at some length his impressions of the wondrous beauty and phenomenal achievements of Christian teaching He states that all the Infidel organzatlons since creation never founded a hospital a home for the homeless etc It Brother Harris would consult our public schools references he would find that homes for the aged existed long fore the Christian era An article July 182 In Nlneteeenth Century says The first hospitals for diseased people were established by the Buddhists of India and It Is a well known fact that the Buddhists also maintained hospitals for animals According to the Westminster Review a Buddhist monarch Azoka 400 C ordered hospitals built in every town Gibbon tells us that In the Roman empire a fund was maintained to pur chase food for the poor A great many hospitals for the sick and Insane wereI maintained by the Saracens but stantine the brutal founder of Christi anity suppressed tnem together with the medical school which supported them and the people depended upon prayer miraculous Intervention exor tclams torture or death to cure the In sanetlta latter a most effectual cute An account of this Is given In Drapers Intellectual Development of Europe It Is a significant fact that not until the sixteenth century were Insane hospitals again established In Europe and patients treated as diseased Bancroft In Native Races of the cific Coast says Hospitals were es tablished by the government In all the higher cities of Mexico with ample enues where patients from the surrounding country were cared for The same Is recorded by Prescott In his Conquest of Mexico Dr Senn during a recent tour of Ja pan the nation which sent represent atlves to Europe to study Christianity with a view to adopting It If It met the Ideal ot our Island brothers but who re turned to their native land with the report that the moral degeneracy ot the people did not warrant them In recommending Chrlslanlty saId am Im pressed with the Japanese red cross ciety the greatest and richest Institutions were Unlawful and etJch bequests were contlscated as were the estate of heretics during th Inquisition However there are vari ous benevolent Institutions to the credit of unbelievers and their gifts for edu icatlonal purposes are legion and the nuuimental contributions of literature by Irifiilels like Darwin Huraboldt Huxle rSpencer and hundreds of others wliranctire when Christianity THINKS RELIGION IS GRADUALLY DECLINING 1 Famous Evangelist Says the Spirit of Skepticism Is Prevailing Among Protestants Catholics and Jews Alike Fewer Conversions Are Noted Men of Lower Grade of Scholarship Are Entering the Evan gelical Ministry So states the Rev Campbell Mor gan the brilliant English preacher who succeded D L Moody In the Northflelil extension work 4 f RELIGIOUS DECLENSION It seems to he Incontrovertible that there has been for many years a relig lOlls declension In the United States This declension has covered both faith and practice The leading doctrines of religion have been assailed and the ligious life has been relaxed use the word religion because everything In the nature of religion as well as Christianity has suffered from this movement of the human mind This declension is evidenced by the decreased membership of the churches by the theological writings of the day by the looseness of much of the preach lug by the weakness of religious socle ties by the desuetude of powerful vivals by the paucity of conversions and by the reduced number of cam dates for the ministry- It Is somewhat alarming to read some of the statements for which of course I cannot vouch regarding tho fewness of tho conversions If am correctly Informed there are In the Presbyterian Congregational and Baptist denomina tions thousands of churches every year which do not report a single conversion anti as many more perhaps which re port only one or two conversions This led Mr Moody on one occasion to query whether the Congregationalists really believed In conversion at nil or not In like manner the complaint comes from nearly all the theological seminaries that fewer young men are entering the ministry and that those who enter are of a lower grade of scholarship than formerly This Is on the face of Itsan alarming symptom but it is to this discount that the lay preacher Is rapidly displacing the pro fessional minister and for my part If rk the people find that the professional minister no longer meets their spiritual needs and that the comparatively uneducated lay preacher feeds their soul have no complaint to make of the ALL RELIGIONS t Indifference to the tliclaimsProtestant denominations Church If I mistake not feels the pressure of the movement fully as much I read not manyas we do think months ago a statement that Arch bishop Ireland Ina sermon he preached In New York made the statement that there was then going on in the world Including the Catholic Church a rapidly Increasing declension In religion In deed If may rely on what has been told me in Chicago the decline is not even confined to the Christian religion The Rev Dr Hirsch I am Informed said a year or two ago that his society was the only Jewish society In this country that was holding Its own Here then we have a movement which Is rected not against the Protestant re ligion nor yet against Christianity in general but against all religion in the broadest sense Within the Protestant denominations the battle rages around the person of Christ and the heretical doctrine mostly In evidence Is what Is called Rltseh llanlsm This baleful perversion of Christian doctrine Is traceable to the learned German theologian Albrecht Rltschl who has thoroughly Inoculated Christian theology In Great Britain and America Rltschl claims In the first place that there is no Christian revelation except In the words of Jesus Christ himself His next claim Is that the words of Christ even are not reliable except as given In the gospels and that though Christ has