uelivered a lecture at the Alhambra Theatre Sat Francisco taking for his subject What we ought to read and the con verese What we ought iOT to read It seems amazing in this land or printing presses and public education that one man or set of men should set themselves up as the literary sors of the people The Archbishop puts his subject this way What WE ought to read and what WE ought not to read One would think that this prelate had a literary censor dlc tatlng to him just as he dictates to the laity as to what reading matter Is proper or Improper to read Since he knows so much of realistic and scientific literature it Is natural to conclude that he has read all the thers he so severely condemns there by claiming privileges that be denIes to other men and women The people In general pay no attention whatever to such a lecture but go right on reading what they please without asking of even an Archbishop by your leave will read this or lectures ar necessary to keep the faithful In subjection to their erary censors There are two classes of the Catholic laity that will strictly follow the Archbishops directions about what they shall NOT read The first class are those who CANNOT read and the second class arc those who DO NOT read and these two classes constitute the rank and file of the adherents to that faith The few educated Catholics read the dead lau cuages of dead generations and theIr clerIcal censors who sweep the range of human thought know it would be fatal to the system that has always been maintained through Ignorance fear and proscription to turn on the light either through scientific or realistic literature The conclusion to be drawn from this Archbishops lecture- Is that all nonCatholic literature should be on the prohibited list for Catholic hooks alone will Improve the intellectual and moral well bejjat tnan woman not counte f To prevent any freedom of thought beyond that allowed by the Catholic church there Is a catalogue of books forbidden to be read by Roman Catholics entitled The Index Expur atorlus It was first compiled by the Inquisitors then approved by the Council of Trent then confirmed by bull of Clement VIII in 1595 ThIs Index with Its great Latin title will bring the average devotee to his knees as an edict in Latin to the Irish German Austrian French o English Catholic Is as affective as hull from the Pope Here are a few of the books In the Index that must NOT be read by Catholics They are added to from time to time so no wonder the church of Rome has l1ust on Youth and morality Tho books of Luther Calvin and ulngllus the translation of the Old Testament by JunIus translation New Testament by Beza The dex says It Is a very dangerous thIng to permit the Bible In the gar tongue even a Catholic translation to be read without license In writing from the bishop or with the advice of tho readers confessor Rule of the Index says Let no books of controversy in the vulgar tongue he suffered abroad Rule says All books wheresoever written though Catholic and by Catholic au thors are prohibited until they be rected If they contain anything whici Is not fit for all mens reading The newly published list of prohibited boobs In the Papal Index contains 287 royal quarto pages So we may easily Imagine the difficulty that presents Itself to the Roman Catholics who CAN read In the selection their reading matter Amongst other prohibited books in the Index are- the Psalms of David Ovids Art Iove Dantes Divine Comedy Balzac Darwin Descartes Hume Mante gazza Renan Savonarola Spinoza vedenburg Voltaire George Sand Victor Hugo Dumas Dollinger Strauss Kant Frederick the Great lieino Paine and Boccaccio These are but a few authors from n list that fills 278 pages whose works Catholics are forbidden to read Writers of each generation are- placed on the list Coming up today- Zola Is placed on the black list MarIe Correlll Is not on It site should he The following will show how Lew allaces Ben Hur is passing mus- tel with Leo XIII BEN HUR IS APROVCD Rome April 0 Cardinal Ramopl la has written officially to Profesor Salvadorl of the Popes honorary aplalns who recently published italian version of General Lew Wal- lacos novel Ben Hur saying that- his holiness has evinced special pleas- me upon receiving the presentation copy of the work Tho Popes plOval is of especial Interest In view of the fact that lieu liar has hither to been excluded from many Roman Catholic libraries Vo searched In vain In tho Index to find the prohlbtlon against Mother h Goose and Pecks Hall Boy The clerical censors in thtlr anxiety to prohibit Catholics from rending Dar win Huxley Tyndall and Spencer overlooked these two dangerous works The works of scientists can be as easily understood by the mass of the Catholic laity as a Latin ritual chanted by an Irish priest It is a travesty for even an Archbishop to boast of Catholic education when every great In the realm of thought Is under the ban