one night three weeks ago The cir cumstances are as follows She was housekeeper at the parsonage Her brother the priest was away for the night Another brother Caslmer was stopping at the priests residence Father Walser a priest of too Pre cious Blood society with headquart guestHismans with the key on his side Father Walser and Caslmer the brother had been drinking in the eve ning and d evar room of Caslmer the brother and waling him Informed him that burglars were in the house he Father Walser claiming that he had seen the man as he had opened the door leading between the girls room and his own and peered In with a dark lantern In his hand Excitedly the priest said What are you doing hero Get out of here as quick as you can The man then ran through an attic and Is supposed to have caped through the attic window down a ladder within ten feet of the fero cious dog The dog did not bark The questions nere arise How does it happen that the door was unlocked between the girls room and Father Walsers and why did not the dog noted for his watchfulness bark and show his usual viciousness when bur glars were setting up a ladder right under his nose The brother Caslmer after trying to get a view of the burglar but see Ing nobody went to his sisters room and found her dead and her skull looked farther and found a ladder leading from the attic window down to the ground near the fero clous dog who was as quiet as a brother ran out and telephoned to tho police Returning Father Wnl ser who seemed to be unnerved said cannot say mass tomorrow unless break my fast and have a stlmu lant As everything in the house had been emptied Caslmer took a gallon jug to a nearby saloon and got it fill ed A pint or a quart would not have been sufficient The saloonlst testified at the inquest that the Reichlins and Father Walser who frequently visited them while not hilarious were good consumers of old red eye Father Walser was pretty maudlin drunk when the police came Everything was searched and tho priest and brother told their stories of the burglar Blood hounds were sent for they were given the scent and rushed from the girls bed to that of Father Walsers They were taken outside made to smell the ladder and circled the yard time and again but struck no trailReturning to the house again they took tho scent at the girls bed and ran direct to Father Walsers room jumped oil his bed and pulled at the everything down the police found that no one seemed to know anything about burglars in the house but Fattier Walser The brother had slept soundly while Ills sister had been killed Tho vicious dog In yard which was known as a terror to tramps slept soundly The door leading from the girls room to the priests was Unlocked and open Meanwhile a crowd gathered and began to make some demonstrations against Father Walser He was placed under arrest and taken at once to jail loudly declaring his Innocence The following day the brother the priest returned and both brothers proclaimed the Innocence of Father the priest brother was not there and the other brother Casimer was soundly asleep and knew nothing byFatherthey know Father Walser to be Inno cent How do they know It Father Walser was confined in the Jail for several days during which time the premises were searched for every clue and evidence A stone cowered with blood was found In the yard below the girls window It had evidently been thrown from the win dow asu bloody mark was left on the cellar door which it had struck in falling Still the ferocious dog a few feet away who hM a penchant for tearing strangers to pieces saw nobody to bite It is very naturally to be supposed that the stone striking the cellar door would have awakened him and if a strange burglar had como down too ladder he would at least have barked No tracks were found on the ladder nor in the room or attic of the house Meanwhile It was tried to be prov- en that the girl had a lover and that he had possibly done the deed but this theory was soon exploded as It was discovered that the lover an old man who had como to see her only twice and who desired to wait on her had been in Cleveland that day and night The ladder it was claimed be longed to a neighbor who testified that ho had pot used it of late as it was too frail If burglars had carried the ladder from a neighbors into the yard what was the bad dog doing all this while Wouldnt he have barked if ho had not Intimately known the man who put that ladder up At the funeral of the girt the priest brother loudly proclaimed the innocence of Father Walser and was in suIted that the officers of the law should presume to suspicion and lock up a priest The priest and brother exhibited hardly any feeling over the death of their sister manifesting twice as much concern over the safety of Fath er Walser It was developed that Father Wal ser was arrested once before several years ago In Missouri for bad treatment of an orphan left in his charge Father Walser claimed that his arrest at that tinieXwasMueito A JPoA11pre lliU2andltha ho WIYJh fI1t rrl a to tlYmlj emus Ii lttm It was also developed