Interests me greatly Wcro tho world as familiar with his work in this lino as am the terest would bo universal There are several reasons why Dr Wilsons poems Ipro not gained a greater currency Imprimis the majority of them are s oo long to bo giv en a wide circulation 6y the dally press But while brevity In verse Is a very good rule K Is probable that the reader of thcsft particular poems when between the covers will not consider them too long for such per rural but rather will regret their too early ending Again the doctors excursions amount of Pegasus are to him but Heliconian holidays for Intellectual pastime and he seems not properly to prize the intrinsic quality of those lowers of fancy he plucks by the wayside and which he is about to hind Into a boquei for our better on joyment For this resaon few of his shorter poems have seen the light of publication It has been my privilege to read the manuscript of most of Dr Wil sons unpublished poems and can say with confidence that these com prise much the best of his work He has not always displayed the nicest discrimination in selecting the vcrst with which he tro Infrequently has favored the public Therefore that which he holds In reserve must prove a rare treat for those wno love real poetryI not with that excessive thusiasm which springs from a pleas ed surprise but with the considerable restraint of a reflective critic ordinarily stingy of compliment and who values always the integrity of his erary judgments when I say that this collection of Dr Wilsons poetical work will prove n revelation to the reading public There is uoUlin jSSwnttQHaJaljoyfc these productions in theIr very sim plicity Is the secret of their charm They have to do with the homely things of common lives which alas all too fast are becoming uncommon To every man with a memory If he be countrybred they will appeal like a dream of the past after a troubled day To the weary worldling In the vortex of urban activity they are as refreshing as a glimpse of green amid Saharan sands For the most part these poems deal directly with those things which of tenest come home to the heart of him who Is so blest as to be of rural origin who sprang from the soil and the roots of whose being still reach down Into Its generic element They carry their message to that mighty majority who conic from the coun try who wore stone brtilses with boyish pride and persistently handled toads In the happy hope of adding to a prized collection of warts who know the rare exultation born of red top hoots and the superlative joy that attaches to the first pair of suspen tiers who carved their Initials on the desks of district schools played fiendish pranks with pedantic peda gogues and trade love to small maidens whose coquettery was Inhaled with their first inward breath who climbed the tallest trees and dived In the deepest waters who drove the cows homeward through clovered fields and caught the horses In the pasture lot who purloined sweets from the pantry shelf and sucked er through a straw from the forbidden cask who smoked surreptlously hind the barn until a manly nausea rewarded the effort and thrilled the nascent soul who entered with abandon into all the frivolity of backwoods frolics and ate with an omul vorousness that would amaze the physiologists who fought their chums with friendly fervor and detested Sunday school with an honest hate who did these and the ninny other things that are done by natural boys who destined to make real men It Is difficult to define Dr Wil sons place In literature It would be more trite than true to say that he has created and occupies a new sphere In tho realm of poesy Rather has ho entered a familiar held and therein discovered a new and delight ful nook Ills writings are entirely different and eminently distinctive They resemble the work of Carleton more than that of any other yet are vastly superior In sincerity of style spontaneity of sentiment and effec the results They are master pictures of a viv id past and the virile present al though to the slavish student of a tyrannical technique they sometimes may seem to bo drawn with more of decision than precision Yet the vital element always Is there that eternal essence the presence of which Insures Immortality to the Old Oaken Bucket and will cause Rlleys 01 Swim mill Hole to be road as long as lan guage lives Those verses are added proof of the versatility of a man who heretofore has been known chiefly as an elo qiicut writer of philosophic prose a jat iI fU 1tt leader of In fallibly belongs to a past generation sf that the book was without doubt he work of the ancient Jewish prlesi who wrote It as the reflec tion di the moral standard of the time Among other things the Rev Dr R insey said Wihln a generation a revolutionary change has taken place In the general Ideas about the Bible It Is a beneficial change The old teatIdea the Bible was an Infallible book tom beginning to end all oftgiven divine Inspiration was the fruitful source of Infidelity as It is called It gave a grand opportunity to men like the Late Col Ingersoll to poke rill at the Bible and hold it up to rid So tong as the Idea prevailed that the w Bible was the Infallible word df God most men were afraid to criticism It It was treated as a fetish Nobody knew much about Its real character But just as soon as the critical examination of the Bible be gan tale old theory had to be aban doned Criticism was applied first to the Olij Testament It was discover ed that the Jewish religion like all others was a perfectly natural evolution It began In fetishism and ture w9rship and gradually progress ed to and high moral monothe ism nJ belief In one only God who was rl hteous and good Thief process of evolution does not appear upon the surface of the Old Testament The reason for this Is that Testament a not come Into existence until after the He brews Jliad arrived at the stage of belief especially to get a divine authority for their priestly as Is much that Is noble and worthy In he Old Testament espec ially In the writings of the great prophets and the Psalms But the perfect and imperfect the straw and grain are everywhere mixed gether How then can we get the truth and good which the Bible con talus Oniy by