When the Archbishop In his lecture condemned Spencer Ilux ley Darwin and Tyndall and nounced them dangerous hecause they are so subtle did ho speak from the standpoint of a slanderer or a school boy Which Either dllem ma In the case of an Archbishop of an Inerrant church Is unpardonable The basic policy of the Catholic Church is founded on the Gregorian edict Ignorance is the mother of devotion The human mind must not be enlightened by Independent thought robust reasoning and fear less Investigation hut It must be en slaved and tortured on the rock of r The feelings must uo aroused and the imagination overawed by the peals of the deep toned organ and the grandeur of Cathedrals The prelate severely condemned the works of Zola the Realist Now the truth is writers of all schools but reflect the mental and moral conditions of the age in which they live Zolas books only expose the immorality that Is eating out tne heart of Christian civilization If the church Is what it claims to be the censor of morals surely it has failed signally In Its work as realists like Zola only throw a search light on the moral drainage and social sewerage that aro undermining the Christian SS tern Books of any class are not cur rupt They can only represent the corruption In society Some one ought to expose these terrible conditions if the human race Is ever to be elevated and as the clergy who claIm to be moral censors conceal the facts the realist tells the truth The Archbishop In speaking of the press said No man has higher gard for the press than have but the press is not doing half the It ought to do do not say the press Is venal It Is not Nevertheless the press is a thing that has to be run on business principles Did the Archbishop think of the remarkable parallel between the presS and the priesthood that both are run on strictly busIness print CnhItrnu 1lf nmm hIs lecture Tie Ideal devotee Is the person whose time is spent in getting hold of the circulating medium a large percentage of which Is cast Into the church treasury counting beads making genuflexions and worshipIng saints In other words the church Is run on strictly business prlnc plea It seems a waste of time and vitality to talk about what Catholics mar or may not read as the strug glo for existence keeping up the church that Is run on strictly bus ness principles and religious duties leaves no time for the Catholic mind to be contaminated by realistic or scIentific literature which the Arch bishop says Is both subtle and than gerousrRealistic literature merely turns the Xrays on actual conditions It could not be produced unless the realism in human society furnished the subjects and the data to the realist who paints actual conditions- In letters of fire and blood The real 1st Is a product of and gets In his artistic work In Catholic countries The Archbishop said In his lecture that It Is only the Catholic Church that gives us mho true Idea of man The true idea of man under the teachIng of the church Is sufficiently npressed upon the pages of hlstor andnleds no comment here and the realists of France and Italy are ly putting on the shades and hIgh- lights The Catholic idea of man was completely rounded oit- in the character of Pope Innocent HI founder of the quisition who gave the sanction of Papal infallibility to the dogma that The end justifies the means The scIence of the Catholic Church it clearly elucidated In a sermon delivered lu Archbishop Montgomerys cese on April 9th by Father Peter E Yorlw who said God desires to bo near to man It may seem strange that the being of whom the world is but as a drop of water should so condescend yet so It Is Since the day He took dust and with a little spittle mixed It up lu His hand and formed Adam has loved man There is nothing subtle or gerous in this scientific teaching the Catholic Church It really seems unkind to criticise intellection near the border line of Idiocy The press pronounced Archbishop ontgomerys lecture a masterly Ihess The keynote of it was We were not created for this world only but chiefly and mainly for the world to come The prelate prescribed coarse of reading that would land us In this world to come All that said must be absolutely TRUE as this lecture was given under the auspices of the Catholic Truth Society It may revolutionize the reading the American people and all scion tlflc and realistic literature may come dead stock In the book market Writers along these lines will avail- the Influence of the Archbishops turc with anxiety JOSEPHINE K HENRY ROME DECLARES AGAINST SCIENTIFIC BpOKS AND would not surprise us but to witness the spectacle of an American ArchbIshop rising In a theater In Cal irnla and to listen to the denunciation of the literature of Darwin Hux Iey Spencer and Tyndall they MUST DO but at this day and age to be told what MUST NOT BE DONE Is overreaching the bounds and Is going to mature the performance of just the- verr thing restricted