that some years ago Father Reichlin brother of the dead girl went to Europe for six months leaving Father Walser In his place his sister remaining as Father Walsers housekeeper What would be thought of a Meth odist minister who would likewise leave his sister all alone Ina house with another Methodist minister What would the community think of It Under such circumstances what ever a priest does is all right what ever a Methodist minister does is all wrong No young woman could thus live alone as the housekeeper of a protestant minister without both Ing severely condemned Miss Reichlin was thirty years of age and very handsome Father Wal ser was fifty and also a handsome man As the evidence against Father Walser was entirely circumstantial strong though it was he was released from custody after an imprison ment of four days The general public including many Catholics believe him guilty and such was the feeling for awhile that only a leader was required to take him out and lynch him It is safe to say that a layman rest Ing under such suspicion would not have been released until every clue had been run down and not even them The inquest no doubt would have found most any one else guilty The officials who discharged Wal ser before every clue was run down or before public sentiment changed in his favor are to be loudly condemn ed Public sentiment then and still believe that Walser murdered the girl The feeling is the same all over tho State Would they have discharg ed any one else when suspicion point ed directly to him as the murderer No This Is an outrage upon Jus tice Every one feels that either Wai ser or Walser and Caslmer Reichlin together murdered that girl The Catholic churcH would not have a priest hung for a million of dollars anti what would a few thousand bo to that great polltlcioreliglo organiza tlon spent to cover up the crimes of a priest and misdirect Justice How quickly every clamoring mouth may be silenced How quirkily new theor ies be invented to misdirect the scent How easy to play innocence when It Is garbed with holiness Then comes its powerful political Influence its in tluenco upon the press even upon the was Agatha Reichlin The question now arises Who was Agatha Reichlin Was that her real name Was she the sister of priest Rolchlln and his brother Caslmer If so sho was sister to two of the coldestblooded unfeeling heartless brothers that ever lived These brothers seemed to have but one thought or care and that was to save the neck of priest Walser and the church from disgrace It mattered Continued on Page Three GURSE OF Christianity COUNT CASSINI CRITICALLY SURED FOR HIS COWARDLY COLUMN AGAINST CLEV IER CITIZENS tCombination of Cathedral Caprice Cruelty and Carnage Commeasur able with the Criminality f6f the Catholic Church By Morris Sachs And now comes Count Casslnl and says that he has received letters threatening his life Count Casslnl is the Russian Am bassador at Washington And why threateninghisChristians massacred the Jews at Klshlneff The readers of the Blade and the American public In general are acquainted with the horrors com mitted on that day It Is too heartrending to recount the details of that awful day Suffice to say that the good Greek Catholic Russian did not stop at anything the more cruel the deed the more his joy arid pleasure in executing it Religion has been the cause of many an outrage of many a hideous crime but never before have such atrocities been committed by mortal man When a woman a mother in Israel Is stopped on the public highways and recognizing her condition is torn open literally with a plain butchers knife Just ripped open and the un born Infant the foetus taken out from its mothers womb and dashed to the pavementI say when such a thing occurs the climax of Christian civilization has been reached And Count Cassini attempts to justi fy such Christian love and peace on earth with the statement that the charged usurous Interest and henc deserved all they got Usiiious interest more than the law a lows more than the legal rate otiinibrest Wh would pay usurous interest if hjcij obtain the same loan at a legal ft interest And whose m is J niou-s Interest H the merci preeleCatholl Rus sian does not want his fellow Chris tian to pay usurous interest all he has to do is to lend him the money at the legal rate of interest Such ac tion Would solve the problem The usurer would lose his vocation But evidently the Christian Catho lic would not lend his money to his fellow Christian Catholic He was and Is too mean to lend out his money at any price and what Is the result The taxedtodeath peasant Is com pelled to borrow money and not being able to procure the desired loan from his fellow Christian he appeals to the JewThe Jew cannot refuse I have never known a Jew to refuse anything as long as it Is in his power to grant it He advances the desired amount to his Christian neighbor hoping thereby to gain his good will Ana this steeped 1nreligion Cassini Count no account now attempts to repay the kindness of the Jew toward the taxtodeath peasant so that the Count