Liberal Party at Lexington Ky Jan uary 24th 1903 x This think a favorable oppor tunity for Introducing sonic economic agitation hi this state Most Kentucky people read of So cialism and Socialistic agitation without regarding them as matters affect log Kentucky whatever They look up on this question as something belong ing to communities far off As some thing affecting cities and centers o commerce unconscious that what af fects them affects the remotest er of the soilunconscious that th Blue Grass Region affords some of the inert Illustrations of these great questions now agitating the masses In the great manufacturing and min lug centers For a little while let us shift the scene of agitation from the roaring grimy factory in the tenement tract of the city to the fields of Ken tucky which still retain the green tint of summer and which await the first kisses of the journeying sun to thrill them with opening buds blos coming fruits golden dandelions and fair daffodils- It Is u big jump but I am going to show you that the curse of monopoly rests upon these quiet fields as well as upon the city slum am going to make It so plain to Mr Moore that If he cannot see It he has either a cataract over each eye or a chloroformed conscience am going out to Dog Kennel and stand upon his native heath and take my observations- am going to show that the Oil Stocks and Copper represented out there have become such common names that the neighborhood is im pregnated with their association and that they are fast displacing the which usetfto flourish there If wanted to convert some par ticular friend to Socialism there Is not a spot on earth from which would choose to take my observations in preference to Dog Fennel One of the disappointments In traveling through Blue Grass if the fact that the line Old Kentucky Homes mean the OLD ones which you read and sing about are mostly myths they aint thar Once In a good long while you see one of them but nearly all the pro tentlous homes are those recently built or remodelled by some city baron mining speculator oil king or distiller it Is only when you go to a stock farm that you observe any provements worth noting Iho farmers of the Blue Grass havo all moved to town and retired rode around Dog Fennel for two days with Mr Moore It Is n beautiful fertile spot fairly well piked anti fenced Woo drove to the Harkness farm said to he the tlnest farm In tit world A high stone wall English style lined the pike In front of the farm for some distance A porters Lodgea tine limestone residence of live or six rooms stood within near the great Iron gate which open ell lido the road which led to the mansion a mile away The object of this costly residence Is to house a man cold family whose only duties are to attend to the gate and see that no tramp or suspicious people are admitted to the premises It was the first Unit in my life that had to pass a locked gate an iron one at that anti submit to personal Inspec thou and inquiry before was per milted to approach an American farm winding drive of crush ed limestone led through Held woodland up to mansion Thi mansion an Old Kentucky Hone remodeled Its former possessor had moved to town and RETIRED horse stable or barn as you choose to call it about the length of a city square finished on the inside In lard oiled wood and a palace in Itself costing was told 125000 stood a short distance from the man skin Many other buildings less pre tenUous stood about but all were hue The fences through the Holds were all of hoard and whitewashed making a pretty contrast with the green of the land All the larger trees In thin woodlands wero protect ed by lightning rods When you entered or drove Into this stable your torso and buggy pulsed over a flue matting carpet which was spread In the great door way calJOleliIhere Moors of tho tenements Into which have enterou When looked upon tho blanketed well fed fiery eyed steeds holding their heads high in lofty scorn even of myself thought of shivering starving hu man wretches have seen living In the cellars of tho great city When f 1 breathed the fresh pure air of that stable thought of the babies inhal ing the sickening atmosphere of the filthy alleys and crowded tenements When saw those proud horses gaz ing through fine windows over green fields where far woodlands lay dreaming under sleepy blue skies I thought of the poor shop girl at the close of her days labor stepping Into a dark hole of a doorway feeling her way along a dingy passage to a dingier little room with one small window looking out over a filthy court filled with garbage barrels and outhouses When saw the many great brood mares serenely grazing In the rich shade by the side of their young high bred foals thought of the sad eyes of the mothers havo seen as they looked Into tho cradle and longed for the shade and sunshine and the breath of clover to bring back to health tho dying mite of humanity which lay moaning therein We leran by contrast Many good people are not alive to human suffer ing because they see but little of It and that In a light form Others see so much that they become cal lous to It and heed it not Somehow it has been my lot In life snttertngfgrow used to it skyeit sake me Jealous or curious of the rich and prosperous I simply ask and want that all alike have the senile to health sunlight fresh air education ease and all those fundamental necessities which lessen crime and Improve the race This man Harkness owner of this finest farm the world Is a Standard Oil King living In New York He visits this farm In May and Junebringing his family and other swell Eastern people with him He is a horse fancier and the sole use and object of this great