all tho balance of tho church put to gether ami was just abouut an good as any of them Tho Presbyterians named It Mount Iloreb because it was on a perfectly level piece of ground n kind of Cal name is Hopper but ho aint a blue grasshop per he comes from the Pennyrllo de strlctof Kentucky thinkthat ik he originally did so now ho just comes from anywhere and goes any where traveling around as an evan gelist His Job Is to go around among the churches and whoop em up and make em Jlnti that is the tobacco people and children no body else ever fines In Kentucky Sometimes they jinn by letter and swap around from ono church to another but if any grown man of or dinary Intelligence lucre were to jlne any church they would send him to a lunatic asylum for crazy Uncle Jo as every body except himself calls himhe speaks of him self as Uncle all the time hes preaching la 74 years old and heH all the time bragging about it like I do about being 65 years old Thompson tho pastor of the church is ah educated and nice man He and I were the only two men in the whole educationi f vt JWii y i tjV were In iTodk a seat just three pews from the back of the church and had on exactly the same clothes I had been digging sweet pota toes in all day except that I had put on my coat- Thompson spied me and got cle Jo and came marching him up tho aisle and Introduced him to mo Uncle Jo soon found ho couldnt talk In the plural tenses like Thomp son and mo and had sense and good manners enough to leave soon which Is better than preachers generally do Uncle Jo Is a regular typical sky buster I reckon that man has eaten a million chicken legs Thompson stood and talked so long that I was afraid he wouldI neglect the balance of the show and I had to sorter shut him lIe said It was just five otToII was at that church told me all tho circumstances just as remembered them and I reckon he was right as to the time for a very little a with meIThere was one educated woman in that churcheducated by old Ruckor same old devil that sent me to the blowed the organ had two pedals on it like a grind stone and she jumped onto em with both feet and worked the keys like a linotype and it made a nice racket would have enjoyed music ex cept for ono old bald headed rooster that sung bass lie makes his grub watching a bonded whisky warehouse and smelling whisky so much him awful red No wonder makesI call him old lobster Old lobster would wait a little every time the balance of tho singers started out on a fresh verse some thing about Jerusalem the place want to go to you know and then ho would bust out with his bass and ketch up with the balance of them and ho raised more ackct than a biter factory and a turnpike steam rock crusher together I have been going to that church about once In every five years now for over fifty years and overy time InI all that time while kingdoms and wars and nations and volcanoes and other things of that kind have gone up and gone down old lobster has been scttln right in that same spot galloping up behind the balance of tho singers with his bass all on their way to Jerusalem It had to go to that church oftenor than onto every five years would darllnightAll of us around here that Is tho men steal and Ho occasionally but we do It In moderation just like all honest men do everywhere else but In the whole South end of Dog Fen nel precinctthat I name my book after there Is only ono man that ev erybody knows as a smooth article and slick thick and there was that fellow right up next to the two sky busters running the shebang Well finally Uncle Jo arose and announced that we would all engage In a short prayer Of course that included me and Uncle Jo as my rep resentative argued the Question with ij Jwt the Lord In that prayer for three quarters of an hbtir I Suppose if he was wound up for a IbngVprayor he would take a week UncleJoargucdwlththoLord that there was a lot of those people that ought to be saved and reckon ho was right about It for I know thero were some of them that were not worth hell room arid if I am to go to tho devil I hope they will go to the other place for I am tired of seeing them hero Then Uncle Jo read a chapter in the Bible and he Is very first Presbyterian preacher I ever saw In my life who knew how to do that Old Dr Bob Brecklnrldgo used to stuff about a quart of snuff up his nose every day and It affected liffl voice and it always reminded me of the Song of tho catarrh that says the mood is beamlg All these other Kentucky Presby terian skybusters try to imitate old Bob and the only part of him that they have got sense enough to mutate is the snuff part of him and when a Kentucky Presbyterian sky buster gets up and gets to talking about Gawd always feel like say In Go out of doors and plo your old Uncle Jo preached and a hell of a preach It was l put in my time looking at pret ty woman across the aisle from me The only thing