and all his Ilk can live in luxury by justifying this wholesale mur der and debauchery with the plea that the Jews charged usurous Interest The sly Count knew he made a mistake whet he gave out that Inter view to the American press He rec ognized his mistake at once but the deed was done the Interview had been published and to rectify his error he gave out another interview that he had received threatening let ters Threatening lettersbosh No one threatened the Count The fact that he Is a Count proves that he is no ac count His life Is not worth taking and he showed his asslnlne ears when he made the statement that his life Was In danger Coward that ho Is he is attempting to gain the sympathy of the American public by this tommyrot of threaten ing letters No Count you cant fool tho American people all the time No cry for help no Invocation for sym path will Induce the American public to think that you were justified in defending your pious Catholic Chris than zealots in tormenting and killing innocent livesbe they Christian or brothers of your Jesus Christ But history repeats itself Religion has been a curse from time Immemor ial and so It will remain Christianity Instead of teaching and promulgating peace on earth has been tho direct cause of tho most horrible slaughter of Innocent lives of the most exert elating torments of savage butchery and wholesale murder Count Cassini is after all no excep tion to Christian fanatic and as long as religion prevails there will al ways be hatred Jealousy strife blood shed and murder Religion is the curse of modern civ Count brings up the pseudo charge that tho Jew is a money len der and of course Is therefore entlt led to be put to death He even as t j I sumes that the Jew in Russia demands a greater rate of interest than what is known as legal Interest and of course his death should be attended in a most horrible manner pietytruenot only receive the benediction of the Russian priest the blessings of the Russian official the good wishes of the Russian Christian peasant but will certainly bo welcomed by that bythatfor his humanitarian utterances The Count has made the accusation that the Jew is a money lender Has he specified a single case A general charge Is no charge might as well say that the Christian in Russia Is a money borrower What of It should say that here In America a man prefers to be a money lender than a money borrower and Is usually proud of the fact All the good peaceable pious Cath olic Christian in Russia has to do to stop the Jew from being a money der at legal or usurous rates of in terest is not to borrow If they must have money as they already have the land the foundation of all wealth let them borrow of their good ChrIs- tian brethren A report states that If tho Jew is willing to be baptised he can remain in Christian Russia unmolested So after all it seems that it is not a question of money lending a la questionbutcheryOh a jewel POSTAL CARDS We desire to call the attention of our readers to the postal card tem of subscription which we have adopted as a works WHY AM AN ATHEIST I cant write a ilowerf piece that would read well but can tell you why I am an Atheist It is because I was born that way and would so have remained but for that pumping process that besets the young mind on all sides that eternal ding donging of the rot called religion into the ten der mind of childhood until I fell from that happy state which is the natural element of all Atheism So after fifteen years of Hounder Ing around In the sloughs of supersti lion and Ignorance I have landed back on the bottom rock foundation of Atheism I have no need of a God unless It be to keep me out of the malicious hands of his dupes- have examined all the arguments- In support of the God idea have been at it for fortyfive years and find them all on a par with each other not worth the paper they were writ ten on and they only make of men criminals idiots and fools No Atheist will hate his mother father brother sister and children for all gods and saviours that were ever conceived of by all the fanatics that ever pol luted this old earth of ours- am an Atheist because have the full satisfaction of knowing all these theological teachings are absurd false and not good for mankind were they universally accepted and put Into practice by all the world- I am an Atheist for the reason that Atheists do not persecute for opinion sake and do not desire to burn any living thing and contend for absolute liberty for all am an Atheist for the further rea son that dont think any one has the moral right to waste his life In useless worship of the various gods holy vir gins and ghosts etc but ought to put in the time trying to do some good themhappythe world of tramps beggars vaga bonds and parasites that live like societyJustof treasure and blood to foster these degrading and pernicious falsehoods So I feel and know Atheism is our natural style if it were not for stuffing of those idiotic ideas Into the tender mind of childhood and thereb cloaking off all and Ills will In l book tailed the Holy Bible and given