Presbyterian church j regular attendant at prayer m- eetling prays loudly in public and to mi eldership in the church but they have not quite cheek enough to elect him while Pppersdistillery r Just think of his running a distillery six days in the weekand a Presbyterian Sunday schoohon seventhI it SUBSCRIBER was foreor I would rather have you sign your name and look like you were not afraid but I publish this caUse I personally know the main supposeitj Yes its a sweet combination to be a superintendent ofa Sunday school and the superintendent ofa distillery at the same time publishedhow trouble by drinking the whisky that the Colonel and Bro Pew upThere is onlyone other class of business houses in the world that is so damnable as a Lexington distillery and that is a shebang like that First Presbyterian church that puts a hireling at the head of a Sundayschool to let them absorb his liquor traffic ideas i iJ the name of religion Bro JeW aside from his busi ness is a nice man and so is Col Pepper and for that matter so was Jesse James But I would forty to one rather see Col per in the pulpit of the First Presbyterian church and a man at the head of the Sundayschoolwho by precept and example would teach the boys of Lexington the danger of whisky than to have it as jt is now If Col Pepper were in the pulpit there would not be any hypocrisy in him and the people he would talk to would be oldenough to look out for them boysjustimpression on them The literary genius that has made me a bloated bond holder as editor of the Blade came very near being diverted in my early cuttingboxesMy first Sundayschool teacher made cutting boxes That First Presbyterian church with a distillery superintendent at the head of its Sundayschool is a worse institution than Col Pep distilleryThe does its business open and above board It deals 1il full grown men and nobody is fooled by it Col Pepper in his late published letter about his brother has been candid enough to intimate xo us pretty plainly that he is too smart to drink his own whisky Bro Pew however its an honest man can not lure to teach the boys in his Sundayschool that they ought not to drink whisky lie has no right to take Col Peppers money for mductiug his distillery and then try to breakdown the Colonels business un derhandedly by teaching the boys that they utt not to drink the Colonels whisky And I will bet he would not dare to teach tho- serhlsi that they oughi not to drink anybodys whisky It would take a cheek Ijke a government mule for him to do so and Col Pepper ought to fire him ns high as a roc et it Bro Pew says a word against whisky drinking If Bro Pew is a consistent man and a loud prayer he ought in his closet and publicly to ask God to help him to make good whisky anda heap of it and help Bro Pepper to sell it No Christian man ought to git his living at the hands of another roan unless he is willing to ask God to bless that man in his business It is sad to think how the youths of our land are being systematically educated in whisky drinking but so far as the churches are concerned I do not care a snap for them It these inebriate asylums they put whisky in everything that a man eats and drinks until he gets tired of the smell ofwhisky I want it that way in Lexington Its in politics and religion and I dont care if they set a barrel of whisky on the communion tables every Sunday and give every fel low as much of it as he can swal low It would make a boss re LexingtonAll eommunitfn every Sunday at least once and may be several times o1ybutthat would get up and march out when they the hymn just forecqtnmunion tonsmntcautstwoulil smell of it In one sense of the word it looks a little rough on Prohibition to make a Sundayschool superin thearun may rightlaceNow what I have said here is going to cost me 200 beside the type setting in it Bro Pew has paid me for the Blade just up to this time but it will be a cold day when I get another 200 out of him May be one of Elijahs ravens willcome sailing along or one of Peters fish come swimming up the turnpike witha couple of dol lars in his mouth It seems to me that if I were the cause of a marts losing 200 I would try to make it up to him I ought to have waiteduntil Bro Pew had paiduP for next year and then printed this mans note A Sew York Christian who Wautti Prohibitionists to get out of the Churches and use Their money for Prohibition Bro A Cobb one of the most active Prohibitionists in his part of Kentucky writes me a letter enclosing one from New York The letters are as follows OWENTIN KY Sept 9 91 Tt V C Moore Esq DEAR SIR Yon will find closed a tract that chows what iu effect the course that the church members are pursuing is having on good men who are conscientious about the whisky traftiic While I think he has taken extreme grounihHn thematter I know that the way things are goy ingall have a tendency to exert a wonderful bad effect on the churchesI a letter from same man to me You can put them to