scientists He wants none to be greater than himself sail what with the little enllghtment he has received from Rationalistic source and the part of the bigot he is compelled to play It Is evident that his reason Is as rattled as a rooster pushed from his perch In the middle of the night From the very tact that Rationalism has pushed him to the point of hav Ingto proclaim his orthodoxy Is the best evidence of Freethought prog ress Emperor William well knows that the preaent day glory of Germany lies not In her aristocracy not in her mil Itary display In In the glory of her scientific great men He would be one among rem If he dared and he dared as far as he daredst and then had to skeedaifdle bash into the ranks of the ghostly They are having a big mixup In Germany The Socialists In order to methods were best to pursue In securing religious educa lion As might have been expected n diversity of opinions wer express cd and the three days session journed without any definitely outlined plan of proceedure Some of the speakers made nro remarkable statements a few of which follow As reported by the Chicago Chronicle the speakers were unanimous in agreeing that the churcn dogmas become impossible This convention could have saved time and money by asking Infidels that question and tho answer would have been just exactly what these perts have declared President J B Agnell of University of Michigan says The only hope of perpetuation for the church lies in the instruction for the young Now with due courtesy for this educator we disagree with him Education for the young means disintegration of the church not per petuation of It There is no other conclusion to be reached The stronghold of the church is BELIEF when belief Is displaced by scientific demonstration the perpetuation of church dogmas became impossible now the President of a College can make statements in the same breath that are diametrically opposed to each other cannot be understood We not expect ministers to be logicians or even to be reasonable but we do expect our educators to be consistent Education of the young Is the best method possible to overthrow the church and we who are working ward that end thank President Angell for such public recommandation though we have no regard for his Francis E Clark gave some information that could also have been obtained at the Congress of the N L P He said There are many ligious dyspeptics In the churches They are billions and disappointed and hopeless and useless Many a church is dying because of the apath- of Its members The N L P coui not however have made a better recommendation than Rev Clark made though the natural results if followed would not lead in the direc tion Brother Clark intended He de clares that the church is too exclu sively centered in its religious In struction and recommends that training schools for Instructing min l isters In psyschology be established Such advice coming from the pres Meet of the Society of Christian En deavor to be put into execution for the benefit of ministers smacks strongly of the ludicrous Psychology a scientific study of the mind to form a course of instruction for the representatives of God who are sup posed to be called of master and supplied with mental food from heav en is another paradox which excites our visibles We imagine that these extremely humorous contradictory expressions relieve the pressure upon tho hearts of Infidels who are help- Ing to hear the burdens of humanity by opening the floodgates of laughter There are many funny things happen- Ing every day if we could raise our tired eyes long enough to see them Walter L Hcrvey one of the board of education of New York is excus able because of his secular training for saying that Ministers should be taught One constantly associated with the study of natures truths as is the ease In Our public schools siders such methods applicable to all sorts and conditions of men But he should remember that ministers are thought to be only a little lower than angels the consecrated elect the vinely Inspired of society and that therefore ordinary everyday search for knowledge is too strenuous for their spirituelle phy sique the diet too strong for their ethereal digestive apparatus the men tal food too mundane for their sara phlc cranial cavity and their consti tution would suffer collapse if such a course were persisted In Mr Hervoy further demonstrates his secular training by declaring that religious study is chaotic and we need a clearing house of ideas A clearcut statement and one that needs no comment Rev W C Bitting Baptist N Y tells how the public school has crept ahead of the Sunday school In our humble opinion the public school has always been ahead of the Sunday School and it will remain as far ahead as facts are ahead of fancies as truth Is in advance of error The brethren are characterized for their effoteness and a germicide recom mended for theological bacilli These are not very complimentary remarks but we are taught that if the eyo offend thee pluck it out for it is bet ter to enter heaven maimed than to be cast into hell with all thy mem bers etc It is an invariable rule that when church dignitaries get Into a tight place they seek to