SENTIMENT AROUStw BY EFFORTS OF INFIDELS Editor of Blue Grass Blade and Oth thers Attempt to Make It Appear Newton Man Is a Rellg luos Martyr Special the Capital Newton Iowa August 13Sentt ment here has teen aroused within the past few weeks for fear that Governor Cummins may pardon or parole Dr Marian R Hammer sent up from here some months ago for an assault with attempt to commit murder upon the person of Oscar Heathcote The case Is well known it having attract ed attention throughout the state at the time Tne movement for the re lease of Dr Hammer from Fort Mad ison penitentiary has been started by Charles Moore editor of the Blue Orass Blade the official organ of Infi delity In this country published at Lexington Ky Moore It has been learned from reliable sources has taken up the case with mo governor and Is pushing it with all his might His motive so far as can ho ascertained is that of ono believer In infidelity to another for Dr Hammer was a personal friend of Mr Moore and at one time one of the circulators of the Blue Grass Blade In this part of the country Once when Mr Moore two years ago appeared in this city to make a speech he was entertained at the home of Dr Hammer and the friend ship df the two men formed then has never been broken Mr Moore has aroused much Inter est In the case of Dr Hammer throughout by publishing In his paper a story which places Dr Hammer in too light of a martyred hero held under custody In the Iowa penitentiary as the result of persecutions arising because he is a nonbeliever So much Interest has been aroused in favor of Dr Hammer that It has been learned here that scores of names are being sent In to the governor dally attacheu to blanks which Mr Aoore Inserts In his paper with every Issue Along with this knowledge it has been learne that the names sent in to the governors office have with but nine exceptions been those of parties living entirely outside of the State of lostn They are signed by citizens w York St te Florida Mlnneso Un Pjcky One of the persons Iner ested In the case is a man named Jos hua T Small residing at Province town Mass where he runs a small bakery and poses as a representative of the school of natural healers His letter to the governor It is learned was accompanied by a lanatlcal cir tjcular designed to cast reflection on practice of medicine Mr Moore of the Blue Grass Blade claims wonderful things for himself He admits that he has been In the penitentiary once In the state of Ohio but claims ho was here through persecution similar to that of Dr Ham mer and that he was pardoned by President McKimey before he haw serve one year of ins term of live years Ho claims hat he Is the grand son of Barton W Stone one of the founders of the religion what is known as the Church of Christ and that he was ordained to preach for that de- nominatIOn by Alexander Campbell During his ministry he claims he converted an Ins tlei to his faith and baptized him and then in turn was converted by the Infidel He Is a staunch admirer of Mary Mac Lane the Montana girl who has recently come before the public as a writer of her inmost thoughts and feelings Mr Moore in his paper recently takes the stand that In Mary Mac Lane he has found his Ideal woman that she stands for all that Is the highest and best in womankind Mr Moore did not create a very pleasing impression In this city when he was here two years ago and the people generally are very much disturbed now for fear he may be instrumental in bringing about the pardon of Dr hammer Henry Sllwood the county attorney there is making a strong effort against the pardon and hopes to make such a showing to the governor as to preclude any possibility of Ham mers release Dr Hammer It will be remembered made the assault of which he was convicted after Oscar Heathcote his victim had appeared before the grand Jury here against the defendants son They met the street September 22 1900 andI after some words Dr Hammer drew a knife and assaulted Heathcote who was not so badly wounded but that he recovered Dr Hammer was de fended by E J Salmon of this city and McHenry McHenry of Des case was tried In Poweshlek county before Judge Bishop It was appealed by the defendant on the ground that the judge left the room Willie the trial was proceeding The state argued that It had been agreed that Judge Bishop should retire and prepare his instructions and that he did nothing out of the way in leaving the court room during the trial The supreme court upheld this contention of the state and Dr Hammer was sent to Fort Madison last April after his case had been decided by the higher court- teolJe here are of the opinion that Dr Hammers sentence of three and onehalf years was comparatively light one and they do not favor his release at this time There is another r indictment It is said ready for him if he is released It Is alleged that t lu recent ears he drew a revolver on several prominent men here threatened to stab others and that ho once spit In the face of a prominent man besides calling several leading citizens the vilest names These things have conspired to create the sentiment against Dr Hammer Among the mon who are said to have been threatened and abused by DrI Hammer are Drs C C Smeatf Perry Engle B M Fallor and exKsnator Gorrell It Is also charged