There is no end to the free silver and free fight possibilities in this contest, but there are other elements in the scrap, as is evidenced by the following extract from a dispatch from Grant county: Although Grant is thoroughly plastered with free silver literature and opinions, the number of gold eagles and double eagles that have been sailing over tho country since tbe Gubernatorial race began is legion. But it will be remembered that there are 119 counties in Kentucky and that a few of this number could be spared to Gen. Taylor and yet he be beaten. It is not always the fellow who makes the most noise who wins out the end. Judge Pratt is still Republicans are harmonious and confident for the best possible reasons. The platform adopted in national convention at St. Louis three years agd has been wrought into law and turned into action to a remarkable extent. The pledges arc accomplished facts. Prosperity was promised, and It has come in ampler measure than was anticipated. The causes of depression accurately pointed out, have been removed, There is a new protective tariff law whose success is fully up to expectation. "The Republican party is unreservedly for sound money," said the platform. The dollar on a parity with gold was never as firmly established in the United States as it is today. "The Hawaiian Islands should be controlled by the United States," ran another plank. They have become an integral part of the country. In regard to Cuba the Re publicans of the nation assembled at St. Louis declared that "the United States should actively use offices to re its infltfeaee store peace and give independence to the island." In our columns also appears today a letter .from a Webster county man who sees much encouragement ahead for the Republicans of Webster in the candidacy of Judge Pratt for Governor and that writer calls on Judge Towery and insists that he is the proper candidate for the Legislature in that county and that the people are for Judge Pratt and Judge Towery. That certainly sounds like a winning combination. from Beaver Dam says much interest is manifest in the race for State Senator. Both candidates claim the nomination but it looks as if Long has a little the lead of Howard. A dispatch Bit: Car Lo4fl. From Brads'rtit't . In their efforts to increase the trainload, and thus cut down the percentage of operating cost in connection with freight traffic, railroad managers have unexpectedly encountered a new difficulty, involving the possibility of a clash between the interests of tbe roads and those of many shippers. One of the elements of the modern method of conducting traffic is the steady increase in the capacity of freight cars. A generation ago pounds was a maximum 23,000 carload. Now the standard rail road freight car has a capacity of 50,000 to 60,000 pounds; and cars of greater tonnage are by no means rare. This, however, involved the necessity of providing maximum loads, since every pound below a car's capacity increases the dead weight, which has to be hauled without profit and with an increase in the ratio of expense. Shippers in some branches of trade are, however, inclined to rebel against regulations increasing the minimum weight of freight accepted by the railroads in making rates upon carload lots. The claim is advanced that the average shipper or consignee is unlikely to ship or receive goods in carload lots of over 24,000 pounds, and that the attempt of the railroads in some instances to increase this minimum to 30,000 pounds is an injustice and a detriment to the interests of various lines of business. As one who has been keeping his eyes and ears open for some time I want to say a few things politically to the voters of Hopkins and Webster counties though your columns. Republicans are proud of the opportunity to get to' vote for Judge Clifton J. Pratt for the high and important office of governor. We have known him long and well and have always found him as true as steel. While he is as courteous and gentle and kind as a Christian woman he is as courageous as a lion when necessary and the occasion demands. As firm as the rock of Gibraltar when he investigates a question and decides the right or wrong there is in it, but never until he does fully analyze a proposition and go to the bottom of it does he postively commit himself a very important characteristic for the Chief Executive of this grand old Always State. systematic and painstaking it can be said of him as is said of Admiral Dewey, he never loses his head. Give us such a man as the Republican nominee for governor, with the man I shall mention for the Legislature, and you will sec Webster and Hopkins both come up with Republican majorities amounting up in the hundreds. Judge Pratt will add great strength to your candidates for the Legislature, as scores of Democrats are anxious to sec him nominated to vote for him in any event. Others, provided they do not get their choice as' nominee in their own party, and others who say they will not vote against him. By a careful selection