evado responsible ity by shifting same to the shoulders of others and woman the worlds bur den bearer and the churchs scapegoat did not escape In this conference The President of Ohio Wesleyan University declares the family in this case the motherto he responsible for igious failures in education Now the priesthood has for centuries as sumed the position of dictator not only for the young but for the mid dleaged and for those full of years When failure perches upon their ban ner they should capitulate uncondit lineally or defending their po not try to shield themselves with the scanty garments of Mother EveWorking plans were not definitely outlined but a free exchange of ideas is beneficial Telling each other fac leads to improvement Discussion theories Induces gradualssdevekopme- and it this convention will be no excel tion to the rule Let us hope educa tion agitation Prosperity It is a word to juggle with One of the timings we hear about but do not perience Prosperity An empty sound to toilers In lifes field The storehouses are bursting out with abundance but the more before they will understand that they should have rights as well as Gods chosen and no play upon the credulity or Ignorancedivine rights or fear of future torturewill then suffice and justice church which has always ar Ierared itself against any reform that a measure of relief to the common people has instituted a cru sade headed by several Catholic priests who have been holding series of meetings to denounce ciallstlc teachings The church is tute enough to know that even para tlal industrial reliief for the masse means time for enlightenment hence the desire to perpetuate their bondage Poe Leo has issued an en cyclical against Soetalis n whicji means that no stone Is to be left un turned to stop its advance A few priests more humane than the rest have joined the Socialist says I cannot offon to stop and fight every dog barks at my heels But I fear Hthe present attack upon Socialism by the Catholic Church is an acknowledgement that it fears the dog which barks at its show its antireligious ten dencles and to sustain the noly Path ers declaration that the private property of capitalists must be tected It is Impossible to review these meetings which have taken consider aide space in the Chicago papers but- I wish to mention one remarkable statement made by Father Anton Holler He says It is true that the laboring man of today lives In a more comfortable home eats better food and dresses better than he did several years ago But Socialism has effected none of these reformations They have all been brought about by labor organizations There The truth will slip out We have had It dinned into our ears so long that the church has been the special mes senger of God to protect and betler the condition of the people that it gives us a hard jolt to be told by a priest in plain unmistakable Ian guage that the labor organizations have bettered the conditions of work ing men Do you hear that my good Catholic brothers who have fondly hugged to your breast the delusion that the church has been the orlg inator and preserver of all the good in the world Isnt it about time for you to begin to help the labor organizations which the Rev Father says have helped you instead of expect ing the church to look after you It has failed utterly in the past to mill gate the condition of labor and hope deferred maketh the heart sick The ignorance of the ages is being Illinois sends me the following from the Chicago Record Ilorald of Feb 23rd and asks me to answer the Rev gentleman through the Blade HETTY GREEN SCORED BY REV F HOPKINS Congregational Minister Criticises the Richest Woman In World for Fore closing Mortgage on Fifth Presby terian Church Hetty Green was scored last eon Ing by Rev Frederick E Hopkln from the pulpit of the Pilgram Con gregatlonal Church Harvard avenuo and Slxt fourth street for her action In foreclosing the mortgage on the Fifth Presbyterian Church He choso for the subject of his sermon Is the Church a Fallnre or the Difference Between Hefty Green and Jesus Friends Mary and Martha Poor Hetty Green God bless her dear old heart began the pastor In referring to the mortgage The last time saw her she was limping down Broadway through the dirt to saO car fare and she had a little blac latchel In her hand in which the say she carries the sandwich which constitutes her meal She says th church which does not meet Its obll gatlons Is no good This may be so but it Is not right for her to say it In view of what the church has done for womankind What this richest woman of the world should have done now that she Is tottering on the brink of the grave would have been to telegraph her attorneys in Chicago to cancel tne mortgage on tne church and let toe congregation sing Praise God From Whom All Blessing I Green should remember that Christianity has done more for we men than any other agency In the world What was woman before the era of Christ A slave She washed the feet and hands of her master father brother waited on him fed him and if there was anything left she and the dogs got it Christian ty changed the entire relations of man and woman Who well the friends of Jesus Mary and Martha I