any use you JYoursA Cotta FKANKLIN DELAWARE Co N Y Aug 27 1891 Mr A Cobb Owcnton Ky DEAR SIR AND BROTHER Your article Gone Back in The Beacon of July 28 has a hearty endorsement byme except I can not make claim that I have gone back but I do know by the step I have taken that I have gone ahead So I believe you can and do sec that instead 01oJr having gone back you have taken a long step ahead The attitude of the socalled Christian church to the liquor license party should be a suffi cient cause for every Prohibitionist to seveI his connection with the church and to educate and urge every person to never enter its fold I couldnot be reconciled in my conscience while I remained in the church after I saw how com pletely subservient it was to the liquor license party To remain in that organization and give it my moral and material support was an endorsement of its attitude to the gigantic crime of crimes besides I saw that Iwas clearly to that extent ofmy ability and counccionperpettlaing- that curse which I was laboring to suppress I know Iam often told by some who are superficial inc thought and investigation that I could have held m relation with the church and yetbe free from the responsibility what others of the members and that I ought to stay in the churchand help purify it etc Christ had such logic presented to him but he said he must build anew from the foundation and that to have gone into the Jewish churchwould have involved him in the Bins of that church and the perpetuations thereof Did you ever think the result if every Prohibition man and woman steploutvast volume of mone they now give to that tion into Prohibition organizl1 Along the whole line many Prohibs who are about to step out and up from the liquor party church Such a step would be followed by a progress to the Prohibition party such as has not been seen since its organization I believe we will make but little progress in many ears unless we go forward from the church Did you ever think of Moses and the history of the Israelites The North wing and the South wing of the M E churchsep slaveryThof organizations when decent peo pIe must separate from them and TheIeisstitution against the approach of criminals than to keep the moral standard of that institution high above this class The church will never rise above the controlling influence of the dominant political parties anti the former will adopt the same corrupt methqds to live as do the practicallythe same as does the liquor license partySome will point me to the strongantilicense resolutions adopted b the different church conferences as some arguments against my position but to offset I ask how do you vote Unless the resolution is art indication of what you will do or will not do at the ballotbox you will make yourselves the greatest frauds by offeringand adopting such resolutions Any way you can fix it liquorlicensebrother work shoulder to shoulder with me to educate the people fo haye no affiliation with the un thingThe party and the W C T U are a good enough aud safe enough home for me for the present I send you a few copies of my printed views which I entertain of the socalled Chris tian churchYours truly D W GRANGER Thems my sentiments as the prayerTherespolitics and good business in what saysWe our satisfaction atleast that Prohibition is right and therefore any church that Qpposes it must be wrong and we should act accor IHre resolutibiisrpassed by the churches in favor of Prohibition are exactly like the declarations of the Republican party on subjectThey resolutions against the liquor traffic and the very people who draft the resolutions intend at the time to vote for liquorIt a very easy matter to demonstrate that the church is the enemyof Prohibition There are 5200000churche member voters in the United States andonly 250000all total who vote for Prohibitions and all the rest vote against it In other words when one churchmember votes against the liquor traffic there are twontI church members who vote When a man gives twentyone cents to the church twenty cents of it go to keeping up the liquor traffic and one cent goes toward it down A Prohibitionist who gives anything to the support of the church furnishes a stick to break hs own head If you do not think this is a one sided transaction just try the experiment of asking any church to raise money to help the Prohibition party They will raise money to build fine churches and pay big salaries to fancy preachers and buy them gold headed canes andwatches or to send them to the sea shore or Europe or Palestine or the devil but you ask anyone of your churches to make an aproppriation to assist the Prohibition party to save the women andchildren from all the horrors of the liquor traffic and they will laughat you If the Prohibitionists in every state would give no more to any church and give all to the Prohibition party that they have been giving to the churches we would ampleipurposes and if anything would bring the