HENRY Versailles Ky tT BLUE GRASS BLADE 1 f DOES WEALTH MAKE HAPPINESS While I never was rich as compar ed with the rich people of these days none of my brothers lived longer than years and my father was worth about 100000 and my parents were very Indulgent to me I was never Im moral and believe I got more happi ness out of money than those gener ally do who have It On the other hand while I have nev r or been very poor am and for years r have been far from rich and not as a consequence of extravagance or tr Idleness In any of my family or my selfkspent the several years that preached among the poorest people I ever sawtho mountaineers of Ken tucky I have seen a good deal of what we call rich society In Kentucky f none of whom of course are rich at all compared with the rich people of the East I mean by rich In Kent tucky people who are worth from one hundred thousand to 250000 was sixtyfive years old a few days since I am in extraordinarily can judge phy agtcaadlyealAUoutfroy mental health of course I cannot judge and about It k there seems to be a broad difference of opinion among others When was young I was very pop ular Now I hardly know whether to say I am popular or the reverse as people generally understand word ItnpPYroGive me neither poverty nor riches and of the story of Diogenes asking f Alexander to get out of his sunlight t I have thought much of Girard and t Tolstoi and Carnegie three Infidels who gave away millions of money to ff make others happy evidently thinking that it would make them happy to do r isoand I suppose this was the great est pride and happiness of their lives Would I take the millions of dollars if some multimillionaire would offer It to me think I would and this is what suppose 999 honest men out of 1000 would answer to that ques tion But believe would do It hop ing to do good with it though could not be certain that would do good C with it or even try to do good with It even If I took it with that expectation If though had to live with my millions as the ordinary millionaire lives I hardly think that I would ex change my present conuitlon for his It has not been my experience that rich men and women were happy consequence of their wealth I be lieve there is fmy as much unhappi ness among the rich in proportion to number as there is among the poor In cases of suicide in consequence of financial matters thing that while many of them are in conse quence of loss or fear of loss more lu thIII t JHullw1o t had an abundance upon which to live It now seems to me that If I were rich I would take great pride and pleasure in living just as as I now do though I would almost cer tainly be charged with an affectation of eccentricity or of humility or of penuriousness in case I was not very generous In this way I Imagine that all rich people feel that their motives are criticised and that they are apt to be doubtful of the friendship of any body because they know that un principled and designing men are apt to make friends of rich men while the proper kind of men may not be as kind to rich men as they would otherwise be because they are afraid of being suspected of hypocrisy There are some few Instances of peoplea majority of them menwho were friends to me as long as had money but who care little about me now But as it is now never for an instant suspect the genuineness of any mans or womans pretense who pretends to be a friend to me now because I cannot conceive of any mer cenary or selfish motive that any man woman or child could have In profess ing to be a friend to me now So that just any little word or deed of anyone that indicates friendship to me now is enjoyed by me as an evidence of real friendship for can conceive of no other motive than a genuine one that such a person might have No rich person can enjoy this as surance of the unselfishness of his friendsI not know of any mistake In life that think is making more un happiness than the idea that riches make happiness It not only keeps people continually straining to be rich but makes them try to appear richer than they really are so as to get the admiration of others and the result Is that they live in a style that is more expensive that they can afford and are always oppressed with debt is more suffering from debt tlThere than there is from a want of the necessaries of life If all people would live within their means though to do so would expose their poverty it would remove much of the unhappiness of life Fine things that are not paid for are of little pleasure to those who have them No good and sensible people have any less regard for people because they are poor unless their poverty is the result of some wrong doing and good people who have money are more Inclined to help poor people who act like poor people than they are to help poor people who act like rich people I think that all people should try to make money more than is neces sary for their own wants not In order that they may live as rich people gen erally do but that they may use It to do good While personally my family and- I live plainly I believe that we long to a very large class of farmers who are commonly supposed to live quite comfortably but who would be actually much happier if they would sell enough of what they have to free them Irom dept instead of striving t for all their lives to get out of debt and still hold what they have or ap pear to have and then live very much are not many people who are unhappy if they are out of debt and are all the time honestly employed- see ninny rich people men and women who seem to be unhappy Just for the want of