He put the stamp of approval upon womanhood until the fairest flown of the world today Is Christian wo manhood The very last person In the world today to say a thing ttagainst the church should be a L man twothirds of the church is composed of women In spite of all forces combined against the Christian church It remains the most succesSful Institution in the world today The text of Rev Hopkins Is the Church a Failure or the Different Between Hetty Green and Jesus Friends Mary and Martha can be answered just one way Yes the church is a failure and but for tho deluded Marys and Marthas it would have to go out of business and It seems that the Fifth Presbyterlaj church has had to do that very thins because It had not enough Mary and Marthas to come to the rescue and because It ran up against a Hettj Green Nine churches In ten would have their mortgages foreclosed If their Marys and Marthas were not kept on the move getting money bj pool and crook to keep the ship of Zion alloat Poor women they t sooner get one leak stopped In this i old craft than a bigger one Is sprung in another place It Is generally the case that the mortgage Is the biggest thing about the church as In this Chicago case- Women have done everything un der the sun to raise money for the church from giving swell dinners to scrubbing the floor of the meetln house and from singing an Oratorio to giving minstrel shows playing pro euchre or dancing the Kan 4rgressive they have been held In line by the Mary and Martha sermon It Is the most valuable stock in rad of the clergy in preaching to the fe male congregations Rev Hopkins describes Hett Green as he last saw her walking or Broadway to save car fare carrying her sandwich It seems hardly creel Ible that a preacher would prevarl cate but I venture the assertion that this man never saw Hetty Green in his life and would not know her from the gatepost If he should meet her If Hetty Green was walking to saw car fare and carrying her sandwich she Is more honorable than the gy who ride on dead head tickets and eat fine steals prepared by men who have roasted themselvc over hot stoves to entertain they preachers If there had been more Marys In the church and fewer Mar thas there would have been fewer feasts and more fasts for the prach ersRev Hopkins says that Hettj Green should have canceled tha church mortgage and let the cojigre gatlon sing Praise God From Whom all Blessings Flow If Hetty Greer had paid the church debt we cant see why the thanks and praise should he rendered to God Hetty Is nc doubt a rich woman hut let us member that the earth is the Lords and the fullness thereof It seems strange that the Lord with His resources should allow one ol his houses to come under the slier las hammer But the Lord knows if Jr the financial and spiritual condition of His Kingdom on earth and If He should begin paying church mortgages He knows It would bankrup the universe so He just lets the preachers and the women attend to the finances and a time of it the have Men have sworn off from ing church beggars so every thing of the feminine gender Is mustered In to raise money for the church Hero is a case recorded in the same paper as Rev Hopkins sermon Hens to Help Pay Church Debt The hens of Little Utica a com intuit about five miles from Bald wlnsvllle N Y are going to worle Sunday this year to pay off a church debt Little Utica has one church and it Is desperately in need of mane It is in a farming community and all the church members are farmers At Its last meeting one of the congregation suggested that each member should contribute all the eggs laid by the hens on Sundays during the next year and give the receipts to the church Everybod agreed and the hens will begin next dont even give the hens a chance to keep the Sabbath day holy Hetty Green says that the church that does not meet Its obligation Is no good It looks like Betty Is right and It never has been prove that the churches that DO meet their obligations are any good from the great cry that Is going up from the preachers Just now for the civil law the women and the law of the nese to help them stay the tide of crime that threatens to submerge our Christian land Rev Hopkins says Hetty Green should remember what Chrlstianitj has done for woman that before Christ she was a slave that washed the feet and hands of master fatfier brother and waited on him fed him and if there was anything left slit and the dogs got it There Is a good deal of that kind of business going on today and Rev Hopkins would not have to go stones throw from his pulpit to find it and the land Is surcharged with Christianity Many women In all sta tlons of life are not only washing the feet hands and clothes of their mas ters but they are often slaves of men whose brutal characters are so black that not even baptismal washing could cleanse them There are mil lions of women In Christendom who earn the money to feed their masters and who watt on them like spaniels and not a few men return all this service with cruelty and brutality Rev Hopkins says before Christi anity after all womans service If there was anything left she and the dogs got It He can find a large class of this kind of women today only the