Archbishop ontgomery is reported as declaring that It is only the Catholic Church that gives us the true Idea of man- that we are created not for this world only but chiefly and mainly for the world to come that if we wish must stop thinking and rely on the revelations or Christ But this Catholic Arch bishop goes Bishop Francis one ter and says Christians must not begin to think For Christians to be gin to think Is fatalto Christianity And sure to wreck reliance on the revelations of Christ and the Infal bllity of Popes and priests But the Catholic church does not stop with recommendations to the people to leave unread certain books but it says to the members Thou shalt not and upon the list of expurgated literature are the names of ie immortals of the ages past and present The spasms about the realism of Zola seem to have been duced because he strikes so nearly tthe heart of the terrible condition under the Catholic Christian gime and Instead of suppressing facts about these conditions the church Jew would say with David Lift your toads ye everlasting doors and the King of Glory shall conic In This was the climax of a lecture h Dr Hlrsch delivered last night bofor the Epworth league of St Jamc Methodist church Kills avenue and Fort 8Ixth street The big amllenc gave the speaker a storm of applaus when he sat down the chairman or the meeting thanked him for his lee uro the people thanked him for it b a rising vote and as he had eulogize the Lords prayer the meeting was closed with It Dr Hirsch repeating It In unison with his Christian friend The Jews said Dr Hirsch do not believe at all In original sin anll Inherited depravity They believe cry man Is a responsible free ngen and is not involved in the guilt of Ills fathers or his children Of course therefore they do not believe the story of the fall of man in the book of Genesis in its literal sense They a j cept the teachings of the higher crll Iclsm and consider the story of e garden of Eden an allegory As the reject the doctrine of original sit they reject of course the doctrine of redemption from slit They believ f In a Messiah lint the Messiah of thl Old Testament is a temporal prince who shall reign over the Jews aftc they shall have been reunited an become a nation again In Palestine At least the orthodox Jews believ this but the liberal Jews do not b lieve In the Messianic prophesies at all For Instance the prophesy In 1st lah supposed to teach the miraculous birth of Jesus was undoubtedly spol en of Ilezekiah and properly translated there Is nothing mlraculou about it The Jews hold that Jesus prcache hundreds of years before Jesu was born Moreover when it cones to practicing the loving precepts of Jesus the Jews claim that the Christian have made an utter failure of It The truth Is Jesus was crucified by a Roman governor and Roman soldier and though the crucifixion was inst hired by Jews It was by a few jealous vspriests and not by the mass of the Jewish people who admired and loved him as is evident from his triumphn entry into Jerusalem the day before So far as the modern Jews are cerned they regard Jesus as one the noblest spiritual teachers that ever appeared In the world and that the Jews have furnished the only shining example of obedience The so called disciples of Jesus have perse tinted the Jews with savage ferocity for ages and the Jews have borne those persecutions with Iamblike tleness and silence Dr Hirsch then presented the lief of the Jews in the resurrection und the Immortality of the soul He J said it could not be denied that man hud a soul and the barn existence of a soul proved its Immortality after death There are several remarkable cir sumstances observed In the above ad dressFirstThe speaker is a noted Jew Infidel who but last week preached a life will possibly prove a disenchantment Do not pin your faith to a vague hope of meeting hereafter which may disappoint you FOI rthHe denies the divinity of Jesus and also some of the prophecy believed by Christians to have refer red to Jesus but eulogizes the Lords prayer as the most sublime utter ance ever made and states that if Jesus would come to earth every Jew- Ish synagogue would be the pea pie thanked him by a rising vote SeventhWhat could be more rid culous than Methodist Christians ap plaudlng a man for lambasting the pet doctrines and scoring themselve as persecutors and hypocrites Peo pie generally and Christians in pai ticular do not appreciate being heM up thus in the limelight so why dId they applaud cant understand it except on the principle that a bully always respect thin man who finally knocks him dozy and gives him a good mauling Hirsch Is evidently falling into the Jesus habit of talking two ways Thl lecture is remarkable Inasmuch as It was delivered to Methodists and asmiich as Hirsch tsuck his dagge deep Into their vitals turned It around a few times and then threw some senseless sop to them about the Lords prayer and