somcuiing to do They have not the moral courage to use some of their superfluous money to help others and to occupy their time in profitable labor as poor peole have to do and it is pitiable to wit ness the unreasonable and unsatisfactory methods that these people use in trying to entertain themselves The poor man who owes nothing and Is able to engage his mind and healthfully exercise his body In honest labor that barely buys comfortable food and raiment for himself and for any who may justly depend upon him has far more reason to sympathize with the unoccupied rich man or the man who is simply hoarding money that he does not need than such rich men have to sympathize with such a poor man- I was once a haute clerk and a man came In to make a deposit who at the time had 75000 to his credit He said was a much happier man when I was a blacksmith making horseshoes than am now lIe left his family rich have watched their career and believe they would have been happier and he too If he had never attained any more than the fortune of the ordinary horse shoeing blacksmith remember that as a rich young man with no responsibility upon me used to envy the freedom from care that my fathers Negro slaves seemed to have as they went laughing and singing and whistling out to the fields to plow I have seen many fearful wrecks of the lives of men who start ed life about the same time that I did as rich young men But I hardly ever saw a young man start life as a poor man and who neuner used liquor nor tobacco whose life has been a fail ureGeorge W Bain now of Lexintgton known as a temperance orator from Boston to San Francisco now living in Lexington in comfort und honored as a benefactor of his race started so poor and obscure in my neighborhood about the same time that did that never heard of him until he be came famous and asked him where he was born and he said about five miles from where was and that he remembered my parents and me well when he was a little fellow and now in my prisonwritten book there are no pages of which am prouder thrn of those at Col Bain the most thrilling orator that Kentucky ever produced in all her cohorts of orators en couraging me when was a peniten tlary convict Young men am growing old and my career must soon he ended but want to tell you something that lope some thousands of you will recollect and repeat when am dead It is this There never was a man In America rich enough to afford to pay a nickel for liquor or tobacco and of course np poor man can afford to do It If even onhout of ten of the people- to reaii tiiuJ au lcallc1at will remem her It long enough to repeat it when am dead n will not have lived in vain New York Journal Occasionally when Mr Roosevelt Is criticized by newspapers or public men protest Is heard from Mr Roose velts friends and admirers We beg to tell the friends and ad mirers that Mr Roosevelt himself has not been at backward about crit icising the Presidents of the United States In his writings he has not hesitated to talk plainly about citi zens temporarily located In the White House as servants of the people He has shared the general Impression that office does not make a man a god and put him beyond the reach of truth and beyond the censure of those whom he represents in office For the information of the Roose velt admlers who think it outrageous to criticise an exalted President we quote a few of Roosevelts own frank opinions about his predecessors in the White House President Monroe Mr Roosevelt has described in Ids biography of Benton as a gentleman of no especial abil ity but well fitted to act as a Presi dential figurehead President Jackson Mr Roosevelt de scribes as Ignorant and headstrong Of Van Buren Mr Roosevelt says that he would never have been heard of If he had governed his actions by a high moral standard President Tyler Mr Roosevelt calls a politician of monumental little seems to Mr Roosevelt the very smallest of small Presidents President Pierce Mr Roosevelt de- scrIbes as a small politician of low capacity and mean surroundings President Pierce In his annual mes sages argued according to Roosevelt with undaunted mendacity moral callosity and mental obliquity Buchanan Mr Roosevelt calls the timid shifty and selfish politician naturally fond of facing both ways Above are quoted just a few of Mr Roosevelts opinions of Presidents of the United States A few of the jectives that he applies to them are Ignorant small low mean mendac- Ious timid shifty selfish It Is true that Mr Roosevelts abuse is applied mainly to dead men But he the strenuous one will be first to acknowledge that what may be said with propriety of a dead man may be said oven more properly of a live man able to defend himself These facts are printed for the ben efit of those gentlehearted reveren tial ones who think that no President not even an accidental President should be criticised Perhaps extra reverential ones seeing how strenuously Roosevelt handles men who were actually elect ed to the United States Presidency will permit us a little gentle criticism of one of Mr Roosevelts recent acts Portraits of the wives of some of the Presidents have been removed from the White House walls and stored away in the callur or basement Mrs Hays is one of the ladies whose portrait is not found worthy of a place in the White House at presentIt bo generally admitted that Mrs Hayes cannot claim the aristo cratic New York Dutch blood of the Rooscvelts Perhaps It la all right for her to be sent to the basement But this excuse does not apply to George Washington He also was an aristocrat A famous