was worth about 100000 and my parents were very Indulgent to me I was never Im moral and believe I got more happi ness out of money than those gener ally do who have It On the other hand while I have nev r or been very poor am and for years r have been far from rich and not as a consequence of extravagance or tr Idleness In any of my family or my selfkspent the several years that preached among the poorest people I ever sawtho mountaineers of Ken tucky I have seen a good deal of what we call rich society In Kentucky f none of whom of course are rich at all compared with the rich people of the East I mean by rich In Kent tucky people who are worth from one hundred thousand to 250000 was sixtyfive years old a few days since I am in extraordinarily can judge phy agtcaadlyealAUoutfroy mental health of course I cannot judge and about It k there seems to be a broad difference of opinion among others When was young I was very pop ular Now I hardly know whether to say I am popular or the reverse as people generally understand word ItnpPYroGive me neither poverty nor riches and of the story of Diogenes asking f Alexander to get out of his sunlight t I have thought much of Girard and t Tolstoi and Carnegie three Infidels who gave away millions of money to ff make others happy evidently thinking that it would make them happy to do r isoand I suppose this was the great est pride and happiness of their lives Would I take the millions of dollars if some multimillionaire would offer It to me think I would and this is what suppose 999 honest men out of 1000 would answer to that had to live with my millions as the ordinary millionaire lives I hardly think that I would ex change my present conuitlon for his It has not been my experience that rich men and women were happy consequence of their wealth I be lieve there is fmy as much unhappi ness among the rich in proportion to number as there is among the poor In cases of suicide in consequence of financial matters thing that while many of them are in conse quence of loss or fear of loss more lu thIII t JHullw1o t had an abundance upon which to live It now seems to me that If I were rich I would take great pride and pleasure in living just as as I now do though I would almost cer tainly be charged with an affectation of eccentricity or of humility or of penuriousness in case I was not very generous In this way I Imagine that all rich people feel that their motives are criticised and that they are apt to be doubtful of the friendship of any body because they know that un principled and designing men are apt to make friends of rich men while the proper kind of men may not be as kind to rich men as they would otherwise be because they are afraid of being suspected of hypocrisy There are some few Instances of peoplea majority of them menwho were friends to me as long as had money but who care little about me now But as it is now never for an instant suspect the genuineness of any mans or womans pretense who pretends to be a friend to me now because I cannot conceive of any mer cenary or selfish motive that any man woman or child could have In profess ing to be a friend to me now So that just any little word or deed of anyone that indicates friendship to me now is enjoyed by me as an evidence of real friendship for can conceive of no other motive than a genuine one that such a person might have No rich person can enjoy this as surance of the unselfishness of his friendsI not know of any mistake In life that think is making more un happiness than the idea that riches make happiness It not only keeps people continually straining to be rich but makes them try to appear richer than they really are so as to get the admiration of others and the result Is that they live in a style that is more expensive that they can afford and are always oppressed with debt is more suffering from debt tlThere than there is from a want of the necessaries of life If all people would live within their means though to do so would expose their poverty it would remove much of the unhappiness of life Fine things that are not paid for are of little pleasure to those who have them No good and sensible people have any less regard for people because they are poor unless their poverty is the result of some wrong doing and good people who have money are more Inclined to help poor people who act like poor people than they are to help poor people who act like rich people I think that all people should try to make money more than is neces sary for their own wants not In order that they may live as rich people gen erally do but that they may use It to do good While personally my family and- I live plainly I believe that we long to a very large class of farmers who are commonly supposed to live quite comfortably but who would be actually much happier if they would sell enough of what they have to free them Irom dept instead of striving t for all their lives to get out of debt and still hold what they have or ap pear to have and then live very much are not many people who are unhappy if they are out of debt and are all the time honestly employed- see ninny rich people men and women who seem to be unhappy Just for the want of somcuiing to do They have not the moral courage to use some of their superfluous money to help others and to occupy their time in profitable labor as poor peole have to do and it is pitiable to wit ness the unreasonable and unsatisfactory methods that these people use in trying to entertain themselves The poor man who owes nothing and Is able to engage his mind and healthfully exercise his body In honest labor that barely buys comfortable food and raiment for himself and for any who may justly depend upon him has far more reason to sympathize with the unoccupied rich man or the man who is simply hoarding money that he does not need than such rich men have to sympathize with such a poor man- I was once a haute clerk and a man came In to make a deposit who at the time had 75000 to his credit He said was a much happier man when I was a blacksmith making horseshoes than am now lIe left his family rich have watched their career and believe they would have been happier and he too If he had never attained any more than the fortune of the ordinary horse shoeing blacksmith remember that as a rich young man with no responsibility upon me used to envy the freedom from care that my fathers Negro slaves seemed to have as they went laughing and singing and whistling out to the fields to plow I have seen many fearful wrecks of the lives of men who start ed life about the same time that I did as rich young men But I hardly ever saw a young man start life as a poor man and who neuner used liquor nor tobacco whose life has been a fail ureGeorge W Bain now of Lexintgton known as a temperance orator from Boston to San Francisco now living in Lexington in comfort und honored as a benefactor of his race started so poor and obscure in my neighborhood about the same time that did that never heard of him until he be came famous and asked him where he was born and he said about five miles from where was and that he remembered my parents and me well when he was a little fellow and now in my prisonwritten book there are no pages of which am prouder thrn of those at Col Bain the most thrilling orator that Kentucky ever produced in all her cohorts of orators en couraging me when was a peniten tlary convict Young men am growing old and my career must soon he ended but want to tell you something that lope some thousands of you will recollect and repeat when am dead It is this There never was a man In America rich enough to afford to pay a nickel for liquor or tobacco and of course np poor man can afford to do It If even onhout