dogs are attended to first Rev Hopkins says that Christianity has alone done more for women than any agency In the world wish he had elucidated some of the things It has done It Is true women fill the pews and play the roles of church cleaners debt lifters fair banquet and jubilee engineers and guardians of the preachers creature comforts but there is nothing particularly en nobling in any of these things To be a silenced subject of the church permitted to do its begging and men ial work which Is the position of wo man today Is not a very elevated one It Is true as this preacher says that twothirds of the church members are women and he might have said the other third are old women of the masculine gender who put the bit the womens mouths and tell them It Is their duty to pull the gospel car The world is sick and tired of hearIng what the church has done for woman It Is time now to talk bout what woman has done for the church The preacher denounces Hetty Green for foreclosing her mortgage on the Fifth Presbyterian Church Would the church have foreclosed a mortgage on Hettys proper ty Though Paul says dare any of you go to law the churches in many courts of our land are trying to wrest by law bequests of deluded people who robbed their own families to will ing their porperty to the Lord ands long as there is a penny in sight the church pursues It and the Heav my legatee never puts In appear Hetty Green forclosed the mortgage on that church If she should apply for membership In Rev Hop kins church or any other church In Christendom she would be more wel come than the Virgin Mary and heron for between the dollar and Deity this Christian country the dollar will win every time Rev Hopkins says the Christian church Is the most successful institution in the world the most successful beggar If churches do not consider It a reli gious duty to pay their honest debts and denounce their creditors for col lecting them it is hard to see how they are a moral force Rev Hopkins said in his sermon Poor Hetty Green God bless her dear old heart To be truthful he should have said Rich Hetty Green He did not mean a word about God blessing her for he denounces her- r merely demanding fair play In a perfectly honorable business transaction This case is a strong object lesson for women The church has so long traded on their sentiment and cre ilultly that when a woman merely demands simple justice she is ana thematized Hetty Green can stand but the question Is can the church stand It JOSEPHINE K HENRY Versailles Ky L J SEVERANCE ON THE SOCIAL EVIL IN THE LOS ANGELES EXPRESS Los Angeles Feb 17 To the Edit orThat prayers and song services are inadlquate for the removel of the social evil should be apparent to any thoughtful mind and yet these moth 22 ods now are being tried for the suppression of an evil as old as human history Just at present we are hav- Ing a moral outburst attended with sentimental but no practical talk in large quantities Committees have addressed tho city council and made requests that were characterized by nothing but emotion and Indefiniteness for while they wanted action taken In relation to the red light dis trict they did not know exactly what or how to do It Right here Is where the trouble al way has come in on the removal of the social evil No one knows what will or can accomplish that and all the acquired wisdom of the ages is Insufficient to formulate an effective remedy There is not a nation on tho globe that does not have uiis evil and none but what always has had It and yet many of these emotional wouldbe regulators of public morals think a city ordinance would sup press It So while waiting for the council to act In a manner not yet formulated or defined praying and services are being tried as a remedy o those given to reflection the fact that cause and effect are inseperable is well known There always Is a cause for everything and this Is suf ficient to establish necessity which has been denied by irrational speakers Necessity is responsible for erything In existence or nothing would exist In mind or matter and to ignore or deny it Is to act In a man ner devoid to selfte or reason Says the irrepressible Kansas woman to the city council hope you will find to a way to suppress this gross Immor er ality but she had no way to sug gest beyond enforcing laws now In existence and which as most people know would simply scatter the evil in and drive the unfortunates into lodg- Ing houses and localities where their presence and influence would intensi to fy their power to produce trouble No other result coulu possibly follow for these women must live and find if shelter somewnere and no door of hope yet exists or ever will where to ill the unfortunates can be taken in and provided for It would be a tremendous undertak- Ing for charitably disposed people to provide a home for the hundreds of women driven by be lives of shame In necessltytifollow hese people with short sight thtrt on right away would do a little more calm and rational thinking they would not be so anxious to disturb I existing conditions until results were to rare certain and apparent from their standpoint The first thing in r be considered is self persevation and everybody