by persons hereI that the letter which appeared In theI Blue Grass Blade In behalf of Dr Hammer some months ago was writ ten by Dr Hammer himself and not by the editor of the paper Although it Is not known what the governors decision in the case will be the ef forts to avert the pardon will bo con tinned It is possible that a petition from the leading citizens here protesting against such action will be sent to the chief executive In the near future- Inquiry at the governors office hasI confirmed the facts stated above as to the case of Dr Hammer being tak en up by the editor of the Blue Grass Blade The statement that all of the persons seeking the pardon are living outside the state except nine is also confirmed The governors pardon sec retary states that no action has been taken in the case and until such is done he does not care to discuss the attitude of the governor upon the sub jectCommentI submit this account as a sample of Christian injustice in their dealing wits Infidels Accompanying the newspaper ex tract was giving the name of the writer That the man who wrote It knows nothing about the facts in the case is evident from the fact rat he three times gives the name of Oscar Wheat craft as Heatncote a name unlike Wheatcraft when the name Wheat craft is quite familiar to any man of ordinary intelligence living In New tonIt is almost Impossible that any man of Intelligence enough to read and wriiw cpuinu t t i rr tvu single week any time since Dr Ham titers arrest and not be familiar with the name Wheatcraft Why Is there anyifear that Gov Cummins will pardon or parole Dr Hammer unless there is reason to suppose he ought to be pardoned or paroleu Is Gov Cummins a man who is liaule to pardon or parole a man without reason fr Itl It thought he was that kind of a man would hat e less hope for Dr hell do I care- I have seen the day when wished the whole state of Iowa was in hell but because am an Infidel and a mor alist whose pride is that havo giv en and am giving my whole life and fortune to are publishing through one of their big dailies at their capital that Ham mer Is a man who entertained at his house the editor of the official or gan of Infidelity m this country Certainly any man of common intel ligence will say teat if they are work ing this game to keep Hammer in the penitentiary they probably work ed It to put him In the penitentiary This account says Moore it has been learned from reliable sources has taken up tho case with the cloy ernor and Is pushing It vKi all his ought This use of the words reliable sources Is a constructive misrepresentation intended to give out the That special Is dated Augusta as you will see In Secretary Garretts letter of August to Mr A A Snow he Gar rett says the remarkable fact Is that up to the receipt of the petition sent by you only four equal rights and privileges and after reading several of the articles I was fully convinced that equal rights and privileges were being sustained by a Iteedavery frail one The paper Is aping the Iconoclast and Its founder giving a poor Imlta- tion of the Brava brand of brains Its editor hasnt sense enough to know the novelty of word chawing has worn off and Imagines that the man ho has hired to shako words out of the dictionary like a dog shakes squeaks out of a rat Is an expert of tho Brann type and that he can begin whore Brann left off and make a great name and success The facts are that for his own glory and reputation Brann was killed Just at the right time The nov andIsentences to take tho place of slm plo words In common use had begun to wear oft and had ho lived much longer he would have disgusted and wearied everyone There was some originality and In dividuality In Brann but In Arm strong there is absolutely none He Is tho shoddiest kind of an Imita tion To be fair with him I dragged out several copies of the Iconoclast and read one of Branns articles and then one of Armstrongs and It was like drinking sklm milk tainted with the crock The first article In this number of the Isonomy was a news item of the raiding of an opium Joint In San Antonio and running Its owners out of townA page Is given to this small matter of Interest and the Joint and and the evils of opium are pictured In the most extravagant metaphor and Jawbreaking phrases and words Here are some of themlethl ferous fascination invidious Imlta tion scortatory and sidereal sugglllated with a flail of copper hebetated memories marabous flaneurs gutter snipes and enelr odnla The next article headed A Brace of Nefarious Hell Ilounds which Is another news item describing the cru cifixion of a nary common sense Theres that something about It that smacks of tho simpleton who In variably endeavors to appear smarter than other people by performing llt tlesenseless tricks and attempting to l say funny things Any one can begin with tho letter A In the dictionary and pick out a lot of uncommon and unheardof words having a plain common mean Ing and so keep stock on hand to wedge Into his composition It Is pos sible for a fool to be expert In such Interchange of words In fact It is Just wnat a fool would delight most in doing imagining that by the use of words not common or necessary to the speech of educated people he will appear exceptional and smart There is nothing smart