It will greatly benefit all who attend. The railroads have made a one fare rate for the round trip from This will be about all points. Expenses from Earlington. $15 in Detroit will be so low that one need spend only $25 or $30 to attend. Kentucky Endeavor Union desires to be largely represented, and cordially invites all the friends of the young people to go with them on their special train which leaves Louisville at 8 a. m. on the morning of July 4th. Well, tbe truth is there is already a surplus of miners in tbis Hopkins county and no oee has called for snch labor from adjoining counties, and besides tbat miners here are doing good work and getting good pay and they will stay here. Among other things Supt Ingle, of tbe Evansville mine, wno was forced to call upon tbe law for protection to life and property, says tbe step was taken to protect the citizens of Evansville wbo bad been faithful employes under him for years and wbo refused to listen to tbe lies and dictates of Ibe labor agitator wbo ordered tbe present strike and placed so many of his brother miners on tbe poverty lists. We have always taken the view that labor anions could do much more good work for mankind by teaching men to refrain from Ibe use of intoxicants Iban ibey could by trying by force lo settle tbe wage question, but Ibey will not listen lo good advice, and instead find intoxicants lo be a valuable aid to the agitator wbo roams over Ibe land seeking for miners wbom be can lead into his web, by inducing tbem to join ibe U. M. W. An illustration of tbe great power of drink can be seen now in Hopkins county, where tbe agitator bas come, and he says lo organize tbe miners. Seeing be can have no influence over the sober man be adopts tbe plan to have beer drinking parlies where the laborer is invited lo attend and where after tbe reason of tbe miner is dethroned by drink they, by misrepresentation, try to lead tbe poor fellow into an order tbat in the end means ruin. At tbe great meeting of Ibe agitators which was lately held, as Ibey write at some bouse, but which instead is held in some secluded spot in tbe woods, tbere were present we are told, six agitators and six men wbo were bunting a similar job One ot these fellows it is said bas for years been dodging an honest debt of forty or more dollars due for tbe necessaries of life, and others went tbere merely for Ibe beer in sight. Should tbe new coal rates adopted by tbe L. & N. and other roads prevail many companies will be shut out entirely from markets where they have heretofore sold large quantities of coal. For instance, tbe Renecke, St .Bernard and Providence coal companies can not ship lo Henderson and compete witb Sebree mine. Tbis will prove not only disastrous to coal companies but tbe railroads will also be heavy losers. Tbe insinuation cast by Fred Dilcher, tbe chief organizer atlivansville, that the shooting of miners was most likely done by men who came from Madisonville andEarlington on the same train with the miners, shows plainly to what depths of degradrtion men wilt sometimes go to bolster up a lost cause. By falsehoods bo bopes to detract attention from Ibe guilty ones, which evidently are members of Ibe rrganization of which he is a recognized le.der and aa a true saying is that murder will out, Ibe assas-in- s will some day be caught and tben we suppose if bo is honest be will be convinced of bis error. Tbe mines at Evansville we ire told bave already at work abont all tbe miners tbey now need, in spite of Ibe advice of tbe agitator to tbe contrary, and it is tbe opinion of many that Ibe agitator and striker will hereafter be shut out entirely from these mines. Mr. Amos Bassett, one of the of Madisonville, It Was Held at Russellville, pioneer citizens Kentucky, a Century Ago. "The effect of,the McGee, broth ers' preaching especially of John McGee at a Presbyterian quarterly meeting on the banks of Red River, in Kentucky, was so start ling and seemed so' clearly to indicate that it was the result of Divine agency or some mysterious force possessed by the preacher, that the news of the occurrence spread .rapidly in all directions throughout that part of the State, and attracted unbounded interest," writes Clifford Howard in the July Ladies' Home Journal. "If it did not at once awaken a responsive religious feeling, it at least excited curiosity, and when it was learned that the McGee brothers were to hold a meeting at Russellville, Kentucky, a newly settled town in Logan County, near the Muddy River, persons from all parts of the adjoining country, irrespective of their religious beliefs or church allegiance, prepared to attend. It soon became evident that the four wails of a country meeting-house would not suffice to hold the large numbers that were making ready to go to Russellville. The prob lem thus presented was solved determining to hold the meeting in the open air. Those