churcher to their senses that would 1 believe another irrepressible conflict has begun and that it willend in war just like the slavery question did Slavery was no infamy at all compared with the liquor traffic It onlen slaved the bodies of men and women and children but it had many redeeming features But therois not one single pali ating future in the liquor traffic numeriIltosubmit to the liquor powers ut when the Prohibi 8 tionists get stronger in certain lo cali ties they may resist by force the locating of saloons in their midst which have gotten their licenses and it will begin like the war against slavery did in Kansas and at Harpers Ferry Wives and mothers and sisters will incite men to arms to save their husbands aril sons and brothers The country is fullof good woman who are outraged and indignant beyond expression at the contemptiblecowardice of the men who encourage the liquor traffic Women lead the men in the French Revolution and twice lately in Missouri the women have marched on saloons and but tered down their doorswith axes and destroyed their contents and fixtures and the courts didnot punish them They will do it again some bigbullshoot some of them and then we will have it The decent people will be brought to their senses and saloonkeepers will have to get away And when once the goforasthey did for the old JBastile I hope there will never he a liquorrimyanother war would be better than what we now have The four years of war that did away with slavery were better than slavery and the people it killed and the misery it created were nothing conlpared to what the liquor traffic doingAll America the Prohibi tionistsare indignant against the churches ond calling on all good people to et out of them just as the Abolitionists did before the warYou will hear men laugh and ridicule such an idea as I am sug laughthatand amuse themselves at the idea that the slaves would ever be freed They killed Lovejoy in Illinois Yirginiabutists The liquor men have already killed three Prohibitionists- and thrown eggs and stones into pollsThe never forget that and it will make- brave women want to vote The liquor traffic has to goi peaceably if possible but otherwise if necessary Ilogot the Wrong Mary POI OROVE KY Sept 18 91 Mr Moore DEAR SiRI see from your last weeks paper that you are Ben Hurr the love story of Jesus and Mary the sister of Lazarus I will quote you from my book The Rational Tiwpage 356 what I have there saidon that subjectIt as follows On the other hand the utterances of Jesus and Paul seem rather to disparage matrimony though seems to have loved Lazarus and I think it eminently to his credit to say that his love of Lazarus was perhaps no little enhanced because Lazarus had two pretty and bright sisters that entertained him nicely the one presiding in the parlor and the other in thd kitchen when he Iioutuntil the next morning where the attractive Mary sat and listened long to the beautiful ideas that Jems enunciated his conversation and with a rapture more ex DeBIdemonIt has always sounded to me like a story of a human love for a human woman who I got that wasreally discouraging to meI got one from somebody some whereI forgetthat scored me like the dickens about my theol ogy but he said in his letter I am as good a Prohibitionist as yo are theology with my wife he would hardly recommend her as an adviser on that subject for me- Another man gets me on m Boost of Col Ingersoll 6 UNION PUCE BROOKLYN N Y Editor Blue Grass Blade DEAR SIRI have been reading your eulogy on Mr Robert In gersoUuBobas they call him in you really tell the truth about him Did h not act as a liquor attorney in Washington and take ten thousand dollars from brewers and distillers for such service Give the devil his due but whywhite wash an infidel because he is an infidelI this for information I have never studied his career an never read his writings which seem too loose and inconsequent to be worth reading Still Iup preciate his great service to the church in exposing shams and ad mire his courage Bnt as to his being a good man I didnotsup pose he ever pretended to be or would thank any one for attribu ting any such exaltation of char acter to him I am glad you are ready to put the great Nazarene above him but honestly now Bro Moore are there not 10000 better men than Ingersoll in America I am quite honest and unpreju diced in my enquiries If your eulogy is correct I have always greatly undervalued him I always supposed him to be a selfis worldy man not even having enough grace to make him a Pro hibitionist and a man might re nounce that infernal traffic and still be under the power of some other evil My inquiries are not merely formal I wish to do justice to Mr Ingersoll and if you can show me that he has any fundamental worth of characterthat he has never sold himself to sin nor sa in the seat of the scornful that he loves righteousness and hates iniquity I wish to get accquainted with yoursIBro Mason from