Coal Washing Plant at St Bernard Coke Works IS PRACTICALLY A TOTAL LOSS Burned Last NightA Strong Suspicion of Incendiarism NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS INSURANCE nightIthe alarm of fire and a few minutes later the switch engine took up the cry and whistled the call for help to all the working people of Ear liugton It was the coalwashing- and coke crushing plant of thb St Bernard Coal Co An army ot men were on the grounds as fast as their legs could carry them The fire laddies started with the hose and even dragged along the chem ical engine which by the way did do a little good at one time Thercwas plenty of water but no pressure and the big pulsonetter in the plant was crippled so that it was of no avail Steam was started in the bOlted arid efforts made to work the pumps but in vain so that there was very little that could be done Still all hands kept hammering away doing what little there was posstble +toVtlo The trestlework and buildings burned i rapidly and fell in from time to time borne down by the weight ol the various machinery throughout the plant Finally the fire burned itself into a harmless condition against a part of the coal bins that were filled with wet slack the ends of the bins giving way and poured the wet slack upon the burning timbers belowIThere is strong suspicion of jn cendiarism entertained by the guards Esquire Priest and Val lace Crenshaw who report having run off two suspicious looking characters not long before the fire and say that when they got back to the coke plant the buildings were ablazeIf had been connection with the city water works much could have been saved although the alarm cme late There was 9000 insurance on the plant as follows Royal2 500 Manchester 1500 North British and Mercantile 2500 Lancashire 2500 all placed in the Earlington agencies of these companies This will be the first time the St Bernard Coal Company has ever called on insurance companies to settle a loss The company has had a very enviable record in the matter of fires The loss will stop all operations at the coke ovens lor some time and until a new washing plant can be erected and new washers built and the plant equipped with the necessary machinery Some fifty men are idle this morning on account the shutting down of the plant The new work will be started at once Suspicious Cases Two suspicious cases of eruptive fever bearing strong resemblance to smallpox were discovered and isolated by the health officers last night and seven men who tfad been exposed were vaccinated and also isolated in another place All are colored The first case was candidates for the Republican nomination for the Governorship is now complete and that the struggle fotI this honor will be confined to Mtssrs Pratt Taylor and Stone who announced their candidacies- in the order given These gentlemen are all available for leadership in the approaching campaign and the Republican State Convention can not make a mistake in choosing between them With a leader from this list and Gocbelism toI fight the Republicans should win the battle for control of the State this year by a substantial majority It ought not to be possible even by manipulation of the election machinery under tle Goebel law to count them out There no occasion therefore for acrimony in the campaign for the favor of delegates to the Re publican State Convention To be plainer about the matter it will be a colossal blunder to hold any more such county conventions as was held in Marion county on Saturday last A few more scuh exhibitions of intolerance by presiding officers and of outside interference in coun ty politics as happened at Lebanon will render Republican defeat at the polls next November certain enough to satisfy the most vindict ive Democrat in Kentucky The Commercial does not pre tend to say which side may have been at fault in the convention referred to It docs not pretend to say which set of the delegates chosen is entitled to seats in the State Convention but it does not hesitate to declare that the Republicans of Marion county are at fault in permitting the antecon vention canvass to get into a shape of which Saturdays disagreement was probably the logical outcome t- It seems clear that to a certain extent they permitted external influences to disrupt them and for this they can not escape responsibility It was their duty as it is the duty of Republicans in every county in the State to notify the reckless partisans of all the candidates for the gubernatorial nomination who come prancing into their territory from the outside that no foreign assistance is needed in the conduct of their conventions It was also their duty to repress within their own ranks all such extravagance of protest as was likely to result in such a split as finally occurredand as now puts upon the State Convention a delicate responsibility with which it should not have been burdened Republicans generally will hope the Marion County Republican Convention is to be the last of its kind Snap Conventions From Lexington Leader One of the counties in eastern Kentucky has already held its Re publican convention more than seven weeks before the State Con vention to which it sends delegates In nine days after the announce ment of a distinguished candidate for Governor the party organiza ion in this county called a convention and instructed its delegates for this gentleman before candidates for various offices had been given reasonable time to announce and without anything liken opportunity for a canvass by Repnblicans who might wish an opportunity to present theirI claims This is the kind of trigger work that brings party organization into disrepute breeds dissensions and provokes disastrous factional conflicts East India is to have 550 miles of 30inch gauge labor organizations sometimes convert tbeir members into beggars by ordering strikes is a poor recommenda lion to those who look to be guided in tbe path which leads to peace and plenty Among the South Diamond miners making friends here a brief call last Sunday were Superintendent Harris and foreman Pat Blair Tbe Sebrce mine is said lo be profited by tbe Southern Indiana strike as they are shipping considerable coal to Evans villo and other Indiana points The report is in circulation that sometime ago the colored miners in a neighbor ing county were taken into full fellowship with tbe whites when the U M Workers organized a lodge there But they soon found the sole purpose of this feigned kindness was simply lo render them useless lo themselves and employees and that Ibeir membership was no longer de sired when that object was accomplished and they were given a hint lo leave While this should be a warning to them we find that an occassional colored miner through the N K Fairbank Company Officially Declares That They Will Not do In Chicago May 26In an inter view today Mr James B McMahon Second Vice President of The N K Fairbank Company speaking officially in behalf of the Company expressed himself as followsWe are not identified in any manner with the movement to combine the leading Soap Manufacturers although such a movement is well under way and