a process of Internal affinity by allowing what Is true and good to find us If any one says have no power of reason to test truth In the Bible have uo sensitiveness of conscience to judge the good there Is no chance for argument with such a man His religion can roily be a passive assent to dogmas which are given by his priest This Is not the religion of a reasoning rml thinking man The man who gets his religious beliefs In this way resembles one who Is con fined In an Institution for the feeble minded He cannot stray beyond Its wallS rnd he must be content to eat what Is act before him For ourselves we prefer to know the facts and truths as they are and to stand with those of whom it was said Ye shall know the truth and the truth will make you free I Surely the world Is climbing up to Rationalism If a preacher had denied the inspiration and infallibili not necessary to believe In miracles or election or predestination or eternal punishment and a lot of other things that have been deemed essentials to be a Chris Ramsiy says In plain words that the Bible Is NOT the word of God licit that Jewish priests wrote It and taught the people that Is was In spired In order to get power over the people mid extort tribute from them Rev Ramsey says Any one who gives passive assent to dogmas which are given by the priest resem bles one who Is confined In an Insti tution for the feebleminded The Frecthought press use no stronger as sertion than this To think that the Bible has been a fetish to human mind for 1500 years People were afraid to criticise It because they thought It the Word of God The Christians never did know what was In the Bible and they dont know today horrors and villainies that are within Its lids The Bible has been the most talked of and least read book in tho world Catholic 1f ii LLA laity the few ut them that could read wore not permitted to read It and the Protestants were content to listen to their preachers who have harped for hundreds of years on a few old mildewed texts that played frightenedInto the fold and hook Is so obscene that one friend will net read It to another In private With all the Bibles Sunday schools and preaching In our country not one Christian In ten can tell you weer- the commonest Freethinkers and fearless Instigators for truth and the truth Is rising In majesty not only In the In dividual minds but Is being pro claimed from pulpits and church councils To doubt reject or throw think about She didnt say a thing about the chunch of hog meat she had eaten for supper We passed judgment on that woman by Holylte law See Cor chap 35 and then others prayed to God to put their apetltes so they could not eat drink nor sleep That Is glorified leap piness for a Holyite but a human would call it the roar and crackle of the flame There appears to be two degrees In happiness In this Holylte heaven bound band Theres the high mocha muck who gets the chink that insures true happiness and the low chucks chink furnishes the chink and the chuck and the high mucka muck makes the low chucka chink think his lot Is a happy one and he surely does for we notice that when the high muck smiles the low chuck smiles when the high muck frowns the low chuck frowns etc Now If thats true happiness where Is true happiness to be found Now there is other noble characteristics belonging to a true Holylte One is that they cannot get mad because they know him whom the Sods would destroy they first make mad Another one Is they cant sin Of course they cant Under the son of Holylte philosophy which teaches that If one does wrong and dont know it they are not responsi ble for the wrong done because their master says If you do wrong and you dont know It how do you know It conshIImindedness to be admissible and It must be retroactive at the al tar since results have not proven otherwise at the threshold of sanctlll cation It was just as hard for a humped sack camel to go through a needle eye nineteen hundred years ago as it is for a sanctified Holylte to commit sin In the early dawn of the twentieth century One more shot and we are done A friend told me tonight after the meet ling that he overheard Brother Buck and Brother Clark talking lamenting how measly the Nebraska people were in their free will offering Think of It a great big elder In their midst and three to four hundred people at their meeting and only 355 taken In the hold up My friend says he joined in and helped them rebuke Ne braska for being so stingy and says he told the preacher and the elder that a dollar and twenty cents of the three fiftyfive was out of Holton peo pIe and that If they would go to Hol ton they would do well He says that they told him that was Just where we will go next and wanted him to arrange Immediately dont think that Brother Buck would have burned one of fundamental doctrine of all religions It is the very soul of the old Jewish Bible it runs lure a scarlet thread throughout the entire Old Testament it was the hope of the priests and prophets of ancient times it was the keynote of Christs life words and deeds and found its resurrf1CtlonCrom For two thousand years it has been the very foundation upon which the Christian churches have built and Social- Conscience The author of The Man with tli lion delivered a lecture recently In Cincinnati before Tlio Clarion Club on Thu Social Conscience Ho de monstratcd that tho stability of Jov eminent mid liitoilocliuil iirogres rests upon the Social Conscience of the people as applied to Lcjdslatlo Economics Morals and Religion As Is well known Mr Marklmm a Socialist of tho advanced typo on the subject of economics anti mo allty ho takes tho stand of all Literal vital essence of all these great principles the current upon which all these crafts sail tho serum through which all these tnrbulct corpuscles float according to Mr Marklmm Is tho Christian religion anticipated great pleasure In hear ing and meeting Mr Markham woos Man With tho hoe hind stirred the very depths of my being was not disappointed in him Ho looks thi poet and humanitarian and rcsen bles Longfellow greatly lie has a largo lestrous kindly beaming dart eye and Is most gentle and engagIng in manner Like Delis you get close to him as soon as you meet him mill feel that