Davis, familiarly known as "Will Hand," had a shooting scrape at Loch Mary near the boat house Wednesday afternoon, the outcome of a slight altercation over the use of a worthless and sunken wreck of an old skiff. The first of the shooting was at very close range, but neither man was hit although several shots were fired on either h used revolvers and Davis' weapon was one of which he was very proud. Marshal Barnctt heard of the racket and took both men in before they got out of Earlington. Both had started in the direction of Barnsley where they live, bmith was found at Walter Allmon's and Davis was overtaken in a lane south of Main street. The latter said he was on his way to give himself up to thd marshal. When questioned Davis would not talk except to remark that "it wasn't like shooting at a mark." Davis' stepfather's nane was Hand and in that way the boys with whom he grew up called him Will Hand." Smith did not hesitate to tell how the matter occurred and his story seemed to be materially substantiated by eye witnesses to the shooting. his story an altercation occurred over a worthless eld skift which both men wanted to use, but which would float with neithsr, and Davis drew his revolver and fired three shots before Smith returned the fire. It terminated in a running fire, Davis shooting as he ran and Smith returning the fire. These words fit the western case with equal force and the preacher's definition of a "scab" is good the world river. That part of his ut terances concerning "scabs" will bear repeating again. The United Mine Workers Journal of last issue contains an appeal for aid for tbe six thousand miners of Arkansas who are now in idleness through the orders of the U. M. W.'s leaders. What a pity that those bliod'leaders could not be made to bear tbe entire cost of tbe strikes. In fact if they can find sufficient work to raise the necessary means for family support they are satisfied, and being the case how foolish such it does look for tbem to tale tbe advice ot Boss Ditcher and throw down their shovels and beg the brother at work for food and clothing. Boss Ditcher who bas charge of the southern Indiana strike says the cause of trouble was the discharge of thirty-siminers at Evansville while from other sources we bear tbat the reason tbe men are now idle is that the operators of south ern Indiana refuse to pay the scale of wages demanded and as coal orders are few and far between dnring the hot sum mer months they close thier mines before yielding to unjust demands. Pratt, the logical, clean, popular candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor of Kentucky, is being overwhelmed with letters from leading and representative Repub licans all over the State of Kentucky. They endorse him and have urged his announcement. It is only this that has induced Judge Pratt to again enter the political arena. With the family strife of the past in mind, the Republicans of the State who have the good of the party at heart and look to the time of harmony, unity and success now turn naturally to Judge Pratt as the candidate who can carry to success the banner of good government in the State of Kentucky. Pie has been and is now free entirely from any alliance or identification with any of the factional feeling or strife that has played havoc in the past with the party in the State. A man, an able jurist, a finished speaker, a careful politician with unsullied record, Judge Pratt is the logical candidate of the hour and with him in the lead, the Republicans will again carry Kentucky, a triumph for which they can have no hope if by any means the representative of.any faction should ambush and capture the nomination. broad-gauge Pratt for Governor. Clifton J. Pratt was born in Woodford county, Illinois, and came to Kentucky in boyhood. His father was a native of Virginia and emigrated to Illinois in the early settlement of that State, and here the now distinguised jurist and gentleman was given birth and an humble start in a life which he was in after years to elevate and dignify by his own personal efforts and achievements of mind ana Heart. He was reared a poor boy and his education came by his own individual hard efforts and earnest application, What he is he has made himself and the honors and high station he has attained in the legal, the judicial, the intellectual, the moral and the social world are his by right of conquest; for by his own good ef forts he has won them. Judge Pratt studied law at Madi sonville with O. Waddill and has practiced his profession continu ously there and with eminent sue cess for more than twenty-fivHe has enjoyed an exyears. ceptionally large practice and gained a most enviable reputa- ation as a lawyer and a speaker at the bar and before the people. He was elected to the State Senate and served one term, in 