portrait of George Washington the property of nation has also been banished to the basement for reasons that seem sound to Mr Roosevelt We beg to tell Mr Roosevelt that when an accidental President sends down to the basement a real Presi dent who mane this nation acci dental President shows lack of humor We suggest politely to Mr Rouse velt that It would be well for him at least to wait until the people of this country elect him President before tearing the Executive Mansion to pieces sending pictures of the wives of dead Presidents to the cellar and banishing the portrait of George Washington from the place where it has hung for years on a wall belong ing to the people- It seems necessary to remind Mr Roosevelt that the White House lie longs to the people and is kept up at their expense Temporary tenants should show spect to the peoples feelings mid their rights and an accidental tenant should be no exception to the rule CONDENSED Malcolm IowaPut me down for Dog Feennel Send Blades of De cember for enclosed stamps B MARTIN Howard IanI am so full I do not know how to condense ask by what authority and by whom was the doctrine of future pun ishment first promulgated According to the old Bible people lived for thousands of years without this Infamous threat hanging over them Now where and who first started this report that the creatures of this Imaginary God were to suffer eternally for the least mistake in this short life The Old Testament Is filled with warning to people who do wrong In this life Lilt the term of punishment ends at the grave have often thought that in this particular the Catholic teachings were more hu mane than that of the Protestartts The former teach that by a lavish use of money by the friends of the late lamented he may be rescued from hell but those who die In latter faith close nil the doors of hope behind It seems to me If there Is a being such as its powerful God and he has a spark of humanity about him he might have saved us from all this future suffering by making things right In the beginning They say he has the power Now If you know anything of the mousier who first originated or cir culated this Impossible Ho please let us know J II BUIlDETTE Answer The Jews who wrote the Old Testament knew nothing about either hell or heaven and there Is no such doctrine as salvation or dam nation alluded to In the Old Testa all the other religions had each a hell and a heaven and one boss God and one boss devil and a few years before Jesus was born the Jews divided into Pharisees and Saddu- cees and the Pharisees were a set of rascally Catholics anti Campbellltes who got up a hell and a heaven out of scheme and the Sadducees were Sad you see and wouldnt have it and they were the Infidels of that day and like all Infidels of all days were nice people- J went off on Pharisee side of the rumpus and strange to say Dally News In your issue of December 8th you print an extended report of an address delivered by Professor Frederick Wright of Oberlln College before tho of Dayton on The Uncer htlntl ucaanti Certain o profeHRolInstitution of learning that have not access to his lecture In full lie thinks It Impossible to obtain truths of science accurately because Its com putations are only approximate but asserts the absolute truths of religion because they are recorded In ill ble Even existence of God is es tablished because It Is stated In that revered book that In tho beginning Rod created heavens nnil tho earth The professor was a little unfortu nate In selecting tho science of as tronomers ho said admit their Inabll HellglonIity to comprehend tho mysteries of honestIfound a complete solution of them In opening declaration of tho Bible Theologians have been prayerfully searching the heavens for ages to find God Have they over really found him Astronomers have scientifically searched heavens for facts Which science has found most of truth that of theology or that of astronomy Theologians toll us God Is there but have no proof simply an assertion two Jff f Why did not God unfold to Adam all mysteries connected with himself and tho heavenly domain Why did He walt for moro than 2000 years to unfold them to Moses Astronomers tell us to direct our eye to a certain portion of heavens and we will there behold a com et just entering our system They had calculated the period of Its return centuries beforehand Were they mis taken Were wo disappointed Did the mysterfous visitor fall to appear on time How about astronomical calculations of planetary transits and solar and lunar eclipses How do they compare In exactness with the unsubstantiated assertions of theologians concerning God and Ills angels and their walking and talking with human beings hero on earth Which is the more accurato or hon est science that of religion or that of astronomy Tho book which forms tho basis of theology asserts that Cain went Into the Land of Nod and took a wife and brought up a family of children Whom dill ho marry Possibly God performed the same surgical opera tion upon him that ho did upon his father but If so Moses falls to state It Tho hook upon which theology Is founded tells us that Jesus Christ told Ills disciples that He would re turn to earth very soon after His as cension Did he return Suppose astronomer should proclaim tho return of Halleys cornet at a certain time and tho comet should miss the connection what would theologians think They would conclude Just exactly what scientists think of that early re turn of Jesus The professor sold The only be ginning of things which can be attri buted with any degree