following taken from the Pana 111 Daily Beacon Light of April 13 gives the utterances f a fearless minister of the gospel at the grave ot a man murdered by Pana mob What this preacher says in the presence of such a eath and under the conviction of duty and in the face of personal anger must cary with it the con v of truth Probably never before in the history of any community or of any land under similar circum stances have the words ofa min istcr been received with the ap prcciation that those of Rev UofGilmer pastor of the First M E Church of this city were yesterday afternoon Rev Gilmer conducted the funeral services over the remains of Frank Coburn whose life was sacrificed during the riot last Monday Rev Gilpu a r pldmitFor these words he voluntarily stands wholly responsible They re not directed to those who are of innocent None but those whose cconscience applies the truth need feel the sting As a natural conse quence Rev Gilmers statements yesterday created considerable com ment but the unamity of favor with which they were received can not go unnoticed Psalm qp i6 of 2 Lift up thyself thou Judge t thhe3 Lord how long shall the wicked how long shall the wicked uriumph4 How long shall they utter w and speak hard things and all the in workers of iniquity boast them selves 4 peoietage 6 They slay the widow and the l HPsalm 4 3 My heart was hot within me while I was musing the fire burned then spake Iwith my tongue i Friends Jam aware that these words may seem at first sight pe culiar words from which to preach a funeral sermon but this is a pe culiar occasion I have been a Methodist preacher for nearly twentyseven years and this is the first occasion in aIr that time that I have been called to stand and perform the last offices of the churchover the body of armir dcrcd man I had hoped that another would stand today where I am called to stand for I felt that there arc words which ought to be said which I would rather that another should say than I But it has seemed to me that the time has come when somebody ought to speak out when the Church of I God ought no longer to keep si lence In the presence of iniquity I and being called by the wish of I the friends to conduct this service 4 I shall speak In the fear of God 4 what it is in my heart to say I 4 want to say that naught I say is said in malice and none but those I whose conscience applies the truth need feel the sting To any such I have no apology to offer Of the merits of the question as between the miners and operators I have nothing to say This is not I 1the time nor place to discuss that I question There may be and there doubtless arc two sides to that question It may be and it doubtless is true that one may stand upon either side of that question and be at least partly right I am not here today to discuss the ques tion of the relations of labor and capital They may admit of discussion but on the sacredness of law and of human life there can be but one correct opinion I am aware that what shall say today will be misunderstood and misrepresented and so I shall try to make it so plain that the way niuirnanthotigli aoo1need not therein For the last seven months at least this city has been in a state virtual anarchy We have seen e u prccedcntedspectacle of a city in one of the most prosperous ates of this union ether on the e hand under the hands unless under the dictates of the alien officers of a lawless and anarchistic miners union Three times within a year a lawless mob has held the streets of Pana Twice within a year theyI have endangered the lives of innocent men women and children in their mad rage and thirst for blood We have seen an officer of the law in the pursuit of his duty shot upon the public street and maimed for life and so far as I can learn by diligent inquiry no one knows any effort on the part of theI constituted authorities to appre prebend thecowardly assassin who lacked only the nerve and notI the will beginning of the trouble and from what I saw and from facts which came to mlknowledge before and since I thoroughly convinced in my ow mind that the outrageous rioting of Monday was the outcome of a deliberate and carefully planned conspiracy 1 walked these streets and saw in the u pnderSpringfield rifles I saw them parading the streets with no badges of authority visible with no ono in authority over them firing at random with no opponent visible and chasing after unoffcnsivo passers by blocks awayfrom the scene of excitement hunting men a thsbeasts I saw them with loaded guns searching places of business i not for criminals not for those who had been engaged in riot but for what they called scabs mean k an honest breferredLing in idleness upon the earnings of other people I heard them with horrible oaths exhorting each other to shoot the heart out of him on sight A dozen armed ruffians against an unarmed man who wanly s 0 endeavoring to keep out of trouble And this I say again not a criminal but an honest man whose only offense was that he chose rather to work for his dali read than that his family should exist upon charity or starve And these are the creatures armed with d 0eadlylad sworn to keep the peace the man who like a coward and poltroon dared not face the storm h Detard leaving the city at the mercy of this band of ruffians I make no charges but with a knowledgI of the meaning