wan Invited Into the meeting and the question was fully discussed with him Prof Reubens said he would not object to waiving the ex elusive feature of the contract with his school so that the tuition con trait might bo extended by the load to other qualified schools of the county provided he and the principals of the Dawson Springs Hanson and Earllngton schools could confer and reach an agree meat great National Mine Safety Demonstration to be held in Pittsbnrg Pa October 26 and 27 under the auspices of theFed eral Bureau of Mines the American Red Cross the Pittsburcr Coal Operators Association and the United Mine Workers of America The date which was originally set for September 16 has been changed so that President Taft may bo present on the second day October 27 to witness a mimic mine ex plosion in a temporary steel gallery on Forbes field an exhibition of rescue work by helmeted miners following an explosion and to re view the parade of miners The President will make an ad dress and A movement was undertaken by the County Board of Education at its meeting yesterday having as its purpose he extension to a full six months term a number of common sohoolsin Hopkins county that have in the past been taught for shorter terms because theper capita in those districts was not sufficient to pay a teacher longer The result of a res olution offered by Paul M Moore and amended at suggestion of Mr Harland a committee was named consisting of Supt Fox BL Frank lin and J L OBryan to Investigate the financial condition of the Board and to see Jlt is expedient and possible to put into effect this year the provisions asked for by the original resolution The resolution offered by Mr Moore follows Xeiolutioa V Whereas i There are free public schools In Hopkins county which have in the past been taught tor pe nods of less than six 6 months la one school year and Whereas i Section 4864 Kentucky Statutes In defining the termCom mon Sohool says No school shall be deemed a common school within the meaning of this chapter or be entitled to any contribution out of the school fund unless the same has been pursuant hereto actually kept by a qualified teacher for six months in all subdistricts dur lug the same school year And at which every child fntbe in thja district between the v ages of six and twenty years 1f has had the pr vJle e ofttending whether contribJitltiBr towards defraying tbe expen see or not And J a i Whereas It is clearly agaiast the law for any common Beboel to be taught for Itise period thaaislx r months or under circnmvtaaeea that render imposlblethe out of the county school levy Resolved That to facilitate the purposesof this resolution a com mittee of three shall now be named to consist of the Chairman ef this Board and two members thereof to be namedby him and that this committee is given full peeler to arrange with teachers and to do asp other thing necessary to carry oat this resolution and that all necessary expenses of this committee shall be met by this Board Mr Harlands ameudent modified the duties of the committee as stated above Mr Moore made argu ment in support of his resolution and produced court decisions and opinions by the State Superinten dent of Publlo Instruction and by the AttorneyGeneral He argued that while the Board was expend ing the tax levy for many new School houses and almost wholly upon material things