Cleveland O wrote me almost a duplicate of this letter in sentiment and hav ing answered that fully I will say but little in reply to this I be lieve both of these gentlemen are thoroughly unprejudiced regard ing Mr I suspect that I have said more i that was eulogistic of Col lager soil than the facts warranted I have been so disgusted with the professed belief of more incredi ble things in the name of religion that I was glad to see Ingersoll expose them but I think it possible that in this matter I have been somewhat like the Indians tree so straight that I leaned over wayIfor a short time the recipient of hospitality at the hands of Col Ingersoll lie impressed me as being a broad minded bigheartedman who loved his wife and was generous because he could afford to be In all that has been said against him nobody has said anythingagainst his morals He may have been the paid attorney of liquor men but if he has otherwise counten anced the liquor traffic further than to vote with the Republican party I do not know it I think him the most beautiful combination of orator and writer in America and he has blazed the way for thse prominent and lrarnedclergymen who arc kick ing outof the little Procrustean trundle bed of orthodoxy and yet for all this there stands the abso lutely indefensible fact that when the Prohibition issue is presented to him he goes and votes against Prohibition and side by side with the most hypocritical ofall the church people that he has schathedWe remember that moral evolution like the natural is per petual and no one man can be a reformer in everything I think that the humblest Pro hibitionist in the laud has gone ahead of Col Ingersoll in moral grandeur But if Prohibition were an accomplished tact tomor lulow would be fussing at us Prohibitionists because we did not come along with them to some thing higher I believe that Ingersolls work willadvance the world as Martin Luthers did Luther certainly dida great work but when a young man once went to him expecting spirit ual consolation when he was de pressed old Martin told him to get drunk Measured by the standards o this day Luther was a perfect old ignoramus and in a thousand years from now they will he put ing fresh ink on the wall where he threw his inkstand at the devil but his work for enlightenment was simpjy inestimable Kentucky has never produced but one hero That was Casius MClayHe slavery here when everybody was against him and yet I have published in the Blade his letters to me in which he speaks of Prohibition in the most disparaging terms And yet I am bound to honor Cassius M Clay Not that he is now doing any good for Prohibition a greater issue than slavery ever was but for the good he has done In the same spirit 1 honor Col Ingersoll I believe that George Washington was an oM wine bibbing aris tocrat who would have been king of the United States if Thomas Jefferson and Tom Paine and Ben jamine Franklin had not checked him but Washington will stand in history as monumental as pyramids- e Goidano Bruno and Voltaire are immortal and Ingersoll will its countenance to the crime were wiped out of ex istence the pure light of Christianity would shine out with undiminished lustreNEW YORK VOICE The above is front the New York Voice the national organ of the Prohibition party It is edited by Christian gentlemen al least one of whom ia minister Ordinarily I do not use the expression Thank God but al lowing me to use that simply as an expression of gratulation every word of that paragraph expresses my feelings as perfectly as if I myselfh that Iaupersonal and that I make local applications of my convictions anti I know as they say that I make enemies by it But lam not trying to make friends andwould be proud to lose every one I have on earth to beat this liquor infamy My personal friendships are a matter of small moment to the worldand the only thing Iantrying to put down is this moment tous and gigantic evil that rears its dragon head to oppose the pro gress civilization I make the personal and local application of this sentiment ot the Voice because I want the pep pie to see and feel and appreciate what I mean by it There are in Lexington today probably something near 30000 people Of these thousands there were 62 who are opposed to th liquor traffic and showed their opposition by their vote for Prohi bition last August All th others who can vote are in favor of the liquor traffic andshowed their preference for it by voting with some of the other political AugustIn there are about twenty churches supposing all of these persons who vote for Prohibition to be church members there was an average of three men in each church who vote for Prohibition All the others voted to uphold a crime so great that it is a notorious fact that the Mahometans andother heathen are trying to prevent the introduction of it by Christians into their countries What I mean to say then is ifevery church in Lexington were wiped out of existence the