomed city when they did the loss of life would have increased in a geometri- ¬ cal ratio for their presence would have added immeasurably to tho subsequent confusion About tho samo hour the accomoda- ¬ tion train on the Hinckley and St Cloud branch left for tho latter placo with about 25 passengers Its path lay direct ¬ ly across the path of tho firo and their situation spcedly became desperato Tho tits wero burning tho rails were warping and tho trestles wero sagging under just across the trackB About i oclock in tho afternoon the lire literally jumped into tho town Its approach was not gradual It did not cat its way along devouring everything in its path but caino in firebrands high in tho air and carrying them for- ¬ ward for from 40 to 80 rods to fall mid 1 gin the work of devastation anew ¬ ¬ Tho people who wero left hi tho city wore in what seemed to bo an almost hopeless condition Egress by tho only means of transportation that could hopo to distance tho swiftly advancing lames was out of tho question Tho men had heeli fighting tho fire for hours and tho women and children wero in a tmnic stickcti condition Many of them wero of the igticrant of tho population for a very largo perccntago of the peoplo who got out on the Great Northern Itallroad class wero of tho more intelligent Horses weio harnessed to buggies and Women and children were wagons hurriedly loaded In soino cases at ¬ tempts were made to carry of some houshold goods but in most instances tho peoplo had no thought for aught but their lives Probably 200 of them left town on foot or in vehicles plunging into tho woods to tho north across tho Grindstone river which skirts the town on tho north They wero literally fleeing before tho pursuing demon of firo Over the hill that rises beyond tho Grindstone is a swamp and to this most of tho peoplo with teams headed but it proved no protection Tho fire gave thorn no opportunity to go further Somo abandoned their teams and ran in- ¬ to the lower portions of the morass but tho fire sought them out Not ono was left to tell tho tale and thero this morn- inp in a space of a little more than fivo acres wero counted ovr 130 corpses There were many families of fivo six and soven and thero they lay tho man generally a little in advance the mother surrounded by her little ones cut off by tho most horrible of deaths Nearly ail the bodies woro nudo tho firo having burned every vestige of their clothing and blackened and charred many of tho corpses beyond recognition and where whole families wero wiped out as they were and some of the bodies completely incinerated identification is absolutely out of the question Thoso who
