Ths purpose of the rebels was to cut the communication maintained by llneout and Jmus by means of the road between those places at a point between linns nnd the east bank of the river. The insurgents had trenches along the west bank, commanding the open spaces. A force of 1,500 rebels attacked Jmus Monday, and COO proceeded against Bacoor with detachments alcng the river. Yesterday morning Col. Dagget's force spread along the road from s toward Imus, and three of the Fourth regiment, under Cnpt. Uollls, were thrown out from Imus, the two commands forming a Junction. It is told in the ponitontiary at Eddyvillo, by tho officials of that institution, each of whom wears a largo photographic Goebol button on the lapel of his coat, and passed around generally on the outside. The story is that General Taylor stated that tno Jiddyvillo pern tentiary was unhealthy for tho reason that the "backwaters of tho Cumberland river arose in tho cells of that institution." It is folly to believe any sane man should make such a statement. but in a heated campaign most partisans aro guilty of some foil v. Tho hill on which the penitentiary is located is about 5J00 feet above the highest high water mark. General Taylor made no such statement and the most ho said on the subject was to read from Governor Brown's message to tho Kentucky Legislature where he said to that body that 'a million dollars had boon sunk in that institution and that it was so surrounded by water that you could only get to it in a skiff.' And further, that tho cells were po built that 'air had to be pumped into them to make them tenable.' These statements were literally true at the time. General Taylor was simply proving some Democratic mistakes by the official utterances of a Democratic governor then in high favor with his party. But people should be able to exercise just a little reason in accepting or rojectiiifj campaign stories. Tho moon is not yet proven to bo made of green cheese. "After these thluus did King Ahasu-cm- s promote Unman, the son of the Agngltc, and advanced him and set his scat above all the princes that were with lilm." This wicked man and other wicked men, placed In positions of poner and authority, make us think of Dan. lr, 17, "The Most HIrIi ruleth la the kingdom ot men and Rlvrtli It U whomsoever He will and Rpttrtli up over It tUc hasoKt of men." We have seen In tho book of Kzra how the enemies of Qod and Ills people were permitted to prosper up to a certain point, but were In due time overcome. In this book of Esther we see the enemy prospering wonderfully for a time, hut sudden and fearful was his downfall. 2. "And all the king's servants that were In the king's gate bowed and reverenced Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him, but Hordecal bowed not uor did htm reverence." Here Is a man who, like Daniel and his friends, fears not the face of man because he fears Qod, nnd to an enemy of Qod he will not bow, let the result bo what It may. Because ot Amalck's rebellion against God and Ills people it had been determined to blot out the remembrance of htm from under heaven (Ex. xvll, 10; Had Mordcca! bowed Deut. xxv, to Human he would have done so to nn enemy of Qod, and this be would not do. 8. "Then the" king's servants which were In the king's gate said unto Why transgressest thou the king's These servants knew commandment?" Like the Jews no king but Ahasucrns. in the time of Christ, they would say, king butiCaesar (John xix, Wo havo no IB). How many who bear the name of Christian would have to confess If they Bpoke truly? O Lord, our God, other Lords besides theo have dominion over us (Isa. xxvl, 13). Many there aro who break tho first commandment, Thou shalt have no other gods before me (Ex. xx, 3). Mordecal could truthfully say: The Lord Is my lawgiver, the Lord Is my judge, the Lord Is my klug. lie will save me (Isa. xxxill, 22). i. "Now, it came to pass, when they spake dally unto him and he hearkened not unto them, that they told Unman to sec whether Mordccal's matters would stand, for he had told them that he was a Jew." Mordecal was established and therefore unmoved by the con hiual words of the king's servants. He believed God, for that Is the only way to be established (II Chron. xr, 20; Isa. vll, 0). The word for us Is, Bo ye thcrefoio steadfast, unmovnble, always nboundlns in the work of tho Lord (I Cor. xv, 53). We should say with Paul: With me It Is a very small thing that I should be Judged of you or ot man's judgment. He that judgeth me Ih the Lord (I Cor. Iv, 3, 4). 