Saturday by a Safe Majority TOTAL VOTE CAST WAS 641 The school election held on Saturday to establish a graded common school district in Earl ingt9n curried by a majority of 51 after u hard fought contest in which those who worked for the triumph of the school idea found It impossible to get to all the people of the district the reel L merits of the tnx proposition To the last a misapprehension existed in the minds of many as to what the proposed tax would mean in actual cost to them and many exaggerated and mislead ing stories were abroad that frialftoned any number of meu and women into the belief that the proposed tax would be a burdenThe total Vote cast was 041 up on the question Are you for or against the Graded Common Schoolux The votes in favor of the tax numbered 340 and the number cast against the tax was 295 The Board of Trustees elected were Dr A 0 Sink Paul M i Moore E L Wise W E Rash and Ernest Newton the votes for these trustees running from 882- toN850 When the polls opened at six r oclock Saturday morning there were a number of earnest women on hand ready to Vote for the Home and the Children as the badges read that were used for the day They began early and they worked till there was noth lug left to do when the polls closed at 4 oclock in the after noon And then they stood and waited auxiouply hopefully but with fear lest the majority might have been cast against the per petuation and the betterment of the Farlingtou School through the establishment of the graded school district When the announcement of the result was made there were 1 several hundred people for and the proposition around J1the school house and many Ve 1i hides that had been used to con qx vey voters to the polls The 6n tliusiasm of the school workers was unbounded findingexpres Mion in round after round of s cheers that were heard for near ly a mile away Then the ve 2 hides were loaded with ladies and a procession was formed and when cheering Main and Railroad streets The re joicing did not take the form of exulting over those who had op posed the movement but of re 11 joicing for the triumph of the School and the Home and the Children and that the victory AT CITY HALL Held by People Who are Against a The Graded School- Proposition ELDREDA DAVIS r CHOSEN CHAIRMAN A meeting was held last night initjhe City Hall by those who are not in favor of The Graded School in Earlington The room was well filled with those both for and against the school ques tion On a motion by Rev Jno Burden Dr Eldred a Davis wasYmade chairman When Dr Da vie took the chair he made a few remarks in regard to the manner in which the recent election was conducted and stated that some of the voters were intimidated by the ladies who were gathered about the voting place and that others were herded like cattle and driven to the polls He in timated that this was u free country and such high handed outrages against honor and jus ce ust cease He also made several other remarks along this line and ended up by saving he expected to lose both prestige and patronage by the stand he had taken in this mutter On motion oc Rev Bnrden the chair was authorized to name a com mittee to secure a lawyer to in vestigate the legality of the re cent election Before this com mitte was appointed however Paul M Moore asked for a few minutes time and said that there r would be no difficulty in any one seeing the vote registered last Saturday as the humblest citizen had a perfect right to go to the court house and examine the names of all who voted He also said in behalf of those Who voted for the school that they courted the fullest investi gation and would do alt in their power to assist in this work That if this election was not fair honest and honorable on their side they wanted to know it Mr Moore was vigorously ap plauded The chair then ap pointed the committee On mo tion of Bro Burden the chair was authorized to appoint anoth er committee to raise funds by popular subscription to pay the lawyer to do the necessary in vestigaing This committee was soon appointed and Bro Burden made a motion to adjourn and they adjourned All this hap pened in 12 minutes
