Williams and his associates from the U S Rescue Gar No 5 wns one of the most interesting and instructive things that the people of Earlington have experienced hit Williams lecture was accompanied by a- very enlightening series of tures thrown on the screenWhich he explained in detail to the large and very much interested audience Hecovered the quos tion of loss of life in the mines and of the methods andmachin R ery for rescue work the experi ments and the practical demon tration of life saving which the Department of Mines is making J already in the more favored and important mining sections of the efvntry pf which BSarlingtpn is opt of the first dealtwith the oration of various kinds of pow a aotbr e j VtlrlbCiW edthe different methods ot testy I ing the explosive force of gas and dust the use of oxygen helmets and various other things torching the miners occupation I andthe safe operation of a coal mittelODe interesting point brought out by Mr Williams showed the relative Safety of coal operations in Hopkins county coal mines In showing a dia grim illustrating the loss of life in coal mines of various counties he called attention to the rate in Belgium as the lowest in any country producing any consider able ooal tonnage and said the figures he bad been given on the St Bernard group of mines put this group in the same clues with Belgium This notwithstanding that thejoss of life in coal mines i in the United States is far and away greater than in any other country Mr Same displayed the oxygeu helmet and went through the form oft rescuing Tom Peyton who the part of a miner f overcomeby afterdamp The pulmoter was used in this illustration and was most interesting in its wonderful process of filling + the lungs with oxygen and ex haueting them automatically h producing artificialrespiration e This machine adjusts itself to the capacity Pf the bugs and can he used in resuscitating adult or obildfMr Powell gave anlot testng aeries of
