engraving from a photograph hy Mullen is oTerec to the readers of TUB BLADE without extra charge just as the New York Voice oft rs The An- gelus This picture is intended tc present the Prohibition argu ment to the Farmers Alliance people All previous compositions on The Cow have assumed that The cow is a very useful animal This cow is an exception to that rule AngelusisGeneral Vannaraaker The orig inal of this picture is the property of R B Neal editor of The vWorker Prohibition- It will be noticed that this cow is not a shorthorn Tat only short horns that have over been popular in this State were bn cattle This picture ought not to re quire a key to it but the ar gument for liquor has been so thoroughly indoctiinatcd into the Kentucky mind that it quires a diagram to get the peo plo of this country to see any force in anything that opposes it A Farmers Alliance man ought certainly to know about cows and hiMKam a farmer an know a em You see t1i18HJquo 0 tiling on wl eeISj1ite cow 900000000 a year Lextuglon Christians tug Evnlu I am going to tell you some thing tolerable funny that yoi have thought about and you will say so when you read it It is suggested by the fact thai my good friend and neighbor in this city has complained several times lately because the BIAD did not get to him all right I am going to retaliate just a little He and his wife are thoroughly orthodox Christian people and have been so ever since I knew them I have one of these bad memories that never forgets any thing and I nearly always find a chance to get even with a fellon if it takes forty years to do it You Christian people are evo luting and you dont know itand you wouldnt care if you did know and you couldnt help yourselves if you did care and I have helped you to evolute and I pro pose to do it still further and you are not very badly scared bymy plain outspoken proposition I have for years been trying tc get into to your heads that the Christian religion is something tc DO rather than something to be Gene and the year of the Lord is ut hand when the public estimate ol a Christian is going to be the man who practices toward his fellowman the good deeds that Jesus ol Nazareth taught and people wont care a snug whether that man believes that Jonah swallowed the whale or the whale swallowed Jonah or the whole thing was a fish story that wouldnt do to tell to the marines while on the other hand the man who claims to believe everything in the Bible anti nay believe everything in it who sings psalms and prays am votes tin whisky and is of licensing certain connection with sending the gospel to the heath en or building free schools or charitable institutions but as at investment in Kentucky whisky and beer that gives to men the personal liberty to get drunk and kill somebody or whip their wives its not enough to content about and we will let the cost of that haystack go for 800000000 as indicatedmy the artist anc based on a congressional report of a committee appointed for that calf Revenue runs with its manmy and gets every drop of the milk So that all that cow has to do is to raise one call like that every year Now the very slime going to recall some facts that you will remember that will show you the growth of sentiment in favor ol the practical in religion and the corresponding secession from Kccleaiasticism and the fear of priestcraft About fifteen years I wrote an article for the boxing on Press called A Lay Sermon for Preachers and being a layser mon it laid for them The worst thing in it was my ridicule of an Episcopal preach ers corning out before all the people with a night gown on in day time- I poked all sorts ot fun at it and rung all the changes on itIaud everybody laughed but the Episcopalians and they didnt laugh worth a cent 1r that nnv ful minates through that organ then smole the benignant smile that now illuminates the sanctum of the P ess Captain Jesse Woodrttfl in those daysu8 an employed editor furnished bruins for the PresH My piece wits published in the absence of the proprietor and Captain Woodruff by far the most competent newspaper man in the town was discharged front his position for printing it and has never since engaged in jour nalism The discharge of Captain Voodrull was done byo man of the high order of intelligence of the Press proprietor to placate the oitendcd religious sentiment of a part of this community that was so largo that the pro prietor thought it oxpe1iontto do thisYet I could print that sumo piece in the HIAUR to day and I do not suppose there is an lipiscopal ian town that would ho silly enough to get mad about it tutu the cow But just as Uncle Sam is go ing to shoot a Kentucky Demo crat says Hold on Uncle Sam dont kilt thee hen that lays the golden egg Hnv are we going to raise Mlnvonue to pay current expenses of the Govern ment without that cow T And you see that Uncle Sam has dropped ills gun from his eye when ho had drawn a bead on that cow to lilt her behind the shouldnr and go right into her vitals and Uncle Sam says he has to give if ip because he cant see row he is going to raise Revenue without the cowBut on the left there in that humble house with his front porch hardly as high a3 his head is a Farmers Alliance man who is a party Prohibitionist and who votes with the Prohibitionists as the shortest cut to getting at what the farmers want lie is yelling out to Uncle Sam and this is what he says Shoot that cow Shes a bummed old stray anyhow and eats X80 worth of my hay every year Kill the cow and I will General Hanking Business Transacted Special Attention given to Collec tines and all Correspondence v P1 f The Farmers Alliance The Farmers Alliance that met in this city last week left here after having made a most pleasant impression on our peo pie They passed resolutions voring Prohibition A majority of them numerically and a larger majority of them intellectually are Prohibitionists but they are without any adequate plan of organization and do not know how to get at what they want They are what the scriptures call wandering staTsin what