bright or exceptional In this fad If It in any way tended to strengthen or adorn speech orators novelists historians humorists essayists editors and re porters would long a go have drop ped on to the style But syntax has Its degenerates as well as other things and Reeds Isonomy has bagged a few of them r an Indigestion of factsSeverance who is one of the clear est and most forcible and logical In tho countrya man devot fed to principle makes a mistake In answering any argument or position i i assumed by Armstrong or any other editor of Isonomy That is what those outcasts of principle most sireto be noticed Every notice giv en them is a free advertisement Like Brann they are totally devoid of principle or any positive opinion They want to be argued with and they are on any side that will bring them no toriety and patrons- Freethought editors by noticing them only direct attention to theta twisting has became an ancient toyArmstrong tried to Imitate Brann whllo he waS living with tho Auton- omist and Hurt tried it with the Gatling Gun and both flickered out Isonomy already Is reeking MOORS THE BIBLE AS A TEXT BOOK IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS BY JOSEPHINE K HENRY The following resolution adopted by the National Education Association cently held at Minneapolis is being widely commented on by the press The resolution reads as blows It Is apparent that familiarity with the English Bible as a masterpiece of literature is rapidly decreasing among the pupils in our schools This Is the direct result of a conception which regards the Bible as a theological hook merely and thereby leads to Us exclusion from the schools of some states as a subject of reading and stud- We hope and ask for such a change e of public sentiment in this regard as will permit and encourage the En r gush Bible now honored by name In c many school laws and State Constitu dons to be read and studied as a lit erary work of the highest and purest type side by side with the poetr and prose which it has Inspired and In large part formed Since the reading of the Bible In the public schools with the view of bring ing the pupils to what is called con version and promoting morality has It Is nowproven a complete failure proposed that the Book that has been claimed as the Word of God Is to be reduced to a masterpiece of literature to be placed along side the models in literature of the centuries This resolution strikes a terrible blow at the Inerrant Bible as the Word of God and sets aside its vine Author as a law giver and places Him In company wlh the liter ati From a religious point of view It seems to me that this resolution Is not only irreverent but blasphemous It has always been the religionists that clamored for Bible reading in our public schools but if they cannot have It read as a religious guide they are now willing to have It considered as mere literature The Bible has reached Its present position because it has been taught and insisted upon that it Is Gods Word and until the human mind produced fine types of literature the Bible was never thought of as a liter ary gem To teach the Bible in the public schools to educate In literature elim inates its Divine Authorship and Is f the most revolutionary proposition in of Christianity harbeen i the Word of God it could never have reached or maintained Its place i lh literatureIn type of model litera ture In ancient or modern language can there be found such a meaning less jargon of words or so much cruelty and obscenity There are Us many literary gems scattered through its pages but they are as scarce as pearls in the oyster or diamonds In the mine To have suggested a few years ago to place the Bible alongside of Shakespeare and Milton would have aroused the religious world but now they will consider It a victory to have It placed In this list in our public schools Was the National Educational As sociation in DEAD earnest In this resolution and does it desire that the pupils shall read the bible chapter by chapter to elevate the literary taste of the American people Are our pub school teachers qualified to teach yliemeaning and elucidate the literary excellence of the Bible has been the lireorand of the centuriesI whose interpretation has deluged the earth with blood we think it is ask ing too much of these overworked Illy paid public servants The public schools are already overloaded with studies at the expense of the health and confusion of the minus of chil and girls can recognize dem OIstrated facts but they cannot rec cgntze the fine points of the best lit erature It takes a studious and ma turn mind to do this The Bible has been read as a moral guide in the schools of America since its settlement and the religious status of the United States demonstrates how slight an linpreslon It has made The Bible Is peculiarly the property of re ligionists and as long as we live un der our present Constitution no re ligious bunk has any right In our Echool system supported by public mathematics taught In our lIc schools teach that iiree times one are three but the religionists trinity taught that by the Bible teaches that three Imes one are one Here we have a conflict between mathematics and literature and facts and belief i The teaching and preaching of the Bible In the Churches