of certainty Is God Admitting that he existed be fore all things else it is easy to ac cept the Bible as true In all It says and to see that evolution Is nonsense It Is an easy task to postulate a prop osition butt tho professor perhaps knows that It Is not always quite so easy to demonstrate the truth of the propositionTo that from nothing God burst forth Into existence either with or without Ills own agency Is a prop osition that demands higher ground of intellectual activity than the metro assertion of a Jewish historian How Is It easy to accept tho Bible as true from admitted fact that God existed before all things In speaking of the evidence of a con trolling power above and beyond the solar system the professor had said a little before The only known planation of It Is tho Bible where It says that In the beginning God cre ated the heavens and the earth Here then is the professors logic God existed before all things else It would have been just as satisfactory perhaps to the inquiring minds of a class In geometry to have said the sum of tho angles of a quadrangle is greater than the sum of the angles of a triangle because the latter sum Is less than former but what would that class think when they had reach ed a full knowledge of the science of mathematics Professor Wright thinks that tho theory of evolution Is nonsense Possibly he has fol lowers who believe the same thing but he gave no reasons for his con elusion This Is not the proper time and place for discussing along tho line of evolution but we regret ceedingly his failure to give the reas ons for his dogmatic contempt for the highest class of thinkers tho world has produced JOSEPHINE K HENRY Versailles Ky N Y Dec 27 02 Bluo Grass Blade Some comments on a letter on So cialism in the Blade of October 17 suggested tills though not written until now do not know much of nature or those things not tho result of labor particularly those necessary to life or happiness as iron coal oil gas etc so exclu sively that he can compel others to como to his terms to get them or suffer distress for lack of them and thus bring them to dependence upon or subjection to him If as the Declaration of Indepen denco assorts every person Is dowed with an inalianable right to life liberty and the pursuit of hap piness it looks reasonable that no one or ones should havo tho power or law to monopolize anything pro duced by nature Instead of by men by which one could deprive another rightsI to ap coal iron Land is a product of nature and not of man primarily belongs to o etmuch as to another It Is as neces sary to life liberty anti happiness as iron coal etc IIt seems only just that every person of suitable age should have n right by lawtc get enough land for at least a home by payment of a reasonable sum without being depen dent upon the generosity when or cupidity of anybody that cx clusive possession or nwnorshlp of the land by only a part of tho pea greaterIlike things to oppress tho rest that none should or could rightly have If laud and outer Blade of December 7th Mr C C Moore springs another apparent Inconsistency about Methuselah anti quotes some of Genesis 1th and 5th chapter to provo It Now If any one will take the trouble to carefully read these chapters he will find that the Methuselah In Genesis and Methuselah in Genesis 21 were tiff ferent men Methuselah was a do sccdant of Cain and was born Rev eral hundred years before Methuselah who was a descendant of Seth Cains brother In Mr Moores quotation of Gen esis no cnnnged Methnsael to Methuselah Whether he did It inten tlonally do not know If the Bible had read Methuselah Instead of Metliusael it still would not havo contradicted Itself Take for example the following declarations C C Moore Is editor of the Blue Grass Blade and lives In Lexington C C Moore Is a stenographer for a branch house of B F Hevcry and Sons and lives In Memphis All tho apparent antagonism of the two statements vanishes when we are Informed there are two C Moores In this connection It might bo well to state that according to these two chapters there were two Enochs and two Lamechs It Is nothing uncom mon for descendants of brothers to have the same name Since Tabal was tho father of such as dwell In tents Jnbal was fath er of such as handle tho harp organ etc and none survived the Hood but Noah his wife his three sons and their wives Mr Moore is unahle to account for the tent dwellers anti or gan players which ho says existed af ter the flood He says they did not descend from Noah at all but the Bible does not say so They could have been descendants from Noah and Jabal and Jubal too and could have Inherited these tentdwelling and mu sical proclivities from the maternal side or In other words from Noahs wife or some of his sons wives Since such a thing Is perfectly reasonable It devolves on Mr Moore to show where tho Bible says none of these women wore descendants of Jabal or Jubal eternaltruthlieYours in the Interest of tho truth- J G ORSBURN Bordley that kind as a matter of policy hut an Infidel even supposing hum to bo perfectly tin consciousahle could not with public fontilment and public prejudice all against him and with no higher mo tlvo Their successful revolt against the kings priests tyrants of the earth gave to the world a hundred years for man to bo alone and that then and therefore God put Adam to sleep and took a rib out of wheel of an oxcart and a gate post If that account had remained In the New Testament to this day all that would have been necessary for Mr Orsburn to say would have been that there were THREE Judas Is