hailing the King of Glory if he should happen to pas this way and the befuddled Wesley ans thanked and applauded him his vicious thrusts as well as for the soothing salve he applied to their as a public man begins to talk two ways that moment he be guts an excavation for his own Into aunt People soon lose Interest in a ulna when they cant put their tinge on him and find him Since Rabb Wise Hirsch has been the most prom intnt Jewish exponent In the country But his reputation will soon decline If hetalks Atheism one day and Christian Immortality the nextIf he proclaim Christ the King of Glory and cites the Lords prayer and thus rec ognies a religion which has not oil persecuted but damned and sent to hell every Jew on earth since it gan its reign Why should Jews who came to titcountry to escape the The Jews are no lunge despised mongrels Their rIches have made them respected Their Ire from utter annihilation as ana tic n through starvation persecution extermination and disintegration maintaining by breeding all the character without any of the advantage of a natoin stamps them as tho great st people on the earth today In wealth they are preeminent In pc titles art music and In all the pro admits that I am a mar among men deserving immortality and not damned to eternal hell slm pay because am born a Jew never say would so far forget the sufferings the tortures and martyrdom ol my becoming respect d and on account of these riches he Christian heart is softening Money always talks Heaven is a rich citythe streets there are of gc1d the buildings are of onyx sap hire and jasper When the Jew had no money he went to hell Now the gates of heav en are swinging open to him not widely and at all times but just 3nough to admit an occasional appll cant There are some fools among Jews is among other people and no doubt here will he some of them attempt to worm Into heaven just as some of them try to worm Into fashionable Christian society today A poor Jew who tries to break to either Chlstlan society or heaven ought to be sent to hell for having better sense There is a marked tendency upon he part of some Christians however oward admitting some Jews Into icaven those old fellows who con rlbute to Christian charitable insti utlons These are always good eas and the possibility of their ialvatlon is admitted We behold the drift In the lecture liven by Hirsch to the Methodists The Christians throw a bait to the Jews and some of them are fools enough to snap at It No sensible Jew will feel flattered ccaiise Qhristlans worship a Jews something laughable of course that Christians should select a Jew for their God and then precede to damn forever all his relations anti ribe dont blame the Jews If they ulgc a little fun and hold in tempt such a ridiculous conceited and consistent assumption But every thoughtful observing Jew wlll rcaally perceive that compromise weaken Judaism and strengthen hrlstlanity and he should therefore avoid It Chrlslanity at no time has 001 demonstrated that it Is capable of overcoming prejudice of race and cread and belief It Is by nature un unpromising cruel and overhearing x and recedes from these positions anlll find mix either In synagogue or In church Or In a Jew heaven or in a CllIlstilln heaven of selfish class and race d s Unctions + + 4 There Is no likelihood whatever of Jesus returning to earthat least not for some time Hell stay where he Is for a while There Is really no occasion for Rabbi Hirsch to anticipate his coming The everlasting doors will let their heads hang as usual for a long time yet It would be something worth seeing however should it ever happen that the doors would take a no tlon to lift up their heads The change of position no doubt would give their heads a rest hut let us suppose this King of Glory shouu come to earth how does Rabbi Hirsch know that eve synagogue In the world would come him want to show my readers just what fool talk some prominent men Indulge In In the first place it would not tJe natural for the Jews to make a hlg ado over a man in whose name are Hglon had been established which has been the greatest persecutor of the Jewish race They would naturally shun him they would hold back until his person allty was well authenlcated next tin wculd want him to explain himse and justify the actions of his dish pies toward his own people Tin would be mighty exclusive In some particulars They would demand that he state the exact cause of his death If he blamed the Jews with It then their temple doors would be sure to stay closed If he blamed the Chris tlans and would show where ther had been wrong all down the cents leg then the Christians would de nounce him as an Imposter and 11Ie as not take him out and drown him The first thing that would happen on his coming would be a big dls pate between Christians and Jew and then among Christians themselves as to which Is the true church In my opinion If Jesus would come to earth