pure light of Christianity would shine with undiminished luster There is just as good reason to day why fire and brimstone should rain on Lexington as there ever was that it should fall on Sodom an GomorrowlThe average church df Lexington is not pile particle better than the average saloon of Lexington and the average churchmember of Lexington is not a particle better than the average saloonkeeper of Lexington and the average saloon keeper of Lexing ton is an infinitely worse citizen than the average thief of Lexing tonI want the churches of Lexing ton demolished until there shall not he left one stone upon another and I want this for the same rea son that I want the saloons and the distilleries demolished name equallthe y Christian leaders of these churches areputting Christian bar keepers in their saloons and honoring these barkeepers by giving them distinguishedofficial positions for no reason on earth except that they are barkeepers Any man in the city knows that the socalled Christians in all the churches in Lexington have voted for saloonkeepers for state and city officers who never would have been thought of in connection with those offices if they had not saloonkeepersThe between the average Lexington Christian and the average Lexington sa loonkeeper is that while the sat loon keeper has the daredevil termidity to ruin and damn men women and children to support his worse than vagabond life the socalled Christian is a Rneak and a hyppocrite who has not the courage to let it be known that is e a silent partner with the sa loon keeper in this indiscriminate robbery of the innocent aril the proverbial bold badman who comes out openly with saloon or distillery has in hi something magnanimous as com pared with the man who marches with dignified mien down the cen ther isle ot a church with Bis Bible and hymn book under one arm and his wife and children under the other and with a sanctified countenance joins in the andsinging or responses in tending at the very time he performing this farce to vote wit the saloonkeeper against Prohibition and infavor of degrading men and breaking the hearts of women and of starvingchildren At the ratefthe church in Le ington is now going it will sop 3be case that no real high tone aud honest man will acknowledge himself member of the church As it is today no converts are made to these churches except amongunintelligent women and children I do not know ofa single instance in twenty years which any fully matured and ed cated man has joined any church in Lexington- t I am an infidel and IJknow how they talk They are nearly al ways reading and thinking men and they despise hypocrites They may vote with those churc- hypocrites but I believe that they recognize just as much as they do anyother business proposition that any man who is a churchman and votes against Prohibition is suchand votes us he dues simply for business advantage I do not believe there is an infidel in Fay ette county who will not say the consistency would compel every Christian to vote for Prohibition Even it the church could over come the theoretical objection o these men to the miracles in the Christian religion a still more difficult thing would be to go them to incur the suspicion o having some sinister motive ii joining the church And there is good ground for this So common is it for people to connect themselves with churches for social and business advantage that I am satisfied that if Iwere to join the church to morrow all the infidels and ninetenths of the Christians would say that I did so to boom the Blade and the remaining tenth that did not say it would think it and I know that every newspaper in town would insinuate it So that if I ever do join anychurch again unless there is some radical turning to the primitive simplicity of Christianity that I can hardly anticipate while I live I am go ing to join the heathen Mahome opeposed to the liquor traffic As it is now I dont mind going geteting a backseat where I can hear the music anti take a nap when i l i 1 the fellow thats preachinp gets A few years ago he was a New York saloonkeeper and prize fighter an he was a terror NOV there is not a man among us that we al love anymore and crowds o people go to hear him It seems to me that anybody would think that Jo Hess is a nicer man now when he is a Prohibition worker and loved by thousands of good men and women all over the United States than he used to be when he made his this great and good Catholic benefactor Truly politics makes strong bed fellows Judge Jewells famousapothcgm is correct It is not necessary that some Kentucky saloon keeper should be so talented in preachersGod the preachers they are asleep Brethren like the disciples the night Jesus twos taken Let us awake them Yours for ProhibitionE Thats one of the most sensible of the many sensible letters that were ever written to the Blade That is the spirit of the ChrisI ian religion That he believes everything in tne Bible from