which is per slstent and constant has not elevated our national literature Even the ser mons to the most cultured congrega tions make so slight an Impress on mature minds that few remember the text or its application beyond me church door and tnis Is particularly emphasized by the study of the Bible in schoolsTo that a knowledge of the Bible is necessary to tile production of the highest types of literature Is absurd The Grecians and Romans bad no Bible to guide them to liter ary excellence and yet the modern world has never transcended these In its literature Herodotus the Greek historian Homer tao Greek poet Virgil the oman poet Horace the lyric poetn iacitus the Roman historian or Cicero the orator Indeed It is doubtful 1f modern literature has ever equalled them It is true that the iniluence of the Bible permeates modern literature from Chaucer to Ingereoll but this Is because It has been proclaimed as Gods Book and NOT because it IsI It hasp literary masterpiece lifted to its present position solely for the reason that It Is believed by many to be the one and only book which God wrote for the eternal guid ance of man and the masses In Chris tendons have been mentally fed on this book while ey havo been total ly ignorant of the best literature of any ago of the world Only par times of the Bible have been selected for this purpose The brutalities butcheries debaucheries and obscen ties with which the Book abounds are not used as texts to teach either tile young or the old hut they lie dewed motheaten and silent between the lids of the voluminous volume We fall to see how a study of all these things could elevate the liter attire of the future The stories of Abraham Jacob Noah Judah and Tamar David Samson Songs of Sot oman Absalom Ammon and a host of others In both the Old and New Tes taments may be considered by someI the cream of literature but their moral influence on the bright and questioning minds in the public schools of the United States in this the Twentieth Century is questionable Indeed For instance the 34th Chapter of Genesis alone contains debaucher female commodity lying murder theft hypocrisy and cowardice and there are a number of chapters den with all the villainies ever con ceived In the minds of the most de graded and savage people How all this that Is in the Bible in glaring print after all Its revisions Is to vate our literature is not easy to see If our modern literature contained a hint of brutality debauchery and obscenity It could not find a publisher and would be at once rejected by reading public To Insist that the most enlightened nation of the Twen tieth Century should seek Its literary model In a history of a nation of bar barians who lived thousands of years ago Is extremely absurd More facts excellent literary style polished language beautiful metaphor elegant diction charming similitude lofty iueals robust morality passion ate appeal to all that is nobles in humanity woven into literary mo sales unsurpassed in any age can be gleaned from one reading of he Dres den edition of Ingersolls works than from a life time study of the Bible If for no other reason the Bible should he barred from the puuic schools because of Its estimate of man The Bible position of woman has retarded the progress of the human race a thousand years Since woman herself is bursting her bonds forged by superstition the effect of the broad ening of womens minds Is manifested in the intelligent faces and bright minds of the children In our public schools The advocates of Bible study in our schools seem unaware that Increasing intelligence robs this of Its authority and the fact that they want It now accepted as literature and not as a revelation is a fatal stab at their cherished Ideal All a stuuious mind has to do to Judge of tholiterary merit and moral Influence of the Bible is to put on a thinking cap and read It if the Bible is the Word of God it has no place in an educational system that teaches only facts and has notHing whatever to do wit religious beliefs and If it is merely a literary production n the wide range of tine literature from Shakespeare to In gersol much better text books for our public schools can be selected The Cauioics Jews and Rationalists are a mighty host in the United States and they are all taxed to sup port our public schools and this at tempt to introduce the Bible as a text hook in these public schools tramples on their rights and will stir up no end of strife This resolution passed uy the Na tional Educational Association was introduced by Dr Nicholas Murray Butler t resident of the Columbia Unl versity and It will be a bomb thrown Into our educational system The true American spirit seems entirely absent in this noted educator as it was long ago decided that the study of the Bible should be left entirely to ue hurch the Sunday School and the Christian home and Dr Butler could no donut be more successful as President of a theological school than at the head of a great American university We are face to face now with the question as to whether the Bible shall become a literary text book In our public scnools Let U now be finally settled Versailles CAUGHT NAPPING Sent to Jail for Taking a Nap In Church New York Aug Marguerette Burnett is in jail because of a sleep she took in a
