BY HARRIET CLOSZ A wh16 ago received from our good brother Capt Lloyd souvenirs from the tree which grew from tlie grave of Thomnp Value Now on the eve of his departure for the Holy Land want to place my order with ExHev Moore for a twig from the tree on which Judas hung himself I wont something by which to remem her the man who made salvation for the race possible Wo are reminded of the awful condition we would oc copy had not Jesus died for us hilt we do not consider thin man who made It possible for Jesus to make It possible to redeem mankind am something of a relic hunter A piece of the original cross which sprouted and grew when It was hurtled would be acceptable and If all the dirt from Calvary and the garden of Gethscniano has not been carried away by Talmagos followers speak for Dean of the RIpen Church of Eng land Is about to clip thin wings ofI this angel of transfiguration for ho In quires whether Christ did not fall toI make a distinction between what modern science would have recog nized as death from a swooning Come to think of it Brother Moore you must not postpone your trip as all these sacred places are losing in terest The Dean mentioned above also suggests that the Idea of the Immaculate conception be left out of the Bible Ari earlier omission of c ij h 1ritifriKfff rIw ilchi roosted on the ridge pole of Bethle hems stable and Ohio would have missed the Jerusalem with cholera Strange slnt it that thin birth place of Christianity which claims to have civilized and uplifted the race has not boon aide to arrange sanitation and other conditions to overcome the cholera But If you get sick Just head your caravan toward Turkey for Dr Senn of Chicago says that the Sultan has the finest hospital In the world and strangers aro welcome No use to placed with Brother Moore CLOSZ COMMENTS Out In Brother Johnsons country there Is a talk of starting a now kind of trust The San Francisco Bulletin comes out with these headlines Why doesnt the clergy form right eousness trust- suppose one good reason why they do not Is because they cant corral the righteousness They never could get tho members of tho N L P Into a combine which represents 95 per cent of the criminals of the country and then expect them to sail under the name of the righteousness trust If the clergy would attend to the already formed trust which shel ters thin Imbecile degenerate criminal Christians In which they have so eas- Ily cornered the product of the ages with such a stupendous membership that the little competitor righteous ness or justice Is flattened out to the condition of the proverbial pancake they would he kept very busy 00The Presbyterian Synod of Illinois recently adjourned loudly laments the condition of unconverted pocket books of wealthy men and suggests a return to the old system of tithing The report of funds for this synod Is said to bo the lightest for several years hut It records a million and a quarter of dollars If this amount Is raised from voluntary giving in thin Illinois Synod what would It bo in all thin states If compulsory extortion be gan We Infidels have much to do Wo must not only save the Freethink ers from being Imposed upon but must show the Injustice of these methods and save the Christians from tnemselves or rather from tho church rulers A dear friend of mine who was raised under the tithing system has repudiated tho church and severe ly censures her father because tho tithes exacted by tho church pre eluded thin possibility of her gaining an education and thin bitterest collections of childhood are thin driv ing of a fat steer a load of grain- or hay or other farm produce to the tithing office after she had worked to help produce them Great Is the tith ing system 00An old lauy wno is u regular them tq her There mother I have brought you some church papers The aged matron sullIed tho air and replied Well you have wasted your time for those pers tell gibber lies than any other kind Thin woman was right Tho stories in such papers remind one of the thief who In his solicitude to hide his plunder poled It through the hole In the wall until It showed on thin other side These Christian yarns are so fanatically absurd that their most devout adherents cannot fall to see their inconsistency and when we wonder why it Is that church members accept statements made by the minister and yet reject the church literature we conclude that the personal characteristics of the pastor the charm of his presence tho desire to have a leader induce one to yield all thought standing alone or cultivating a spirit of Inves tigatlon But when In the solitude of the home these same stories are presented In cold type the mind at once begins Independent action and they are repudiated as nonsensical Injudicious and even entirely false Talking speeches lectures convert very few people It Is the reading matter which counts and It behooves us to sow broadcast our liberal tracts If Christians falsify In their statements that fact will rebound