NO BODIES I One Man Blown From Bottom of Shaft 300 Feet to Surface CHIEF INSPECTOR NORWOOD NOW ON THE SCENE Joo Hollowelis body was found this morning and brough to tho Bur face The bodies of two of tho no gro minors woro located during tho night and brought out this morning but were not fully Identified so that the namo of tho miner not yot found cannot be stated Sudden and urgent calls by tole phone from Madisonvillo shortly be fore 780 oclock Sunday evening an nounced to Earlington mining men the disastrous explosion that had just occured in the mine of the Coil Coal Company located northeast of that place on the new L N out off Thos Long assistant mine in spector was notified and hurriedly prepared his oxygen helmets and other rescue apparatus for the trip to the scene though there was scarcely a hope that any of the five men who were in the mine could have survived the explosion Frank D Rash caught a train quickly and went to the mine where he spent the night assisting in the work of getting air down the shaft by use of the steam jet and the other work undertaken by the inspector and miRing men present The men who lost their lives were Hollowellnight boss white Lester Clements colored Chas New Will Hughes Leslie PetreeIIThe explosion occured just after these men had reached the bottom of the shaft for their night work The body of Will Hughes was blown from the bottom of the shaft and landed on the roof of the weigh Jt house in the pithead building well above the surface a distance of d4 more than sbo feet from the bottom Ladders in the air shaft man way F far down the shaft t as the debris would allow finding- II that the shaft was filled with wreck i ago to tho depth ot perhaps 16 or 20 t feet The conditions were such that 1f mining men expressed the belief that the clearlngof the shaft would be difficult and slow but every of r fort would be made to recover the p bodies of the victims as soon as possible tromIt rescue oat be sent to Madlsonvlllu 11 but tho response said the car was at Knoxville Tenn The usual night force is from 161to 18 men acid the report was at first current on the streets of Mad isonvillo that eighteen men had been lost Those who looted at the shaft fol lowing tho noise of the explosion saw much timber and debris flying high in the air Then a great mass of dense black smoke rolled out of the shaft and the air from the mine cleared iu a sport time Fortun ately no fire followed the explosion The damage cannot be estimated un til the wreckage is removed and the mine explored Mr Hollowell was formerly om ployed at the Victoria mine and was well known here He was about 21 years old and leaves a wife and one child Mrs Hollowell was so overcome by the news that her life was for a time almost despaired of Yesterday afternoon Assistant Inspector Long Thos Peyton H R Tweedle and others reached the bottom gf the main shaft and ex plored all the mine that was acces sible but were unable to locate any bodies which are now known to be burled under the debris and may be m the sump at the foot of the main shaft which is filled with wreckage of the shaft and mine Some eighty feet of the partition in the main shaft was torn out by the explQs Ipn The searchers found the bodies of all four of the mules that were in the mme Chief Inspector O J Norwood ar rived at Madisonvllle last eveningI and will direct the FAMILY TOOK REFUGE IN CELLAR Ben Robinson and family passed through another thrilling exper ience with a cyclone Sunday after noon when their home at KnobLIck Mo was again damaged this time the roof
