Intellectual strides that we are hut while we are tramping all around on other peoples toes with our heads so high we cant see the effects treated lone Individuals rise occasionally in other parts of the world and say something which our selfassumed superiority characterizes as insane ravings Some time ago a high church man of England Rev Freenmntle declared his disbelief In tho Immaculate con ception and resurrection of Jesus lIe was denounced as an Idiot Now comes Canon Page Roberts of St Peters London and denounces the doctrine of lieu He declares that While Science and Philosophy constantly change for the better theology stubbornly clings to same old views from age to age Listen and you may hear the thunder of the canonadlng from Amer lean shqres- Rev Dr Francis Barry InsIICan on Roberts talks like a lunatic Shades of the martyred heretics Is h man living In the 20th century to ire called a lunatic because he does nut believe In Hell Are wo to return to the Inquisition Wo have been told that Ingersoll was a back number that Hell has been ong ex tinguished but hero Is a man who calls a brother minister a lunatic he cause lib dehounces the doctrine of lIcit This Reverend critic further states The church has always believed In an unending hell and It Is not at nil particular to explain away the literal fire This always was and always will be the doctrine of the church Is this expression to represent the boasted progress and enlightened Ideas of America It looks lilwwo need several more Ingersolls to assist with good fire extinguishers before the lames of hell are subdued This declaration that This Is always was and always will be the doctrine of the church ought to have the effect of showing people where they stand on the brink of the burning precipice and turn the tide of Inhuman actions Into the channels of justice But It tines not because If wo sin we have in advocate with the father and can escape the abyss of torture Then n good Methodist undertakes to flay Canon Roberts with ministerial logic He saysN When aVmlnlster begins to lil p ri fr uius from Mrs Henrietta C Ogden tha thenbrlctI n Work waited In the anteroon- while her message women of Dr Eatons hearImamwould be a clerical Othello with tils occupation gone This Is exactly what they are going to do and when they thinly for themselves and realize their silenced and subjugated position with the ecclesiastical halter about their necks The cry goes forth from church that the criminal classes have the upper hand In society and women are called on to help to bring about a better moral condition Is It forgotten that woman Is the original sinner and every crime In the cal endar is laid at her door One has not to read very far In the Bible to find that out but a mystery is con jnected with this whole thing Though woman brought sin into the world she has been cute enough to dump ninetenths of It off on man and he Is paying the penalty In prison and on the scaffold while woman who is re sponslhle for nil sin and crime tually goes scot free and the preach ers call on her to keep reform etao ers call on her to help reform or pun dlplomacInplomacy in all lines look like 30 cents Yet this feminine diplomat must not address a body of men In an of ficial capacity- It toes seem strange that when morality Is at low ebb that the Heathen dunce should be cited as an exemplar and woman who brought sin into the world and who Is un worthy to address a body of men In an official capacity should be called In to help church elevate the morals of society t iti I Versailles Kyi preach against hell It is a sign he Is going to hell and knows it The same reasoning might be ap plied this way When a man does not preach against hell It Is a sign he Is going there but dont know it Behold on what a slender thread hangs all eternal things What a small thing may consign one to eter nal burning This Christian logician also Informs us that The doctrine of hell Is not preached nearly as much as It should be and conversions are falling off in the same ratio The doctrines that souls are annihilated at death or subjected to discipline and flpally restored to favor with God are mischievous errors and without foundation In the word of God How these men representing the meek and lowly Jesus regret that hell cannot he made still hotter so that there might be weeping and rail- Ing and gnashing of teeth In fearful anticipation before death Still another confirms the above Rev Dr A D Traveller secretary of City Mission says Put me down as believing in a straight Methodist hell believe the punishments of hell will be unending and hopeless Such ex preslons as these ministers have made about the old theology of hell ought to horrify any thinking person Science has long since demonstrated that the hell of the Bible Is an absolute Impossibility Human decrees have rellgated its monstrous teach ing to the past Years ago I reada symposium by several ministers on this subject and but one D L Moody clung to the old idea and I had thougtht that Moody and Spurgeon