to our credit anti a few thought provok log tracts presented to friends and neighbors will hear fruit to feed the coming generations 0 In the early springtime a sympo slum on hell occupied valuable space In tho Hams Horn and was partlc pated in by ministers with varying handles to their names was so unwise as to write a letter of Inquiry to the editor which here Insert ASKS FOR ENLIGHTMENT Editor of the Rams Horn- have read with Interest the sym posium on the subjects pertaining to hell in the March 15th issue but I confess am as much at sea as be fore Dr Johnson tells us hell Is a condition yet does not deny to It a locality DI Dixon declares hell to be a defi nite place Dr Hanilln seems to evade the question by saying Material pun ishment Is Impossible for spiritual beings Dr McArthur declares that Hell Is a place but a condition as well and further asserts that nell Is an un known land While these learned doctors aro not agreed on tho location they agree fairly well In deciding that when sin ners once get Into this place or con dition or both their stay Is Indefi IIlte Some time ago I read a similar symposium In which a dozen or more ministers participated and only one of tho number declared ho believed In the literal hell as set forth In the Bible and as believed In by Moody and Splll eon 0NowIs a common uninformed individual to decide these questions which mean so much to tho human family both hero and hereafter when doctors of divinity who spend their lives In such a study cannot agree Any Information you can give me will be gratefully received HARRIET 11 CLOSZ Webster City Iowa Ever since thin publication of this Inquiry I have been the recipient of letters pamphlets leaflets and mag dispatch For a few weeks undertook to look over thin literature answer tho ters and return a copy of Woman and her relation to thin Church a copy of thin Blade and the N L PIliterature but the deluge became so heavy that like Methuselah wallI compelled to stand from under and keep very quiet for a long time The flood has somewhat subsided after months of downpour tho latest shower having fallen yesterday day being Sunday am exempt and the rnlnboAv of promise begins to pear on thin horizon It Is unnecessary to announce that thin outer garment of Infidelity has remained Impervious to this Christian baptism but thin leathern shield of Christianity Is de fective in many points and tho fire extinguisher of tho skeptics is des ined to submerge and destroy It Were we as dllllgent In be the way with the Magazine The chances aro that It would be much better ev ery way than you or expect and con talc twice as much as any Infidel as have always said If you are willing to risk our getting It out the money would help Mr Hughes If you want to send It now100 but I do not at all expect that or ask it In the 20 years nearly since tho Blade started nobody has ever yet lost one cent In speaking about Dog Fennel In the Orient says When Bennet of the Truth Seeker came out of prison his friends sent him around the world Bennet was a man of courage and did a great work and reverence his memory I think it is understood flat he tiled as the effect of his im 0prisomimiieiitmore than any Infidel prolm who has lived in tho last century I do not ask anybody to send mo around the world 100 such a book as would ordinarily cost 160- Kidders Sacrament It consists of a beautiful sixteen page pamphlet printed in large type with elegant paper cover The price Is 10 cents each or 12 for 100 LjtJ WHAT CAN WE WILL WE OUGHT WE TO DO ABOUT IT Somebody has sent me a copy of the Kansas City Star having marked In It a long article about Rev Dr A B Simpson getting 60000 for the missionaries at one passing around of the hat- Simpson says that all of that cept one per cent will be sent to the missionaries suppose that means that he will keep hack 600 of It to pay for preaching that sermon These missionaries are the measely devils that robbed the Chinese and debauched their women until they got us Into the Chinese war Another one of these missionaries- Is a she and with all my partiality for women think she ought to be In some well regulated workhouse Its that woman Stonewell named she Is a hard party If she would Just turn out some side whis hors and put on a plug hat shin would look for rill the world like old Oom Paul Kruger She Is so ugly that no white man will marry her and so she goes over to the heathen and tries to break to a Turkish harem but the turbaned Turk said he couldnt see It and sold her back to the Christians for 000 and Stone and the Turk divided the Ijoodle and then Stone came baclI to the Christians to lecture but was so ugly that the boys wouldnt have It and now she announces her Intention of going back again and she and theTurk will soon be clamor- Ing for another 75000 Of course I know that it is much cosier to raise money for such rascally purposes as Simpson and the Stone woman are doing than it Is for lion orable moral elevating purposes But is