there would be the ddest racket ever raised on earth over him and he would be arrested either as a nuisance or as a lunatic within two months of his arrival At first people would have great cu rlcslty to see him but as soon as the excitement would begin to cpnflii with beezeness they would drop him like a hot potato Theres no God as big as a sllver dcllar InvJatiorfromernmnts illc LQeS41I earth bat ironer wt s e would stay to that place would the money flow Ah wouldnt there be a scramble And theres no telling what might happen right In the Vatican The sup Ksltion is that no change will have taken place in the opinions and personal characteristics of Jesus Being Sod he has remained the same and vould renew the doctrines he had ireviously taught How natural then it would lie for hIm to say See here Leo old the mil tary methods and instruments em ployed In establishing Christian peace throughout the world King Edward would make a naval display trot out Lord Kitchener and Iris veterans who had borne the Lord High Bishops of the church will escort him through the temples which they have erected his honor and to their profit This will be for thin purpose of showing him that material grandeur should Rev R H Pooley af Rockford III have denied a be lief In the resurrrectlon of Christ from the dead In consequence there Is a howl from Damn to Beersheba All the E roosters are crowing or cackling at of fear cannot begin to adequately estimate the physical and mental distress endured by the timid for this devilish anarUloh for after all like the boy who frightened at the ghost ly looking guidepost but marched boldly up to it found It was not a monster with arms outstretched to seize him as he had thought The Christian dogma of hell Is one jf the most diabolical doctrine that s ever made millions of dupes mis J ble throughout their earthly exist- e but I wish to speak of one par Bcular excrescence of this diseased feeding dogma of hell and that Is the fear of women in arousing the anger of their husbands and well may they fear for their vengance Is more dead ly and more acute than a future state of torment can possibly be Wives who are Intimidated by their husbands suffer ten thousand deaths but- anddtIIgalnst divorce except for scriptural reasons Women subjects endure the tortures of the damned for a lifetime bear children labor unceasingly and uncomplainingly Why Fear of death at the hands of their masters And why should they fear death Surely to suffer the physical death every day could not compare with the anguish and torture endured by many women The pain of a murder committed in the most brutal way can only be prolonged for a short time but to contemplate the inter minable years of misery of living deaths of women Is enough to sub merge the world with tears of sorrow and despair There is another reason for the endurance of women It is the fear of a ruined reputation which fear is made to do full duty as n cudgel to beat the sex into line but this fear as a weapon Is loosing its efficiency as Is being proved by the revolts that occasionally occur but how many wives who have gained sulllclent courage to brave the pub licit of divorce proceedings still dare not do It because of threas of vio lence from their owners How many No one can ever know for tho victimized wives dare not even tell of such threats and In truth many of their stories would not be credited if they did The horrible tails of the police courts could be plicated in every community among the socalled better classes among families who stand well in the com munity who attend church and tell us there Is a God who presides over the destines of men There may be a God presiding for men but the poor helpless subjected wives and mothers should not look to God for deliverance but to themselves Oh that could imbue them with suf ficient confidence to help them to make a stand for liberty assist them In raking a demand for justice and replace their fear with reliance in self Experience is a slow teacher hut It grinds exceedingly fine and there Is a crisis impending in domes tic relations that Is going to jostle looso the rusty fetters of tradition mid shake our system to Its founda tions bo many harrowing experiences of wives have been related to me the details of which would melt a heart of ptono that am overwhelmed and can only beg of women to release themselves lowliest citizen The old Roman said Be ye men and suffer such dishonor tj Men and wash not the stain away In blood Butt say He we women anti suffer such dishonor Women who seek to wash the stain away in tears and at the fountain drawn from Immanuels veins It seems to ma the fact that these monstrous wrongs exist ought to he sulllclent evidence that no god of mercy and justice who hears the cries Emancipation proclamation is necessary CZARS INCONSISTENCY The supreme head of the Greek Catholic Church has created a sensa tion by deserting his mistress and four sons