the astronomers call the nebulous state without form and voidI They are as a body with radical individual exceptions the friends of Prohibition and our natural allies They were pretty haughty su percilhous and independent about their recent political success 1 tried to take some of the windI out of their sails by telling them limplythe way for them and that it was nothingmore than the Dutch taking Amsterdam They saidI I they couldnt see it but they did see it all the same Then they showed their power in South Carolina but what was the rea son Henry Grady has given his jIfthing more than be camp follow ers for Prohibition why dont they sweep whisky Democracy out of Kentucky Their leaders f are all right but they are prac ticing a scheme on their follow ers that is almost as bad as either Democracy or Republicanism The best men among them are Prohibitionists and told me their plans Dr Alexander of this city is a splendid gentleman a farmer as well as physician and says he is thoroughly in sym partylieeverything that comes like th net in the parable that was cast into the sea and then instruct andassimilate them after they get them in But I think that without some more definite plat form of principles they will find that when the assimilating process is attempted to be applied the difficulty will be to what is the standard todetermineI must conform t If I could catch complicated and obscure plans their order is a secret one no man can become a member without pledging himself to sup port it and that without know ing what it is that ho thus engages to supportII do not think anyman ought to do this and upon this ground if upon no other I would object to Masonary Odd Fellow ship Know Nothingism or any proposition in any form to which a man may be asked to subscribe1 without knowing as fully as ho can understand under the mostI 1favorable circumstances never liked secrets I would not be a party Prohibitionist if the order was a secret one The Prohibition party has never had any occasion for secrecy but wants its doors and its deeds Iewidecommon is that they are not a party One of their speakers tookspecial pains to deny the truth of this and say that they were a party The difference is merely technic al Their plans or lack of plans are full of impracticabilities They propose to stand as a balance of power between Dem ocrats and Republicans and to terrorize each of them so that they will bring out as candidates the kind of men that suit the purposes of the Alliance If both of the parties bring out men favorable to the Alliance it is a true that the Alliance can have its purposes accomplished with out voting at all But suppose neither side brings out a man a that suits the Alliance as will al most certainly be the case in a National election what redress will the Alliance have An alligator once swallowed cat alive and whole The cat scratched out and killed the alli gator The Alliance men may Hatter themselves that they are powerful enough to swallow up one of big political parties by combining with them to elect n a manIt look so for awhile but a when it comes to the administration of Governments the Democratic or Republican cat will scratch out Each of these parties has thelslfarming Republicanism in the North east cares but little for the farmer because the farming is not the prominent interest of the country TIle influence of the Northeast is so much greater than that of the Northwest whose farm ing is the principal interest that Northeastern Republicanism can manage Northwestern Republi canism without making any con cessions to it The stronghold of the farmers interest is in the South and Do mocracy the dominent party of the South ought to be the part of the farmer But it is not and is e prestcraticparty The men who are elected to office are nominated by profes sional politicians who lure about the towns and who are not in sympathy with the farming in terests nearlyalwayseffect their purposes and it is therefore almost practically im possible to put into office mon who are known to be opposed to this and the great mass of the farming community of the better class is opposed to this so that the interests of the farmer and the plans of Southern De mocracy are radieallyjit variance st The plan by which the Alliance people may best accomplish their purposes is to coalesce with the Prohibitionists in their effort to overthrow the liquor traflic help them to elect sober and moral men u in which event the country would standeven a better chance for representation than the towns and with this kind of men in office the claims of the farmer would be most naturally secured to him The statistics of our country show that an immense per cent of the physical and moral evils of the land proceed from the use of liquors The use of liquor byour politicians either personally or to influence others is almost univer sal and as the country is lull of politicalevils of which the farmer JIliquors is the cause of this evilI 0 just as we see it to be the the evils of which the statistics can and do take cogni zance The for the Farm Jofall in with the Prohibitionists and help them to cut the taproot the fie whole trouble the liquor men whom the sober and just claims o the farmers who has the purest and most honest of all callings themselvesIItelligent of these Alliance men some significant appreciations of this idea They had their headquarters at Ashland House in this city lung the main office was nearly all the time crowded with them openingAlliance men said to me With these Alliance men in here I been watching that door and rarely opens Jf these were Democrats that barkeeper in there helpThoseto the old party conventions and the Prohibition conventions at Lieder kranz Hall in Louisville probably remember the saloon attached to the building that is opened for the old party conventions and unoccu piedwhen the Prohibitionists arc there If the Alliance people cast in their lot with us we can sweep the consistentlybe platform upon which allmoral men and good citizens can stand But all Prohibitionists