I remembered to have heard in Uncle Jos sermon was about a young fellow who was pass ing by a Presbyterian Church and Mrs H asked him to come in and hear the sermon and he said No thank you Mrs H lvlll come some other time and tlfjy young felllow walked on and before he got as far as from here up to tho cross roads somebody killed him and Mrs H went up there and there was the young fellow dead as the devil and of course his soul had gone to hell like shot off a shovel rJ In five more yearswhen the Blaue will have subscribers going to that church again but Iani going to wait outside until thefirst song Is through and If old lobster Is not still of Gaines ville Florida in which has been con ducted quite a bitter religious dis cession between the two editors The animus of the thing seems to be that the Sun that Is the exponent of the oldfashioned backwoods ligion and gushes continually about how the dear Savior with a large S sited his precious blood for our sal vation wants to break down its ri val the Times by charging it with Infidelity agnosticism and Ingersoll idea of the status quo can be gotten from the beginning of an ed itorial In the Sun of August 21 which is as AGNOSTICISM Tho how of this life as well as its finality Is ono of those Inexplatnable mysteries that invade the thought of above paragraph is an cerpt from the Rev L W Mooress ply to tho editorial in Tuesdays Sun wherein this paper undertook to crit icise certain editorial comment of Gainsvllle News wherein that paper justified the religion of tho agnostic as defended by the notorious Inger soll It will be recalled that the Rev L W Moore Is the editor of Florida Christian Advocate the church organ of the Methodist Cen ferenco in State of Florida It is therefore with the profoundest regret and which will be concurred In by thousands of the reverend gentle mans friends and denominational fol lowers that wo observe that he has apparently forsaken tho faith of the Bible and gone off after strange gods All Christian believers in Florida will be startled by his bold announce ment Then tho Sun goes on to belittle and brow beast Moore in the usual style of Christians Moore answers but not in very good or strong style beginning each paragraph of his answer with tho words It was a wonderful spurt Then a writer who seems to be a straight Infidel and who signs him self Homo takes up the subject and In a good sensible dignified ar ticle shows from the Bible that omon did not believe In immortality the head and front of offending having been that Rev Moore had spoken doubtfully about there being any post mortem existence the Sun assuming the question to be so simple as that ought to be easily answered in tho affirmative by anybody who had sense enough to come In out of tho rain While it Is not much of a break for my Reverend good as that now being distributed by Andrew Carnegie for the establishment of public libraries Tho amount of money in the possess ion of this ono nan baffles hu mdn mind ourso Mr Carnegie never hlm s ttlfmied this gigantic fortune but through our grinding system of com mercialism it came into his possess sign How much human vitality am blood mingled tears are cpm pounded In every dollar of this to obtain dollars enough to supply their commonest necessities The Carnegie millions are now be ing converted into public libraries in Ahiei ica and Europe But there is one feature about the Carnegie UiSlrlcs that makes them at once a blessing and a burden to com s in which they are established lilt Carnegies money places tho library with books In the localities that have secured his munificent ben efactions and on each building Is placid a carved stone bearing the Inscription Carnegie library Where ever these Institutions are planted tho town or city Councils take on themselves to tax the people for the support of these libraries The people who pay tho taxes are not consulted in this matter and the Car negler uibrary tax Is added to the nu merous t and increasing assessments Mere y this channel Is but sparsely diffused The patrons of the librares are students ambitious young men and women professional mien and women and a large class of welltodo people who read for enter tainment and pastime This class Is composed largely of women who read fiction often of a type which destroys theft usefulness in life The leisure class devour works of fiction and these constitute a large majority of tho books of all these li braries The question presents Itself Is It right to tax the struggling poor to perpetuate these literary monu ments to Mr Carnegie If Mr Car negie had elected to nave devoted his wealth to the establishment of manual training schools or schools of technology a public tax to support such schools would not be so un just as such scools would fit techildren of the poor as well as rich to enter life with either a trade or scientific profession thus