Those who owned their own farms and lost everything, as Is the case with most of them, are allowed to draw their rations direct. D. Ss Cage, n prominent citizen of Itrookshlrc, has ordered u car load of cottonseed, which he proposes to give to all who will plant and undertake to cultivute the crop. He says, moreover, that crops of cotton, sorghum, Kafllr corn, June corn and potatoes can be raised If these people had the seed,.bul they havo neither seed nor money, and ha suggests that contributions of seed would help them. These crops would enable them to have until the beginning of next year, when they would be able to draw supplies from the merchants on their prospective crops. There are rations enough nt Drookshlre to last for a week or more. Along the Urazos alone it Is estimated that more than 10,000 negroes have lost everything. The management of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company has never been active, and has no desire to be active in what is termed "politics," except to protect, so far as possible, these important interests against oppressive legislation and unjust enforcement of the law. It will at once be eliminated as a factor in politics when assured by all parties that its interests will be treated fairly and given reasonable protection. It is neither Democratic nor Republican. Senator Goobel has for many years been a successful speculator in damage claims for personal in juries. In the pursuit of this busi ness he is said to have amassed a fortune. For about fifteen years he has been a legislator, and during that period has exerted himself with more or less success to secure the enactment of legislation unjustly affecting the interests of corporations, and, in some instances, adapted to promote his personal interests. Senator C. C. The Bank of Louisville, the oldest banking institution in that city, is about to go into liquidation because it is being taxed beyond the point of a possible profit. With Goebel for Governor, with his inleanings, tense and with his followers in the saddle, there would be little hope of further development of the State's resources or the profitable operation of corporations which arc aggregations of brains and ability as well as money and which have thus far developed our resources. Goebel is already out in an interview concerning the Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company in which he says in answer to the question, "State specificially what you intend to do with the Louisville & Nashville" he says: "I will drive them out of the constructively speaking. State, They want war, and I will give them war to the death." f I, wise. 3 I. But when the younger brother draws a revolver and begins shooting at the elder at short range, the elder has to decide pretty quickly whether his life is worth more to mankind than that of his homicidal kinsman. Common-weal(h- s Attorney J. Edwin Rowc. K4V"1 1 The Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company has done something for the development of the material interests of the State of Kentucky, and would like to do more. It is trying, as best it can, to furnish facilities which its management would like to provide, although there is, at present, little prospect that it can be done without for many years incurring a direct loss. It has no desire to participate in politics, and if treated fairly by all parties it would not care who is Governor of. the State of Kentucky, or who is Mayor of the city of Louisville. The foregoing being a rather brief statement of the facts of the present situation, the question arises, do they justify the Courier-Journin not only renouncing its former friendly feeling for this company, but in declaring war against it? Because the officers and employes of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company are opposed to the election of Senator Goebel to the office of Governor and Senator McChord to the office of Railroad Commissioner of this district, the Courier-Journcharges that the company has thrown "itself into the field of partisan politics," and is, therefore, no longer entitled to the friendship and support of the Courier-Journagainst "unreasoning enemies and mercenary demagogues," but, on the contrary, is deserving of, and must be prepared to receive the enmity of that paper, and is put upon notice will join that the Courier-JournGoebel and other "unreasoning enemies and mercenary demagogues" in destroying its property and in "driving jt out of Kentucky politics." "You see,, whenever a street band or a hand organ strikes up that tune there are always sure to be two or three street gamin3 around, boys and girls both, who immediately proceed to do the Cakewalk. They dorit so well and so comically, too, that when the music stops and the daacing with it, the onlookers drop their coins in the hats of the kids, and when the collector for the musicians comes around all he gets is the icy hand. ' a blue-coa- - Robbers succeeded in forcing an entrance into W. R. Coylo's store Monday njght, by digging out bricks in the rear wall of the house and making a hole large enough to admit the passage of a person. There were evidently two connected with the robbery and they succeeded in making a very good haul. Mr. Coylc estimated the loss at something like 300. They secured shoes, shirts, jewelry, etc., and some clothing. The rifling of the store was done quickly, no doubt, as everything was scattered considerably the next, morning. The robbery was not discovered until early Tuesday morning, when some one, in passing the rear of the store, noticed the holo in the wall, and immediately notified Mr. Coyle. The robbers succeeded in making good their escape, and there was no trace of them, with the. exception that a white man and a negro were put off of a freight train at Nortonville, Tuesday morning before day. They seemed to have several boxes of shoes with them, besides other booty, and probably wcre;the guilty pnes. IS IT RIQHT The death of Mrs. E. D. E. N. Southworth has revived many anecdotes of her life. "The Hidden Hand," which Mrs. Southworth wrote as a serial, was the only one of her works that was dramatized, and many years ago it was quite popular on the stage, being the forerunner of many of the sensational melodramas now popular in Mrs. a certain class of theaters. Southworth was a great friend of the Poet Whittier, and it is not generally known that she gave him the suggestion for his famous poem, "Barbara Frietchie." One of the most cherished letters in Mrs. Southworth's large collection is one from "Whittier, in which he thanks her for the inspiration of his poem, and tells her that it is to appear in the next number of the Atlantic. The poet's letter was as follows: "Aursburv, 9 Mo. 8, 1863. "My Dear Mrs. Southworth: I heartily tbankjtbee for thy very kind letter, with its enclosed message. It ought to have fallen to better bands, but I bave Just a little ballad of 'Barbara written Freilcbie,' which will appear in the next Atlantic. Missouri crop is much below an average in quantity, and quality not fully reported. Kansas crop is a poor one with many acres not harvested. Spring wheat is from two to three weeks late with prospects favorable for a full yield on an average acreage. Threshing in this State was well under way at close of the month. The yield is light as previously indicated, and, generally speaking, results are short of expectations. A few early crops that escaped damage from fly and rust are yielding well. The quality is superior as a rule. The average yield per acre is 8.2 bushels. For the past three years the estimated average yield per acre was, for 1898, 13 bushels; 1897, 12 bushels; 1896, 6f$ bushels. By sections the average yield is, for western, 7.2 bushels; central, 10.2; southeastern, 7 bushels. Winter wheat harvest - S. Chinch buns ere present in a number of counties but the damage is confined to cornfields adjacent to helds of wheat. There is a considerable acreage of very late corn as a result of failure to secure a stand and the planting of abandoned tobacco fields to corn. Cultivation was retarded early in the season but later was pushed vigorously. Corn is now clean, but the excessive cultivation necessary to clear it of weeds has left it in poor condition to withstand the dry weather now prevalent, except in sections that have been relieved by local show Fruit prospects have declined as the season advanced. Pears have still a fair per cent of fruit remaining. Apples have dropped badly, and the outlook at present is for half crop. Early apples are ripe but inferior in quality. The crop of wild blackberries is small in yield and very inferior in quality. Lucas Voore, Commissioner of Apiculture. CURES WHERE ALL OTHERS HAVE FAILED. Tubes, by Mail, 76 cents; bottles, 60 Cents.