the common Brotherhood emanates from his personality You 1moet you arc acquainted and warm to him Mr Marklmm is not an orator lIut has a pleasing delivery of the Pro- fessorr style would have missed a much if I not heard him hut much more if I had not met him although I sought him after tno tire for tho purpose of warmly lectlj iclslng some of his statements Strange isnt it that Mr rshould so clearly perceive the Impel i fections and injustices of government monopoly and society and bolllly bravo tho public wrath by exposing these anti still remain apparently unable to perceive the religious spiracy Interwoven with these i wrongs Strange Isnt It that a mind so thoroughly conversant with the his tory of Reform with the lives und achievements of tho great Rational istlc Iconoclasts as evidenced in hIs lecture should bo so blind nppai ently to that one gigantic evil the Christian superstition against which these very Iconoclasts hurled tin strength of all their genius Strange isnt It that he would glor1 IfJT Kuch Infidels as Burns Shelle and Hugo in his lecture and at tin same time damn Infidelity and exalt superstition over Reason Yet such was the circumstance and upon this point I shall write In kindly criticism- It will not have the weight with either Mr Markham or yourselves that the criticism of a man of letters and national repute would have hut it is notimpossible that should sro as clearly as some others and vise as wisely on a point which have carefully studied With the Socialistic Economic and Humanitarian theories advanced bj Mr Marklmm am In perfect accord In fact he charmingly and convlnc ingly expressed tho sentiments which Rationalists have been advancing for centuries which myself though a much younger man have expressed many times and before Mr Markhair became generally known It Is wholly to the religious stand lie took that will direct my crltl his personal illustrations mark ing thin evolution of Tho Social Con Iscience It Is remarkable that lit advance the name of one great theologian lust Instead Intro dnced the names of several Pagan philosophers and coming down to a later period drew his illustrations from the lives anil teachings of Vanl nl Bruno Dante Luther Shakes mean Burns Goethe Shelley talre Washington Abraham Lincoln and Victor Hugo Read those nannies again Everyone an build Mark this well thatu you will remember It when give you Mr Markhams extolment ol pronounced churchman In tho list Is Luther But Luther reality was a revolutionist a destruc tlonlstIf living today ho would be called an Anarchist Ho was a mighty personality an apostate an Infidel evolution but a man of nmnll percep thou and narrow power of reason Ho won a great victory by virtue of his fearlessness ills only claim up on tho gratitude of mankind Is that lie weakened superstition by splitting It Ho was of two small brain to originate and carry out a reform He left his followers where ho found themIn superstition Danto Is also classed as a churchman but he closer studied ho gradually reveals himself as a Rationalist in disguise Tho same Is discovered in Milton These great poets saved their heads by writing of Gods Devils spirits and goblins Instead of writing of men They aro what I call smothered gen buses Nothing of which they wrote really concerned then or human Imp ness Dante Is a deal ore although Mr Markham extolled him to tho skiesIwould rather possess tho honor of leaving written Tho Man With the lion than of having written tho In ferno The difference Is that tho ono is a live and tho other a dead subject There will always bo men and there will always bo lines but angels std devils have ceased to bo a consldera tlon Milton Is transcendnnt in rhetoric 1 and breathes music like a great gan loft but no where touches the heart would rather have the honor of writing Thin Cotters Saturda Night than the whole of Paradise Lost It will be reap longer Both of these men were really an tagonlstlc to Christianity and con coaled their Impracticable and useless theology by garbing It with thin attire of angels and goblins damnedgen his wasted In fictions myterles cay Oils clouds and other Incomprehen slblo nothingness They are hath erary suicides dead ones because theology Is dead All the other great characters touched upon by Mr Markham were either Deists or Atheists Lincoln Hugo and Shelley ho simply glorified Lincoln often from policy as he frankly confessed talked of God In his proclamations of State but In not one single instance did he admit or recognize the divinity of Christ or the religion of the Christians HIs wife his law partners his most mate friends like Judge David Davis his autobiographers Hay and Nice lay have settled this matter perma nently and beyond dispute Lincoln was an Agnostic Inclining to Deism and an open denier of the divinity of Christ He wrote a book which his law partner Herndon of the same be lief threw In the stove as he saw Its publication wluld ruin Lincolns polit Ical prospects Lincolns religion gan and ended with Providence Mr Markham surely knows all about this yet he almost deifies loll del Lincoln and at the same time damns Infidelity ranking it with An arch After thus llustratlng the evolution of The Social Conscience by pointing chiefly to lives of great Pagans and Infidels of the world as the bea con lights and prophets of the coming Brotherhood of Man Mr Markham came to The Man of Galilee and the religion practiced In his name These he deified above all things Christ to him is actually God To deny the Divinity of Christ he said is to surrender Reason and Conscience and to sink to the lowest depths of moral Iniquity Strange isnt it that a man ol Mr Markham learning would apply such malediction to such great and pure men as Darwin Spencer Haeck el the great Doctors of learning among the Jews and Unitarians nearly emery learned Doctor of Medicine in the world and to thin millions of superior beings besides Mr Markhams indorsement of Christ and Christianity was one ol the strongest I ever heard I cannot give his exact words as quote from memory and the lecture was given over a month ago Like nearly all Socialist speakers he endeavored to make Christ out as the great Socialist quoting several of his teachings as illustrating