estate is grati fication of tills fancy and of having a country residence for a month or two In the year Now Harkness is a rich man He Is not getting poorer like the Ken husky farmers The Standard Company on a capital of 100000000 In thin last six years has declared dividends to the amount of iol000 000 Harkness who owns a big corner of Its stock comes down into Kentucky anti sots up in such style that till old Kentucky aristocrats are simply not In It He houses his horses better than many of the bluest blooded natives house their wives and children Does Harkness earn the money by which he makes this grand display How comes ho by it then By his dividends on Standard 011 stock How much are these dividends 300000000 In six yeas on a cup Itall ell stock of 100000000 Is oil declining or advancing hue just advanced three cents on the gallon- If Harkness does not who then earns these mammoth dividends The man who drill for oil andwork work In the refineries Do they own Blue Grass farms No A lot of thorn dont even own their own hides Havo their sick children fresh air and sunshine llko Harknoss colts No They breathe the stilling air of a crowded oneroom shanty At an oil refiners wages how long would It take him by keeping his family on tho point of starvation all tho time to save enough money to buy Just one of HarknoHs yearlings About a thousand years What do we observe In this com parison Abnormal wealth and abnormal pov Continued from Missouri Col Crisp of Kansas City has produced a bill Into the Missouri Legislature providing for Jim Crow cars on all railroads In that State Tine colored people are up In arms against this bill and prayer meetings are being held in every hamlet and town in tho State to plead with the Lord to bring this bill to defeat Think of it with all the business tine Lord of Heaven and earth has on No wonder Ho repented that He had made man We should not wonder If He had repented numbers of times bringing such a bothersome nagging set into the world to say nothing of women with all their wants and com a woman friend who wanted to attend a swell wedding and her lips were all swoolen up with fever blisters and she told me that she took those fever blisters to the Lord In prayer and lie took them all off and she got to tho wedding in fine style A Kentucky girl given to says she fell from her horse and broke her leg in two places and that she took that broken leg to the Lord in prayer and in one hour the broken bones were knitted together and her limit was as well and sound as ever When Fitzsimmons tought Corbett the press announced that Mrs Fltz slmmons took the fight to the Lord in prayer praying earnestly that her husband would win the fight and come out champion of the prize ring and he did We are told that faith can remove mountains It never has removed them but perhaps the Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live and Leviticus XX says A man or wo man that hath a familiar spirit or that is a wizard shall surely be put to iloath they shall stone them with stones their blood some friends of the paper are endeavoring to organize a stock company for the purpose of placing It on a sound financial basis I shall give a brief review of how the move ment started On Sunday afternoon Mr Moore was booked for an address beforeJthe Second Congress of the National Liberal Party subject not announced Mr Moore is by this time on the At lantic Ocean and cant talk back The word address was a misnomer he talked on any and every subject and finally wanted to know if them friends of the Blade will give It their moral and financial support while he was looking for the spot where Abrahl1mtentertainedKentucky rye Why dont you form a stock Com pany came a voice from the right and as the audience glanced around It noticed Mr T J Wyscarver on the Hoar Mr Morgan Wamsley was next to rise with the statement put me down for a hundred dollars The Chair thereupon announced that all those Interested in the finan cial success of the Blade and the pro posed formation of a stock company were requested to remain after the afternoon session of the National Lib er1arlY had a edIIle r dyearver was ult niUtr 11 motion chosenSecretl1lY t were made and the enthusiasm was more demonstrative when a number walked up tb the Secretarys desk and liberally subscribed for the pro posed stock It was decided to capitalize the Blue Grass Blade Into a company with 5000 capital and divide the shares all the shares will be subscribed for before Mr Moore returns from Pal estlne Truly a better welcome could not be accorded him than such Infor mation It is the intention of the committee to call in 25 per cent of the subscription at the time of delivery of the stock and 25 per cent In three six and nine months respec ttely This method will enable a good many to tube a number of shares without being obliged to pay for them In one sum Those desiring to sub scribe are requested to communicate with any of the Committee or the office of the Blue Grass Blade Will tho stock be a paying Invest meat Yes Put 5000 behind the Blade divided among a large number of stockholders and It will be able to declare a per cent dividend the very first year In less than a years time It will have at least 5000 paying subscribers at a dollar a year With an income of 5000 it can easily set aside 300 for dividends And the advertisements will increase and bring better prices The stockholders will elect their our pious country A farmer of Appleton Wis had a cow pastured In a lot which divined the N W right of way A brnd of laborers who ate their ner nearby threw the cow some rem mats of mouldy bread whereupon the brute was afflicted with terrible pains in the Internal