First Presbyterian church that puts a hireling at the head of a Sundayschool to let them absorb his liquor traffic ideas i iJ the name of religion Bro JeW aside from his busi ness is a nice man and so is Col Pepper and for that matter so was Jesse James But I would forty to one rather see Col per in the pulpit of the First Presbyterian church and a man at the head of the Sundayschoolwho by precept and example would teach the boys of Lexington the danger of whisky than to have it as jt is now If Col Pepper were in the pulpit there would not be any hypocrisy in him and the people he would talk to would be oldenough to look out for them boysjustimpression on them The literary genius that has made me a bloated bond holder as editor of the Blade came very near being diverted in my early cuttingboxesMy first Sundayschool teacher made cutting boxes That First Presbyterian church with a distillery superintendent at the head of its Sundayschool is a worse institution than Col Pep distilleryThe does its business open and above board It deals 1il full grown men and nobody is fooled by it Col Pepper in his late published letter about his brother has been candid enough to intimate xo us pretty plainly that he is too smart to drink his own whisky Bro Pew however its an honest man can not lure to teach the boys in his Sundayschool that they ought not to drink whisky lie has no right to take Col Peppers money for mductiug his distillery and then try to breakdown the Colonels business un derhandedly by teaching the boys that they utt not to drink the Colonels whisky And I will bet he would not dare to teach tho- serhlsi that they oughi not to drink anybodys whisky It would take a cheek Ijke a government mule for him to do so and Col Pepper ought to fire him ns high as a roc et it Bro Pew says a word against whisky drinking If Bro Pew is a consistent man and a loud prayer he ought in his closet and publicly to ask God to help him to make good whisky anda heap of it and help Bro Pepper to sell it No Christian man ought to git his living at the hands of another roan unless he is willing to ask God to bless that man in his business It is sad to think how the youths of our land are being systematically educated in whisky drinking but so far as the churches are concerned I do not care a snap for them It these inebriate asylums they put whisky in everything that a man eats and drinks until he gets tired of the smell ofwhisky I want it that way in Lexington Its in politics and religion and I dont care if they set a barrel of whisky on the communion tables every except I can not make claim that I have gone back but I do know by the step I have taken that I have gone ahead So I believe you can and do sec that instead 01oJr having gone back you have taken a long step ahead The attitude of the socalled Christian church to the liquor license party should be a suffi cient cause for every Prohibitionist to seveI his connection with the church and to educate and urge every person to never enter its fold I couldnot be reconciled in my conscience while I remained in the church after I saw how com pletely subservient it was to the liquor license party To remain in that organization and give it my moral and material support was an endorsement of its attitude to the gigantic crime of crimes besides I saw that Iwas clearly to that extent ofmy ability and counccionperpettlaing- that curse which I was laboring to suppress I know Iam often told by some who are superficial inc thought and investigation that I could have held m relation with the church and yetbe free from the responsibility what others of the members and that I ought to stay in the churchand help purify it etc Christ had such logic presented to him but he said he must build anew from the foundation and that to have gone into the Jewish churchwould have involved him in the Bins of that church and the perpetuations thereof Did you ever think the result if every Prohibition man and would be followed by a progress to the Prohibition party such as has not been seen since its organization I believe we will make but little progress in many ears unless we go forward from the church resolutions against the liquor traffic and the very people who draft the resolutions intend at the time to vote for liquorIt a very easy matter to demonstrate that the church is the enemyof Prohibition There are 5200000churche member voters in the United States andonly 250000all total who vote for Prohibitions and all the rest vote against it In other words when one churchmember votes against the liquor traffic there are twontI church members who vote When a man gives twentyone cents to the church twenty cents of it go to keeping up the liquor traffic and one cent goes toward it down A Prohibitionist who gives anything to the support of the church furnishes a stick to break hs own head If you do not think this is a one sided transaction just try the experiment of asking any church to raise money to help the Prohibition party They will raise money to build fine churches and pay big salaries to fancy preachers and buy them gold headed canes andwatches or to send them to the sea shore or Europe or Palestine or the devil but you ask anyone of your churches to make an aproppriation to assist the Prohibition party to save the women andchildren from all the horrors of the liquor traffic and they will laughat you If the Prohibitionists in every state would give no more to any church and give all to the Prohibition party that they have been giving to the churches we would ampleipurposes and if anything would bring the churcher to their senses that would 1 believe another irrepressible conflict has begun and that it willend in war just like the slavery question did Slavery was no infamy at all compared with the liquor traffic It onlen slaved the bodies of men and women and children but it had many redeeming features But therois not one single pali ating future in the liquor traffic numeriIltosubmit to the liquor powers ut when the Prohibi 8 tionists get stronger in certain lo cali ties they may resist by force the locating of saloons in their midst which have gotten their licenses and it will begin like the war against slavery did in Kansas and at Harpers Ferry Wives and mothers and sisters will incite men to arms to save their husbands aril sons and brothers The country is fullof good woman who are outraged and indignant beyond expression at the contemptiblecowardice of the men who encourage the liquor traffic Women lead the men in the French Revolution and twice lately in Missouri the women have marched on saloons and but tered down their doorswith axes and destroyed their contents and fixtures and the courts didnot punish them They will do it again some bigbullshoot some of them and then we will have it The decent people will be brought to their senses and saloonkeepers will have to get away And when once the goforasthey did for the old JBastile I hope there will never he a liquorrimyanother war would be better than what we now have The four years of war that did away with slavery were better than slavery and the brewers and distillers for such service Give the devil his due but whywhite wash an infidel because he is an infidelI this for information I have never studied his career an never read his writings which seem too loose and inconsequent to be worth reading Still Iup preciate his great service to the church in exposing shams and ad mire his courage Bnt as to his being a good man I didnotsup pose he ever pretended to be or would thank any one for attribu ting any such exaltation of char acter to him I am glad you are ready to put the great Nazarene above him but honestly now Bro Moore are there not 10000 better men than Ingersoll in America I am quite honest and unpreju diced in my enquiries If your eulogy is correct I have always greatly undervalued him I always supposed him to be a selfis worldy man not even having enough grace to make him a Pro hibitionist and a man might re nounce that infernal traffic and still be under the power of some other evil My inquiries are not merely formal I wish to do justice to Mr Ingersoll and if you can show me that he has any fundamental worth of characterthat he has never sold himself to sin nor sa in the seat of the scornful that he loves righteousness and hates iniquity I wish to get accquainted with yoursIBro Mason from Cleveland O wrote me almost a duplicate of this letter in sentiment and hav ing answered that fully I will say but little in reply to this I be lieve both of these gentlemen are thoroughly unprejudiced regard ing Mr I suspect that I have said more i that was eulogistic of Col lager soil than the facts warranted I have been so disgusted with the professed belief of more incredi ble things in the name of religion that I was glad to see Ingersoll expose them but I think it possible that in this matter I have been somewhat like the Indians tree so straight that I leaned over wayIfor a short time the recipient of hospitality at the hands of Col Ingersoll lie impressed me as being a broad minded bigheartedman who loved his wife and was generous because he could afford to be In all that has been said against him nobody has said anythingagainst his morals He may have been the paid attorney of liquor men but if