advanc ing the industral of the nation Many of those men who through toll helped to pour gold into Mr Car negies coffers are now taxed to perpetuate his memory as a benefactor The prodigal generosity and philan thropy of Americas steel king has ex cited the wonder and admiration of the world but tho taxing of poor people without their consent to main tain his princely benefactions is wrong and detracts from most gigantic educational scheme the world has ever seen One manual training school like that founded by Booker Washington is doing moro practical good to a anyonehunliredCarneglo laud Another wrong done to the public at largo Is tho refusal of these libraries to place upon their shelves the works of many of the worlds greatest thinkers and many of the CarnegieLibraryupon Its shelf the works of Robert Ingersoll who contributed more to elevate American literature and the world would soon get rid of the yoke of tho church The church feeds on ignorance and under the present economic system it pays the church to keep the mass es as ignorant as possible Any system I remain Yours truly AARON S GREEN AnswerYour letter is good and kind and gentlemanly and intelligent and it may be true that I would stand a better show to get mo 100000 readers for my paper if I would turn Socialist But the success of my pa per so far and tne reputation that I enjoy are mine because goo l and sen sable men and women believe I am what am purely from conviction that I am right Even if were willing therefore to be influenced by questions of policy and cpedlency Instead of principle it not only would be unfair to my old long tried friends but the most es teemed of them would at once discover it and desert mo on exactly tho same moral principle that made them stand by me So that whllo I than you for the financialyea and moralsupport of my paper and have a consuming longing for the 100000 readers for it any man at once excites my op position who says to me that if I will do thus and so it will be to tho material benefit of tho paper Having to this ago been ruled by principle I would feel that I had made shipwreck of my faith if in the sear and yellow leaf of gowned and slippered senility I should at last succumb to the allurements of policy- read in some print some where lately that Dr Wilson was an avow ed Socialist and it seems to me that Ao so inclines and possibly Mrs Hen ry ditto and so far as I am concern ed they are abundantly welcome to their views on that subject but I can not consent to putting a kibosh on Kidders ridicule of Socialism so how can anybody say my paper is not as much open to tho discussion of So cialism as any paper that is not en gaged in that speciality But so far as I individually am concerned I have been specially educated in theology annd that is what I know and Socialism I do not know and there is enough in theology to occupy tho time of any ono man and naturally and properly theology is my The Century Dictionarys dofinlUon4 tt I tJ of Socialism makes it a perfectly plausible and laudable thing until it comes to the words makes land and capital as the Instruments of produc tion the joint possession of the munity then tho idea gets not only Impracticable but unfair What I have Is In land what my friend J A Thomas the banker of Ryan Iowa has is in money and what Haggln Kocne and Harkncss have living in sight of me is in land and money the theo amounting to taking what we five people have and making It the joint possesslonof the community is sim ply talking about taking our property and dividing it up among people who have none absolutely regardless of whether these people deserve to have property- havo a neighbor young man a few yearsago had a handsome farm near me Ho did not have much sense at best and had no sense when he was drunk and his devoutly Chris tian guardian swindled him out of it allSocialism says Haggin must divide up his 00000000 with that drunken young fool I cant see it and am not going to worry myself and strain my bifocals trying to see it Haggln mado his money fairly as a copper miner I would not know him from a side of solo leather if I were to see him and he would not give a tinkers damn for me or I for him and I understand that he is an uncouth old cuss but if I had the power of the Czar of all the Russlas i would not make Haggin give that young drunken bummer a single nickel any more than I would to tho old fellow who within the limits of tho law robbed the young fellow There Is no good sense in saying tho church would have to go down if Socialism prevailed There would bo Just as much money in the world as there over was for the priests to get their claws on and why would the church go down If you mean to take our land and capital without giving us a full equivalent for It we being free and willing parties to the contract you mean robbery If you mean to take our land and capital by giving us