it possible that in the whole Infidel world or even that fraction of known as pile of money out of you you are a gang of weaklings that deserve to be duped If were to ask you to put 000 Into Mr Hughes hands you might very reasonably say it was the same old game and that of course Hughes and I would divvy But I dont want you to do anything like that or even to put 1000 Into Mr Hughes hands have seen Mr Hughes stand adver sity for years I can do thrtt myself and have seen thousands of other people do It but I have never yet seen the man or woman who could stand prosperity and I dont want either Mr Hughes or myself subjected to the test At the same time It Is true that the Blue Grass Blade Is losing at the rate of 20 a week and is only able to keep going by Its linotype running continually doing outside work which Its gets because it is the very finest kind of a machine and Mr Hughes understands all about his business and is a perfectly moral man and an Indefatigable laborer and commands the resj ect and fidence of all who know him Friends of the Blade have paid 500 on It less than onesixth of Its cost The Blade office both because Mr Hughes and know about the publishing bus Inessho the mechanical and I the literaryis thin most complete pub lishing house In America of Its cost and though the Blade has perhaps thin largest circulation of any Infidel publication in thin world and Is read y probably two or three times as many as any other It Is still Walter Hurt widely known as the brilliant editor of the Catling Gun of Clove land Ohio that was suppressed by the law state or national I forgot which because he told the truth about the lewdness of Inspirational orators and ex plained that all five got their early education and principles from their fathers who were ministers of the gospel I regard Robert Ingersoll as having been a decidedly J1i r b U fl BLUE GRASS BLADE I ANOTHER VICTIM OF IGNORANCE AND TYRANY Tho suicide of Ida C Craddock which occurred recently in New York City Isa tragedy so deep and heart rending as to set the fountain of sympathy flowing Not that sympathy can in any way effect the woman who was hounded to her death by the emissaries of ignorance anr tyranny who pose as protectors of society but because it may awake to action those who have high and noble IrteaU that the common herd have never dreamed of I have no knowledge of the nature of the work Ida C Craddock was en gaged in for which she was con demned to prison I never read a line of her writings but the press generally admits that she was are fined and cultured woman inspired with the idea of elevating the human race by shedding more light and knowledge on the present marriage system If our present marriages stem is not fetid with wrongs why is the American press calling on the leaders of thought and the brains of conservatism to discuss it If the system contains all good aid no evil why should the great metropolitan dallies weight down their columns with this subject As long as It is discussed from the clerical or ortho dox standpoint there is no danger sig nal raised but let grand souls arise freighted with new and lofty thoughts and grander Ideas than have ever peen realized in the most sacred of all human relations and they are pursued to prison or death by self constituted censors who pose as protectors of public morals Ida C Craddock whether her ideals were right or wrong was just such a woman was so imbued with her principles that rather than re sign them she died WITH them and for them There have been compar atively few of the human race who have laid down their lives for their something akin in the tragic fates of Robert Emmett and Ida Cradock Though the law took the Irish martyrs life and Ida C Craddock took her own life they both gladly welcomed death for their principles Until the writings and the motives of this woman are pass ed upon by competent sociologists physicians and judges Let no one dare attaint her memory by believing that she was engaged in any cause save that of the elevation of human ity Dead Ida C Craddock Is titled to the poor boon of a suspen sion of judgment until that time Perhaps the day will como when ig crance will capitulate to knowledge Iii und power step down from Its blood mined throne to crown its martyrs The world today is thirsting for scientific facts in relation to sexol ogy the most important of all sub jects for human beings to bo enlight ened upon but one on which pro found ignorance prevails For this reason disease insanity misery session deformities and domestic warfare run riot in what Is claimed to be the highest civlllzaifon Has the United States become so Russian ized that honest thought uttered for an honest purpose should receive per secution instead of protection Is our domestic system so perftct that it needs no improvements Does the government give a life time office and a salary to detective Comstock to determine what shalland shall not bo written on the most vital subjects Where