It to tho human race for their guill ance These affirmations have been made millions of times for thousnnds of years but those who affirm hnve r never complied with the rue of logIc Since only a small portion of the 11 man race has ever heard of the Dible and its contents contradict the demo onstrated laws of nature since Bible characters are the most brntal murderers immoral and unllrlnclllled In tho annals of literature ant this personal God has never given the slightest hint of Ills existence excellt In the diseased minds of ignorant nnd and fanatical religionists Since I cannot conceive of the God of the verse going Into the book business for the guidance of his creatures when a large majority of them cannot read to preservo my mental Integrity I am forced to be an Atheist Tho Theist and tho Pantheist are to my mind in the same dilemma The Pantheist says God is In every thing is the soul of the world If this Is so then God is In all the terrors ot nature He is in the good nnd In the bad in all tho imperfect and wickedness on the earth Ho suf fers with us In bodily and mental pain He denies and insults Himself in the The church spire of the Theist we are told points us to God Wo strain ar we see our eyes and imagination only the heavens and the sun moon and stars but no God is there We search the earth and even explore the mental realms but no God can be found Then we remember that tno Uioio which the Theist claims wa written by God says God Is past finding out No man bath seen at any time No man could look upon God and live If these things are true It Is a waste of time and an intrusion on an exalt slve deity to try and find him Yet have been told by many Christian that they have found God Buch ner propounds this pertinent question to believers In a personal God Why did not the everlasting creative er write his name In starry letters In the heavens and tics put an end all these doubts that torment the hu man mind to all these endless troversies about His existence which have caused so much pain and grlei to poor humanity groping forever the darkness Why should ho himself from us and lay snare foi our reason which inveigle us Into endless doublings How could God if He exists quiet ly witness all the sad results of this uncertainty about His own existence seeing that he could so easily put an end to them With Buchner we exclaim How could Ho This is a natural ques tion and should bo answered by those who affirm the existence of a person al God An absolute demonstration of the existence of a personal God would bring every Atheist on the face of the earth Into the Christian fold be fore the rising of another sun This one demonstration would do away with the need of missionaries for it would swing Into the Christian fold tho Chinese Japanese and Budd hists of all types who are all Atheists beside the Intellectual titans of all the i Christian nations who are pronounced Atheists and lead the march of mind The Theist simply affirms the ex istence of a personal God Tho Atheist demonstrates that thhe universe is not ruled by a capricious personal God but by infrangible laws IYThe Theist affirms that God sits upon His throne In heaven and rules the world t The scientist demonstrates that the law of measure and number rules in the changeful hosts of the stars as It does in the brain of man The Theist affirms that the throne of his personal God Is a mercy seat In face I rTTTTTTTTTTTTTYTTTTTTYTT of the fact that there Is not one n ing creature in the universe that Is not n sufferer yet tho Theist serts that God doth all things well When the Atheist asks tho reason wiry this world Is filled with suffering sorrow tragedy and catastrophe coin ed from the brain and heart of human ity the Theist quotes his Bible lie that preaches any other Gospel let him be accursed Those mine ene mles which would not that I should reign over them bring hither and slay them before me The earth has been deluged with tears and blood devastated by fire blood and tho sword and wrinklt with graves yet the Theists personal God of love has ever been deaf dumb and blind to the terrors and tragedies of tho centuries For this reason if for no other I nm an AUle 1st The Theist affirms that Atheism Is a bloody and ferocious belief In fnce of the facts that Theism has the bloodiest rcccird In the annals of time that the Atheistical nations novel waged war on other nations and that Christian nations are now armed to the teeth and the newly made grnves in China the Phlllptnes and South Africa attest the brutality and ferocity of Thelstlcal nations For this reason I am an Atheist The Theist says It is dangerous for Atheism to corrupt the minds of chl dren In face of the fact that pernl claus Christian teaching has turned this world Into a jarring battle field and n slaughter house and our prisons and scaffolds swarm with believers in a personal God For this reason I am nn Atheist The Theist asserts that to doubt or deny the existence otn personal God Is shocking to his feelings Ignoring the fact that tho assertions of the Theist about his personal