a full cquivalant for them wo being free and willing parties to the con tract you are perfectly welcome to do that now and thero is therefore no use for Socialism- If you mean for tho government fairly to buy all the property of its citizens and then equally distribute it what you need is a writ do lunatico Inquirendoimay to a mans stomach tho most the most exemplary men I over know and largely as ex prcssivo of ouf appreciation of him my wife and I havo patronized him in his businessdry goodsnearly all of our married lives Ho was murdered in society was shot three times as lio ran bravely to tho defense of his parents and shot ono of the burglars so as to result in tho capture of both of them I This awful calamity ought to have its good effect upon our people but it will not They will go on just the same substituting religion for good sense and good morals From time immemorial tho Lexing ton races havo been a source of great demoralization but strangely though fortunately the interest in them had begun to flag when a young Epis copal preacher Dean Baker P Lee came to Lexington with all the af fection of English snobbery and Epis copacy and by his words and his money both trumpeted by the pers gave to horse racing hero such a new impetus as to make it a kind of annex of tho Episcopal church The only family of influence and wealth and culture in my neighbor hood who aro religious aro Episcopalians and both sexes of it attend tho races with no more thought of its moral impropriety than they feel going to Dean Lees cathedral- It is a perfectly hopeless undertak ing to reason with people who are thoroughly saturated with the Chris tian religion Just as hopeless as to reason with a Mohammedan about his many who in their practical lives aro good people just as wo havo among Infidels men who are bad people It would seem that plain common sense and tho same judgment that influence these peoplo in other affairs in life would teach them tho silliness of their religion but they go on from y tn1gran eratlotttngc n oration like the heathen in their blindness bow down to wood and stoneInnocent trusting children are taught to pray Now lay ino as they go to bed at night as a means of averting danger through the night and when they get a little older they take up Tho Lords prayer a part of which is was horribly murdered in the enemyIand soundly all night If a case like this were only an occasional thing there might be some excuse for Christians keeping up the superstition that they learned from read Mr Moore as you havo been a preacher yourself am going to ask you a question and see if you will answer it as other preachers do I was raised a Methodist and was a member of that church for about 20 years but as the churches call it fell from grace But the fall was light it never hurt me any but lieved mo of a burden I had carried all those 20 years I never did nor could feel what they call the power of the Spirit or realize the change of heart- I always felt the same It made no difference how much faith I had or how much I prayed would get so discouraged I would not know what to do and when I would ask the pas tor or older members about It they would Just say Pray on Sister pray onNow Mr Moore was it because I was not earnest enough or because there was nothing in it Well I have SUPREME COURT DECISION Lincoln Neb Oct 10The State Supreme Court has handed down a decision forbidding the reading in the public schools of the Bible or the slfiglng of such songs as Nearer My God to Thee The decision is Exercises by a teacher in a public school in a school building in school hours and in the presence of the pupils consisting of the reading of passages from the Bi ble and in the singing of songs and hymns and offering prayer to the Deity in accordance with the trines beliefs customs or usages of sectarian churches or religious or ganizations are forbidden by the constitution of the State The action was one brought by Daniel Freeman an Atheist who holds the honor of being the first homesteader in the United States Freeman maintained that the St James Bible is not a correct transla tion of the Scripture but was a vtsr slon specially made for the Church of England that it contains much that is unfit to read aloud and being a part of the Christian religion is therefore sectarian J H TJflrtftlo nrm 1 tr s a friend of the Court filed a brief in the case holding with Freeman as to the Blblo being the sacred book of the Protestants and as such repug nant to devotees of the Catholic faith In their written opinion the Judges say that it does not express their personal inclination but that the law prohibits anything that forms a part of the belief of sectarian denomina bravery of men and women when they are facing death This type ofI bravery Is admirable but what fills mo with tho greatest admiration Is the sublime courage and bravery dis played by