Iloplcincville, Ky., May 16 Mrs. Belle Coleman, a patient from Howling Green, who was received at tliu Western Asylum about ten days ago, committed suicide in a moat 'peculiar manner. Great care was taken to remove from her room everything with which she could injure herself. She was allowed to 'go to the bathroom, and seized the opportunity to destroy her life. Finding 6hc could not drown herself, she turned the hot water faucet and held her mouth under the scalding stream, letting the water riin into her stomach. She was so badly burned that she died a few hours later. just before she was brought to the asylum she attempted suicide by shooting and had not fully recovered from the wound on her breast. She was a widow forty years old and leaves one child, a 1 DL H daughter. Press Comment on Judge Pratt. The Bek, a bright, newsy Republican paper published at Ky., has reached our .exEarl-ingto- n, change table bearing the announcement of Judge Clilton j. Pratt, of Hopkins county, as a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor. Burksvillc Herald. Let the party nominate judge Clifton J. Pratt for Governor by "acclamation. Greenville Tribune. a Western Kentucky has a candidate for the nomination of the Republican party for Governor. Judge Chiton ). Pratt, of Madisonville, has announced himself, and is the first to seek the endorsement of his party. Judge Pratt is very well known here, where he has been in some vey important legal cases, f Ic is one of the leading men of his party in the State, and will be hard to beat for the nomi- -' nation. Greenville Record. The Louisville Post of Saturday reports the following interview with Judge Pratt: "I have been busy closing op some lw business and opening negotiations with various county Republican committees. So far the responses have been most gratifying. I have bad tellers from all qoar-ler- s of Ibe Stale I bave not been advised as lo who will be mr opponents. I know that I am a candidal as a Republican only, I am not allied 10 any faction, r.or bave I taken sides with any faction. "I suppose Ibat I will bave opponent, and I suppose that tbey will support Ibe administration of President McKinley, as I intend lo do. I bave corns lo Louisville seeking the support ot the Republicans of Ibe county. Tbal is all I bave 10 say for Ibe present " Commercial-Tribun- e Cincinnati recently contained a very complimentary notice of Judge Pratt's candidacy. This paper occupies at Cincinnati about the same' attitude to the Republican party as does the o( St. Louis, and both aro in close touch with the Washington istration. Globe-Democr- at The ad-tn- ir It is generally understood here that the entries will close with the decision of Col. Stone in the matter, and that if he stays out it will be fought out between Judge Pratt and Gen. Taylor. The friends of Taylor confidently expected the announcement of Sfone at once when they pushed their man into the race and arc now predicting that he will never declare himself a candidate. Taylor has yet outlined no campaign and will likely not do so until it is known whether or not he will have Stone for an opponent. Frankfort Dispatch. ' Interesting Confederate Relic. 'f r federate reunion at Charleston, S. cannon, C, was the iron "Old Secession," which was used in announcing the opening of the secession in that city and was again fired when the ordinance of secession was passed. It was also used to announce the secession of each State as the news was received at Charleston, and whenever its roar was heard many persons rushed to sec what State had joined South Carolina. The cannon has been removed at night to various 'places and buried since the evacuation of Charleston in 18G4. ""SaSTTiT" The Republican Convention for the Seventh Senatorial District will be held at Beaver Dam, June 10th, for the purpose of nominating a candidate for State Senator from the counties of Ohio, Muhlenberg and Butler. Precinct and county conventions will be held to select delegates to the district Convention. The Republican precinct conventions of Muhlenberg county were held last Saturday. It is announced that the Populists will hold a State Convention at Frankfort July 27 for the purpose of nominating a State ticket. Richard P. Stoll, of Lexington, who has been spoken of as a probable candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, says he will not enter the race. The first county Republican convention held in the State was held in Breckinridge county last Satuaday. The State and National administrations were endorsed and a delegation was appointed in the governor's race but instructed for Hon. R. N. Miller, of that