Ginseng to Reyolu tious I dont believe all jug full but his religion and mine arc as much alike as two black eye peas because we get it out of the same hookand we are thingBlesi1cd mandments It does not amount to a hillof eaiH with me if that brother believes that Jonah swallowedt string of whales as as here to Cincinnati just so he does rightCertainly I was right when I said Down with the churches and the preachers We dont want one of these modern churches or modern preachers in the world and the sooner we get rid of the whole of them the better When the people of this countryrevive the primitive church of the first Christians I want to take stock in it Those people had no build logs for they met at each others houses und the pur pose of the meeting was to who needed help and to to help them and every man brought along with him with which to do that accordin as he had prospered in business I am in for a church of tvilrstart And as to that matter of having property in common that the brother alludes to I have said fo years that the Shakers were not far wrong on that subject if the old fools had not spoiled it all by saying we should not have our wivesI a good kind of religio- f very well but I would not give my wife and children for all the religion in the world Bellamys Looking Backward is all built upon the idea of tin early Christian community o property But for these fine churches that stick their steeples away up in the sky and these fine preachers that try to stick themselves up as high as their steeples I have no use on earth They do not make an hottest dollar in a ear They are magnificent dead beats trod are not worth their salt I do not mean somebody elses preachers away off yonder I mean that priests and preachers right here in Lexington are worthless set They have been having their big churches here fore a hundred years and blowing their big horns and organs and are living in palatial style and dress finer than I did when Inthe only son of a daddy that ha a Hundred thousand dollars o n finer than I did when I wa matured or was a drummer for Leverings coftee and they are- the slickest articles that walk these streets and yet after the thousands and thousands of dol lars that are annually paid them when it comes to an election there are only 62 people in a town of nearly 30000 that under the be nign influence of the Christian r11I ligion are even willing to rote r common decencyof In the early days of the Chris tian religion the preachers were always getting whipped and kicked about by the bad men they were working against but in Lex saloonkeepcrin and gambler and thief in the whole town pulls oft his hat and smiles when he meets any priest grayheaded a elevationlikeonly fellow in town that these lows want to kill because he says anything againt them Yes put all these preachers to honest work shucking corn and wading around in the water Building watergap like I have just been doing knock the steeples off these churches and make business houses of them tear out bigluthe rest of them for butchers refrigerators and let the honest Christian people meet when necessary to consult about helping their fellow men and you will make more honest converts to tho Christian religion in week than all of these fine gentlemen have m yearsYou Bro Rolf arid we will get even with some of them itBoth of Them Wrong Charles C Moore editor of the Kyistion an unusual association his enemies some that the above is all intendedI fItany man should think as the Is sue seems to do that there is any moral merit in belief or dctmerit in unbelief belief mere accident of evidence or of he logical receptivity the mind to which it is presented and both of these being circumstances ovcrtwhicha man has no control liefand unbelief are not matters ofvolition or of preference but o necessity demeritinplainest proposition conceivable certainly there could be no de merit in the disbelief of a state ment which seems intrinsically improbableNo that some other man sins in not believ ing that the three angles of ever tweo an a man is a good man because he believes thge angle is equivalent to the sum of 1the squares described on the other One of the greatest scholars ant best men that I over knew be iuhabrited by intelligent beings and have made the same argument in The Rational View but I do not think that it makes a mart any better or worse to believe or dis inhabnited Talmage has lately preached sermon in which he th belief that Gen Dyrenfurth has bylpr oUely the sane tutimony the subject that Dr Talmage has had but I do not believe that Gen Dyrenfurth ever merle a sin gle raindrop full or that the tiring of a columbiad or a gas balloon would come un nearer to making a rain than the tiringof a Christmas fire cracker Yet nobody would say that Tal mages beliefin Dyrenfurths rain theory makes Talmage any better man than I am- a 1 know the best kindof men who believe in spiritualism and believe that they see spirits and talk to