Imprimis the majority of them are s oo long to bo giv en a wide circulation 6y the dally press But while brevity In verse Is a very good rule K Is probable that the reader of thcsft particular poems when between the covers will not consider them too long for such per rural but rather will regret their too early ending Again the doctors excursions amount of Pegasus are to him but Heliconian holidays for Intellectual pastime and he seems not properly to prize the intrinsic quality of those lowers of fancy he plucks by the wayside and which he is about to hind Into a boquei for our better on joyment For this resaon few of his shorter poems have seen the light of publication It has been my privilege to read the manuscript of most of Dr Wil sons unpublished poems and can say with confidence that these com prise much the best of his work He has not always displayed the nicest discrimination in selecting the vcrst with which he tro Infrequently has favored the public Therefore that which he holds In reserve must prove a rare treat for those wno love real poetryI not with that excessive thusiasm which springs from a pleas ed surprise but with the considerable restraint of a reflective critic ordinarily stingy of compliment and who values always the integrity of his erary judgments when I say that this collection of Dr Wilsons poetical work will prove n revelation to the are as refreshing as a glimpse of green amid Saharan sands For the most part these poems deal directly with those things which of tenest come home to the heart of him who Is so blest as to be of rural origin who sprang from the soil and the roots of whose being still reach down Into Its generic element They carry their message to that mighty majority who conic from the coun try who wore stone brtilses with boyish pride and persistently handled toads In the happy hope of adding to a prized collection of warts who know the rare exultation born of red top hoots and the superlative joy that attaches to the first pair of suspen tiers who carved their Initials on the desks of district schools played fiendish pranks with pedantic peda gogues and trade love to small maidens whose coquettery was Inhaled with their first inward breath who climbed the tallest trees and dived In the deepest waters who drove the cows homeward through clovered fields and caught the horses In the pasture lot who purloined sweets from the pantry shelf and sucked er through a straw from the forbidden cask who smoked surreptlously hind the barn until a manly nausea rewarded the effort and thrilled the nascent soul who entered with abandon into all the frivolity of backwoods frolics and ate with an omul vorousness that would amaze the physiologists who fought their chums with friendly fervor and detested Sunday school with an honest hate who did these and the ninny other things that are done by natural boys who destined to make real men It Is difficult to define Dr Wil sons place In literature It would be more trite than true to say that he has created and occupies a new sphere In tho realm of poesy Rather has ho entered a familiar held and therein discovered a new and delight ful nook Ills writings are entirely different and eminently distinctive They resemble the work of Carleton more than that of any other yet are vastly superior In sincerity of style spontaneity of sentiment and effec the results They are master pictures of a viv id past and the virile present al though to the slavish student of a tyrannical technique they sometimes may seem to bo drawn with more of decision than precision Yet the vital element always Is there that eternal essence the presence of which Insures Immortality to the Old Oaken Bucket and will cause Rlleys 01 Swim mill Hole to be road as long as lan guage lives Those verses are added proof of the versatility of a man who heretofore has been known chiefly as an elo qiicut writer of philosophic prose a jat iI fU 1tt leader of were the cause of the curse on mankind through the so called fall The clergy tell us that woman was the cause of disease and death and an endless hell through eating the forbidden fruit What dreadful disaster has come to tIls world through the story so they say Let us examine the story Read the third chapter of Genes God has told Adam and Eve that they should not touch the fruit on the tree In the midst of the Garden If the did touch it or eat it they would surely die The serpent said unto the woman Thou shalt not surel die God doth know that In the da thou eatest thereof thou shalt Ile come as gods knowing good trom evil According to the story tho serpent told the truth and was wise Jesus says Be harmless as doves and wise as serpents A serpent is known an emblem of wisdom One writer says in Medical Talk In nil ancient symbolism serpent stood for wisdom and for chic power and this Is why it was represented as being the tempter of Eve Tho whole story of the Garde of Eden is rather mythical Again when Eve saw that the fruit was to make one wise she did eat- or it and gave also to her husban mo all other good women Then they went to dressing themselves and made aprons of leaves
