public mind after his support of Greeley in 1872 and Holt may bo said to liavo retiied from the stage of action after the execution of tho findings of that celebrated court mar- Â¬ tial with which his name is inseparably linked Even if ho only did his duty as a public olHcial that trial was an irrepar- Â¬ able misfortune to him and an ever- Â¬ lasting regret to tho country Joseph was n wonderful man with a splendid intellect and a mighty genius as an orator After his education at St Jospplirt and at Centre he opened a law olllie in ElizAbethtown where ho met in forensic combat such men as llowan Wicklille Hardin Hayes and Guthrie That was in 1828 the year Old Hickory Ho was then llrat Bwept tho country the pride and wonder of tho Democratic party of that vicinity though scarce a voter