his Socialistic ideas but either steering far away from or adroitly explaining Ills other teachings antagonizing the modern Socialistic principle such as came not to bring peace but a sword to put husband against wife and son against fatheretc To him that hath shall be given and to him that hath not even that he hath shall be taken away and much other of his teachings which disprove the cialism of Christ- Socialists are trying to tack on to Christ while Christians those high est In learning and authority repu Hate Socialism and denounce It as the output of hell Whether Christ was a Socialist or not may be best determined not by his contradictory teachings but by the RESULTS of those teachings And what have been the RESULTS Didnt he figure as a King Have not tyrants and despots ruled in his none Hasnt selfish men made unto themselves the Mammon of Unrighteousness Hasnt husband been turned against wife and son against father Hasnt the sword governed stead of peace Isnt his chief interpreter upon earth today the greatest extortioner of money front the weak and Ignorant Isnt he a triple crowned despot the enemy of free thought free government and every thIng related to Socialism Didnt flue very flexible teachings of Christ result In drowning the world In tin Mood of the Innocent And Is It not true that It Is those very teachings which today far far above every er Influence holds the world back ind retards the solution of the economic and humanitarian problems widths most concern our happiness The RESULTS of Christs teachings not tho warring opinions advanced concerning them must determine whether or not he was a Socialist The facts aro that he was made to talk two ways mod he talked MOST for King and aristocrat and author ty and nianimom and war and fan Iiy contention and by the fruits you must judgo of the tree A school boy ought to bo able to see this and just why Socialistic leaders will make themselves ridiculous by trying to bag Christ cannot un lerstand Want of commmon ordinary iqrceptlon suppose Mr Markham utter dwelling at length upon the everlasting vitality necessity and supremacy of tho Chris tan religion and tho Godman re urned to Infidel Hugo whom ho al uost deified and to Lincoln whom ho clothed with Inspiration He recited his Ode to Lincoln a masterpiece- of thought surpassing The Man With the Hoe- Continuing on bran eloquent strain he prophesied the coming of a now human era The Brotherhood of Man he declared Is almost In sight Voltaire Goethe Burns Hugo and Lincoln saw It from afar and mark Its coming and Shelley saw It like a starIt wns thus that lie closed the lecture Beginning with the Infidelho ended with the Infidel Shelley tho Atheist saw It a star Isnt It a little strange again asl that inasmuch as Mr Markham placed Christ and Christianity at the head of all thought and progress that he didnt draw his Illustrations from the lives of tho Popes from Melam thon Wesley Knox Edwards New man Spurgeon Moody and Talmage Why did lie go to the infidel Pope Leo who Is Christ on Earth Is credited with being a man of rare discernment Why dont he see It like a star Instead he Is the bitter enemy of every economic thought Marklmm holds In his brain When Leo goes stargazing he dont tool for prophets llko Markham on the was one of the most remarkc ble lectures to which ever listened Inasmuch as thin lecturer drew hIs inspirations from the lives and teach Ings of men whose religious prlnci pies he denounced Very naturally one Is led to an ana lysis of the Influences which would lead Mr Markham Into such an Illog teal position Was It from policy Does Mi Markham thus hope to advance reform by soothing the dull cold ear of Christian bigotry Neither Shelley nor Hugo took such a stand Not one great Scientist of today takes such a stand Not one great Reform er who lives In the memory and gnat hide of mankind has taken such a great Rationalist in the world has been able to perceive that Instead of being Socialistic Christianity Is the avowed enemy of Social Ismof Human Brotherhood It has been the Rock of Ages behind which Kings despots butchers extortioners and enslavers of men have fortified themselvesAs stated these have been the RESULTS taken as a whole of Christs teachings and the RESULTS must and do determine the actual bent drift and conclusions of Christianity It Is Idle to table of Christ having been misinterpreted misunderstood Mr Markliain like all other Christian Socialists thus apologized for the crimes that have been committed in his name They profess that they understand him while all the thinkers of the last 1800 years they declare have been unable to Interpret him They view him as the first great Soclllasts and thus attempt to win over Christianity to Socialism This Is actually ridicu lous said to Mr Markham You your self are today endeavoring to do the very things that Christ and his apos ties left undone You are trying to rectify their mistakes You are doing that which his priests do not approve of The clergy of this city have Ig nored you none of them are here The Pope has Issued a bull against your teachings and warned the world of the evils they will lead to Since Christianity Ignores you will have nothing to do with you why hang to it and throw sop to it Mr Markham Has It not been the greatest question with every government of the earth what to do to get rid of and throw off Christianity Isnt Italy franco and Spain today In a mighty struggle with the giant of superstl ion Does not the very life of this nation depend upon its rejection of and dissolution of partnership with Christianity Itself must be reformed Christianity How then can you see any Socialistic Reform In Christianity Is It not plain that Christianity Itself must be reformed must be civilized before the Brotherhood of Man can be possible And Is it not plain that man has advanced thus far only as the Christian power has been broken How conies It that you have selected Infidel reform ers chiefly In illustrating your lect Why advance Christ as the cialistic ideal when he said nothing whatever vital on the subject when he a God left humanity to suffer cen inrles of tortures and tears before- It acquired by its own sufferings the intellectual liberty to speak what