them and I believe them to be sensible and cultivated und honest men and yet alter I haves carefully listened to their t- estildsubject and I do not believe any of it rod yet no man of sound judgment says that Isin in not geutlemedo n The large majority ofus are satisfied from the evidence the world and the heavenly move but when occasionally we come across a man who does not accept the Copernicaii thornyn astronomy but inclines to the opinion of the Rev Joseph that the sun do move nobody sa a the majority are any better or the dissenter is any worse in conse quence of their belief or disbelief Irwe have all had precisely the same evidence on the subject But ifl go ahead and say fur thermore that I believe that for the last ten thousand years the earthand allof these heavenly bodies have moved without in domeetoday my brother Prohibition editor of the Issue will insinuate that I am a fool and that because I believe that I deserve to be burnt in hell just a little less than man who upholds the liquor traffic My brother of the Issue calls my attention to the alleged fact that about three thousand years ago a man named Joshua having occasion to murder a great many innocent men couldnot get through the job before ic just ordered the sun antimoon to standstill and the earth and heavenly bodies all obeyed him In all the cycles of eternity my Brother of the Issue thinks that such a thing never had been done before and never will be done again even by the God that made the universe but because I do not relieve that story and could not c believe it if my life depended upon my brother Prohibitionist l seems to think it an instance of rare Christian charity that he r holds me morally little above a storybutdamnest infamy that ever disgraced h the human race K Just as long as the belief in that story of Joshua is made any p part of the Christian religion and man who does not believe if but does love and revere the character of Jesus of Nazareth is put almost on the same footingwith a man who does believe it andvotes against Prohibition will the church be the covenant with hell and league with the deviland bulwark of the rum traffic that the New York Voice said it is and to which the large majority- of the Prohibition papers of the United States have said Amen Dr Talmage on Kiilu jIltIi iI1Jt While all Prohibitionists should appreciate the services of Dr Tal mage to Prohibition it is true that as a scientist he is exceedingly unreliable He has lately preached a sermon in which ic announces that rain making s an accomplished fact and that the next thing to be done will be find some means of stopping he rain when it is excessive This disposition to believe in the improbable on very limited testimony probably accounts for au orthodoxy in religious matters bat is sr raewhat remarkable in a man of his prominence ahsofof Gen Dyrenfurth to prove the efficacyothia rain making theory and there is no scientific basis for his theory It is exceedingly doubtful if itI would be any improvement upon the order of nature for men to exercise the power of rain making if they had tine power and it is alI beysequent great dissatisfaction as toI the time at which the rain should he produced Just now for instance Iits a farmer and the whole farming interest of the Bluegrass Region needrain for ourgrass and wheat agriIthat would be injured by the rain tvouhIthat we are ready tor a heavy rain just at the hour I write this But if we had the rain making power and the superintendent o f the weather should turn on a heavyrain right now he would be in great personal danger for- doingsOl if Eomebody did not kil Before the earth could dry from such a rain the time for ting race between Nancy Hanksl i and AHerton will have come and the race track in Lexiugt would be muddy and slow It is estimated by some that there will be as many as fifty thousand pco pie to see that race The main feature of the excitement will to see if Nancy can reduce her recordone quarter ofa second and thus equal Maud Sorpossibly reduce it one half a second and thus make the fastest trot ever made For Nancy Hanks to do that would require the must favorable conditions and a muddy race track would almost certainly be fatal to suchan achievement While the real interest of hu manity is that we should have trio and make bread if left to a vote of the people of the United States they would sacrifice the whole wheat cropof the Bluegrass Region in order that Nancy Hanks might have a mile of road to suit her for a little more than two minutes- Si that even if we hud absolutes control of the rain not only could we no get the people to agree to whim they would hove it we could not anticipate the bntI tvorie conditions that would such a rain desirable It is not infrequently the can that years that have what for theI time are regarded disastrous drouths prove ultimata ly a to be signally successful crop jcarsI Such a year as the present one The Worker Endorses Tile Pciioii The
