In these chapters we see many of his wiles and may loam from Neliemiali, comfort of Jehovah, how to stand aRitinst them (I'ph. l, 11). 0. "Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God and pet a watch against them dny and night." Nchemlnh was n mnn of God nnd thctoforc a man of prayer (chnplers 1, J; II, !), lint, while Ids lit God nnd his whole relistrength ance upon Him, he failed not to use the w Ithin his reach. Our Lord taught mentis His disciples to watch as well as pray (Mnik xlv, SS). In Hnh. vl, 11, 13 we are tnttght thnt the whole minor of God la necessary, mat we may be nute to stand Hc.ilnst the evil one. As we saw la last lesson, Nchemlah strengthened hint self in God by His word. Then he en eouraged the people by telling them cf the hand of God upon him (II, 17, 18), nnd so priests, Levites, rulers, goldsmiths, apothecaries, merchants nnd also women went to work, web, repairing over ngainst their own house, nnd so half the wall was bulldcd, for the people had n mind to wotk uhapters iil nnd lv, 0). 10. "And Judah snld, We are not nble to build tho wall." It Is bad enough to have enemies outside to contend with, but when thoso who aro within the fold or the family get discouraged It makes matters mote dillictilt. In chapter ill, 5 we rend that the nobles of the Tekoitea put not their necks to the work of tho Lord, but here Is a leading tribe, the one from which our Lord came (Heb. vii, 14), talking of much rubbish and no strength for the work. If Nchemlnh had uot been staid upon Jehovah (II, 20), he might have been sorely discouraged. 11, 12. Not only did the adversaries keep threatening that they would cause the work to censo, but tho Jews who dwelt by them beenme filled with fears. Contrast Isa. xli, 0. "They helped every one his neighbor, nnd every ono said to his brother. Ho of good courage." In the story of Gideon all the people who were fearful nnd afraid were sent home (Judges til, 3). The Lotd wants His people to be strong nnd of good courage (Josh. I, C, 7, 1); Hag. II, 4). 13, II. "He not ye afraid of them. tho Lord." Ho appointed the people to their places fully armed nnd encournged them with such words as these. In Isa. li, 12, 13 we hare the words, "Afraid of n man, nnd forgcttcst tho Lord, thy Mnker." And in Isa. xli, 2, "Behold God Is my salvation; I will trust and tint be nfrnid." If we arc afraid, we arc forgetting God nnd not trusting in Him. When we rely upon Him, we cannot bo nfrnid. Tho weapons of our wnrfnrc nrc not carnal, not swords and spears nnd bows, but might, through God to the pulling down of strongholds (II Cor. x, 4). We have the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation nnd the sword of the Spirit lEpli. vl, ill, 17). 13. "God brought their counsel to naught. We returned nil of us to the wall, every one unto his work." Tho Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to naught. He mnketh the devices of the people of none effect. The counsel of the Lord fctandeth forever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations (I'k. xxxiii, 10, 11). See also Isa. xiv, 24; xlvl, 10. 10. "While somo wrought In the work others held the weapons, ready for an emergency. Although uot written In Scripture, It Is Scripturally truo tlint They nlso serve who only stand and wait. And it is written thnt, "As his part Is that gocth down to the battle, so shall his part bo that tnrrieth by the stuff they shnll part nlikc (I Sam. xxx, 24). 17 "With one of his bands wrought In the work, nnd with the other hand held a weapon." Thus did the builders and tho burden beareis as they wrought In the work nnd were not terrified by their udvirsatlcs (Will. I, 28). Llko David, they prepared with all their might, and set their nftVctlou to the work (I Cron. 2, 3). I.Ike Ilezeklah, they did It with all their heart nnd prospcreJ (I hen tho enemy sought On n. xxxl, 21). to entice Nchemlah nway, seemingly, for a coufoteiice, but really to do him harm, he was lid to ccud them this woid, "I am doing n great work, so that I cannot come dun-tt- , ' Four times they sent unto him after llilii sort, but he always answered after the same manner (chapter vl, 3, Ij. In due time tho wall was finished, and tho enemies were much cast down In their own eyes, for they perceived that tho work was wrought of God. Had tho wall been built by skilled mnbons the ctedit would lune been theirs, but when such unlikely people as apothecaries, goldsmiths, etc., built such n wall they could not but see that God did It. This was particularly the caso when men misunderstood or failed to understand Him nnd His mission. To Thomas, who had failed to grasp Christ's mission, Ho illustrated it by saying, "I am tho way." To thoso who falsely thought that tho bleisinga Ho was to bring men teuiiwral nnd carnal Ho hero describes Himself ns tho truo Bread, tho living Bread from heaven. Ho was uot to feed tho body by multiplying loaves nnd fishes, but waa to satisfy tho longings of tho soul by Himself. What Ho means by Himself as tho Bread of lifo Is simply that ns bread food is necessary "to tho physical lifo nnd Is nblo to satisfy and sustain tho physical l'fo, so Ho lo necessary to tho lifo of tho soul, nblo to satitfy Its cravings aud ablo to sustain it forover. Note 1. Tho philosophy of 'bread In its rotation to life. That bread snstnius lifo Is indisputable. Tho man who ceases to cat soon censes to live. But how bread sustains tho lifo ennuot lo explained. Wo may follow tho food in its changes in tho human system, but just when or juet how tho food wo eat becomes our lifo no scientist can explain. Wo know tho fact, but tho philosophy of it is unknown. Nor can we tell how Christ satisfies and sustains tho lifo of tho soul. This fact has led ninny to refuse to ncccpt Christ. But such n courso is as foolish as it would bo for ono to to cat food bocauso ho does not know how tho food becomes his lifo. Wo know that Christ docs sustain spiritual lifo. Without Him tho soul languishes nnd dies, now Ho becomos our Bread of lifo wo need not worry nbont, so long as wo know that no does satisfy all our spiritual longings. 2. Bread in its application to life. 1. Bread to sustain lifo must bo cat-eWo must actually partako of food beforo it can becomoour life. Tho mero possession of tho richest abnndanco of food will not keep us alivo unlecs wo partako of tho food. Tho C. 000 had to actually eat of tho loaves nnd fishes thoy wcro satisfied nnd filled. So Christ must bo actually partaken of ho can sustain tho spiritual lifo within us. It is not enough that Qod Wo has provided thu living Bread. must partako of it, wo must actually accept Christ and feed upon Him by faith. 3. Bread to sustain lifo must bo eaten constantly. Tho craving onco satisfied, soon returns uud must bo satisfied again, So wo must bo in constant communion with Christ, if ho is to sustain our spiritual lives. A Sabbath communion with Christ, n quarterly communion with Christ will not sufilce daily, hourly, momentarily, wo should bo in closo touch and communion with Christ, tho living Bread. Let ns keep in constaut communion with Christ by prayer, by daily study of His word nnd by n constaut indwelling of tho Holy Ghost, that Ho may be tho Broad of Lifo to our souls. Biblo Readings.