you have spoken today And why deify Christianity when men have had to fight It that humanity might be free to speak its honest thought As long as Christianity Is crowning despots and J9lnlng In robbing the people and Popes and Primates are hurling their anathemas upon all economic reform what Is left for any human arian to do but fight It Instead of apologizing for It Why Is It that It has required 1800 yens for men to find out that Christ was a Socialist Didnt he proclaim himself a King What had to say for Democracy Vere not all his Ideals of government Imperialistic and haven the selfish brutes of earth seized upon and es ablished and maintained his Imper allstlc Ideas and havent the true humanitarians of the earth had to wade through blood to overthrow hefm Are not the Freethinkers day still fighting lest through carelessness we lose the little hold we have gained and drop back to the Christ Ideas of government Is It not a backward step to hold on to Christ and Is It not a depreciation of the work of great Infidel and Evolution try Reformers who opposed Christi inlty and who have given us all the freedom wo have to still hold up Christ as the Ideal Socialist and his teachings as thin basis of all reform This was tho substance of my talk with Mr Marklmm and tho exact wads as near as I can remember them In reply ho admitted the strength of my statement but thought we siiould not bo too htfsli that Jhrlstlanlty is growing more liberal mil should bo treated kindly and considered respectfully That can be done replied with out deifying It and without calling Its vices virtues without givlg It credit for the progress of today ki when its history has been opposition to frcethought free speech and to all Intellectual progress It seems In can slstent to mo to praise Infidels and tnen damn their Infidelity and then credit Christianity with tho progress Infidels have made Right lucre Is seen the false tlon of nearly all Socialistic spea ers grow more and more disgusted with them every day The old Popo conies out with a Dull against Social Ism classing It with Anarchy ar Atheism and these Socialistic speak ors wont say a word In reply but Instead lickspittle the Pope their worst enemy and damn Infidelity their best friend If it hadnt been for the lead Infidelity has ever taken and now occupies a Socialist wouldn dare open his mouth today But nearly all Socialists are afral to bo known as Infidels or Agnostics They are even cautious about attend Ing thulr meetings They prefer tc tag on to the shirt tall of St Peter to walking arm In arm with Thomas Paine and Herbert Spencer am a Socialist but not of that brand They are trying to make a Socialist of Jesus who posed as a King and who bragged of the Kingdom he would set up both here and in heaven and how he would establish It with the sword and put father against son to accomplish his ends and this Is just what his teachings effected and they have proven the greatest curse that ever fell upon the world Now that the world Is beginning to throw off this nurse at the sacrifice of a thousand years of agony of the tor ture and enslavement mentally and physically of billions of men and wo men and tho slaughter of untold mil lions It is a little too much at this late day to hear enlightened men ex tol It and depreciate the opposing forces which freed us from It Such Tommyrot makes me sick and must say that was disappointed in tnls particular In Mr Mark ham and what I shall now say to him I believe will be for his own goodfor his good name and fame If he is ambitious to leave such as a her itage to humanity would say to him cut loose from all such subserviency step out of such a ridiculous position dont fawn dont render false praise be decided be one way or the other dont temporize dont straddle dont compromise dont apologize dont smother facts That was the mistake of Jesus he was too many sided He talked In too many ways He stood for the poor one moment and then for the mammon of unrighteousness the next One day he was for peace and the next for the sword The RESULT was taht the selfish ruling powers adopted the brute side of his muddleed conceptions and maintained them with the sword just as he had taught them The Right is Right and no man ambitious to leave a great and last Ing name behind him can afford to compromise with Wrong Tlfatwasnt the way of Shelley that wasnt the way of Burns that wasnt the way of Voltaire that wasnt the way of Victor Hugo that wasnt the way of Walt Whitman that Isnt the way of Spencer and Haeckel or of any of the great Im mortals of Reform What was it made Shelley one of the great Intellectual forces of the world and what is it that constitutes his greatness today Brighter and brighter glows his glory Wherein lay his strength He was on the unpopu lar side He was damned while living and long after he was dead He Is still damned but he grows and grows he rose above superstltlton and myth He looked ahead and not behind He saw farther than the crowd and told what he saw Unlike Mr Markham he didnt go backward- to the Christ myth but forward to Hu nanlty He cut loose from superstl lon and error and thought and talked for absolute Intellectual emanclpa thou He was uncompromising He was a poetic genius but not therein lay his strength and power As a poet he never touched the heart of the masses but only the heart of the student and scholar But as Atheist Humanitarian Defender of Human Rights and Mental Emancipator the whole Intellectual world sees him like a star like the lone and glow- Ing Jupiter rising above dark trees In the early evening sky The same may be said or Burns Herein lies the strength power and fame of these two great poet human arlaiiH While Scott was exalting royalty Burns was exalting man But ew today read Scott Milton loaned his genius to strengthen error and Shelley gave his to lead men out of It Milton moved among angels archangels spirits good and bad hv heaven and hell while Shelley among men md Interpreted their sorrows and wrongs and woes and wants Today Milton Is only studied as a master of rhetoric while Shelley Is an ever vital force and Influence among men There has been no great poet Icon oclast since his time unless we reek on Whitman as such But Whitman too Is a