humanity In facing lifeIWhen we approach death we are too sick or feeble to manifest true bravery and on the threshold of the Inevitable nothing Is left us but res ignation Beyond Infancy the stern realities of life haunt every human stepDeath Is not even a blow or a pul sation It Is a pause but life Is con filet and struggle Birth marriage and death are ttie three great epochs of human life Of all the teeming millions that have trod the pathway of life from birth to death perhaps not one could bo found who If sulted before birth would elect to be born Into this life of mystery with Its sufferings and sorrows Yet when we find ourselves in the valley of mys tery there is Innate In humanity a sublime courage which begets heroic effort On every human face is stamp ed an appealing inquiring express ton that bespeaks the Inward heart and brain struggle tho silent agony and dally slaughtered which tho head lines of our great dailies however strongly they may turn the Xrays on all phases of life do not record The unhistorlc heroes and heroines of the human family have fought Its most terrible battles and achieved greatest victories Every aim ambition and effort ol humanity is surrounded by a troop of difficulties and opponents yet the least object comfort or pleasure Is purchased with life blood brain strug gle or heart agony Humanity pays a high price for everything it has in life and this too In the face of the fact that all things are as per- Ishable as the blush of the rose and that every heart beat moves us on an 0 open grave which is tho portal to the shadow land of still deeper mys tery Think of the splendid courag of the earths children of poverty wh labor through the heat and burden o the day and seek comfortless homes at night only to gather strength for the labor of the morrow The hope less grind and drive to secure food and raiment for helpless children who in their turn take the places of those who have fallen In the strife roev tr Think of the responsibilities cares anxieties and fears that are rolled up oirtrWuldng world yet pursued t disappointments and discouragements I and discouragements with what splendid courage each days task duty is performed A wall of anguis- and bereavement rings round th earth as death claims loved ones yet graves are closed and humanit r staggering under its griefs takes u its load again and heroically fights on The stream of human misery is always at flood tide and marriage unrolls the lives of countless genera tions and launches them upon its raging billows Pope spoke the an Sa guish of his own heart when he said Man never is but always to be with sublime courage tha mistrof hopeless tears to catch one gleam from the star of hope that shines t above the unborn years Yet above the storm clouds that overhang earthly existence the theologian has unrolled the frightful doctrine of eter nal punishment the greatest crime that has ever been committed against the human race This doctrine con demns a large majority of the human r family to eternal torment in a lake of everlasting fire The good tid ings of the great Joy are offered to humanity In these words from Mathew i 2541 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his an gels He that belleveth and is baptized shall be SAVED and he that belleveth not shall be damned Believe what A man made con glomeration of dogmas that are an Insult to common intelligence and that trample on all the noblest in w stincts of the human heart All this is added to humanitys burden yet it has courage to labor and struggl- erS and dream of better condltons A multitude of faults and fallings are eclipsed by the splendid courage of the human heart which bespeaks still grander nobler attributes held at bay by the priest the politician and the plutocrat These enemies of t their kind are in the thickest of the conflict and although their gains are others losses their cares and fears are greater than those of their vie tims J Truly humanity displays a heart for any fate Yes tis courage when on billows Tossing mid the angry storm Helps us reach a height by tempest Never never reached by calm Then let us grasp the spar more firmly Letting Reason guide the sail rt Press the deck with footsteps braver And with patience bide the gale JOSEPHINE K HENRY Versailles Ky From Des Moines la News ALFONSO OF SPAIN Editor NowsJn a recent Issue of your paper a special Item from Len- don records tho disrespect shown to sacred relics by King Alfonso of Spain Among the relics were St iT Peters toenail and St Pauls hair and the King is said to have pronounced the belief In such things all nonsense For this expression Al fonsos mind is said to be unbalanced and that his throne may be totter- Ing The throne of Spain has been tottering for many years because the masses of the people are growing tired of being oppressed and beggared by priestly and monarchial des pots and