county, for Attorney General. Frankfort, Ky., May 15 The latest entry in the Republican political field is Col. Young, of Bath county, who wants to succeed Secretary of State Finley in that office. Young, while here today on a political mission, announced his intention of running for this office, and says that he will make a vigorous campaign for it between now and the time of the Lexington convention. The friends and advisers of Young think that he will make a strong candidate. He has not been strongly allied in the past with any of the factions in the party and is friendly with both the Bradley and the Hunter wings. He has been prominent for years past in the councils of the party in this section of the State, and served during the campaign of 189G and 1897 in con4 junction with Sam . Democrat comes a little nearer the mark. But there is only one "real thing," the unadulterated Goebel Democrat; the man who believes the Goebel election machine is all powerful to win and who wants to be in the band wagon ; the wire puller and ringster who aspires to be in the league to dominate his party and. to be in at the division of the spoils; to get the offices and to hold them at any cost to the citizenship and the material interest of the State. It was written from Manila under date of March 24 and is addressed to a friend who kindly permits The Bee to reproduce those parts of it which are of interest to Orlcan's many friends hereabouts. Here it is: Headquarters Fikst Division Eighth Armv Corps. Manila, March 241b, 1899, Of course as you well know, I left Huntsville with General Lawton, enroute to the Philippines about January 3d, remained in Washington until the ijth, went toNew York and sailed on the good ship "Grant" to the "Pearls of the Orient." We had rather a rough voyage across the Atlantic, and not a tew ot us wore the "scikest of the sick." but by the time wo arrived in sight of the Rock ot Gibraltar, all were well and were anticipating with great pleasure our stop at that point. After being quarantined for a couple of days, we were allowed to go ashore and such a time we did have, is beyond my power to place on paper. Everybody enjoyed themselves very much. From this point we sailed through the Mediterranean to Port Said, Egypt, thence through the Suez Canal to Suet City. The canal goes through "Bitter Lake" and at Ismaila, in same, is the place where the the children of Israel went across on dry land. (Dibls scholar, see?) Going through the Red Sea we saw Mount Sinai. We stopped next at Perim Island, Colnmbo, and Singapore. In all of these places we went ashore and had a most enjoyable time, visiting many interesting places. The cities were all very fine, having many fine buildings, parks, etc., especially, Colum-bwhere the buildings are as fine as you see anywhere. At 10 o'clock, 3. m., March iotb, we sailed mlo Ibe harbor of Manila, fired a salate to Admiral Dewey, same being duly answered by him. We had 1,95s passengers aboard, including officers; officers' families, soldiers and civilians, and all were landed in the best of health and spirits. We bad an exceptional voyage, going 13,300 miles without the loss of a single life or an hour's delay except in coaliog and rpsupplying the ship. We got ashore right soon and for five or six days did nothing but run aronnd and look at things, then .were assigned to the tst Division, Eighth Army Corps, tempo-rarity. ns 3&ed6 SaMa Mnnrt'i JL 1 9Pj the best interests Kentucky at heart, met together USBsBEuSBM rill, tan liter Hie, the pnn Irrlutlna an! tmTJeat hurtle touku with Hood KtriiptrlllX to promote those interests to the full extent of their united ability. Stone will still further swell the list of candidates by authorizing the use of his name in connection with the gubernatorial nomination, and if he does so it will be conceded that three of the strongest men in the Republican party in this State will have en tered the contest for leadership this year. To the Commercial all this appears to be a matter for general The Republican congratulation. fact that three strong and ambitious Republicans desire to make the canvass for governor of Kentucky this year, and that others may yet announce their candidacies for the same honor, is one of the convincing indications of Republican success at the polls. Under these conditions we look for the holding of a State convention made up of earnest delegates from every county in the State, and all aroused to a high pitch of enthusiasm for the nomination of a strong Republican ticket and for the work ot the campaign that is to follow. No harm to the best interests of the Republican party can possibly result