rating societies are be 4h ing founded to exploit the Back to the Fawn movement the gravest problem confronting the fnrnior IB how to keep young people on the farm rJt The lure of the city is felt even in the remotest rural com unities All young people arc i pleasureloving They demand J Recreation and if opportunities tt for social enjoyment do not pre sent themselves in their own Jcpcommuuity they are bound to seek them afar The opportunity for helpful i recreation and eujoyment pre sents itself in the new School SooialOonter movement In bygoue days the rural schools provided entertainment for the community in the form of spelling bees singing schools etc Gradually these recreations died out and there sprang up lyceums i tend lit erary societies both of which were helpful and inspiring to the young even though the oratory was crude and the knowledge of kt subjects und discussion limited Today the lyceum is a thing of the past and the country schoolhouse stands desolate and de x sorted during the Jong winter evenings and through the long mouths of vacation fiFarm children should be given judicIousrt This however is far from being csn the rule In many cases the teachers themselves lack proper t training and the equipment is it of the poorest kind Every rUe ral school should be provided with a good library for the bene y f fit of both the school and the ai community y The acquisition of knowledge 1from books is necessary but this t j b okknowled e does not in it self constitute au education far 1 educationto earn a living creates a desire for more knowledge makes civic duty plait and teaches Him or- t her the fundamental principles of universal brotherhoQd At present a very largo per cent of the business and profes w sional men including statesmen especially through the South and West are men who were reared on the farm or came from the the workshops of towns and vii lages The indications are that i a very large per cent of the lead ers of the future will come from i the same sources Therefore it iiiithe iibetter training than is being giv en them now Mauy of the ablest men of to i day have been hampered by lack toe rly training and nothing rtcan take the glace of this lost training If the state wants its I citizens to be puccessful prosperous and happy in the future I it must no longer neglect the early training of those who are to rtD about the conditions which will accomplish the de sired results ur best teachers should be sent to the rural schools earnest progressive men and women f Icapable of introducing into the r 1 work qualities which will arouse the young peoples enthusiasm ii and pet them thinking and in 1v t V r 1- i r 1 di t vesti rating along new lines of endeavorThe presents ideal conditions for the study of na ture and yet how many children n are taught the real fundamental facts of nature unfolding them selves all about themrhe per ennial miracle Of plant life is sn common and so constantly be fore them that they fail to see or take note of it An intelligent presentation of this wonderful l fact of resurrected life will arouse in the minds of the children new lines of thought and send them forth with eager feetr to make new li coveies The attention of the children should be directed to the wis provision made by trees and hardy plants for the coming of winter as at the first hint o the changing season they begin to store up carbon withdrawing from the leaves what the tree needs for its support during the winters cold and by the withdrawal of the sap hardening and protecting the limbs and branches J Such study naturally leads to the study of animals and na tines provision for their pro tection during the winter months as illustrated by the migration of birds etc The topics are endless Thus the children may be taught to realize the whole universe is a great living thinking feeling thinJrand back of it all is the One Life thobbing and pulsing through it With ntelligeril thought rightly presented the farm can be shown to be suchAsuwaderful storehouse of marvelous things Neat the boys and girls will for get the cities with their glitter lug allurements in their intense interest in things right at hand The School Social Center presents I the opportunity The schoolrooms should be thrown open for all kinds of meetings of an uplifting character including social functions holiday celebrations lectures musicals etc Certain branches of domestic gcience should be given a place in every country school curricu lum Few country housewives have ever been taught efficent dressmaking Why not employ a sewingteacher from some nearby city who understands her work thoroughly to given series of lessons at the School Social Center the classes to be attended by both mothers and daughterWhile most farmers wives are excellent coons few understand food values or food hygiene This branch of domestic science should be thoroughly taught by an expert dietician Then why not hold neighbor hood fairs andexhibitions where both domestic arts and farm products may be displayed thus arousing increased and enthusiastic interest in everyday wOrk Nor should the boys be neg lected A small building might be erected a goodWrpenter em ployed and a manual training class organized Lectures illus trating scientific farming might begivenTruly opportunity is knocking at the door of the Rural School Social