parasites They have found by sad experience that belief in fu ture rewards does not fill the mouth of the starving In this world They look about them and perceive that knowledge of the present is the agent which advances other nations In stead of reverence for holy relics They are beginning to understand that with 75 per cent of Illiteracy among the people Spain cannot maintain her place among the na flans and they are malting a mighty effort to become free from the despotism of ignorance In turning the searchlight of the public press upon the many absurdities of socalled sa cred ceremonies they are madp to appear In their true light and as time passes Christendom will be Illumin ated with the wisdom which endures If tho throne of the future Spain is to be founded on St Peters toenail and St Pauls hair it will not only totter but collapse entirely King Alphonso seems to be a sen sible lad who might If given a chance retrieve the fallen fortune and tottering throne of Spain but he Is not to be given the opportunity since at the first sign of mental awak ening tho first expression of Ideas antagonistic to priestcraft the church resorts to inquisitorial methods anti pronouncees him insane If such a course does not have effect of quiet ling the precocious youngster he will be silenced by confinement anti forc ed to abdicate If Christendom could only realize that we do not want more meekness and subjection and belief but more selfreliance selfrespect and service for humanity a mighty im petus ould be given to progress HENRY In the Blade of September 21st E M 302 I published an article en titled Bible Inconsistencies In that article I mado the statement that the age of Methuselah was 969 years and that ho died a few years after the flood Of course the ques tion naturally presented Itself Where was Methuselah during the flood I am In receipt of several letters asking me to tell where in the Bible it is said that Methuselah died after the flood In answering this question I have consulted one of the ablest theologians in this country and this is my replyThere Is no one passage in the Bible that says that Methuselah was born before the flood and that he lived until after tho flood and yet the Bible according to the chronology of Bishop Usher the only chronology accepted by the Catholics and Protes tants this chronology being the one that is printed in all Bibles that print dates at the heads of pages states that Methuselah was born 781 before the flood and lived until 188 years after the flood to mako his 969 years The learned theologian whom I have consulted Is of the opinion that Bishop Usher obtained his chronology by counting the ages of the people from Adam to Methuselah at the time their first sons daughters not count ed were born and then adding them togetherIn 525 the birth of Methu selah is recorded and the date of his birth is indicated at the top of the page upon which his birth is record ed is 3130 B C In Genesis 71 the announcemnt is made of Noahs going into the ark and the date at the top of this page is 2349 B C that is Methuselah was 781 years old when tho flood came and had to live 188 years after the flood to complete his 969 years This is Indeed a momentous subject and I desire to be as correct as cir cumstances will permit in treating it As I was not present at the birth of Mr Methuselah I cannot be absolute ly certain as to his birthday I would not cast a single reflection on his memory by making him out older than he was Dear old fellow If he staid in this weary old world years more or less he must have passed through enough to now leave his world wide reputation for being the oldest man undisturbed If as wanv ed character was on tho earth Jor some where else outside of the ark during the flood he had his own troubles and ho richly earned the honorable place he occupies in Bi ble history Methusela must have been more truthful than people are nowadays to have told his age Per haps he realized that he had never done anything except grow old to send his name down through the cen Curios and if WE should live long enough any of us could do that am not at all certain that Mr Methuselah was born 3130 B C and do not know what month or the day of the month he was born I am not certain that Methuselah was 781 years old when Noah enter ed the ark and I am not certain that he lived 188 years after the flood To be candid with my enquiring cor respondents I do not believe there ever wart a flood like that described In the BIble I do not believe there ever was a Noah or an ark and I do not believe Mr Methuselah was ever born at all If he WAS and enjoyed good health and bad health for 969 years surely up must have been appalled at the Bible command Ye must be born again DOCTOR Who Is Afraid to Let His Name Be Known as a Friend to the Blade Ala Oct 02 glue Grass Blade DearSlrI send you 20 cents In stamps for which you will