God with His vicarious atonement heaven hell and His decree that there is not one good human being on the earth and that all deserve eternal punishment and would receive It but for tile icacy of the blood of a slain God are socking In the extreme to Atheist Tho Theist says to the Atheist Ah when you come to die you wish you were a Christian Can it be that accepting the thing against which my reason revolts and denying to others the mental libert clalni for myself will give mo pent In my dying hour If to do this Is to be a Christian may I not die the death of the righteous or my last end years ago and escaped by the connivance of the Priest OGrady was a native Ireland One of his parishioner left her only child Mary Oil In the care of OGrady In he seduced the child making believe that It was a duty she him When she grew older and that such relations were look upon asi Immoral she protested was forced to cohabit with him escape him she came to New York place OGrady followed her she went to Clnclnnatl Stisl tilt pursued her Meeting her on street near her home he demand that she resume relations with Upon her refusal he shot her them poured more lead Into her body and stamped her In face was arrested and sent to jail few days he took sick When his for trial came he was carried In court ona stretcher a disgust looking wretch slobbering at the and looking like an idiot court ordered him taken to the hospital Here he continued to soap and act the Idiot In the of time he was declared In and sent to the asylum He re there two years never at any showing any symptom of Insanl Ho was made to understand that charge of Insanity menat his ulti release He got better at once took any treatment while there the superintendent of the asy demanded that something be done him as he was sane and always been sane a big political private discus It was concluded to let him out make It appear through the pa that he had effected his escape offer big rewards for him superintendent of the asylum him to get out and ho ran the streets of Cincinnati for before the papers took the up This was to give him time his escape Any number of saw him and several gave a kick and prdered him to keep their beat the papers came out in big and big rewards were of and It was reported that he had seen in different places In Ohio Kentucky and that detectives been sent to apprehendl him In fact the detectives did not go and the Cincinnati police were by their chief to let OGrady and not to apprehend him became of him Is not but without a doubt the h got a hold of him concealed for a time and sent him hack to poor Pat what would they done with you In such a case Mary Gllmartln was thin of a poor Irish widowruined then murdered on the open at the very noon hour and murderer went free do you think of It What do think of It people of Loraln you been Just as blind In do Justice havent you been Just as In conscience and duty as corrupt courts of Cincinnati you played Into the hands of desire ttiM lI T1 to bo known as people who would do feat justice and conceal crime Do You Want Murderers Drunkards and Seducers for Your Priests Do you expect a religion which cov Ors up thin crimes of those selected- give to advice and example to the respect of the world at large When you do this do you wonder that the world at large looks upon the Catholic organization with trust and fear Do you wonder that Catholics themselves as In Franc Spain Mexico and Brazil are drawing the lines on the corrupt priesthood Take this lesson to heart If yoi would be respected yourself and have your religion respected then see to it that your priests are sober tempoi ate moral men see to It that those who proclaim virtue most shall prac tlce It most Do you put up your good money for drunken orgies of men who command you yourselves to sobriety When you see a priest with a fine looking young housekeep er like Mary Gllmartln who Is passed as the priests sister see to It tltat she In fact his sister By doing so you may prevent a murder and protect your religion from disgrace People of Loraln You stand convicted by the general public of being weak lax and ndlffer ent to conscience law and duty It Is up to you to run down the murder er of Agatha Relchlln Correct tin mistake you were so weak as to make Bring Walser back and hold him untilI very suspicion against him Is dls polled Why do you niche yourselves ridiculous by running around hunting up unlikely clues and suspects when tho real culprit Is apparent to overj ono Has It come to pass in this country that the Catholic priesthood not amenable to the law That they can seduce make mistresses of and kill girls and go unpunished- print this in this remote paper foi the reason that no home paper foi political and other reasons has theI courage and manhood and patriotism to print just what the great majority 3i the public hero believe to be the us have justlco done in thisI aseConflicting Medical Testimony The corour a the Inquest hat no other marksof violence were found upon the body except those made by the stone Some days after her burial it was noised