regions and scon died in great agony Suit was brought by the farmer and after a long legal investigation and a chemical analysts of the bread eaten by the cow it was decided that the death of the boast was due to poisoning from eating moldy bread and the Railway Com zany has in accordance with the de Aston remitted 14000 as compensa tion for loss of the cow This shows that man possesses greater physical endurance than the- o called brute creation It shows that man following the inflexible Christian methods for centuries has become inured to its hardships grown accustomed to Its privations For long years the workers it the human family have been poisoning their bodies by accepting the moldy Tread crumbs that have been flung to them from the rich mans tables and the poisonous substances assim ilated seem only to Increase tile ca pacity for greater endurance Unfortunately results of physical neglect or abuse are visited upon posterity A man may be addicted to drink or other deadly drugs for years befcre serious effects are noticable and while the same habit may not be traced to descendants there are con stitutional disabilities which cannot be overlooked and of which we should take stock in searching for census disease Is it not a travesty upon our sys tem when a piece of daily bread eaten by laborers should kill a beast of the field It it not a terrible arraignment of Chrlstion methods when the produc ers of Wealth must accept poisonous foods wlrtch not only lowers their own vitality but nothing in particular to sr I have been in doubt When In iloubt dont so I didnt But now I have a favor to ask not for myself alone but for all those who desIre to improve the garden of the mind to cast out the noxious weeds and with tender loving IJarts plant the flowers of the soul Many iconoclasts with cutting sarcasm can mow thistles and thorns of superstition from the boundless fields of tho mind with a mocking laugh cnn shatter tho walls of prejudice that surround some beautiful brain clogged with orthodoxys loathsor growth and with a hurricane of sat- Ire can root out the mosscover brambles of Christianity tho boggi lice of the mind But who is goIng to plant the violets nod the monots the lilacs and the oaks Who will sow the virtues in this new and virgin soil I do not ask to criticise nor thlnl mo guilty of scorn A Searcher for the Truth In the early morn of youth I ask for guidance and advice from a manly mnn who has trod the rugged path of an active useful life About the First of May I will start for Tlmbo Arkansas to talu a cabin near Bro Farris I am going to take my books a heart ycarnli for the truth and n brain thirsty knowledge and there in the InspirIng scenery of the Ozarks prepare to be come a lowly volunteer In the Light Brigade of tho Army of Progress Cant you give me some advice as to study and books I ask not only for myself as said but for all those who wish tc hasten the dawn of that beautiful da when true Brotherhood of Man shaH hold sway Could you not write an article for tho Blade giving your own experience and using such parts of this letter as would give your reasons for speaking about yourself But please dont give my name I do not ask this because of fear for all m acquaintances know that am an In ttdol and never had any troubl because of such unbelief but cause of the promptings of modest and the desire to avoid the unsough for and undesired attentions and ters of the Blade readers who nre long on gab and short on know edge taffy friends and caustic eni mles Perhaps my plans may seem somewhat lightly colored to you but trust that they will not while person not In sympathy may he prone to taunt and jeer at the presumption and aircastles of an unknown youth But when the sapling of youth has 1 grown into the oak of manhood trust I can bo of use to you in the grand cause you represent Then like a general in the field theres peace when the children of freedom heap the rocks of joy oer toe graves of the martyrs they love Trusting and hoping that you wll write such an article am Your young and sincere admirer REPLY Cincinnati 0 Feb 12 303 My dear young DrotherIYou ask Who violets c Whats the matter with yourself Judging by your writing rhotorlc and sentiment see no drance to your assumption of that task t admit and well recognize the fact that the violets should be planted af tel the thicket is cleared But wood choppers seldom make good landscape gardeners You must admit that the wood chopper and log roller and rail mauler and sprout grubber and brushburner must come first and are the most Important Inc tors in converting a wilderness to a flower garden Their hardships and sacrifices however are little appreciated and soon forgotten by those who come along after them planting posies Now you are going down into the Ozarks where John D Farris lives and who Is a wholesouled fellow You are going to take a claim and abide in a log cabIna very healthy kind of a house I have slept in the garret of one with only the clap boards between me and the gemmed illskies and Ive tossed the snow off my in the mornings and I know all about that kind of life It is a rough country The trees grow big The thickets are thick The wildgrape vines are hanging on to every bough You will have a lot of felling and log rolling and burning and grub bing and railmauling to do if you get a living out of that claim And you will get kicked by mules and run over and knocked down and your thumbs mashed a dozen times a year Then youll begin to realize the dif ference between all this and planting violets in ground already prepared for you get right down among the thistles thorns and noxious weeds you too will grow cuttingly sarcastic When