BERNARD MINING COMPANY j (Continued from P,. Vwe J in IKS . r- r are now studying strictly utilitarian phases of life. We have in Kentucky many important Goal Companies. One of those has Jon managed in a mtnnar that I think in its business management and in its own foresight presents a lesson of usefulness to every State. It was mentioned here tliat in the production of coil it had cost about sevenlives to every million tons. This company, in ten viars. has produced annually 1,100.000 tons, with only one life lost. This company bought great areas of laud. A State Com missioner of a great State mentioned that they had planted a million young trees. This one compauy has alone planted on its laud one milliDn walnut trees and about a quarter of a million locusts, ijutalpa and poplar or tulip trees in the past few years. (Applause) This information is from a paper, which I shall submit, by Mr. .John B. Atkinson, one of my associates and advisors here, aud a very useful onej who perhaps, gave me the only good thought that Kentucky could bring here." y He was greatly interested in educational work and did more for this cause than any other one man in the county, the substantial school buildings of this city and the splendid educational facilities here and at other towus where St. Bernard mines are located were brought about by his efforts. He was oue of the most liberal patrons of Atkinson college, of Madisonville, a spleudid school for the colored people. Although Mr. Atkinson left his family in good circumstances he wa3 not what the world calls a wealthy man in the modern acceptation of the word. He gave large sums each year to charity and the n umber and extent of his every day benefactions will uever No worthy individual ever applied to him for assis Jbe known. y V ' tarice in vain. His record as nuf employer of men is unparalellod, hi3 universal fairness his considerate sympathy and kindness won the' confidence of all his employees aud as a result they were loyal aud true to him aud his iutereBts? The fact that in all the years he has been connected with the company there has never been a strike or trouble of any kind is proof emphatic of this statement. Several years ago Mr. Atkinson begnn surrounding himself with an able corps of lieutenants, men who came from the ranks, who have grown up with the business and who under his training have learned every detail of each department, who have always worked in harmony with his master mind aud now that he has passed off the staue of action are fully capable and determined to carry on the iness of this great company without friction or confusion, along the lines so successfully followed by him. He was greatly beloved by every citizeu of this place and hundreds of friends and acquaintances elsewhere and his death is a distinct loss to this community. Memorial services will beheld in the Temple Theatre and in new colored Baptist church Sunday morning at llo'olock. It is intended that the services shall occur at the same hour his funeral services are held in Wrightstown.