Of course the Czar is lauded throughout Christlamlom for such a stop and ho Is courted and feted and Gods blessing Is bespoken for him though no one has heard any regrets uttered for the deserted mother of these four sons who can not Inherit their fathers throne or sentimental Czar has taken a foolish notion that God does not ap prove his course and Is therefore withholding his blessing In the per son of a legal son but he makes a mistake According to history God set his seal of approval upon the rulers who could lead the most dls solute life We have hint to trace the history of England and Germany and of the Popes to substantiate the statement Besides the Czar though being the father of four illlgitmate sons and five leglnmte daughters in ten years Is not so very bad when compared with his early predecessor Peter the Great In the memoirs of the Prin cess of Barclth a sister of Frederick the Great is an account of a visit to e court of Prussia in 1717 by the Czar Czarina son and daughter and four hundred ladles In waiting each with an infant in arms When asked about the paternity of the children each one replied My lord has done me the honor to make me its mother Instead of discarding one mistress and four sons he should have taken 400 If he wished to secure the favor cf God and that would not approxi mate the number held by Solomon the wise man of true Bible Imagine Peter the Great as the father of 400 children all Infants in arms Roosevelt should have lived during that reign and surely there would have been no necessity to talk about race suicide Awhile ago Princess Louise of Saxony ran away from a dissolute husband and she has been persecuted to the verge of insanity The child that Is soon expected Is to be forcib ly taken from r and she Is not to be permitted to return for fear she will contaminate tier younger sisters But the Czar Is more sought after than before Why this difference Louise Is a woman and upon woman was pronounced the curse from the beginning of the world She brought sin upon the race and must suffer toe tortures of the condemned here and tho Czar would like justifi cation for debauching women he might look over to his neighbors in the Roman and Protestant churches Familiar discounts tells us that in Rome there are such a multitude of illegitimate children born that par ticular monlstarles are built where they are brought up and the Pope is named their World The address of Dr Roberts at the Century theater Sunday was the exposition of his religious views thut he has delivered for somo time Thp main difference between Dr1 B Roberts and the late Robert In tsursol Is simply a matter of the con age displayed by each in the avowal of the doctrine espoused by both Thl doubts of Ingersoll as to the Immo tallty of tho soul and the Inspiration of the Bible were boldly declare With a daring spirit which has nevi boon equaled or surpassed he dealt the divinity of Christ and repudiate His scheme of distributions of Ie wards and punishments In a tutor life The greatest apostate of modem times never sailed under any Calte colors Ills Ideas his purposes ntlll honesty were newer suspected or mls r understood He never tried to street out of the remnants of the re Hglon which he attempted to destro a new faith to his own glorillcatlo and employment as the chief pries and prophet thereof He was onl a lecturer whose prime object and light seemed to be to horrify with hili sacrilegious audacity the curious diences whom his eloquence nttrac ed But Dr Roberts apparently neither such an idle nor a harmle purpose His addresses ho still styles sermons They are delivered on Sun day the holy day of the week In a theater which he chooses to call his church With some modification the phrases customs and rituals the Christian Church are used In his attack upon It old out of the wrcc and ruin which he Is striving to nc compllsh the iconoclastic doctor pects the expansion of the Church of This World an Institution unhollo ed by antiquity founded and sustali cd by human aid alone confining the restless mind of man to speculation only upon this present life proclalii lug the reliance upon the Immortalit of the soul as an absurd vanity anll offering no Inducement to be good or warning against crime except those precepts wnlch are laid down In doctors honk and the criminal cod aI t of laws and those pretty sayings the high school graduate on tho wa to be happy and successful Dr Roberts and his church hae waxed strong in this community but If he should discard pretense nnll come out honesty and boldly for Infi dellty or agnosticism there Is S01C doubt if he would be able to retal the sympathies of multitudinous audiences which weekly throng his theater attracted there and allure by the plausibility of his argument the power of his oratory the chant of his fine chorus of singers and his own pleasing personality WhetlK there Is strength In his bigness and popularity remains yet