the oxteam runs off there will proceed a hurricane of satire from your lips which will wake John D Farris out of his and make him snooze on his porch wonder what the hs the matter at the new ranch After you Iover fIt have proceeded this far in your new experience you will not wonder nt neither will you deplore the cllttlng sarcasm of those who plunge bold into wilderness of superstition and level and clear up A man puts on old clothes when he goes to fell trees Manners tom apparel and speech are all nnt ural associations of the emllo ment- he pursues If you would take awar the Illfitting clothes the uncouth np pearance and the cutting sarcasm of Lincoln he wouldnt be Lincoln The most of worth Burns left to the world was not his posies speech but the wedge and maul wit which he split error and superstition Take these from him and there woull1 be no Burns If you wiuld take away the cut ting sarcasm of Bostons pictures wouldnt bo Heston niche these illustrations for reason that so many Liberals Ill yourself are shocked when others call a spade a spade They do not recognize the right of the employment even of ridicule in attacking the most monstrous of errors and a system uf mental debauchery which lobs not Itself hesitate to employ the most vicious and cunning arts of torture to uphold that systema system which Is the enemy of free speech and free government and which aims at the death of both In this countrya sj s tern which is making only a show of peacewhIch Is peaceful only cause It does not feel strong enougit to be tyrannical We have not yet arrived at that point of civilization wnen there is more clearing to be donewhen ax and maul should be laid away VIolets lilacs and forgetmenots are good but they wont uproot old stumps anu thorntrees Dynamite is better The timber around Timbo is heat r and the undergrowth thick en you et to work clearing them out y ou will not be choice In your languag when a sapling flies back and kneel you down When you sink your into the butt of a gum tree you w hit hard and let the chips fall they may And finally when after years of toll and daily explosions sarcasm and hurricanes of satire you have gotten your claim In good state of cultivation for the growth of vl lets some sleek Christian will come along and cheat you out of it if yc dont watch out You ask for my advise and now give It Never throw away your maul Plant violets out In the yam and lilacs by the window but kee your old maul handy where you can always grab it And I say to you and to all yoiui not fear Do not be a halfwa Liberalist If you believe half their creed if you are humble and exhibit fear of them Christians despise yet If you stand up for your convictions if you deny outright their errors the respect you and secretly they boa up to you Be a leader or not at all The world judges by generals nol by privates To principles apply the maul T persons bestow the violets line the general tone of your ter It exhibits youth and Inexpi rlence but it is a better letter than could have written at your age think I read between Its lines the promise of a bright future expect to hear of you in the years to come and that you are filling my place o that of some other who has grown weary with the burdens of years Do not walt however for the sapling to become the oak Every young eral should learn to speak and write These are easy acquirements li youth but difficult as the years pas by Speak on every occasion am write something dally Write you l own thoughts as simply as you can Use words of one syllable in pref erenco to words of two or more Dont try to suit any one but yourself If you do you cant express you best thoughts Dont stop to thlnl or care what estimate any one else is going to place upon your compo sition Please yourself and be nat ural and simple in subject WrIting is also a trick simply practice But If you would be Instructive you must l acquire knowledge You must see hlngs you must see everything An oak leaf is nothing to you If you dont know difference in form and color of the leaves of all the oak family the white oak black oak red oak burr gale jack oak live oak chestnut and hlnkapin There was not a leaf in he forest of tree or scrub or plant was not familiar with the same with vine and flower If you would be a writer you must see things In nature tad from this knowledge you draw your illustrations and embellishments jf speech When was a boy I despised my middle name and wouldnt tell what he B stood for devoted a whole summer and parts of other summers gathering and studying Insects The boys laughed and said I was bug- house and so put Bag for the in my name Well wish had that collections of bugs now many which were far more brilliant and attractive than most of those boys now are who aughcd at rat bugs of far better habits of Industry sobriety charac tel common sense and government discovered this while studying sect life and give it as another ustration of the value of seeing things There is nothing so mon in nature but a little study will unfold a world of beauty and enlight whenever occasion permits Trite dally and when amid that there Is no patriotism or sentiment any more In war The man who goes out to battle Imagining that he is fighting for his country is a consummate and fool War of today Is nothing but com morcial this trouble that Wall Street gamb leIs like Jim Keene Harkness and Haggin should own big Kentuck farms and just for pastime breed race horses and house them in pal aces and feed them on the choices of the land while homeless genius wonders starving while honest labor grovels for the privilege of employment while women and children cry for bread and shiver with cold and highminded girls are