5. "And when Ilaman saw that Mordecal bowed not nor did him reverence then was ITnninn full of wrath." Just so did Nebuchadnezzar act when Daniel's friends bowed uot to him. It Is all ot satan when any one wants to be worshiped or reverenced Instead ot giving all the glory to God. He wanted even the Son of God to worship him (Math, iv, 0), and his followers have the same spirit, making out that they are some great ones to whom others must bow down (Acts v, 30: vlll, 0). This spirit, which has been so fully seen since they said at Babel, Let us make ts a name (Gen. xi, 4), shall be finally and most fully seen la the antichrist, or man of sin, or lawless one or the last days (Dan. xi, SO, 37; II Thess. II. 4, B, etc). 0. "And be thought scorn to lay hnnJs wherefore Haon Mordecal oloue, man sought to destroy all tho Jews." Death is the devil's weapon (Hnb. II, 14). Therefore Coin killed Abel, Pharaoh killed the male children of Israel, Herod killed the babes In Bethlehem, and so It goes and will go till the last cncmy.death, shall be destroyed (I Cor. xv, 20). It Is the nature of the wicked to watch the righteous and seek to slay him, but the Lord will not suffer it unless It Is for the highest good nnd greatest glory of thj righteous (Ps. xxxvii, 32, 33). 7. It would seem from this verse, when compared with chapter "Ix, that for about a year Haman was plotting and planning the destruction of the Jews. It is said ot the wicked that they devise mischief upon their beds and set themselves In a way that Is not good (Pa. xxxvl, 4). It is bad enough when enemies speak evil of us, whisper together against us and devise our hurt, but It is wcrsc it those who were our familiar frleuds turn against us, yet even that U but a phase of our fellowship with Christ (Ps. xii, John xv, 20, 21). 8. "And Haman said unto King Thero Is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people la all the provinces of the kingdom, and their; laws arc diverse from all peoplo; neither keep they the king's laws. Therefore It Is not for the king's profit to suffer them." Thus were tho Jews slandered to the king when the temple was being bullded (Ez. vl, 12, 13). The testimony against Paul and Silas was, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city and teach customs which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Itomnns (Acta xvi, 20, 21). But nothing was ever said about any one quite so bad as that which our Lord's enemies said about Him', the pure and holy Lamb ot God. 0. "If It please the king, let it be writ, ten that they may bo destroyed, and I will pay 10,000 talents of silver to the hands of those that havo the charge of the business to bring It into the king's treasuries." What a truly devilish plot this was to destroy thousands of peoplo so as to bo avenged upon Mordecal! 10. "And the king took his ring from his hand and gave It unto Ilaman, t'uo son ot Hammcdatba, the Agagtte, the Jews' enemy." Thus the doom of tho Jews seemed about to be accomplished by tbelr enemy, but Qod was watching and saying: Thus far shalt thou come. Klns and rulers may set themselves and tako counsel together ngainst the anointed of tho Lord, but He that sltteth In the heavens shall laugh. The Lord shall have them In division (Ps. II, 11. "And the king said unto Haman, The silver Is given to thee, the people also, to do with them as It scemeth good to thee." Shall God allow His people thus to be given Into the hand of tho enemy? Sometimes He does, for He said concerning Israel, I have given the dearly beloved of my soul Into tho hand ot ber enemies (Jcr. xlt, 7). 1. Ham-medath- a, 17-10-). Mor-deca- l, , 5-Ahas-uerus, 1ST. So doing, gentlemen ot the commission, you can reassure a disturbed people. So doing you can go far to counteract the evil consequences that must otherwise follow the appointment of two or three Goebel men on everyone of the 119 county election boards. The Issues Involved are too serious to be In doubt for a moment. acThe consequences ot tions may prove most momentous. Tho action of the Fayette commission Is at once a threat and a menace.