to be seen Asa day spellbinder his Is practically complete and Inltsputm- r The majority of the preachers In the city for some reason appear to he afraid to tackle htm possibly on count of his great eloquence and tellectual ability But some day perhaps some Christian minister In righteous indignation will catch him upon the hip and hand him ono der the fifth rib saying after the fash- Ion of Joshuas general How art thou my brother and then If the encounter Is lively enough to excite public attention the power and fluence of Dr Roberts and his churc will be deflnately determined V + V The above an editorial from the Kansas City Journal has been sen aplJlarentlcriticism of Infidels and mixes Injus tlce with Justice done to Col Inger soil displays Ignorance of Bible his tory and misquotes it It has a sug gestion that I think s with tit serious consideration of Dr Rolferts and his ninny friends among am proud to number myself I do not think that Dr Rooerts and his church In Kansas City have and ndequate conception of what ought to be the scope of his Influence Dr Roberts Is a man very little If any Inferior to Ingersoll as a thinker am as an orator mid yet while Ingersolli lecture platform was the whole of tin United States Dr Roberts Is not seer outside of his own city and oven that Is not one of the largest or most portant In America have witness ed the career of Rev Dr Robert Uave who In many regards was most a perfect protatype of Dr Roberts Dr Cave preached In Ken lucky as an orthodox clergyman of the Christian or Cambellite church lie was scholarly and exceedingly quent and of unblemished character He was ended to a charge in his de nomination in St Louis Mo and be coming skeptical started a church there and edited a magazine there almost exactly like Dr Roberts Is now doing Dr Cave for some years created great Interest and had large audiences of people of all kinds of re ligious or irreligious opinions His methods were almost Identically those of Dr Roberts and yet for a number of years past Dr Cave line been out of the public eye and ear and though of course he did good his influence wnned and he Is now al most unheard of and unsung I lIe lieve that his friends stood by him n long time hoping that ho would de velop into a cold open Infidel as gorsoll was and that they finally lost f Interest in him because they got tired of his compromise position between religion and Itellectual liberty and am afraid the friends of Dr Roberts will finally so regard him It is natural had not entirely tin just for the Christians to says that Dr Roberts Is nenrlng the livery of heaven to serve the devil In It seems to me that ho uses the word church and sermons as a means of allow ing many people to como and have an Inlldol lecture who have not the courage openly to avow their purpose tL2 That principle Is enunciated In the Christian scriptures as a proper one and Is practiced by the Christla clergy but it Is nevertheless an stance of the duplicity In Chrlstianll that Infidels are constantly arraign- Ing and which It Is natural to pose will ultimately react to the age of Dr Roberts man of Dr Roberts capacltrI trust be either an Infidel or tlanIt Is hardly possible that he could be a mugwump If he Is an In fidel he should discard the forms and nomenclature of Christianity If he Is a Christian he should not only re taut these but should teach the tenets of the Christian faith Lyman Abbott Is suppose doing some good as an Infidel In a pulpit He If an Improvement upon Jonathan wards or Moody or Dowle but he cer tnlnly Is a pigmy as compared with lugersoll and so will Dr Roberts be until he comes out plainly and as In gersoll did announce from the lecture stand all over the United States coldly and uncompromisingly the print pies which the world knows he entertains In his heart and brain and the pen honest proclamation of which to this day forces from the pen of the Christian editor of the Journal some tribute of praise that that edl tor evidently only pays because he dare not refuse to pay his pro rata of the honest debt that the world owes to Ingersoll believe with that tor that the main difference tween Roberts and Ingersoll Is sin t ya matterof courage and the world hates a coward and that edl tor Is adroitly using this fact in the absence of more logical argument to destroy the influence of Dr Robert The Inconsistencies of the Jonrnt editor as must be true of all Chris Unit apologists stick out like the enrs cf the ass from the lions skin If his words mean anything they certalnl imply in one place that the honesty cf Ingersoll was above the impeach went of any honest and Intelllgen man and yet this editor again teaches that the prime object and delight cf Ingersolls life was to make a bination of monkey and more vicious animal of himself Yet the Journa regarding Roberts as even inferior to Ingersoll represents that Roberts Is a power In the Journals city The reflection upon