coming from, a distance were prepared to camp; it would be no hardship to doors The them to remain out-orecent experience at Red River had proved .this. It Vras.not expected by those whoiwere coming that the lodging accommodations atthe village of Russellville would be sufiicent by any means. Why, therefore, attempt to house the people? Prepare a camping-grounand let the meeting be a 'camp' meeting. This, then, was and the origin of the first one held in America was on the banks of the Muddy River, near Russellville, Kentucky, in the month of August, 1799 one hundred years ago. Not that religious worship had never before been held in the open air, but the special feature of camping out and the nature of the services made the a distinctive institution, and characterized this particular gathering on Muddy River as the first of its kind." -- LOCAUEWS. We, Republicans of Hopkins county, Kentucky, in mass convention assembled, renew our allegiance to tbe Republican party, whoso principles and policies make tbe brightsit pages in our history as a nation, and are being vindicated by current events. We heartily endorse and approve the wise, statesmanlike and patriotic National and Stale administrations. We express our great confidence in and high regard for our beloved President, whom every true American delights to honor and praise; and in our worthy Governor, whose brilliant administration deserves tbe good will and applause ot good citizens everywhere. We view with alarm tbe attempt that is now being made by certain Democratic politicians to throttle tbe will of the people. We denounce the Goebel election Wr law as dangerous and favor such legislation as will be best for tbe general good. We recognize in Judge Clifton J. Pratt Ibe ideal candidate of our party for Governor, and we instruct our delegates to cast Ibe entire vote of this county as a unit for him, and to use all tbelr votes and influence on all questions and in every honorable way to secure bis Witb fudge Pratt at tbe bead nomination. ot our ticket success at tbe coming election He is an honorable, would be assured. upright, Christian gentleman: an able and jurist; an eloquent and distinguished forcible speaker; and a loyal and earnHe belongs to no facest Republican. tion, has kept aloof from all contentions, has ever been on the highest plane of politics, and bis nomination would unite all forces and bring harmony to the ranks, Udder bis manly, courageous, inspiring leadership our Grand Old Parly, united and enthusiastic, would march on to certain victory. I had always supposed that Amcr ica had national holidays,' and that the Fourth of July was one of them, if not the king bee in the holiday line. It has always been called our natal day, the birthday of independence with a big B, and al that sort of thing, and I took it for granted, as I am sure hundreds of thousands of others do, that it was consecrated to liberty and in dependence by some expression in the statutes on the subject, ex cepting here and there it is spoken But it is of as a legal holiday. no more of a national holiday than is the 22d ot February, and by no means as clearly defined as day. This fact was bad enough, and it .may be thought that it was overlooked, but there is not a line in the statutes of any of the states of the United States giving the Fourth of July, the glorious Fourth mind you, any mention or preference in the matter of honor. The glorious Fourth is a legal holiday all right enough, and is pretty generally recognized, and it promises to be more generally recognized than ever, particularly in the South, but it is not a national holiday and has never been so declared by statute. The fact is we have no national holiday, though there arc several legal holidays during the year, Christmas, Washington's New Year day, birthday, Labor Day and Thanksgiving day, but Congress only makes them legal holidays for this district. For instance, what we call Labor Day in this district, and which it is. a legal holiday, is not recognized on either side of the The states Potomac from us. have their Labor day, but there is no unanimity about the day selected, as they have arbor days, Taylor has 830J4 instructed votes founders' day and a lot of other in the Republican race for Gover- days. I don't mean to be understood as saying that the Fourth of July is not recognized as a holiday throughout the United States, but I do mean to say that except by common consent there is nothing about it that makes it a national holiday. Of course it is a legal holiday in the district, as it is in several states, but it is not a legal holiday in all ol the states. For that matter, neither is Christmas or Thanks giving day in many slates Washington's birthday is a legal holiday in this district, but just over in Virginia it is not, though if there is one state where it should be a state holiday, in Virginia."