werethe only two ministers who lIterathellldurlugboth dead foolishly believed we would said Religion especially evangelical rd liglon Is today of very low vitality The attendance at church service Is shamefully small We are attacked by secular writers They tell us that the ministry Is deteriorating that hiirclieflhavef lost their influence schools and that education to the alone can encompass all the acttyiUes of life They say that the churches spend more fop supertlulties of life than for gospe l point with scorn t a and other cheapeningmethods of obtaining money to gospel They condemn its for sending missionaries abroad when our people are spiritual ly starving at home but however true these accusations may be in part they are overdrawn They must be taken with an allowance Yet a thoughtful man will not Ignore them He must admit that there Is a crisis In American religious life As has been said we live for money by day and pleasure by night have no fear In saying that at the present rate at which we are living in fifty years we will have no Sabbath Christians get mad when we point to the fact that their religion Is de dining So it is wholesome to print the statistics and declarations of their own prominent clergy The Output of Hell Jesuit Priest Tom In our bodies He further de no Catholic could bo a AmerlIcanconstruction you put on the word patriotism If any Catholic should cling to you teaching that the Pope null the church Is above and Inde awakening from their drunken dream of faith and many of them entering the ranks of Socialism and there stand amused at your vapid t r last statistics show a Cath chic population of about 12000000 a largo percentage of which are counted two or three times and another large percentage never enter a church Three tines as many Catholics have immigrated to this country as now compose Its church been keeping a flagon with Mademoiselle for loz who resolved to have revenge up on him when he wearied of her and tried to cast her away A special dispatch says Mlle Borloz is of Swiss origin and was formerly a Protestant Five Cathyolic with 1ersister who a French Marquis Soon after that Mlle Borloz met Abbe Jaquetln who it is said promised her that ho would abandon tho ecclesiastical calling and marry her- Whentho priest was removed from Vichy he continued to correspond with the girl and it appears that she was with him at the funeral and reminded him of his promise Then she followed him to the railway sta Lion and as he seemed desirous of snaking her oft she fired at him striking him each time but not kill Ing him M Jaquetln refuses to take any proceeding against the young woman WilD has been sent to prison to await her trial Die In the Belfry The other tragedy of a similar char acter took place near Toulouse Some time ago the priest Vales a handsome man was appointed cure of the little village of Carbouse Ho lived with two old maiden aunts and his grandmother One morning It was discovered that the young priest and a girl of 18 had disappeared Everywhere vain search was made rItflr foodthe belfry here he body of the priest by the side of that of the girl A revolver lay between them Ical evidence proved that the priest had shot the girl and then committed suicide A letter was found In the priests pocket stating that he had mistaken his vocation lIe preferred death to sullying the purity of the girl he loved but he could not brook the thought that she should ever belong to another- It is safe to say that there is not a priest In America but has had just such guilty experiences According to ExMonk Sullivan who lectured recently in Cincinnati and who backed up hs exposures by books of authority from which he read all lay priests are permitted coition four times a monthfor all over this they have to confess In reality then they are unlimited What so easy cheap and reminiscent as to confess their Intrigues and victories over women to each other If they all got plugged with bullets who seduce girls would bo a host of ventilated priests everywhere German Orthodox Press Mad at the Kaiser A dispatch from Berlin states that the Christian people of Germany are up In arms against the Emperor for attending the lecture of the noted rtssyriologlst Prof Delltzschs on the higher criticism entitled Babel and Bible In which tho Professor up sets Inspiration theories declaring that Babylon had a Decalogue cen turies before Israel And to make matters worse the Emperor presented the Empress to the lecturer The dispatch says The declaration of tlno lecturer that there Is no greater mistake of tho human mind than to hold that the Bible Is tho personal revelation of God and the countenance which the Kaiser appears to give to the professors destruction of other ortho sox beliefs have caused consterna lion The lecturer stated that the Ten Commandments were laws In Babylon long before Judaism was thought of and that they have been embellished by word of mouth In tho course of ages This theory has still more as tounded orthodox Germany and the conservative press