myriad forges were alight in Catalonia and the ar mor of Castile was enabling a handful of men to seize the riches protected by many thousands of natives who had reached a high state of civilization but knew not the methods of manufacture ironAnd so it ever was and much as we may in theory and in sentiment regret the fact so it Is today We bear a great deal about the reasons for the rise of modern Germany as a world power It is worth noting that that country has risen rapidly into prom uenco as tho iron and steel output has increased by leaps and bounds In the olden days it was the same waste get on the admiration side und not on tho cynical and objurgatory side of life We be Hove that Is sensible says the Ohio State Journal Look On the bright side and if there is no bright side bur nlsh up tho dark side is a little quota tion that we put In our notebook than a score of years ago It is gob gospel It is the doctrine of hope Grumbling at everything is unChris tian it will condemn a man as sure as profanity or lying The Bible says But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice There Is philosophy for this A son cannot do any good In a bad spirit- It one hates a man he cannot reform him Every good thing that a man does pulls some evil up by tho roots Good deeds grow by smiles as tho wheat grows by the sunshine Boost the good nnd the bad will have a poor chanceIt right to curb the evil if one doe not wasto all his strength at ltso tha ho will have to sit down and lose heart There is no final defeat in an honest sincere effort and that is the doctrine of tho upward look and the bright sldo of life SHOE ODDITIES Two Pairs Are Sometimes Broken to Oblige Finicky Customers When a one legged man buys a shoo the dealer sends to tho factory for a shoe to match the one left remaining In these days of the use of machinery In every process of their manufacture shoes are mndo with the utmost exact ness and precision and It is easily pOSe sible to mate that remaining shoe with thegreatest nicety In size style ma terial und finish Few people havo feet exactly alike Commonly tho left foot is larger than the right so that one shoe may fit a little more snugly than the other Com monly however people buy shoes In regularly matched pairs tho difference in their feet if it Is noticeable to them at all not being enough to make any other course desirable But there are people who buy shoes of different sizes or widths in which case the dealer breaks two pairs for them giving them to fit their feet one shoe from each In such cases the dealer matches up the two remaining shoes one from each of two fairs just as bo would where he had broken ono pair to sell one shoo to a one legged man Halcyon Days The seven days preceding and the seven days following the winter solstice were called by the ancients halcyon days This ptiraso is derived from a fable which sets forth that Hal clone a princess who grieved so deeply for the loss at sea of her spouse was sent thither in pity in the form of a halcyon bird or kingfisher According to tho legend the halcyon bird had during the of breeding tho power of lulling the waves and it was be lieved at this time the sea was always calm and might be navigated In per feet security Experience of course f dispelled this fable but like many another old world story it has left behind it a distorted meaning In this cast the connection between the old and the now significance is clear for the term + once expressive of peaco and calm upon the waters Is equally expressive of tranquillity upon the sea of life The Lump Fish Did you ever hear of the lump fish Well its a peculiar species found In salt water This strange fish possesses a sucker formed by two ventral fins which are so shaped that when tho fish reclines on a rock the fins act an suckers and hold it firmly As soon as the eggs are deposited in shallow pits between stones the female feeling that she has done her part deserts them and the male at once assumes charge and guards the eggs until they hatch out and then tho young until they Ire able to take care of them selves In moving round ho is closely followed by tho numerous family which has given rise to tho term hen and chickens At times they arras a themselves to the sides of their parent by their sucking sks thus presenting- a singular appearance Elasticity of Conscience In the majority of cases conscience Is an elastic and very flexible article which will bear a deal of stretching and adapt Itself to a great variety of circumstances Somo people by prudent management and leaving It oft piece by piece like a flannel waistcoat In warm weather even contrive In time to dispense with it altogether butt there be others who can assume the garment and throw it off a pleas ure