rhetorician lIe has to be studied and then Is not always understood He Is too vague and abstract lie dont hit the nail on the head He Is not warm Humanity doesnt get close to him like to Burns Whittier think conies closer to the heart of Humanity He was a Unitarian He didnt believe tho God man but was all the time tall lng about The Fattier and The Son and The Savior and Prayer nn so Interwove the Christian myth Into his Iconoclasm that he succeeded In extinguishing all Its force He will be known as the author of Maul Muller and Barbara Frltch in two simple pleasing ballads He might have been an American Shelley but ho couldnt see far enough Bryant was a naturalist and Longfellow and Poo mere sentimentalists inong women Alice Cary might have risen to great heights but she too couldnt forget Tho Father and Son long enough to solve some of tho problems of humanity Ella Wheeler Wilcox has the same weakness She reached her limits in t Laugh and the world langhs with you But Markham has really tho pie hriof humanity Like Burns and Shell inequntiesBut he lacks In strength and Indlvi uallty He Is bravo In dealing with cowardbwhich upholds and sustains these itpositions lie too much of a stray fromthedwarfhimgreat poets Tho truly great poet Is he who grows out of his clilldhooi who stands apart like genius amid mediocrity So far Markham occi positionItnot he will develop out of It Then lives no poet today who Interpret the times who looks ahead as Burn and Shelley looked Individualityitnot require one tenth tho courage to express today the bold truth as In Burns and Shelleys ago Where Is the poet the duel chronicler of the times to Interpre the progress the forward stride Is able but he seems enchained to the dark ages to orien tal mysticism Nearly all of his poems are tinctured with tho Katli er and the Son Ills soul goes out to suffering Humanity but ho cant get away from the superstition that enthralls It Unless he sees differently he will he known for a short timE as the audio of The Man With the line only thIs and nothing more lIe will be like Whittier who wrote much only to he remembered as the author of two or three Insignificant ballads Several of our American poets have Interpreted Nature and the affections well lint accepting Whitman none have Inter preted the spirit of the age It is In the power of Mr Markham believe to effect this If he will if evolutes out of his childish sentimen tal attachment to ancient myth The time is ripe for un AmerIcan Shelley Who will he be In a hun dred years from now Sabbath Is a Thing of the Distant Past According to the View of Philadelphia Judge From Cincinnati Enquirer Philadelphia March ntngl trate Gorman aimed blow at the Sunday DIne laws and the act of 1794 when he discharged represent tine of the Press the Ledger the North American the Crane Ice Cram Company and the Union News Com pang who were arrested on charges of having violated the blue laws and the provision of the act of 17J4 magistrate Gunman declared that the law Is vague in Its definition of worldly employment and Insisting that the word necessity varies In construction according to tho Indl victuals concerned The prosecutors in these cases called themselves the Sunday obscr ante Association and have declared that they were animated solely the desires to retaliate for the pros cution brought against small store keepers and barbers for keeping tlwll places open on Sunday Gormans Opinion- In the course of his opinion Mag- Istrate Gorman says Although the warrants were sued for the arrest of the clerks In the employ of the newspapers aboe mentioned for the violation of the lICt of April 22 1714 the latter arsume full responsibilities for the spill act and defended on the broad round that the act of April 22 1711 und r which the prosecution Is brought Is unconstitutional and because It violates Section 3 of article of the Declaration of Rights of tho Con stitution of Pennsylvania which reads All men have a natural and hid e fatigable Hght to worship Almlghl God according to the dictates cf thdr own consciences by compnlscry n forcing an observance of a which a large part or a majority of the community observes s the Lords Day and in reference to their rell glous sentiments by a total rrohit tlon of the natural right to work and labor by all outer persons of tin same communityIt admitted that en Sunda March 15 1903 at the county of Philadelphia the North America the Press and the Public Ledger were published and sold and the wino wealth contends that thla act was a violation of the act In every case heretofore corstrue and adjudicated tho point raised wt as to the necessity of the work done Sunday Observance The act to compel all to cbsenSunday as a sacred day To oblige men to refrain from labour out of reo lu iltrlrolnTesB is to control their religious observance as much as If they were ordered to kneel tie fore the altar Such power would be a perfect union of church and State so much abhorred by the people of this republic It would Inevitably lead to ref glous persecution and finally to civ and religious tyranny The doctrine that the Christian religion is a part of the common law Is suppose the foundation and Jui tlflcatlon of this act That doctrine was promulgated In the worst times and by the worst men of a Government that avowed united church and State I think it may be safe to spy that the Constitutions of the United State and of Pennsylvania are founded no religion on purely civil con slderatlons on the rights of mar one of which is that man shall not terfere with the rights of conscience The act of 1794 was passed for the sole purpose of observing Sunday In deference to the religious sentiment of a majority of the Christians auto prevent its profanation applyinj the principle of State decisis must consider the contention of de fendents upon this point agains them and decline to find as a matte of law that the act does con laene the Constitution Worldly Employment The statute does not describe or designate worldly employment and any criminal enactment which leaves the description of crime to the pri vate judgment of the Magistrate wanting in validity because It is nt definite standard for tIll guidance of the must be a more dell nlte standard