the Journals peopl Is evident Doctors books and codes of law and high schools as expositors of morals dont seem to cut much Ice with the Journal man the Bible supposably his nil In all When I say that our great clergy are afraid to tackle our representa tires of Infidelity It is regarded as n libelous slang but It is all right and dignified and true when uttered bj this Missouri defensor fidel gratin DelWhy does not the Journal itself that Incidentally claims great religious prowess take up the cudgel and give Dr Roberts the drubbing that It says the Doctor so richly de serves Other editorials In the Jour pal descant at length on money anti the other mere temporal interests ol this world and yet If what the Jour nal believes about Christianity be the truth about it the people of Kansas City the Journals own town are under the Inlliicnce of Dr Roberts rushing headlong Into hell as the hogs with 2000 devils in them did Into the sea In the country of the Jadarenes It would be well though for the editor of the Kansas City Journal to ruh up some in his Biblical attain ments before he goes up against Dr toberts There Is no such passage In the able as the Journal man attributes o it and the Incident alluded to by lie Journal as having one ofJoshuas enerals as a prominent character In it occured as will be seen from Samuel 2010 according to the an liorled versions of all Protestant ilbles years after Joshua was dend and when one of his generals ould not therefore have been tnk Ing any active part In tho affairs of this life The case that the Journal ecommends to some Christian Ister as a precedent in his dealings with Dr Roberts Is generally recognized as one of the most flagrant cases of hypocrisy known to the liter ry world 878 IS THE NUMBER OF COPIES OF DOG FENNEL IN THE ORIENT UBSCRIBED FOR TO THIS DATE J u THE BIBLE AND THESGHOO The Christians are forcing the hlble upon the school children for no er reason than that of making verts of them All other excuses are boldest of subterfuges There Is In the minds of the most ignorant of Christians the Idea that the reading of the bible will make Christians of the reader Such Is not the fact The opposite Is the truth The old and New Testaments known common as the bible are the best agencies that can be found to spread atheisr It Is the want of knowledge of the bible that permits a man or woman to become a Christian There are ful ly ten thousand things In the bible to Knock the props from under Chris tlanlty There Is not a book or chapter In either testament except but what teems with reasons wh a person would be a dolt to believe the nescient nonsense of Christ and his Galllleelan fisherman The dOCI trine of rewards for belief and Ishment for disbelief is the essence cf priestcraft It is a snare and a threat All ChutChes and all have laid people under them in so far as they had do so Atheisia or unbelief rilglon gion Is the rgck upon are ever wreeked and the strens the oceans of time and sam and the Jetsam are being nsbed against the rocks of disbelief and aro being slowly but surely ground to atoms Facts are stubborn things Unbelief is a fact a hard fact It has shattered many a cunningly deI vised holy scheme for maintaining a priesthood In clover The Atheist is not fighting to keep the Bible cut of the schools on account of any fear of the bible He is fighting for a principal Four young misse once brought to me the bible openei at the chapter containing the account cf the birth of the twins Esan and Jacob and asked me to read it to them I asked them where they became quainted with that chapter and the said at school and that the boys tai shown It to them If some Christian would read the details of that double birth In the bible they would no thank any one for placing such n book where boys could get a thane to reveal its filth to school girls It Is sheer Ignorance that keeps the Ruble In the public school Rellgloi and Ignorance are synonlnous tin more Ignorant the more religious Ai religion pales the world becomes more Intelligent Copernlclus knew more than the whole Vatican bund In his day Ditto Galllleo Columbus proved to the world that the doctors if Salmanlca were a set of Pharasee cat fools The burnt Bruno has risen Ike an intellectual Phoenix to con bund the descendents of his burners The Atheists use the Bible and quote It freely and they would be only too glad if every person would read it teed it as prayerfully and carefully as you please only read It We defy on to read It and still remain or be come Christian thereby challenge onr one to read the Bible and not perturb his or her faith It Is an utter impossibility for an Intelligent erson to do It A person who does not know the Import of English words mar spell It out and still remain in the dark but to the one who meets worl1sas familiar acquaintances will be stumped at a perusal of the Bible very time It Is said that every physician is halC an Atheists Every