may eventually materialize Notwith standing the conditions in the soap trade are very badly demor alized the Fairbank Company are not seeking or encouraging any combination of manufacturers as a means of improvement Soap prices are relatively the lowest in the history of the trade The tal low market has advanced fully i cent per pound m the past few months without any corresponding improvement in the selling prices of soaps hence the present movement towards combining interests Any combination embracing the principal manufacturers through out the country might naturally and legitimately be in a position to advance soap prices proportion ately to the enhancement ofall raw materials but beyond this ef feet on our trade we are positively not interested or concerned in any consolidation of soap interests We are encouraging our salesmen in all directions to work with per fect confidence in the permanent independence of this Company of all Trust affiliations and we arc pleased to state that the soap trade continues very brisk be cause aside from the natural effect of the expected combination the current cost of all raw materials warrants materially higher prices on soaps and sensible buyers are anticipating future requirements to the full limit of their convenience in carrying stocks- Wonderful Discovery LUNSPORD ALA April 15 1898 New Spencer Medicine Co Dear SirsI have been CHARGED Goebel Men to Be Sent as Delegates Under Instructions From HARDIN AND STONE COUNTIES Then Bolt InstructionsWork Ing In First Second and Other Districts Walter Forrester who is a free lance in Kentucky politics and possesses somewhat of a discern ing nose for political news and trickery charges in his last issue of the Free Press that the Goebel managers have evolved a most startling scheme to steal the dele gations to the State Convention from Hardin and Stone counties The scheme is quite Goebellike in its arrangement and very much akin to the provisions and pur poses of the law which is to con trol our elections if its author be comes Governor This scheme if it be as outlined will throw some light upon the mysterious move ments of Goebel leaders and some people who have been posing as Hardins friends in Hopkins and other counties which have been counted Hardin strongholds Here it isThe most remarkable scheme of political rascality that has ever been attempted In Kentucky hatched by the GoebelHalde man goldbug combination that is trying to regain control of the Democratic organiza Hon in this State It is nothing less than a deliberately arranged program for a lot of Goebels men in Hardin and Stone coun ties to get themselves selected as delegates to the State Convention under Instructions for one or the other of those candidates and then to ignore instructions and bolt to Goebel in the convention This is being arranged for in the First Second Third Fourth Seventh Eighth and Tenth districts The Hardin mana gers up to this time are entirely ignorant of the extent to which this scheme has grown If carried into effect it may cause a big row in Ihe convention but Goebel has said that be has no concern for any thing but the nomination and be is thor oughly satisfied of hIs ability to carry the election with the aid of the Goebel bill and Its machinery What a Kentucky Lady Did Fulton K May 33 iSpgMiss Leila Bard of this place has been for many years a ever since Mr Crowe was here and THE I BEE republishes it for their pleas ure and because it contains so i many good things well said about our town and townspeople My itinerant tours among the churches furnish a varied arena for thoughtful observation and pleasant reflections For three weeks I have been among the noble miners of this modern city modern in all the elements and institutions that beautify social life and glorify commercial industrial enterprise Not an idle man has been seen walking these streets by day or by night The law of thrift insures a I state of rest and reward and con tentment smiles on happy homes Nearly three thousand souls dwell hereas cultured refined sober industrious folk as can be found anywhere The St Bernard Coal Company reigns supreme in all the activities of the people and the company merits the confidence and devotion they have won by gener ous considerations liberal pro visions and equitable compensations for those who toil to bring r the black diamond to the surface of the earth and service of man Electric lights sparkle like bril liants on the brows and bosoms of the hills and solid pavements on every street lead the wearied feet of lurid remembrance of Dantes Inferno or Brownings Prometheus Bound Here man and beast toil in darkness to liber ate the fuel for freemen who never think and care less concerning the human sacrifice required to bring these benefits to Jheir homes To see hundreds of wearied workers trudging homeward is a sight to stir the sympathy and command the plaudit of anyone who recog nizes the divinity of Beginning Blur 2S Comment by nOT S II Doyle TOPIC Established In hontP exit 110 Rom i 11 12 To bo established in heart according to the psalmist is to trust in God rath er than In self Tho blessedness of heart establishment is apparent The psalm 1st declares that tho righteous shall not bo afraid of evil tidings because his heart is fixed trusting in tho Lord Ills heart is established Ho shall not bo afraid Fearlessness la n characteristic of ono who has lila heart established Ho fears neither evil tidings nor his enemies knowing that tho destiny of his Ufo is in the hand of God God keeps those in perfect peace whose mind is staid on Him The need of the establishment of tho heart in God lies in tho fact of tho treacheronsnoss the human heart and of its tremendous influence on tho Ute Tho heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked It is naturally at enmity with God and therefore boo fore it can be trusted it must be changed by tim power of God by faith and trust in God Furthermore as n man Is in bis heart in his inward life eo Is ho Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth upeaketb Tho heart not only directs tho speech but also tho life A pure heart makes a pure life an im pure heart makes an life How necessary and important therefore that the heart should l right that it should bo divinely established be filled with lovo to God and directed anti con trolled by tho will of God An established heart is not conformed to this world It is not fashioned after worldly patterns but is transformed Tho heart is changed and it iaorraign od against sinful worldliness rather than being conformed to it This transforma tion in tho human heart is accomplished only by tho power of tho Holy Ghost Bo not conformed to this world says the apostle but be ye transformed by tim renewing of your mind This renewal of the mind which Is equivalent to the changing of the heart is the work of the Holy Ghost It is the regeneration of the soul of which Christ speaks to Nicodemus Amid tho trials tribulations evil bodings oppositions of life let us keep our minds and hearts established in God Then wo need fear no evil though the earth bo removed and tim mountains bo carried
