Mr. Atkinson has ever been a strong snpporterof schools and' of every worthy educational movement within his reach. Besides establishing the policy of substantial support by hi company to the common graded and high schools of Earliugton, he has aided many other educational and moral undertakings. One of his good works along school lines is represented by a school that bears his name, Atkinson College, at Madi6onville, for the practical and industrial education of negro youths, which school ho has largely supported. There stand, also', as monumeuts to his purpose and desire aloug this line, two splendid, modern common graded aud high school buildings at- Earliugton, which were built and equipped entirely at the cost of his compauy and have been and are being largely helped inthe matter of annual support in Jthesame way. It - tbepreviois week. Mr. Atkinson had been in a serious condition of health since the early months of 1910, with an ailment that rarely occurs and hatf never been cured, known to science as lymphatic leukaemia. That he survive.d so long is attributed to his strictly cleau life and pure morals from childhood up. K That this insidious ailment should have overtaken him at the age of seventy, in the apparent prime of his life, is explained by leaders of tho medical profession, in Kentucky aud the East as be jnu the result of his extremely BtreuuoUB, mental aud physical life. He was always an Indefatigable1 worker, possessed of excellent- physique, strong and commanding will power, quick and sure judgment, aud great nervous energy But his interests,. personal and material, were so broad and so diverse that the twouty four hour day was all too shortjn which to compress the things he did for the business interest he .represented, for this many employes, for fits friends, and for humanity. His first wife was Sarah Abb Black, of MN Holly, N. J., who he married May 28rd, 1867 and who died in' November 1000.