can not he Farmers Alliance men because large portion of the Prohibi tionists are not farmers at all and many of Democrat has a keen vision in one e for the iniquities on the Republican But each has one blind eye tha sees tto rottenness on his own side of the pool Great pains is taken in every cam paign by each side to keep the fa sighted eye wide open What is needed to get the blind eye open McGinty is positive that the cesspool rank on both sides it is one cesspool the chief source of corruption is the name for it alltUnt is to say bung hole or rather two bunjhole8 one in whisky barrel the other in tho beer McGinty syd that until a dead set is mode at these tJungbcles and those who control them all the municipal leagues reform clubs of creation may skim scum off the cesspool until the crack doom without making it wholesome That is what McGinty says He ought know for he has been to the bottom the thing Look at it hoWs third of the Republican primaries and twothirds of Democratic p iraaries in New York nearly the saite proportion in Brook lynheld by actual count in saloons Look at it says ho twelve of Re pnblican clubs iq Nev York city in too presidential crnpaign were named after liquor tlacrs nail supported and controlled by tlti And it was the New York vote that decided the presi dential election People talk about Tammany says he is Tammany but an organization saloon keepers and their dummies t of the gemral committee of 4000 members nearly 700 are liquor dealers might bloc up Tammany Hall as bighas Hell Gab and with the saloons we would have a new Tammany as as the old People thought it was Tweed who male Tammany so power Tweed went to the penitentiary then they thought it was Kelly Kelly died and lOW they think it is all to Croker Grant Gilroy and Cock But jwhaw the big four might die from softening of the conI ence and the saloons would keep just where it is now The way to feat Tammany Hall at present is to getup another organization more saloox keepers in it than Tammany hasand then it will be just as wicked as Tamnany Ilw rat of Tcam sn J tola in tile name 1t wins oecanao tile saloon keepers in it are so Tammany Cast your eye on this fact also says McGinty In tho Republican general committee of New York city there were in fiftythree liquor dealers by citizens lately say that for a man to join tho Knights of Labor is to make himself morally responsible for the timetlegiance to a political party that had for its national chairman a brarfded crimi shebang of every large city in the Union just as they do in New York And there are none in which theaLouis Omaha and Kansas City What is worse says McGiuty they are going to keep on running things as long as they run themselves heoare can done One is to let the saloons keep on running things and the other is to send the whole infernal saloon business to everlasting smash And McGinty ought to know for he has been to the bottom of the thing Hang it all says he so long as his bust ness is legalized the saloon keeper has as much right in politics as any other man It makes me tired to hear men talk about the saloon keeper as a sort of leper while he is simply conducting the business which the same men vote to license and protect by law and to receive money fromevery year They vote to legalize the business and to share in the proceeds and then are shocked over the wickedness of any man worsecme sick They make me sicker than the cesspool did For my part Im tired of being one of the silent partners of the saloon business he says and Im going to try how it feels to be a straight out clean cut np putrilthtP1oWbition This has come to be a political ques tion says he It has got to be looked at from the broad standpoint of public necessity If I insist on tho continuance of the saloon in order for mo to get my beer conveniently then I insist on aining the cesspool No cesspool no wiloon No saloon no beerunless you males it for yourself All r McGinty let er go The im w cares more for the gratification of hi private appetite for beer than harefor his country ought to crawl down sewer to stir him Anybodycan run n newspaper like he is doing All in the world he has to do is to brag on the Dem ocrats and abuse the Republicans and its a success every time But Bro Bell makes a point that I am glad of as it gives me an op portunity to explain It is that my paper recently shows that I have gotten from un der the influence of my wife that I promised should read my pr6of sheets and give it the gentleness that hangs like a heavenly halo aroundeverything that a woman like she is does In the first placo it proved not to be practicable for her to do so for she is eight miles in the drunken rut flans here to represent theta we take them up and put them in or in the Workhouse just as would any other ruffians These fellows might run over a little town like Frankfort but they could not come it over this place if we get the town into theI hands of the right kind of men and try to stop it I know how it is myself I was college boy in u small town A half dozen of us would undertake to have a little fun and there would exceptdeafstraight hours sleep front dewy eve to early morn any Saturday night nlldwe would all be fresh for church on Sunday And I have done it many a time But you let the boys of one ofI these colleges here cut up shines of that kind and they will find them selves jugged by the cops on Sun day morning and Monday morn ing they will find themselves in the Police Court under the glance of the Adonis or Apollo Belvidere who wears the ermine in that tern ofjustice There is one favorable feature in the opposition to the Capitols coming here bsuch a mUll as Mr and that is if the pour peo of the country find out that these big rich men dont want the Capitol here the poor white trawl the niggers will want it here just tilt spite until when the vote comes to he taken on it here on the 24th of November they will snow under Mr Sayre mold his peo by a million majority Fur TUrBlnJf Time Mystic Voynet O what is this trust this mission of life That Heaven