from vigorous rivalry for party favor. With a number of candidates in the field for almost every place on the Republican State ticket it is certain that the State convention will be a thoroughly representative body, and in the hands of such a convention the welfare of the party is safe. The Republican masses will accept the judgment of such a convention without question and they will rally to the support of the candidates it names with the vigor and enthusiasm that swept a Republican administration into power four years ago. There is too much at stake in ; Manila is a very pretty place, parts of it being divided into the old and new, the old being surrounded by high walls and moats, buildings yery low, streets narrow; while the new is more modsrn, has wide streets, many fine buildings, parks, street cars, electric lights and looks more and more every day like an American pUce, aa the old Spanish signs come down and American ones are placed in their stead. The Escolta is the principal business street and the Luneta is the fashionable drive and walk along the Day front. Here every evening you see the society people driving and walking in droves, the bands playing, people surf bathing, and, in fact, it is a very pleasant and nice place lo visit. There are some five or six hundred thousand inhabitants, consisting of natives, 60 per cent.; Chinamen, 30 per cent, and the other to per cent., all nations ot the earth. The natives seem to be very poor, live chiefly in Nipa huts, simply bambo poles, covered with a kind ot grass. The Chinamen are all engaged in business, and you can get anything from a needle to a harvest machine, at reasonable prices; yon might say cheap. The money used is chiefly Mexican and is only worth .474 per dollar, so when you get a ten or twenty dollar bill changed, you have to get a wagon lo carry your money in. lne women all nave a very peculiar dress, (doubtless a very fine thing for this climate) but I will have to get you to wait tor the description until I can make myself more familar with the articles. The climate, so far, has been very nice indeed, a little warm, bnt nothing to compare with what I expected. There is but little sickness and the sanitary conditions, generally, are very encouraging. The other clerks and myself have rented a house, have two Chinamen cooks, and wo are getting along all right. I will not say anything of Ibe fighting that is going on, because you see It in the papers before we even bear it. Anything you see, however, you may know that it is greatly exaggerated. I NCURABLE DISEASES Many diseasts considered in-- heart of the anthracite district, intimates that there may be serious trouble in that coal region. After May 19, members of tbe union are ordered not to work with men who do not belong to that organization. If the coal companies offer to Interfere with tbe order, the miners will be called out on strike. There has been no general strike in tbe anthracite region since. 1S97. A dispatch from Springfield, III., last week says: "The jury in the case against the Springfield Coal operators' Association, charged with violating the lawa, which has been on trial for a week in the Circuit court, returned a verdict of not guilty, afler being out six boors. This is the second time tbe case has been tried, tbe first time resulting in a mistrial, the jury disagreeing. The plea ot defense made by tbe association was Ibat it is for tbe purpose of maintaining wages, and to Ibis fact many coal miners testified." Tbe largest cargo ot coal ever shipped from Baltimore left that port this week in tbe steamer Westminster, which carries 5,300 tons ot Georgia Creek coal. Tbe coal was shipped by tho Consolidated Coal Company for Admiral Dewey's ships at Manila. She wilt go through tbe Suez Canal. An interesting calculation has been made, which shows Ibat the energy produced by a pound of good coal equals the work of one man for one day. One square mile of a seam ot coal only four feet deep could therefore be made to exceed tbe work of 1,000,000 men for ao years. Manager Ben W. Robinson ot the Whitley Coal Company was here this week on a visit and business trip. He Is just recovering from an injury lately received in the mine by slate falling on him. This is the third accident he has met with tbe past few months, one time falling from a coal tip, and another time beiog struck by a compress lever knocking him unconscions, and with all Ihese mishaps, Ben is still full of visa and vigor, but longs to be back among friends here. VVADDILL, Cashier' thirty-fiv- God-sen- d post-gradua- It is a fact beyond successful contradiction that the St. Bernard Coal Company have, by