Is loud In Its censures This is a most important Incident and of great interest to Rational ists showing plainly the progress of Freethought We all know that Emperor William despises Rationalismthat time end again ho lies addressed his soldiers and urged them to hold firm to the Christian faiththat ho has tine and again sought to weld more closely the links of church and statethat ho well knows that tho crown Is tho merest bauble without tho support of f the cross Then why should ho pretend al at once to be in favor of free speed and why should be attend tho lectur of a noted Atheist I will tell you Freethought has grown to such pn portions in Germany that It has b e come an element to be dealt with Tho censored press keeps the worl Ignorant of its progress But It well known that notwlthstandln Leze Majeste Rationalism now lead education In Germany and when till bigot Emperor the Godcrowned Kin g lends his to a Rationalist as elee ment has become a party to be con sldcrcd and recognized Suppose we had 44 Socialist repr- sentatives In the Congress of tin United Statesall Freethinkers working and pulling togetherImag Ine what an uproar would be raise In granting certain unconstltutiona we have not one Free thought has not a single representa live having the manhood to Introduce a bill for It Why should Freethinkers be sue cowards in this country when Fre in com poslltlcal policy to give It prominent recognition There has nothing com to my observation in late years which so greatly marks tho advance of Freethought as this instance the Emperor William recognizing Its might and the outcry of the re llglous press of Germany against him Kings never toady to their enemies until they have to Attention Los Angelese Liberal Club Tho next general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church which will bo attended by delegates front all over tho world to the number of bishops and clergy will meet at Los Angeles In 1904 This decision was made by the Book Committee in New York last Monday The Meth odists of Los Angeles guaranteed 000 for the success of the meeting When we observe the big moguls of Methodism to the number of travelling in palace cars and on first class steamships to a remote city from all parts of the world the press noting every arrival and every word of their proceedings It makes the Congresses of the American Secular Union and the National Liberal Party which didnt make as much noise as a borhorygml in a thunderstorm look as sick and thin as a starved cat But there Is this consolation they have to expend an Incalculable amount of energy praying pulpit pounding lying and fabulous treas tires to keep down a few Infidels and then they dont keep them down The same energy and money has to be doubled every year and stilt they slide back They spent 200000000 In the United States last year and only added 400000 to their membership which ratio of increase is only half the ratio of increase of tho general population Tho cost pcjr head was But deducting from the 400000kthe mimr her of children who are born into the church and who come Into the fold like cnlckens to cheat Just by calling and counting only the CON VERTSthe actual result of church propaganda and a conservative esti mate would leave not over 100000 the cost of which Increase would be per head- I think It would be safe to figure the actual converts at no more than 10000 which would make the cost of each 2G000 per head Thousands of these joiners are counted two and three times a year as they move from town to town and parish to parish and leave one church for another If Rationalists spent 260000000 a year for five yearsif they spent 1000000 a year for five years the Christian superstition would dwindle to the ranks of the Salvation Army We will always have It because we wii always have Ignorance and In tolerance There is this consolation for Rationalistswe propagate by virtue of the exercise of Reason hu manity and justice Christianity prop agates by imposing upon the helpless mind of the child lying to it all its life am spending 260000000 a year In keeping It from detecting tho guilt of Its mental enslavers How many converts would Chris tlanty make In a year If it was com pellet to stand upon its Intellectual merits as Rationalism does Why if you would take that 2COOvJ000 away front it for just one year all these sleek wellfed preachers and even the Bishops themselves like impudent kids would make ugly faces and stick out their tongues at It then turn and paddle their be hinds in contempt of It Money Is what makes the parson as well as the mare trot C Missionary Misery At a recent meeting in Cincinnati of the Christian Foreign Missionary Society Dr McLean Its President opened his talk with the statement that a reliable religious journal had hunted up tho Interesting fact that it takes 28 Presbyterians 30 Christians 31 LmneransK31 Methodists 31 Epis copalians and Congregationalists ono year to bring just one soul into the church The Chapel was crowded with min- Isters of all denominations A