did detective Comstock get his ability and competency to pass upon the vital questions that have defied the wisdom of the ages It sometimes happens that tho re jected persecuted Idea becomes the corner stone of the elevation of hu Craddock Is In her grave for writing her honest thoughts on the problemjmiserable victims of ignorance cry aloud for a solution of It Ignorance Is the mother of misery The time must come and will cone when ev ery couple who enter the marriage relation will be fully Instructed In the laws of their being and tho du ties of parenthood Ida C Craddocks brutal persecu thou and tragic death may be a mighty influence to lift the marriage system The remedy for the evils that are preying upon the family life of the nation suggested by women and men should be given the deep est thought Free press free speech and free discussion on this vital ques tion are tho pressing need of our time And this if the American people are wise will they have or know tho reas on why JOSEPHINE K HENRY Versailles Ky DR HAMMERS CASE Some of the Mistakes of Pardoning Secretary Garrett Bro A A Snow if Bracewell Iowa has sent me a copy of a letter ho sent to Gov Cummins about tho par don of Dr Hammer In the letter occurs the following Perhaps it would not be proper for mo to state the Pardoning Secretary Garrett made mistakes without point Ing out some of them- FirstTimat Wheatcraft came where Hammer was abusing upI Whcatcrafts father I find ing in the report of tho trial would give Wheatcraft any thatI for thus following up Hammer Whcatcrafts own father said and Hammer shook hands and Hammer said ho was sorry he had had trouble with his tho elder 1Vheat1 son and nothing came 1SecondThat J Wheatcraft Now Wheatcraft and his brother I think Snow means his father Editor Moore so state while the rest of the witnesses that make any statement regarding tho commencement contradict this and there are manynear a dozen there were eleven who contradicted ItEditor MooreThirdThat there was another Indictment against tho man Hammer for murder in tho second degree that would without doubt result In conviction was given as a reason why the man should not be pardoned- It was a mistake to alllrm that it would probably result In conviction Also a mistake to assign It as a reason why ho should not be pardon ed as tho sequel has shown It maybe presumable grounds why ho should be Very truly A SNOW Comment To the best of my knowledge and belief all the state ments made by Snow are accurate When we begun scnnlng In tho Petitions Secretary Garrett answered many of them assigning his own reasons why Hammer should not bo par doned We beat every argument that he made by furnishing him what was demanded and then he quit answer Ing us DEATH OF KATE AUSTIN A letter from tho sister of Kate Austin of Caplinger Mills Mo which has come to Blade office and which I have not seen announces the death of Kate Austin She was a woman of strong mind and a forceful writer She was long a friend to me and never turned against mo but she an Anarchist and I could never wasI pathise with her doctrine Still It Is not a matter of surprise to me that many strongminded and conscientious people are anarchists What the Government of England has lately done in crowning a beast ly fool and Its perpetual war of mill der and extermination of Innocent men women and children for the purpose of robbing and debauching of women getting Its authority from Bible is infinitely worse than any representative anarchist would do to day if he or she had unlimited pow er anti this government is every day getting to be more and more like the English government and will finally be just as had as that unless Infidelity can destroy the power of Chris therefore anarchy even of the kind that proposes to accomplish its purpose by peaceable means is ir rational and unphllosophic it Is the national result of tho injustice and ahsurdlty of Christian government Peace to the ashes of Kate Austin CRITICISES NOT ANARCHISTS Wlnns Firebrand Is Intensely Relig ious and Wants to Preach the Gospel of Christ It is a common charge made by Christians against Infidels that Anar chy is the outgrowth of Infidelity- I have yet to see in any paper in the world that claims to be an Infidel paper an utterance favoring either Anarchy or Freelove and I will print In tho Blade any such passage that anybody may send me Tho National Liberal Party one of tho two great Infidel National organizations of America declares against those two things and yet every leading Infidel propagandist that I know of Including myself believes that so far from the government trying to keep hidden all matters of sex as it is now doing thero should bo a spec ial arrangement for competent and scientific instruction of the public on that point have received tho third issue of Winos Firebrand printed at Mount Juliet Turin Its name is intendedo to Indicate the radical character of Its anarchy Tho whole paper Is devoted to the inculcation of Anarchy