and more explicit actment than that which leaves not the innocence or guilt of tho person to be determined but whether the Magistrate not the law declares an act to be a crime To say that development and wonderful growth of State and city did not make many things a necessity ttday which were not a necessity when the act was passed would be to Ignore an obvious and patent truth The defect in the Information by the omission to aver that the publication and sale of newspapers on Sunday was not a necessity is fatal If it were necessary to determine should certainly be inclined to de clde that the publication of a newspa per on Sunday Is a necessity Per haps no enterprise whether we slow newspapers commercially or In a erary sense has made such rapid and marvelous strides as the public press It protects the weak and encour ages the enterprising and teaches lessons of morality to those who novo or hear tho word of God except such as may bo published In a newspaper It Is well known that there is a congregation of nonchurch going per sons to whom newspaper ad dresses Itself every Sunday have no doubt that a very large num her of citizens would dispense with somo necessities to obtain their news dasr IjjL reasons which it seems useless to mention the press Is a necessity nnll should so consider it even if I was not aware that at least 400000 persons buy and perhaps equally as many more read newspapers WRITES A BILLYDO TO THE GOVERNOR OF CONNECTICUT New Haven Conn Mar 29 1903 To His Excellency Abram Chambf lain Governor of Connecticut Dear Slr1 have been Informed of your proclamation ofthe 25th Inst setting aside April 10th next as a day of fasting penitence and prayei and you further request that all the people of this Commonwealth In their homes and various places of worship to confess their faults and entreat the forgiveness and favor of Almighty God who promises in His holy word that the nations who otl serve these duties shall understand the loving kindness of the Lord to which you atllx the official seal of the StateI to be a lawabiding cltlze but in this case positively refuse to observe this day April 10 or an other day Sundays included as a holy day or as a day of fasting pen nonce or prayer also positively refuse to confess any faults that may have to the Christian Jehovah to which you refer or to entreat the forgiveness and fa or of the same You speak of something that yc call the Almighty God Wil you kindly show him to me tell mo where he is and what he looks like As the State is supposed to lleal with nothing but well known facts ask you to produce this god for we have never seen him A reward of 1000 Is offered to any person who will prove the existence of God heaven hell Holy Ghost a Savlous who can forgive sins or the devil This offer is made by the Kansas Fre thought Association We expect yo to provo what you spy and here is a good poportunity for you to do und win 1000 If the heavens and the earth were created out of notliing by this AI mighty God about six thousand years ago as he tells us what ask was he doing In the great eternity of the past before he created the heaver and the earth Was he having an eternal sleep with nothing upon which to rest his head or did he sud denly spring Into existence a few thousand years ago This god that you ask us to worship is said to able to divide himself up into thre parts each part being a god con plete in itself one part being the father to the second part and the third part being a ghost of tho othe two lOne part is equal to all three and iIal1 three only make one It tell about ghost part coming in cot tact with a virgin one time and the result was that the second part this god was born If it takes three parts to make one god as tke Bible tells us then we had a god a short time at least with one part missing part of the Almlght Is said to have been crucified by a few Jewish fanatics a few centuries ago and we are told that Jehovah adopted and sanctioned this method to rescue the world from an imagln ary hell and if we only believe this foolish story we will bo saved and our sins will be forgiven This is called the doctrine of tin atonement And it is the most dan gerous and malignant doctrine that was ever invented by men Under Its protection the blackest crimes ma be committed virtue can be forsaken to live the life of a thief poly gamlst or drunkard and by slraplj accepting a belief In an Impossible savior at the last monment all our crimes are washed away and we ge scot free Into realms of the blessed That Is a Christian lie For Jesus paid no more of it Than either you or Perhaps Jehovah will keep his promise as you would have us be lleve but the chances are that he will not for the reason that he falls to carry out many of his other prom ises Take for instance the promise he makes to Abram And will make of thee a great natlonGen xII And he repeats It to Moses Now therefore let me alone that my wrath may wax hot against them und that may consume them will make of thee a great nation Exodus xxxil 10 after Moses argued with him the Lord repented of the evil which lie thought to do unto his people Bx xxxli and finally he decided to back out But did he make of Abram or Moses a great nation He did not low then are we to know that he will carry out his other promise that ou mention In your proclamation Phis manmade government of the United States is far more preferable than any monarchy that Jehovah ever boasted of setting up and if he had kept his promise by showing the world a model form of government that insures political and economic quality to all there never would have been such a thing as a street strike in Waterbury with its con omlttent lawlessness and resultant tinder A few days ago you offered a ward for the capture of the murderer to bring him to Justice to answer for his crime Now you turn right around and fer this same murderer a chance to scape the just punishment of his rime If he will only go hungry re IlIut and pray for forgiveness on your sQcal1ecl holy day If criminals can be cleansed from their sins by your Christian jheme of salvation what is nse- of offering a big sum of the States money for their capture and punishment To bo consistent you should withdraw one proclamation or