HEAVY CHARGE FIRED FROM ntDEPOT SECOND STORY t Arrest Made oresterday After Cottrt of Inquiry Judge4Bradley r Roy Blanks was shot Sunday afternoon at JNortonyille in a mysterious manner and although there were numerous persona in the immediate vicinity several very near him andthe shooting was done with a shotgun do one seemed to know who did it nor to a certamty where the shot came from Blanks was standing on the L N Railroad at the dopot while an L 0 freight train was run tying over the crossing nt the in tersectiqn of the two roads but a few feet away There were several men sitting on the L N steel rail near where he stood The gunshot was fired whIle the I 0 train roared past and the sound was hardly noticed but Blanks fell with the charge of B B shot in the back of his neck a shoulders a little low for in stant death One shot passed through his cheek Others were felt in Ins breast muscles having ranged downward from the rear and without force enough to pass through his body Smokeless powder was used and no one saw the discharge One theory is that the shot was fired by a man on the passing freight train Blanks refused to make any statement after the shooting He was partially paralyzed Blanks has been in serious trouble before and was under prom ise to court officials to stay out of Hopkins Oountpi He had been about Nortonville for a day or two before the area number of other minor precautIons that are important but all will agree I that the first essential is adequate I ventilation An unexpected outburst of gas from breaking into an old gas well or from the smaller hidden reservoirs In the coal ltselteaofc contributes a danger which it hat been found difficult to provideI against In many cases but against which every precaution should betaken In quite a number of mines the danger from gas has been reduced by an extension Of the entries far in advance of ordinary working operations and taking the gas from the coal in advance of the ordinary twining work without overloading with It the ordinary return air cur rents The lessons taught in the recent study of dust explosions are that the dust from practically all of the bl tuminous coals will explode under favorable conditions without any gas being present They have also- shown that a small gas explosion is one of the easiest ways of starting a dust explosion which if the mine is wet will be a local explosion from which many miners may es cape j or if the dust is dry and abundant there will be a genera I explosion extending to every part ot the mine and killing by its own violence or its poisonous gases all the men in the mine One of the important lessons taught by certain recent mine explosions is that the coal duet while thoroughly wet will not explode but that with modern ventilation ana especially during cold weather wet coal dust often becomes dry and dangerous within a few hours and that therefore the sprinkling of coal Iduat once a month or once a week only gives us safer conditions for a few hours immediately following the sprinkling Indeed sprinkling occasionally is often a useless anc dangerous practice as It does little or no good unless done thoroughly and frequently and It often tends to make us less careful in dealing with this halfdry or dry coal dust in be tween the periods of sprinkling and it never reacbes the other unused portions of the mines theIair current is by all means the most effective and cheapest way ot mois tening the coal dust during the cold weather This steam warms the inflowing air and saturates it with moisture which moisture is in turn deposited on and wets the coal dust in all parts of the mine where this air penetrates This method con tinues through the winter season the natural Sweating process which keeps the dust wet and helps to pre vent dust explosions during the summer season As far as possible the coal dust should be kept out of the mine And what canno t be removed should be kept wet either by liberal sprink ling or turning exhaust steam into the mine or keeping the coal dust mixed with fine soil dust ashes or stone dust The influence of stone dust in preventing or checking coal dust explosions is being carefully consid ered in France and other European countries In many mines the stone dust is considered more effective than water In this country stone dust has not passed beyond the ex