about that two other physicians who had exam- Ined tho body declared that they saw linger marks on her throat This led to the exhumation of the body and es tabllshlng the fact that she had been poked It also strengthens the suspicion that the officials connected with the case are lending their assis tance to covering up things This tes lmony Is extremely Important What Would a bjer Do Would a robber enter a house seek he room of a woman and proceed to hoke her to Insensibility then hunt- a stone in the dark to kill her with this the way robbers go at their work Would he look for valuables In thin rooom ofa housekeeper How loos It come that he could accomplish ill this and not be heard b Caslmer 3clehllh and priest Walser In adjpln ng rooms What motive could have In killing the girl unless she- had discovered him And when a wo nan discovers a burglar does she lot Instantly scream The evidence shows that the girl was approached In her sleep choker to insensibility and then her skull md face were caved In with the stone which was used to prop the door open How did the robber know the stone was there Would a robber enter a house depending upon finding a stone to defend himself with or would he Instead carry a sand bag or slung sot Having these would he use a tone This part of the story Is ridiculously llmsy and to the public at large It looks very queer that the officers of the law should give It the least cred nee Another Flimsy Story A piece of a necklace has been oundi along the railroad some miles from Lorain It Is thought that It Is part of a necklace belonging to Igatha Relchlln and that thin robber throw It from the car window If this remnant of a necklace can be Identified as having belonged to Aga ha Relchlln It Is claimed that this wll prove beyond a doubt that her murderer was a robber Not a bit of it Nothing could be easier than to tale several pieces of property belong- Ing to Agatha Relchlln and scatter them out along the railroad where hey may be found Does It not pear that In the hurry to let priest Valser escape that new theories havo had to be Invented to direct public at entlon from the priest Would a ber take a piece of worthless neck lace Would he kill a woman to get Itl A robber never enters a house without knowing Its occupants Would he look for a cheap necklace of a servant or for the watches and cket books of thin men Such gossament inventions exhibit the desperation of those who to all ppearance are endeavoring to cover tho tracks of thin real murderer who was evidently not a robber for- ho took nothing and besides exhibited none of the caution of a burglar Sifting the Evidence After all tho evidence is sifted down suspicion still points strongly to priest Walser or to Caslmer Reich IIn or to both conjointly Nothing can be plainer that this fact that the mur lerer was familiar to that dog and also with the presence of that stone In the house It Is preposterous to suppose that a burglar know of that stone or that he would enter a house so unprepared us to need Motive for the Crime A reasonable motive Is the first step to be discovered In all cases of criminal suspicion like this If priest Wnlser killed the girl what then could havo been his motive Would a priest kill anybody Has he passions like other men Does he get drunk Has he love affairs Does jealousy torment him These are questions easily answer t X t Tho plainest of all motives IsI apparent What was tho motleof OJGrady for killing Mary Gllmartli In this case It was a lovo affair list jealousy and vicIousness and In the Relchlln affair a part or all of theso causes may be suspected Or agaIn the girl may have threatened exposure of Walser for Improper advanci the robber theory has been oxplolded thero remains nothing to do but to fall back upon the original suspicion anti point to a reasonabfo public mind Is pretty well satls fled as to who killed the girl and try as the detectives may be chasing Ima glnary robbers they do not and not alter public opinion hut rather render themselves ridiculous bytracl ing where there Is no scent Everything rlxed Priest Walser sends word that he Is willing to return to Loraln at an time to testify In regard to the case- n brlest Walser had been a man jealous of his reputation he woud not have left Loraln as long as suspicion rested so strongly against him Innocence never fears to face suspicion Why did Walser hustle away as soon as he was released It Is safe to say that he will not return to Loraln before all Is fixed before some half wa plausible clue Is Invented diverting suspicion upon some one else And he will not be asked to return until some ono else is Indicted and nlnetynln chances In a hundred an innocent person Thin detectives are at the end of their string Look out for manufactured have existed ant possessed the qualities ascribed to him for It Is claimed that many many wonderful things he did He created the earth and man to Inhabit It In ah lays which every Informed person uncon radlcted for centuries to mislead the leoplo of the world he has been play Ing the gay deceiver if not