reporter present said that tho statement caused a perceptibly uncomfort able movement front the auditors Let us inquire into cause said Dr McLean In the early days thief was not so for on the Day of Pentecost 3000 were converted Fifty years ago revivals everywhere resulted in large increase of converts often into tho hundreds and even thousands The situation of today Is deplorable Not withstanding the assistance given by the press and the fact that the ma chinery of the church is almost per feet there Is a lack of results The Doctor might have added not sallaried amount saved by the evasion of to atlon and the extra tip from mar- rlages anti the appropriation and hell e form the Almighty himself The amusing part of all this Is tha the clergy confess to tho truth who they come together but Ho to tin world They raise a wail of woe beforsgross of the church Their own statistics and their ow n i secret confessions would indicate the they are hoeing a stumpy old row 0Petersons Rod I clip from The Examiner Col R pubeing thereclplent walkinicut a short time since from the grave of Thomas purchased by tho hundret for a trifle Writs to Walter Collins Secretary Los Angeles Calif HETTY GREEN AFTER THE PRESBYTERIANS Hetty Green of Now York the greatest business woman of America and tho richest owns a mortgage ol 13000 on the Fifth Presbyterian church of Chicago and as Its trustees plyinsg ed the foreclosure of the mortgage It seems as though the trustees have thought because Hetty is rich she ought to make a donation of the amount to them But Hetty is some what of a Freethinker and above all she is an honest business woman and demands that people she docs business with bo honest and act hon orably In an Interview with Mrs Green she briefly and curtly presses her views on her relations with church trustees Its beyond me these church feuds The religion that cant meet Its honest obligations in this world Is no good Those churches out in Chicago have been mixed up for tho past five years each trying to get possession of the property on which hold a mortgage have given them three years to settle up their differ ences and they have not none so If they wanted me to give them some thing it would be different but as an officer of the courts I Tim pelled to see this thing through The mortgage was secured from my husband in his declining years and somebody nas got to pay ItI dont care whether It is paid by the Methodists or by the Pesbyterians have Instructed my attorneys to advertise tho church for sale under a mortgage foreclosure and take what they can get for it Between the Predestinationists and Sanctlficatlonlsts Hetty seems to be having a hell of a time This reminds me of the experience of a friend of mine a prominent bust ness man who Is In tho church Fur niture business When he started In the business he was a good Meth odist one of the rousing roaring whoop ia kind He went to prayer and class meetings and got glory in his soul After a number of years experience with church trustees and congregations his zeal began to sins mer and now he says that any man who has business dealings for any length of time with church trustees and dont lose faith in Christianity and become an Infidel hasnt the sense he was born withithey want something for nothing and then a big donation thrown in They dillydally about payingwont keep a business agreement and have no business conscience whatever and dont atvT attrFht iiTPyprtcntinn and worst of all they think anything not strictly fair shoved he condoned and overlooked just because they are good church people This is the tes timony of an honest business man after years of business experience with church trustees He and Hetty ought to get together and swap notes forgot to mention that this gentleman now reads the Blade The National Liberal Party Is taking a stride forward New will be Impossible to have my and be honest with myself In the discussion of this subject without Indulging In sonic expressions that may seem a little caustic I have no word of censure for any being be cause I believe that the life of every person Is the result of heredity birth and environment If you will care fully study the history of religion especially the history of the Christian religion you will be compelled to admit that the God of the Bible has either commanded the commission of almost every crime or has silently acquiesced In It You must admit that tho disciples of any religion are justified in a belief that It Is not wrong for them to do and sanction the things commanded and sanctioned by their God I sincerely believe that every Intelligent unprejudiced person who reads and studies the Bible carefully must Inevitably conclude that a devotee of the of the Bible can find a Biblical cuse for almost every Indiscretion for almost every misdemeanor and crime known to man and womankind Realizing as we do that for thousands of years the human mind has been steeped In a seething sesspool of Biblical filth Immorality cruelty Injustice Inhumanity and fiend- Ish persecution in
