Out of Business GREAT PERSONAL HARDSHIP BESIDES HEAVY BLOW TO BRITISH TRADE London March 9A million and a half workers idle the industry of the country threatened with corn plete paralysis if the conditions do not change the price of bread and other foodstuffs advancing thousands already feeling the pangs of hunger children going without breakfast to school great tbeltI properties going to ruin ability to prevent their deterioria tlon the railway service reduced to a minimnmrtbat is the condition of things In England Scotland and Wales and the coal strike Is only nine days old- MeaOwhtIe the miners are making the most ef their holiday They have a dig fund out of which every striker IB receiving something rang lug downward from ten shillings a weekSo far there have been practically no disorders Instances of surliness are reported however and one case has attracted attention It Involves the refusal of the miners in the Whltburn colliery at South Shields to permit anybody to descend into tho pits to feed the ponies and work the pumps to prflventilooding of the mines This is a direct violation at the instructions from the Federation of Miners which allowed the em ployment of miners during the strike lor these purposes The officials of one mine where the men declined to obey the orders of the Federatiot managed to get 460 ponies to the surface from their home under ground for the last twentyfive years Engineers who were permitted by the Federation to remain on duty refused to work in many places aud- It is feared the mines have bees ruined by floods Bread to Advance London thus far has not felt tin pinch of the strike The price 01 bread is to be advanced March 11 and other foodstuffs are higher while coal is at exorbitant rates The railway facilities have also bees curtailed dut actual suffering on thE part of any large section of the pop ulation has not appeared Else where in the United Kingdom con dltlons are different Appeals to thE municipal authorities invoke thE law for feeding Indigent children indicate that the effects of nonem ployment are being felt in some lo entitles One of tho worst features of thE strike is the effect on other indus tries than coal News comes dally from all quarters of the kingdom oj the shutting down of great steel hoptin plate cotton and pthei works on which British prosperity is dependents Even Ireland which has no toll U beginning to suffo iudireaClyeand the suspension o- curtattmegtpt water t n i tlol I to from rest of theklngdou I I promljss to fsulg la seen suffrz ibg obU A r dtlnahi Governments hopes to end the strike but there is some hope in the miners convention which will meet In England March 12 Whatever might have been the Ministrys original idea of adjusting the differences between the mine owners and minors dy drastic methods it is now sjpparant that Mr Asquith and his colleagues in tho Cabinet realize the danger of the expedient of making the minimum wage a principle of the law of the land The coal owners have reached a point where they view the case philosophically They fool that the harm already has been done and that little can be added to their bur den Its continuance for several weeks m their opinion will mean that much of the carrying trade will be lost to Great Britain permanently Trade Will be Lout They instance the failure to re gain ascendancy in trade once it has been diverted and point to the fact that London has not succeeded in recapturing its position since the dockers strike The whole ship ping industry of the kingdom is in a stateof stagnation already and the coal owners argue the foreign countries which are taking advantage of this situation are bound to hold a large proportion of the water trans portation which Great Britain con trolled up to March 1 Another thing which will have an important bearlug an British Indus try is that collieries which hereto fore have been run at a loss will not be opened after the strike D A Thomas the leader ot the Welsh coal owners indicated the reason for the refusal of the Welsh and Scotch mine proprietors to follow the colleagues in the rest of the kingdom and accept the principle ol the minimum wage and otherwise show a compromising spirit when he said that even if legislation were enacted to give the Governments proposals effects that wonld not prevent a recurrence of the present disastrous dilemma within a few months He regards the strike as a war against the state and said the only remedy was legislation similar to what bad been enacted by some of the colonies making it a criminal offence to conspire against the well I being of the community The Gov- ernmentt is being urged to take some l such step with the addition of the I legal right to attach the funds of the conspirators I To The Public I am in the Automobile Contest and hope to win but I cannot do so without the as sistance of friends I ask that anyone who is not specially interested in the contest and r who has not pledged their votes will vote them for No 173 Anything you can dc will be greatly appreciated JAMES B GAINED DaSvsori Ky t 1UESDAY4t JIF reik 8U8 arHAWSONYILiE VICTORY TO FIFTH ANNIVERSARY The Elks celebrated their fifth Anniversary Friday night Mar 8 as is the custom by a big dance which was one of the best dances ever given at the Elks home The last dancers left about five oclock and in about thirty minutee James Williams the custodian of the home dis covered the fire raging in the library The fire alarm was turned in and the fire department was doing good work in about twenty minutes The house was so full of smoke it was almost impossible to save any of the furniture except that in the parlor and that was great ly damaged The Efecond floor where the fire started was dam aged most and a hole burnedrnthrough the center of the dance hallMr Roy Wilson Secetary for the Elks who was elected for the i fourth term a short while ago lost all his records but they can be straightened out by a few weeks hard work The loss is estimated at betwe-en 0000 and 8000 The w insurance on the building was 12500 t The fire is supposed to have caught from a cigar