of our can didates for the Legislature we can add to his majority. I do not know or pretend to offer a suggestion to Hopkins county as to their candidate but I have been making most diligent inquiries and persistent efforts in Webster to learn who was most available and I have no hesitation nor shadow of doubt but what Geo. H. Towery, if he will con sent to make the race, can whoop up more of the boys from the hills and lowlands, from the cross roads and the two great railroads that span our county than any other man in the party. He knows and is known by every voter in the connty and can come nearer meeting every man alike, whether his clothes are good or bad. Whether he has one gallus or two or none, it makes no difference to Towery. He can tell you a joke and take more things good than any man in the county. He has spent more time and money for the party than any three men in the county. It is true he has not always been a Republican, but for nearly twenty years he has worked as no man among us has worked to build up the party, and has seen it grow from about three hundred scattering voters to its grand proportions of from sixteen hundred to two thousand. With Pratt for Governor and Towery for the legislature, you will see Webster come up with a majority of two to three hundred for the grand old party of the people, protection, progress and prosperity. The American traveler is not only likely to grumble when he is compelled to hurry to the station and finds that he must pay about five cents a mile in gold, and lrom seven to eight cents a mile in g Spanish silver, to ride in the cars known .is carriages, and that for an ordinary trunk he must pay about half fare, he is inclined to scoff at the primitive mode of travel, and to long for the luxury of even journeying on a Western mountain road. The amazing amount of computation by the ticket agent before he sells a ticket, the smoky lamps, the three preliminary foot ings of the engine beiore the train starts, the final ringing of a bell by the baggage-maste- r as a signal that the train really is going, the crowded condition of the aisles, choked with luggage for which the passengers do not care to pay toll, and every man in the train, from from the conductor down to the barefooted brakemen, smoking tobacco of varying degrees of excellence all this is likely to weary the American traveler used to the luxury of Pullman cars. A few hard jolts soon after the train leaves the station bring up to the imagination the prospect of a miserable trip, and one is inclined at the very outset to rail at the crudities of travel by cars in the island of Cuba. del-Riback-breakin- Fire Started From Spontaneous Combustion. er PEOPLE iMmf!? Originated at the Very Top of the Plant In Elevator. .ssssVI bsssssk coal-washin- first-clas- s stage-coac- h The theory of incendiarism with reference to the plant of the St. Bernard Coal Company, which was burned Wednesday night of last week is entirely dissipated in the light of events and the proof that has been developed by the testimony of witnesses and all circumstances connected with the fire. There was such a suspicion entertained at first, before a thorough investigation could be made, but the proofs at hand leave no ground upon which to rest such suspicion. It is now clearly determined that the fire originated in the very top of a coal elevator some seventy-fiv- e feet from the ground, the most inaccessible point about the works. One witness saw smoke issuing from that point but did not at the time think anything wrong. There seems no other rational theory than that there was in somo way an accumulation of fine coal in the very top of this elevator, which HOGS MUST CO. was fired spontaneously. According to Christ's own explanation, the field is tho world, the sower of the good seed is tho Son of Man, tho sower of tho tares is satan, the wheat represents tho children of tho kingdom of heaven, tho tares tho children of tho deviL The harvest is tho end of the world, when God will separato tho good and tho ovii. What does this parable teach T It seems to declare against all discipline in tho church, bnt this cannot bo its real significance Discipline is clearly tanght in other portions of tho word of God, and Scriptnro does not contradict Scripture. It must certainly therefore only intend to declaro that there should bo a spirit of patient forbearance and tolerance in tho church and in Christ's kingdom, because of the impossibility of having a perfectly pure church in this world and becauso an intolerant spirit is calculated to do inoro harm than good. With this as tho key to the solution of the parablo several important facts aro tot forth. 1. Good and bad will always bo found in tho church and world. Wheat and tares will ever bo entirely separated in this lifo. The perfect stato is a Utopian dream. Tho ideal chnrch is in hoaven, not upon earth. Tho old dispensation had its falso prophets as well as its good. Tho apostles bad their Judas and the early Christian church its Ananias and Sapphira.