1881-8- 2. At the expiration of this term he was tendered a by both counties, Hopkins and Christian, but declined on account of the. fact that the race for and the encumbency of the office would seriously interfere with his law practice. In 1892 he was elected to the office of Circuit Judge in the Fourth Judicial district composed of the counties of Hopkins, Caldwell, Crittenden and Livingston. His record on the bench is irreproachable for ability, dispatch and unbiased justice of decision. An interesting incident of the man's humble beginning is the fact that one of the first men to shake Mr. Pratt's hand after he received the nomination for Circuit Judge was an old colored man with whom he had worked at twenty-fivcents a day when a boy. And the colored men are in a body enthusias tically forjudge Pratt for Governor. Judge Pratt has been a consist ent Republican and has kept in line with the party organization and the support of its candidates. He has never been a party to any e Help... Hut Ho says it Is nil nothing, it may bo a great nothing or n small nothing, but unless Ho doea it through us it will bo only wood, hay nnd stubblo to bo burned up nnd result in nothing but Joss. Is It not wonderful to consider that tho vino makes itself dependent upon tho branches to bear fruit? Grapes ore novcr gathered from tho main Btcm of tho vino, but ni ways from tho brandies, now growth. 0. "If a man abldo not in Mo, ho is cost forth as a branch nnd Is withered, and men gather them and cast them into tho flro, nnd they oro burned." This helps to explain tho first clause of verso 2. Tho branches that do not bear oro llko tho salt that has lost Its savor and Is trodden un der foot of man (Math, v, 18). 7. "If yo abltlo In Slo nnu My words nbldo In you, yo shall ask what yo will, anditshnll bo dono unto you." This is about tho samo as chapter xlv, 13, 14, and liicludca tho thought of being about His business nnd seeking only His glory. Abiding in Him Includes our weakness yielded to His strength, Ills strength mado perfect in our weakness, ills nro mndo manifest by His Spirit in us. Tho Spirit works through nnd by tho word. 8. "Herein is My Father glorlllcd, that yo r much fruit; so shall yo bo My disciples." In chapter vill, 31, Ho said, "If yo contlnuo In My word, then nro yo My disciples Indeed." Tho word in ns will cause us to contlnuo in His word, nnd by the word nnd tho Spirit we shall Ijo filled with tho fruits of righteousness which nro by Jesus Christ unto tho glory nnd pralso of God (Phil. 1, 11). Tho fruit of thoSpIrlt is lovo, joy, licace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Gal. v, 22), nnd whatever God docs with us or wherever Ho places us wo may bo sure that His tlcslro is to havo us bear mora fruit. 0, "As tho Father hath loved Me, so havo I loved you; contlnuo yo in My love," Wo must persistently bellcvo that Ho loves us with an uuclianglug love, nn everlasting lovo, n love that brought Him from heaven to earth for us, a lovo that spared not Himself and will therefore with Himself freely glvo us all things (.Tor. xxxl, 8; Itom. vill, 32). Wo must over believa Tho Sou of God lovodino nnd gnvo Himself for mo (Gnh 11, 20), and in nil our service tho thought of our 'hearts should bo "Unto Him who loved me (lovcth mo) nnd washed mo from my sins In His own blood" (Itev. i.C). 10. "If yo keep My commandments, yo sliall abldo In "My lovo, oven as I liavo kept my Father's commandments nnd abldo In His lovo." no did always thoso things that pleased tho Father (chapter vill, 29). But how can wo bo in nny mcasuro thus pleasing unto Hlmf Tho answer is found in such passages ns II Cor. vl, 10, "God liath said, I will dwell in them nnd walk in them," nnd Hcb. xlll, 20, 31, "Tho God of peaco working in you that which Is well pleasing In His sight through Jesus Christ." If you hskjiow It is to bo dono, what is our part, tho answer Is in Horn, vl, 13; xil, 1: "Yield yourselves unto God, as thoso thnt nro allvo from tho dead. Present your bodies n living sacrifice aud bo not conformed to this world." 11. "Thcso things havo I spoken unto you that My joy might remain in you and that your Joy might bo full." Compare xlv, 25; xvl, 1, 83, and sco how Ho would havo us also never offended, but finding peaco in Him oven in tribulation. Tho remaining verses of this chapter teach us that wo must not expect better treatment than Ho received, but in nil tliat coplo do to us or say of us wo may havo Ills peace and joy, which was not dependent upon feelings or circumstances, but was found in His oneness with tho Father and tho consciousness of His approval. Wo may learn to say, "Though flocks and herds, vluo, ollvo nnd fig tree all fall, yet I will rejolco In tho Lord; I will joy In tho God of my salvation" (nab. ill, 18). lx-a- abide 2 Anthracite Coal, when you can get ST.