Among its utterances are tho following It is opt a pertinent question to put to us anarchists Anarchy Is an Ideal to be attained by a blameless life =An archy will not be attained until the people are educated to It and want It took tho pains to count tho pearance of tho names God Christ lesus and Christianity In this Issue of the Firebrand and they appear 47 times and ho Methuse lah hall a prediction that way One of the Imporlant problems of the day seems to be to find the ago of Methu solnh An this Is so important the vital Issues before the American peo pIe should bo laid aside until It Is settled Now comes tho Russian scientist Plasctskl who says that Bible Pa triarchs lived a thousand years and were giants Rabbi Levy says that In Rnhhlnlcnl literature there Is abun dant proof that the statement There were giants In those hays was ac cepted as llteerally true starting with Adam ho Is represented as having been so tall that ho reached from earth to heaven and only shrank after his sin Poor Adam what with hay ing his rib sawed out tho talking snake tho wily woman tho sour ap plo that stuck in his throat the voice of tho Lord that walked In tho gar den and tho shrinking process sure ly his life was not one glurt sweet song As to Methuselahs age If we conld get direct spirit communication with his father Enoch the exact date of his birth might bo obtained Genesis 521 tells us that Enoch lived sixty and five years and begat Methuselah Verse 22 says And Enoch walked with the Lord after he begat Methu selah three hundred years Certain ly this was tho champion walking match of the ages Methuselahs father was an accomplished pedes trian no doubt about that Genesis 624 says And Enoch walked with God and he was not for God took according to this Methuselah was left an orphan at the tender age of 300 years and as God took his father in such a mysterious manner and tho family did not witness his taking off and ho had no grave In tho family lot or monument to re cord his virtues surely all this must have added to their grief But another difficulty arises The Higher Critics claim that when the Bible says Years It means months If as Uncle Rastus says tho High er Crickets know Methuselahs case stands this way If as the Bible says that Enoch begat Methuselah at the ago of sixty and five years and years mean months then Enoch was just five years and fivo months old when his son Methuselah was born and If r Methuselah was years and years means months then Methuselah lived eighty years and nine month accord Ing to the present calendar And now comes Prof Garrett P Serviss the scientist Writing on the ages of the Biblo Patriarchs he says There Is a growing belief based up on tho results of scientific criticism that the patriarchs mentioned by name In the Bible previous to the time of Moses such as Noah and his predecessors and even including Abraham himself do not stain for Individual men but for tribes Upon this view the 900 years ascribed to Methuselah verb not Intended as the life time of a single man lint as the period during which a tribe of that name flourished Of course It would be difficult to find the ago of a man who never lived at all If Methuselah did live combine Bi ble records theological conclusions scientific research and Higher Crit icism and tho number of years Me thuselah lived and his exact birthday Is as hard to find as happiness the grave of Moses the Fountain of Youth the North Polo who built tho Pyramids who struck Billy Patterson or tho ago of Col Craddock JOSEPHINE K HENRY to get 100 more that day The two arguments made against Dr Hammer In the beginning were that no petitions were being sent from his own county and that even If he was not guilty In the first case he would ho convicted of having mur dered a woman Now the Judge has dismissed the charge of murder against Dr Ham mel as being perfectly absurd and snppoSo almost every reputable person male antI female In Jasper county In which Dr Hammer lived will ask that he may be pardoned and that no body of any standing In the county would oppose his being pardoned The Colfax Clipper asks the Blade to exchange with It on account of my friendship for Dr Hammer and I do not suppose there Is a paper In Iowa that would do anything against him- think that as many as 5000 or names have gone to Gay Cum mins for for November BROTHERMOORES BRAINS Brother Moore continues to train truth as a contortionist in his organ tho Blade Ho is still doing the sower act by dlcharging the crime anti misdemeanors of the clergy Into tho cesspool of nauseous publicity The best that Moore can hope to complish to help feed the fires of ligious bigotry anti Intolerance by setting an example thereof par excellence If the Christian is wrong he can certainly bo coaxed more easll than cursed out of his error Am really there Is such a thing as agnostic fanaticism for men are fanatic not by creed but by disposition The physiognomy of Brother Moore hid cates the fanatical temperament know