ben efactions and on each building Is placid a carved stone bearing the Inscription Carnegie library Where ever these Institutions are planted tho town or city Councils take on themselves to tax the people for the support of these libraries The people who pay tho taxes are not consulted in this matter and the Car negler uibrary tax Is added to the nu merous t and increasing assessments Mere y tainment and pastime This class Is composed largely of women who read fiction often of a type which destroys theft usefulness in life The leisure class devour works of fiction and these constitute a large majority of tho books of all these li braries The question presents Itself Is It right to tax the struggling poor to perpetuate these literary monu ments to Mr Carnegie If Mr Car negie had elected to nave devoted his wealth to the establishment of manual training schools or schools of technology a public tax to support such schools would not be so un just as such scools would fit techildren of the poor as well as rich to enter life with either a trade or scientific profession thus advanc ing the industral of the nation Many of those men who through toll helped to pour gold into Mr Car negies coffers are now taxed to perpetuate his memory as a benefactor The prodigal generosity and philan thropy of Americas steel king has ex cited the wonder and admiration of the world but tho taxing of poor people without their consent to main tain his princely benefactions is wrong and detracts from most gigantic educational scheme the world has ever seen One manual training school like that founded by Booker Washington is doing moro practical good to a anyonehunliredCarneglo laud Another wrong done to the public at largo Is tho refusal of these libraries to place upon SUPREME COURT DECISION Lincoln Neb Oct 10The State Supreme Court has handed down a decision forbidding the reading in the public schools of the Bible or the slfiglng of such songs as Nearer My God to Thee The decision is Exercises by a teacher in a public school in a school building in school hours and in the presence of the pupils consisting of the reading of passages from the Bi ble and in the singing of songs and hymns and offering prayer to the Deity in accordance with the trines beliefs customs or usages of sectarian churches or religious or ganizations are forbidden by the constitution of the State The action was one brought by Daniel Freeman an Atheist who holds the honor of being the first homesteader in the United States Freeman maintained that the St James Bible is not a correct transla tion of the Scripture but was a vtsr slon specially made for the Church of England that it contains much that is unfit to read aloud and being a part of the Christian religion is therefore years after the flood Of course the ques tion naturally presented Itself Where was Methuselah during the flood I am In receipt of several letters asking me to tell where in the Bible it is said that Methuselah died after the flood In answering this question I have consulted one of the ablest theologians in this country and this is my replyThere Is no one passage in the Bible that says that Methuselah was born before the flood and that he lived until after tho flood and yet the Bible according to the chronology of Bishop Usher the only chronology accepted by the Catholics and Protes tants this chronology being the one that is printed in all Bibles that print dates at the heads of pages states that Methuselah was born 781 before the flood and lived until 188 years after the flood to mako his 969 years The learned theologian whom I have consulted Is of the opinion that Bishop Usher obtained his chronology by counting the ages of the people from Adam to Methuselah at the time their first sons daughters not count ed were born and then adding them togetherIn 525 the birth of Methu selah is recorded and the date of his birth is indicated at the top of the page upon which his birth is record ed is 3130 B C In Genesis 71 the announcemnt is made of Noahs going into the ark and the date at the top of this page is 2349 B C that is Methuselah was 781 years old when tho flood came and had to live 188 years after the flood to complete his 969 years This is Indeed a momentous subject and I desire to be as correct as cir cumstances will permit in treating it As I was not present at the birth of Mr Methuselah I cannot be absolute ly certain as to his birthday I would not cast a single reflection on his memory by making him out older than he was Dear old fellow If he
