It seems to he Incontrovertible that there has been for many years a relig lOlls declension In the United States This declension has covered both faith and practice The leading doctrines of religion have been assailed and the ligious life has been relaxed use the word religion because everything In the nature of religion as well as Christianity has suffered from this movement of the human mind This declension is evidenced by the decreased membership of the churches by the theological writings of the day by the looseness of much of the preach lug by the weakness of religious socle ties by the desuetude of powerful vivals by the paucity of conversions and by the reduced number of cam dates for the ministry- It Is somewhat alarming to read some of the statements for which of course I cannot vouch regarding tho fewness of tho conversions If am correctly Informed there are In the Presbyterian Congregational and Baptist denomina tions thousands of churches every year which do not report a single conversion anti as many more perhaps which re port only one or two conversions This led Mr Moody on one occasion to query whether the Congregationalists really believed In conversion at nil or not In like manner the complaint comes from nearly all the theological seminaries that fewer young men are entering the ministry and that those who enter are of a lower grade of scholarship than formerly This Is on the face of Itsan alarming symptom but it is to this discount that the lay preacher Is rapidly displacing the pro fessional minister and for my part If rk the people find that the last Issue of the Blade your reference to the discussion between ander Campbell and Robert Owen some 75 years ago as being weak on both sides I was Interested In this because having read the debate over 25 years ago while yet in the orthodox fold I was Impressed quite differently Iron yourself as to itS merits ABai tlst admirer of Campbell who regarded him as the greatest debater In defense of Christianity of any age loaned me the debate to show with what ease Campbell had annihilated Owen and his Infidelity read It but did not see It that way though was at the time as orthodox as himself One point In particular I well remember Owen declared that belief in no case depended upon the will but was determined by Influences over which we had no control that this being true logically we should be neither praised nor punished it beings independent of our will as our statue or the color of our eyes or hair If true this of course was fatal to Christianity which has always rewarded belief with the promise of heaven and threatened unbelief with the flames of hell Campbell would not admit Its truth whereupon Owen offered to rest his entire case upon that one proposition and would admit defeat If Campbell could produce one Instance where belief depended upon will and offered to retire from the platform If by an et tort of the will he Campbell could for five minutes believe Jesus an im postor and Mahomet a true prophet This may have been weak but tho flounderings of Campbell In his deavor to squirm out of the difficulty was pitiable in the extreme He t utterly in meeting the Issue and did not cite a single case In support of his contention but reported to eva sion and subterfuge Tbo reading of that debate started me on a line of Investigation and in quiry that has culminated in robust and outspoken infidelity and In y reading from that time to the present met with any writewhotheological had the honesty and courage totoe the scratch and grapple fairly with