from personal experience that he is unfair as a controversialist that he avails himself not only of tho tricks of the craft I do not refer to the death of his daughter but sorts to straight out suppression of articles that he could have had no possible reason to suppress except that ho could gain nothing by pill llshing them As a result of his one sldedness Moore can only hope for a permanent following of mosslmc provincials who have twentieth cer tury bodies Infested with fourth tury minds Brother Moore Incline me strongly to a belief In Berkcloj Ism which holds that nothing trnly exists everything wo see Is merely an Illusion just a notion we have for certainly It is difflcult to bqllov he Is anything more than a spllnte from the wreck of some runawa nightmare He reminds me not a tie of Bottom at the time of his translation and his ardent admirers are very much like the fairy who fell In love with him The only thing that Brother Moor ever said about me that hurt was that LJiad stolen some of his ideas who has done nothing so mucli during tho last ten years as revel In tho greater part of the best literature from Plato to Herbert Spencer It Is a little more than human flesh can bear to be told that he has actually stolen a few crumbs from a literary starveling like Brother Moore I always assume that my reader has read as much as I have and an therefore careful to make a prove use of quotation marks If anyone needs a thought bad enough to steal it from Brother Moore that is pun- Ishment enough without adding posure to incurable depravity The above Is ono of four articles In f the November Issue of Isonomy about me Ono of tho others Is like this abusive one Is complimentary and one Is a copy from Wlnns Firebrand rebuking Isonomy and defending me As to my giving publicity to the crimes and misdemeanors of a clergy It Is simply a fact that no body ever sees anything of the lint in my paper that is not a reprint from sonic other paper but sup pose I found them out and printer them first what canon of Journalism is it that says the crimes and demeanors of the clergy are not to be published like the crimes and misdemeanors of other criminals and misdemeanants Isonomy suggests coaxing In t stead of cursing In dealing with the wrong doings of Christians and yet speaking of the New Voice the Chris tian Prohibition paper edited by a Protestant preacher and managed by Christians Isonomy In this same Is sue speaks as follows This Now Voice outfit is an aggre gation of the dirtiest liars In the uni verse the most pusillanimous pup pies the commonest curs In Chris tendom It Is without honor and de voJd of shame It will stoop to the commission of any cowardly action 1thatIs calculated to further Its cause well that the scorbutic scullions persist in withholding their names We know the Identity of not one sneaking hyena in the bunch but wo will wager a hundred that the main guy In the delectable aggregation of pusillanimous asses is a nigger snenk thief or a Chinese We can conceive of the existence of few others so low In the scale of human kind as to employ the tactics of the traitor who will partake of tho hospitality of a people and then deavor their best to defame them who will asperse and calumlnato tho Catholics without even a shadow of a cause There Is much more in this Issue of Isonomy about its Christian brother The New Voice to the same effect In the above quotation from Isonomy put a blank In the place of one word that frequently occurs in Isonomy and is too indecent to pear In print except In a medical book where It Is necessary to discuss an indelicate idea Ladles read and write for tho Blade and It would be improper to print it in my paper I never saw it In any other news paperIf be not a Catholic organ of good common sense and honesty he would call such a word as that obscene literature rather than the language of good and Intelligent men and women who refer to certain mat ters of sex in the interest of health and good morals If Isonomy ho not a Catholis organ in disguise why dues it resent the aspersion and calumniation of the Catholics more than It would of tho Protestants For while do not at all admire tho religious tone of tho New Voice though my opposition to liquor Is much more radical titan that of the New Voice anybody who knows anything at all about that paper knows that its likes and dis likes are perfectly uninfluenced by t Jr protcstIantR opposed the candidacy for Preslden of Methodist McKinley because Mi Klnnley rented a house In Cantor Ohio to a brewing company of Wheeling W Va suppose there may be agnostic fanatics am 1Iot an agnostic myself am an atheist and there may be atheistic fanatics and may be one If I am like It and will so remain until see stun thing better As to my physiognomy indlcatin my fanatical temperament hardly think that would have occurre to Isonomy If it had seen my picture in a patent medicine advertisement instead of In tho northwcp corner of the first page of my papei think