the part of a whlcn contention we may the only historical evidence we have of a God Is absolutely unreliable and not to be taken into consideration Therefore this Is my first reason or why I am an Atheist Another strengthenlngreasonfor faith that is in me is that have no alked with n and example So long as wo depend on prohibition by coercion to strain men from evil wo caro less and depend less upon our own exam plo to lead tho feeble minded aright Men will go Into a saloon to drink reo gardless of the example he sets to the young for he says we have a law against minors going Into such lliaces In the absence of coercion of man made laws mutual cooperation or voluntaryism would as surely result as that day follows night Man Is social being and as Paine said Ule mutual dependence and reciprocal In terst man has In man would create a great chain of connection to hold us true socialism must be unrestrained There can be no such thing as a social state In tho true meaning of the term Socialism must be voluntary State Socialism Is what Spencer calls the coming slavery Our government now Is stato Socialistic Take our army and navy our elemosyo nary Institutions our llarls our schools our fire and water departments our streets roads bridges etc and observo how carelessly and pensively they are managed The abolition of the State would not abolish society As Paine sas In his Common Sense Same writers have so confounded society with government as to leave little or no distinction between them whereas they are not only different but have different origins Society Is produced by our wants and government by our wickedness The one encourages In tercourse the other creates dlstlnc tlons Government like dress Is the badge of lost Innocence The love of approbation or distinction prompts most of our acts Ien do not work for bread and clothing alone they work for distinction for the approbation of their fellows Few men can distinguish themsoves as poets philosophers orators or musicians but since riches distinguishes a man more than anything else and It does not take so great a mind to get rich more men seek riches Dut true greatness does not consist of riches except with Ignorant slaves The Southern slave whose master owned a hundred negroes felt proud of his masters greatness and tantalized other negroes whose masters own ed but ten just as poor white slaves are proud of a millionaire in their neighborhood It Is a hopeful sign however to see Hugo mourned by more people than was Napoleon and Altgcld more than Pullman and Greely more than Vanderbilt As lhe world Is enlightened true greatness IJsappreciated The greatest good t ever done In tho world was done not 11rof1r distinction Did Franklin Morse Ed ison or Tesla experiment and bring forth their great discoveries for money Their love of money was no inducement compared with their love Vofscience So with all discoveries In sciences and Inventors of machinery Neither does government assist In discoveries to any great extents It questionable whether the abolition of patent laws would check Inventions or discoveries in the sciences superIlorsthe superior classes Even a pet mono key will get jealous if its master bestows his affections on his children Many lower animals may bo taught clover tricks In Imitation of man l1r kind treatment through their love of approbation The worst boys In our village will dress as conventionally as their purse will bear to appear well to their superiors And the worRt boys I konw will If approached lelnd ly do mo a favor when requested aud refuse pay for It All men have a good side to them which alone would bo appealed to In a free society co operative voluntaryism It Is hopefi i to see the many efforts at cooper tlon Independent of government The Labor Exchange a society absolut ly independent of nil government anti legal tender mosey for Instance The i runny voluntary societies benevolei and pecuniary independent of fore is a good sign In a mutual society where govern ment nail Its hoards of nonproducin officers and soldiers are turned Into producers and where nearly half thl labor now expended would be useless two hours of labor from each wool produce moro useful wealth each day than Is now produced Then person could choose their vocation and their labor would be a recreation and man would work many hours through love of the vocation Then it would be con ventional to work and no one could bravo the odium of society by reCus1 ing to be productive of good Now the supposed best people do not worh and those who do are overworked till It becomes irksome and to be shunned as disgraceful In a free society who would volun teer to make whiskey and weapons of warfare They are now made and sold for money I have talked with many saloon keepers and they all tell mo that they lead a dogs life and If there were not more money in It than in anything else they would not follow It In free society who would volun teer to build a million dollar residence for one man to live in Would not he and his retinue of servants bo turned Into productive vocations Illustrate