uelivered a lecture at the Alhambra Theatre Sat Francisco taking for his subject What we ought to read and the con verese What we ought iOT to read It seems amazing in this land or printing presses and public education that one man or set of men should set themselves up as the literary sors of the people The Archbishop puts his subject this way What WE ought to read and what WE ought not to read One would think that this prelate had a literary censor dlc tatlng to him just as he dictates to the laity as to what reading matter Is proper or Improper to read Since he knows so much of realistic and scientific literature it Is natural to conclude that he has read all the thers he so severely condemns there by claiming privileges that be denIes to other men and women The people In general pay no attention whatever to such a lecture but go right on reading what they please without asking of even an Archbishop by your leave will read this or lectures ar necessary to keep the faithful In subjection to their erary censors There are two classes of the Catholic laity that will strictly follow the Archbishops directions about what they shall NOT read The first class are those who CANNOT read and the second class arc those who DO NOT read and these two classes constitute the rank and file of the adherents to that faith The few educated Catholics read the dead lau cuages of dead generations and theIr clerIcal censors who sweep the range of human thought know it would be fatal to the system that has always been maintained through Ignorance fear and proscription to turn on the