Ibe quality of tbeir coal and fair dealings, established such a trade throughout the United States and Mexico that the assailing of them or tbeir coal by Secretary Kennedy, of the U. M. W. wilt avail nothing. This coal has been on the market for about thirty years and so popu lar has it grown with the consumers that for many years tbey have been unable lo supply demands during Ibat season of the year when coal Is needed. Kennedy, of Ibe United Mine Workers, in an interview published in the Evansville Journal admits that the Earlington mines cannot be organized by bis organization, which shows how futile have the efforts of his representatives been hero the past few years and confirms the fact that the miners here prefer a condition of peace and harmony to that of strikes and poverty. Thomas Longstaff has severed bis con Coal Comnection with the pany who are now sinking a new shaft. There are few belter practical miners than he is and bis services will prove valuable lo them. The admission is made by labor agitators that the St. Bernard Coal Company is now paying more for mining coal than they demand, yet if their advice had been listened to, the miners here would have many times thrown up their work and lived on the charity ot other miners who chanced lo be at work. Mining Engineer Howard White is busy completing a map of the new Arnold coal tip and track running to same. Quite a number ot the colored miners of Earlington availed themselves of the opportunity to visit Evansville, last Sunday. An excursion train always catches some of them. Twenty-seve- n coal mines in Illinois are now shut down on account of labor troubles. Governor Tanner, ot Illinois, has found It necessary to write a long article defending his action taken in the strike trouble. It is now stated that the Hecla Coal Co. will, when the new shaft is completed, load coal at both the new and the old tipples. When coal commands a better price than the home productions, it is hardly necessary to make the claims of it being a superior coal. So Ibe actions of the Evansville consumers speak louder than words when tbey purchase St. Bernard coal at a higher price thin the home article. Sfopkins (Lounty Madisonville, Ky. GRDVE Geth-seman- CHILL TDNIC TASTELESS MEDICINE for the MILLION.. A covenant is a mutual compact between two or more persons. Abraham nnil Abinelecb mado n covenant Joshna made a covenant with tho people. Jonathan and David mado a covenant The covenants of God with man practically partake of the samo characteristics. It is obvious, however, that in any Covenant between God and man God must make tho initial movement God agrees or pledges Himself to do certain things dependent upon certain action by man. In tho covenant of works He promised man eternal lifo on condition of perfect obedience. In tho covenant of graca Ho promises to man eternal life, dependent upon man's faith in Christ God's covenant has been essentially tho same iu all ages, though its form has been constantly changing to suit the changed conditions of human life At ono timo it was tho promiso of tho woman's seed j to Noah the promiso of forbearance; to tho patriarchs tbe promiso of a son; to Moses the prcmiso of a prophet; to tho monarchy the promiso of a king; to Isaiah the promiso of a suffering servant, nnd then nt last in Christ all forms men realized. Tho incarnate son cf God was tho woman's seed, Abraham's son, David's royal child and successor and Jehovah's servant Thns God always has and always will keep his covenant. But wo also may covenant with God We may make solemn and Bacred pledges to God that wo will perform certain duties in life. Every Endeavorer has mado n covenant with God. Tho covenant is tho Christian Endeavor pledge. God's attitude toward His covenant with us should decide for us our attitudo toward our covenant with God 1. God remembers nis covenant "Ho hath remembered Hi3 covenant forever. " God never forgets His promises to ns, but alas, how often wo forget our promises to Him I How many Endeavor-er- s havo forgotten their solemn covenant with God. Let ns take God as a model and not forget our covenant 3. God is impressed with tho solemn and sacred character of His covenant Ho confirmed it with an oath, ewearing even by nimself that Ho would perforin it How lightly many Endeavorers esteem their promises to Godl They would not fail to meot n friend upon ap pointment, yet how often they fail to keep their appointments with God. 8. God's covenant is an everlasting covenant. It was not fornday, but forever. Tliero should bo moro of this divino character ot permanence and perpetuity in our covenant with God. Biblo Readings.