the waste and inefll 1To of our present competitive and wasteful ways of work in Boston there are on one street twenty piano stores and each store sells a different piano having an excellence that no other has One of tho dealers pays GO000 a year for clerk hire and ad vertising Now in a mutual society one raanufnctury would make one piano and ono store would distribute l l if pianos having in each all tho eanei lences of all others now on tho mur ketI got out of the post office one day twentyfive packages of mall and eighteen wero pure advertisements and the other sewn were ouethlrd advertisements Over ono half the printing now done would be useless In a cooperative society So with many other things the reader can thlnl of In a mutual society tao preacher nail the lecturer would have all tho time they have now to prepare their speeches after two hours recreation In some productive vocation and they would speak for the love of truth and dare to tell tho truth as they cannot do today and hold their jobs Tbey could use plain Intelligible language nail call a spade a spade and not use language to conceal thought as now Men could then be honest I llCard travelling man say he could not be absolutely frank and honest and do business Our present society breeds crime as does government Oovern ment sets the example of several of the most heinous crimes It murllcrs by wholesale In war and prlvatelj by electrocution and strangulation It robs me to pay for wars chaplains and officers against my will It forges chlldrens names to bonds to be 1mld in their old days It suppresses the truth about affairs to suppress the freedom of speech and tho press Some of the most Important truths are debarred from publication There can bo but one standard of right What Is wrong for me to do Is wrong for many to do It Is just as wrong for me to murder a mar as It Is for the State to do it with Its sheriff or with its militia or for the nation to murder In war and no more wrong It is just as wrong for the State to rob me by taxing me as for me to rob an individual or a banlt Numbers or might do not make an act society Is now constituted wrong In some cases is right Industry and economy aro abstractly right Rut he who produces least and con sumes most Is the greatest benefactor he pay money for what he consumes Ho gives poor men to whom labor Is a boon work for wages who would not get labor If all men were economical and Industrious It is a deplorable fact that such dlsas firs as the Chicago fire and the Oal Weston flood benefited more peOple han it Injured giving themworl it wages It is lamentable that the destruction of property the very thing all men want benefits the masses As society is restrained by overnment If every one was econom nal to the point of parsimony manu acturlng would decline and society would retrograde to barbarism But In a free society of mutualism the person who produced most ll1d consumed least would be tho greatest benefactor to society for what he produced and saved would be for all Then It would be to the Interest of very ono to produce and conserve wealth There would be no Incendlar nor competition Competition lergefljfli emulation as to wbo could yeand best ore No eany olliC1 ambltl n than el In slelll ptoductlv ness for such would be most honor ed + + it Many politicians of our times are In the habit of laying It down as a self evident proposition that no people ought to be free till they are fit to IIse their freedom The maxim Is orthy of the fool old woman in the song 0 mother may I go out to swim 0 yes my darling daughter Just hang your clothes on a hlcltory limb nut dont go near the water If wo are to wait for liberty till the become wise and good In slaveryI they may Indeed wait forever Results are not always commensurate with appliances especially of ap lances of force Wo take a sheet of copper or tin that Is cockled as sar and expect with one fell stroke with a hammer on an anvil to smootl It out but we see numerous other rlnkles In unexpected places arise Tho Prohibitionists think that with Gne great general law against tbe anufacture and sale of intoxicant we would have a heaven on Dut with all the laws ever made Uley have only produced other evils unfor Roen in unexpected places Perjury stealth litigation and liquor party has heen the result If the energy and money expended in getting prohll tory laws had been expended in cating and persuading people against the use of intoxicants and government had kept its hands off from It thero would be less poverty froi IIfJuor than there is now Spencer lays down a great truth which Is verified by any observatio In my mind He says In substanc that no evil was ever put down b force that sonic other evil or evils- did not arise In unforeseen places take Its place I do not much good as harm over resulte from coercive force As Franklin said There never was a good war nor had peace All government is war In Its last analysis Love and truth are the only Invln- clhlo and eternal principles and erR In the social world The Idea that free society can be Inougurated