If my picture and that of Douglas the 300shoe man In the beginning gotten swapped anll remained so to this day Isonom would have made that same remark about Douglas picture thinking It was mine can see no better reason for sui pressing an article than the fact that I could gain nothing by publishing It The allusion to Berkeleylsm may all right and good but my wife take The Ladles Home Journal and wheel feel inclined to work on lltcrnr puzzles look Into the puzzle depart anent of that paper same about of Isonomys pieces In thd Issue It indulges In profanity think It learned It from the Blade read some of Platos Gorgias In Greek when was a college boy am some of Herbert Spencer since then and do not remember to lucre sect any profanity In either of them On the first page of tho Novcmbe Isonomy Is an article that closes what I have seen of thel both Reed and Arm engagelllInpeculiar genius of the Blue Gras Blade Moore himself Is a tough old cuss with a penchant for saying fun ny and foolish things about himself and Jehovah and others hat he doesnt mean anything particular It Armstrong Is smart anti brllllan and Reed Is nobodys fool but their journal is about the silliest piece of literature I ever looked atVlnnsFirebrand Mount Juliet Tennessee MCARVEY GETS BLOWED OUT BY AN ORGAI Rev McGarvey and his wlfo and six others same number that were saved In tbe nrk liavo nil left tho Broadway Christian CamlhelllteIChurch In Lexington Into Its performancesIthemselves to the Christian Church a smaller affair on the outskirts of the city built for the poorer class of the Campbcllltof- McGarvcy Is only hoisted on his own petard The New Testament re llKlon has no authority for any music except psalms and hymns anti splrll nil Colossians 310 and tho distinguishing tenet of the Camp hcllltc church Is that nothing Is bind- Ing In religion that is not taught In tho Now Testament and so far the music question Is concerned Mc Garvey Is right But McGarvey the victim of his own inconsistency There Is not only no authority for any Sabbath In the New Testament but plain teaching that there nhoiili ho no Sabbaths in the Christian religion see Romans xlv 1G and Cc losslans 1110 but It suited tho put poses of McGarvey to have a Sabbath and so he went to the Old Testamen to get it Exodus 208 and now when It suits the Valance of the con gregation to have an organ they go to the Old Testament for their an thority for Instrumental music anll find it abundantly In IJsalms 332 and Psalms 15015 When McGarvey began preaching 50 years ago ho saw that It was practically impossible to havo a Christian religion without a Sabbath and though the Now Testament taught that there should bo no Sal bath McGarvey thought the end justified the means and so ho had a Sabbath just like tho rest of tho churchesAt time the Campbellltes were poor and humble as all religion sects are in beginning rfhd there was no demand for organs among them and McGarvey proclaimed with a flourish of trumpets and a blowing of his bazoo that his church used no the Campbellltes have gotten to he the richest and most Influential church in Lexington having threi cnurches and two colleges in the town Infidelity has so Influences the people that now no congregation can be sustained in Lexington among tho wealthy and more cultivates class by simply preaching the gos pel to them and continually drum fining Into their ears faith repentance and baptism and tho story of Philip and the eunuch as they did when McGarvey and I started to preach and In order to keep up a re spectable congregation they mils have a respectable appearance ant must have the same gratification of tastes and vanities that the other churches have and so the Christian church on North Broadway in Lex- Ington now adopts thjo organ as the Central Christian church In Lexing ton had previously done and Mc Garvey now the most prominent ing Campbelllto has to go way bacli and sit down on Chestnut street close to tho boys at the race track and the girls on Megowan street when he wants to worship God on tae old plan At Georgetown Ky there Is the Christian church that was establish by my grandfather Stone In 1803 My grandfather was a poor man and became poorer by emancipating his slaves He hoed potatoes by moonlight hut was a scholar and I Inher- It tho Bible In the original Hebrew hat he read He was said by everybody to be a good man but was call ed a heretic Nine years later Alexander Camp came along and the whole great reformatory work of my grandfather was changed Into a great absurdity jf which baptism was tho leading eaturc McGarvey accented this surdity and now Darsle the pastor of that church lately said people who do not take interest in the hurch and work for JeSus are greater criminals than the murderers of Jro Chinn and t mi church has egularly In Its worsmp an organ and a cornet and a fiddle and the organist is a Presbyterian paid to come from Lexington and blow the thing for them- MONKEYS HAVE RELIGION L Garner tho