spoken in the epistles of Paul and In the Book of Revelations those writings are to be disregarded But as soon qs he has limited revelation to the words of Jesus In the gos pels he proceeds to claim that these words teach none of the cardinal trines of the Christian religion as now held by orthodox theologians He finds In the words of Christ no hint at his preexistence In heaven at his miracu ions birth at his deity or at his atone ment for sin This of course Is a per feet negation of Christianity and the only wonder Is that such a circuitous method should be taken to repudiate the whole Bible and the entire Christian system TAINT Or RITSCHLIANISM I should do the Christian Church in America the greatest Injustice If should represent It as having embraced Rltschllaniam to any great extent I have outlined the heresy simply to In dicate the direction which the doctrinal defection In this country as In Great Britain has taken Many preachers however show the taint of Rltschliau Ism In their preaching who have Im bibed It they know not how and have never even heard of Rltschl The very unlversatllity of this movement shows that It Is the product of universal conditions and that It Is no specifically a rational rejection of Chris Uanlty It Is very largely mere Indlffer entlsm anti the wandering of the heart from God and that convinces me that although Christianity has always through the progressed by cycles and has seen a dozen darker periods of unbelief than this the present indiffer ence is largely the result of the unex ampled activity of the human mind In directions such as Invention ellheany form has been out of Its mind It Is a far agreeable thing for me Jl 1 l 1 y t JJ to state what I regard as the certain outcome of the depression of the last few years The tide has unquestionably turned In fact It turned several years ago In my country But In America also there Is certainly visible now the beginnings of the Inevitable reaction As for me have nothing to complain of for wherever have been the deep Interest manifest In the word of God and In the doctrines of the gospel has been most admirable anti encouraging Let me give you a proof from another office of newsIImpelbeen kept for several months of the number of conversions that have been ChurchIeRmonths Is more than double the numI ben reported for the same months of last year So that I am persuaded that the night- Is far spent and the day close at hand should not be surprised If a world wide religious awakening not a whit inferior to the Moody revival should burst upon somewhat suddenly with in a year or two In the fire of such a blessing the prevailing heretical system will be consumed like a house of cardboard Under the Influence or the Holy Spirit error will be In a moment de tested and Christ will he all and in all again Comment The most astonishing thing In the above discussion Is Rev Morgans frank confession of Christian dlctrlne his ability to observe every cause hut the right one and the one most evident of allthat is peopleI dont cant and wont believe In Christian mystery or that preachers know one little bit more about God or the Future than the most ignorant savage on earth No thinking person can be liove It and that Is all there Is to and all the rest of his talk Is lame apol ogy and excuse lIe counsels his floclJiby asylng that lie thinks the tide Is turning again to ward Christianity and tells of the many new conversions to the Congregational Church He says nothing however about the lapses He Is looking for it to come to pass in a year or two that a great religious awakening will hurst upon the world and consume the heret- Ical system like cardboard Preachers are always looking for an outpouring of the spirit in a year or two hut why should the spirit delay the outpour so long Last week the great Lane Seminary Presbyterian of Cincinnati graduated only six young preachers When they can t get young men to take up the ministry and only poor the last Issue of the Blade your reference to the discussion between ander Campbell and Robert Owen some 75 years ago as being weak on both sides I was Interested In this because having read the debate over 25 years ago while yet in the orthodox fold I was Impressed quite differently Iron yourself as to itS merits ABai tlst admirer of Campbell who regarded him as the greatest debater In defense of Christianity of any age loaned me the debate to show with what ease Campbell had annihilated Owen and his Infidelity read It but did not see It that way though was at the time as orthodox as himself One point In particular I well remember Owen declared that belief in no case depended upon the will but was determined by Influences over which we had no control that this being true logically we should be neither praised nor punished it beings independent of our will as our statue or the color of our eyes or hair If true this of course was fatal to Christianity which has always rewarded belief with the promise of heaven and threatened unbelief with the flames of hell Campbell would not admit Its truth whereupon Owen offered to rest his entire case upon that one proposition and would admit defeat If Campbell could produce one Instance where belief depended upon will and offered to retire from the platform If by an et tort of the will he Campbell could for five minutes believe Jesus an im postor and Mahomet a true prophet This may have been weak but tho flounderings of Campbell In his deavor to squirm out of the difficulty was pitiable in the extreme He t utterly in meeting the Issue and did not cite a single case In support of his contention but reported to eva sion and subterfuge Tbo reading of that debate started me on a line of Investigation and in quiry that has culminated in robust and outspoken infidelity and In y reading from that time to the present met with any writewhotheological had the honesty and courage totoe the scratch and grapple fairly with
