with an- 1editorthe odds arc much too great nevertheless I venture to call in question some of the statements contained In an editorial published in the issue of the Cour ierJournal of the 1St inst and in vite attention to some erroneous cenclusionsThe of the Louis ville and Nashville Railroad Company has never participated in partisan politics The transporta tion interest is an important one and is entitled to the lull protec tion of the lawmaking judi cial and other departments of government It is entitled to a hearing and its representatives have the right to vote in other words participate in the government and unquestionably have the right to defend the interests they represent when such interests are attacked The management of the Louisville Nashville Rail road Company has never been active and has no desire to be act ive in what is termed politics except to protect so far as possible these important interests against oppressive legislation and unjust enforcement of the law It will at once be eliminated as a factor in politics when assured by all parties that its interests will be treated fairly and given reasonable protec tion It is neither Democratic nor RepublicanSenator Goobel has for many years been a successful speculator in damage claims for personal in juries In the pursuit of this business lip is said to have amassed a fortune For about fifteen years he has been a legislator and during that period has exerted him self with more or less success to secure the enactment of legislation unjustly affecting the interests of corporations and in some instances adapted to promote his personal interests Senator C C McChord having a personal grievance has for that or other reason cooperated with Senator Goebel in endeavoring to secure legislation intended to in juriously and perhaps fatally affect the interesisof transportation companies He alsocooperated with Senator Goebel in endeavoring to secure the enactment of other in imical measures These gentlemen being candi dates lor offices which should they be successful will give them the power to make their enmities effective to the great possible injury of important business interests some of the officers and employes of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company have sought to aid their opponents and endeavored so far as they could in a proper way to induce others to do like wiseThe Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company has done some thing for the development of the material interests of the State of Kentucky and would like to do more It is trying as best it can to furnish facilities which its management would like to provide although there is at present little prospect that it can be done with out for many years incurring a direct loss It has no desire to par ticipate in politics and if treated fairly by all parties it would not care who is Governor of the State of Kentucky or who is Mayor of the city of Louisville The foregoing being a rather brief statement of the facts of the present situation the question arises do they justify the Courier Journal in not only renouncing its former friendly feeling for this company but in declaring war against correspondents representing 104 countiesWHEAT Winter wheat harvest is over and threshing has begun in many of the States in the winter wheat belt So far reports from thresli ers bear out predictions of a decreased yield and it is safe to say total yield of winter wheat will fall short of ante harvest estimates In Ohio threshing develops- with few exceptions a light yield with quality good In Indiana the yield is falling far short of previous estimates andthe quality is generally poor Threshing has not begun in Michigan but former estimates of a poor crop will be borne out with quality generally poor Missouri crop is much be low an average in quantity and quality not fully reported Kan sas crop is a poor one with many acres not harvested Spring wheat is from two to three weeks late with prospects favorable for a full yield on an average acreage Threshing in this State was well under way at close of the month The yield is light as previously indicated and generally speaking results are short of expectations A few early crops that escaped damage from fly and rust are yield ing well The quality is superior as a rule The average yield per acre is 82 bushels For the past three years the estimated average yield per acre was for 1898 13 bushels 1897 12 bushels 1896 61 bushels By sections the average yield is for western 72 bushels central 102 southeastern 7 bushels CORN The corn crop is very uneven in appearance Early corp is laid by in good condition andsome of it is silking and tasseling Medium early corn is not so promising is some what ragged as to stand and is suf fering injury from insects Chinch bugs gre present in a number of counties but the damage is confined to cornfields adjacent to helds of wheat There is a considerable acreage of very late corn as are suIt of failure to secure a stand and the planting of abandoned tobacco fields to corn Cultivation was retarded early in the season but later was pushed vigorously Corn is now clean but the excessive culti vation necessary to clear it of weeds has left it IA poor condition to withstand the dry weather now prevalent except in sections that have been relieved by local showers Theconditlonaverages83 a loss of one point since June ist The average condition on this date for the past two years were 189896 1897 87 The condition by sec q tions shows as follows Western 82 central 83 and southeastern 84 TOBACCO The acreage of tobacco is esti mated at 83 per cent of the acre age of 1898 A full acreage was planted but the damage by grass hoppers has materially affected the acreage The destruction wrought by these insects this sear is something unknown in the history of tobacco growing inthe State Early tobacco escaped damage btt late has suffered sea verely many crops being set the third time A majority gave up after the second trial and planted to corn or peas By section the atreage shows for western 82 per cent of 1898 acreage and for central 86 per cent The southeastern section grows compara tively little tobacco The condition compared with average years is 79 The condi tion as of this date for past three years was for 1898 92 1897 68 1896 92- Late set tabacco is suffering greatly for lack of moisture Worms are reported plentiful in a number of counties The condition of oats has im proved from 82 on June ist to 85 July 1st and now promise a good yield per acre The straw is short but heads fine length and well filledHemp has suffered somewhat from dry weather yet the condition averages 93 as compared with average years which is 8 points higher than the average for the past three years The numb r of acreo of clover cut compared with 1898 is 87 The quality is affected by the presence of an unusual amount of white blossom With exception of some damage by ram to early cut clover it was saved in good condition Timothy meadows are in poor condition being filled with white blossom and other weeds Pastures are beginning to suffer from dry weather and the condi lion is now 98 as compared with averagE years Fruit prospects have declined as the season advanced Pears have still a fair per cent of fruit remaining Apples have dropped badly and the outlook at present isfor half crop Early apples are ripe but inferior in quality The crop of wild blackberries is small in yield and very inferior in quality LUCAS f OORE Commissioner of