wants to know how he can make a living That person who will show these unfortunates how they can exist If they give up imme lately the deplorable business into which they have been driven will do more to solve the question under dls Mission than any other one thing When the opportunity Is open for all women to make a good living in an honorable and agreeable business the social evil will come mighty near re riving its death blow and not tllIa then Socialism which would give to ev rybody the opportunity to make a living by work and the full product d labor is the only thing ever advo cated that will destroy the socials evil and yet socialism is denounced and ridiculed as absurd and impracti cal by most people working for so clal purity No plan even has been iiiggested or considered that equals socialism and until something of that ind is given a trial and the necessi ties of life are thereby assured to every woman the social evell can be ought by law praying and singing and every other conceivable way without sucess Bread and butter will do more to Insure virtue and morality than anything else for it Is the basis of physical life and human happiness ay or think what you will When women can feed and clothe themselves without having to become so clal pariahs they will avoid a life of shame If society really wishes to dispose the social evil so It will never return let it work or socialism or HystemIf a better one can be de visedthat will Insure the protection and nourishment of physical bodies Visionaries and emotional reformers may work on other lines until the lay of doom and they never will neck or destroy this evil Time and experience have so demonstrated and unless they are willing to act on this suggestion feel perfectly safe in naklng the prediction that the scarlet woman will be a member of ciety as long as the human race walls this earth CHANNANG SEVERANCE HURRICANE SWEEPS CITY OF BUDAPEST The following from the New York Sun speaks for Itself Budapest Feb 13A terrific hurricane visited this town today and lid Sunday School Times March 1903 appeared an article written by Samuel Scovcll Jr grandson of Henry Yard Beecher stating that Abraham Lincoln In the year 1862 visited Mr Beecher one night at his study in Brooklyn and that they talked and prayed together several hours the topic on their minds being tho terrible calamities of war The ar tide Is very Interesting and has been extensively copied Rev Dr L Buckley in an editorial in the Christian Advocate February takes Is sue with Mr Scovell as to the cor rectness of the theory which was told to him by his mother after his grand father had died Dr Buckley handles the subject with both glovyi off and proves beyond reasonable doubt that the story Is not founded on fact That President Lincoln never left Washington for New York in 1862 Is shown by the testimony of those who were close to Mr Lincoln In Wash ington as it was not possible for him to male any moves or travel anywhere without their knowing It and they assert that he never went to New York during that year or at any time during his Presidential term Dr Buckley has spoiled a beautiful story but he has performed the task In tit cause of truth Mr Editor These Sunday School stories are all fine so long as no one Is interested enough to move them false that is how Lincoln was made to be pious Beechers grandson is evidently a liar but Beecher had some horse sense one of his friends a member of his church asked him at one time to pray for rain He looked all about and said the wind was In the wrong direction for rain Buckley Is a Meth odist parson and he deserves great credit for settling this matter but the pious frauds will still continue tell the story of Lincoln and Beech wrestling In prayer The most of the pious people evidently think that- a lie well stuck to Is better than the truth told waveringly Ive seen your paper that a Western Fam ily have Inquired for me and also Harriet M Chess am much pleased be missed hut a paper that Jose phine Henry and Harriet Closz writes for doesnt need me much no matter the Editor Is a tramp I have been particularly busy writing letters the voters of New Hampshire The Constitutional Convention held In my state In December passed a bill sub mitting to the people of the State male peoplethe right to say whether or not the right of suffrage should extended to women We are all aware that a man Is a complex mind anyway and will read n lef wnen lIewI1luse for kindling and shaving purposes the printed literature that Is sent to reform him So have written exactly 645 letters up date and am still at it I ask the voters to give the girls a compll mentary vote sometimes a compll mentary vote will fill the bill let us hope it will in this case New Hampshire is a great State Ive ten said If our hills were rolled out we should be as big as TexaS She had the first free public library In the world and keeps It open Sundays She was the first state In New England to give school suffrage to women From the dawn of her history she has loved freedom the stirring part of which her brave sons took In the Revolution proves that and m doing my level best to have her stand forward In the great march of liumanlty and