the other You cannot stand by both Although your Good Friday pro 1 i rh 11 clamation is as you say in harm with established custom it is about time that they ceased and I denounce your religious proclamation as unAmerican unpatriotic and an open violation of the Constitution which says in substance No preCer ence shall be given by law to Chris tlanlty or any other special religion I send you herewith a few leafiets also showing why the church anll State should be kept forever selJar ate Yours for True American Litl erty ALBERTO FISHER 58 Plerpont St The Garden of Eden Story- Analyzed By Hortense Malcom Phelps For centuries or more this story has been preached and it Is Impos ble to say tho trouble it has cause Women have had this passage of scripture placed before them as falllt less before their two eyes ao they could rend it as It went The suffer- Ing that humanity has undergone Is past finding out with the interpr tatlon that has been placed on the storySometimes husbands have uscd this passage for their selfish motive and wives have been led to tlelleve that they were the weaker vessels and how they were the cause of the curse on mankind through the so called fall The clergy tell us that woman was the cause of disease and death and an endless hell through eating the forbidden fruit What dreadful disaster has come to tIls world through the story so they say Let us examine the story Read the third chapter of Genes God has told Adam and Eve that they should not touch the fruit on the tree In the midst of the Garden If the did touch it or eat it they would surely die The serpent said unto the woman Thou shalt not surel die God doth know that In the da thou eatest thereof thou shalt Ile come as gods knowing good trom evil According to the story tho serpent told the truth and was wise Jesus says Be harmless as doves and wise as serpents A serpent is known an emblem of wisdom One writer says in Medical Talk In nil ancient symbolism serpent stood for wisdom and for chic power and this Is why it was represented as being the tempter of Eve Tho whole story of the Garde of Eden is rather mythical Again when Eve saw that the fruit was to make one wise she did eat- or it and gave also to her husban mo all other good women Then they went to dressing themselves and made aprons of leaves and Adam named his wife and God tool an terest in them and made coats of skins and clothed them No wonde people are looking to God toclothe them as he was better to sinful Mat and Eve than to some of the raoder saints that call on him to helpam cording to the story Then God said Behold the man is become as one of us confirming what serpent said Is not this advanced condition to know good from evil Good thing And now lest he put forth his hand and take of the tree of life and eat and live forever the Lord sen him forth from the garden and he placed at the east of the garden cherubim and a flaming sword which turned every nay to keep the tree o lifeNow the tree of life Is for all thosi who want life and no angel or cheru blm stand in the way of it to guard it for all enter who are develops and worthy to receive it The tree of life means something high and holy Read Rev To him that overcometh will give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of paradise of God Again read Prov ill 18 Happy is the man that finds wisdom she Is the tree of lift to them that lay hold upon her allll happy is every one that retainetli herThere are other passages of scripture which have a spiritual meaning as well as the above If any reader of this story wll stop and consider what the crime is and what the story really means they would readily derstand it Eve saw the difference between good and evil and their eyes were opened In this enlightened ago we are not glad when people ad vance so their eyes are opened and turn from evil and live a godly life Is not womans perceptive power gen rally better than a mans awl will she not generally solve greater mys cries Should she not stand side by jiile with man when she is the mother of the nations Peace on earth and good will toward men will never je until woman Is among the leaders of the day Again God said Behold the man also the woman has become as one of us A crime to be one with God Have we got to fall to become gods Our reasoning powers do not tel1 us so All advanced people who live on a higher plane of life are considered then from grace as well as Adam and Eve and have become Infidels so says the church that are robed In their formality and pride Clergy tell us that we live forever According to this story the Tree of Lifo was not partaken of so how came we to live forever as It was guarded by an angel lest we eat of It Awake Oh man awake and putt your reasoning powers We all havc a right to question what fruth and all that will not stand the ivestigatlon will certainly in time Ilas6 away as light and truth comes Should we be classed as Infidels cause we criticise these passages Are we not all children of God and nature A great many advanced ergymen and laymen have dared go outside of their manmade ordl nance and thier rigid doctrines which have their origin In the Roman t 1m n church They investigated to find out from whence and where came these stories and we have good authority that the same Garden of Eden stor also other stories the same as ours are found in the old scriptures which existed some hundred of years tlefore our Bible was compiled by Moses and they are still in existence Moses ceralnly borrowed this Garden of Eden story from the ancient Bcrltl this story has any meaning It Is the regenerated state the souls Eden the garden of God as some souls in their existence call it The are constantly at home in Infinite whole and at rest where we are bathed in the waters of life All adepts live in this state The time Is not far distant when this story wil not be preached E err ono will be free to Investigate truth for themselves The law of Is progression and tho time will tie when woman will take her place side by side with man and the sto of Eves transgreslon will lose Itself through the law of evolution Otterville Out A MOST DESIRABLE TRIP The Dedication of the Worlds Fair Grounds and Buildings Will Be Well Worth Seeing The dedication