of say I bolding myself personally responsi b le for my wprds I give it as my firm conviction that the riot of Monday was the result of a delib erate plan to terrorize this city Friends arc my words bitter As I looked yesterday in the face of the heartbroken wife as 1 held her hand and tried to think of some word of comfort as I spoke to the crushed and stricken father as I stand today m the presence of the dead and think of this young life cut short in the midst of its promise I feel that words arc inadequate Why do I say these things ecause somebody is responsible for this state of affairs Who is it Primarily the local miners union whose members have incited and carried on riot 1Secondarily competent sheriff who has used his authority as an officer of the peace to aid abet and countenance the reach of the peace It is aprin iple of law that a man is respon ible for his acts and the consequences which flow from them and this being trueI stand here today to express it as my dehber ate judgment that the blood of Frank Coburn and the other viiItims of the deputies riot is on o head of Thos J Downey who deliberately placed this city in the h Icandsand bloodthirsty Week DeKlnnlnn April 1C Comment bytjlev S II Doyle TOPIC The eternal morning Bad modern missions Isa Ix IJ2eThis chapter is a song of triumph upon glorified Zion It is a magnificent picture of tho church in its glory and beauty after the light of God has shono flpon it and may bo looked upon as a picture of tho ideal Zion after the return from captivity or a picture of the New Jerusalem or heaven Ihrco characteristic of this eternal morning are promInentdarkness moral and spirit ual in tho church is to disappear many of the nations of the world are to bo gathered into heaven tim nations that will not servo God aro to bo do Btroycd The bearing of this passage upon the subject of modern missions is clearly evident 1 In tho light of the eternal morn- Ing modern missions are seen to pay Modern missions have two specific pur poses 1 to dispel the spiritual dark- nesS of tho world and replace it with the light of God and 2 to lead tho gentile nations to God through Christ and to eternal salvation Tho picture of tho prophet in its application to eternity proves that both these results aro to be accomplished Tho darkness of tho church is to be dispelled and the light of God is to abino upon it The nations of the world are to flock to tho church of God and are to bring their wealth and consecrate it to God Theso facts provo to us that mission work is successful that it does pay The cry that missions are a failure should be forever silenced by this picture of eternity as given to the prophet by God Himself It gives us a view of the result missionary efforts and it is ono that should encourage and inspire all who aro interested in this great cause of God to increased zeal and earnestness in tho cause 2 In the light of the eternal morn leg wo see tho necessity of modern missions Darkness shall cover tho earth except where tho church exists How important therefore that the church of Christ should extend over the whole world that this glorious light of God may be worldwide Again it is said that at that time the nation and king horn that will not servo God shall per- Ish those nations shall be utterly wast ed But how can tho heathen nations servo God unless they first know God And how can they ever know God except the church of Christ sends them the knowledge of God T The responsibility for tho salvation of the world is upon us How will wo meet It De Relying on the Lord Josus Christ for salvation and trusting in God for strength I promise Him No ono seems to know who composed this introduction The theologians think that there is a confusion of council at its recent session to adopt after the phrase 1 will pray to Him and road the Bible everyday the words that I will sup port my own church and its services in every way in my power If This is Elizabeth of Austria The biography of Elizabeth re cently published by Harper Brothers under the title The Mar tyrdom of an Empress contains many interesting incidents and ad ventures of which the Empress was the heroine during her long aqd eventful life Elizabeth and her constant companion the author used to disguise themselves and visit the slums of the cities nursing the sick and comforting the afflicted One night they were riding through the outskirts of Petsh when they heard a womans screams from a rickety hovel On the impulse ot the moment says the authorIIwe both leaped from our horses and rush ing to the door and pushing it open we found ourselves in a villianously dirty room where a huge ruffian of a man was drag byhering her vigorously as he did so Before I realized what was hap pening the Empress had laid her heavy huntingcrop about the feb lows face and so surprised was heat our unexpected appearance and at this vigorous onslaught that he dropped his victim and stared at us in blank amazement His astonishment was however as nothing to ours when the illused dame sprang to her feet and put ting her arms akimbo demanded in her shrillest Hungarian and with a torrent of invectives what we hussies meant by interfering with her husband The Empress burst into a peal of laughter and taking a couple of gold ten gulden pieces she handed them to this model benedict exclaiming Beat her my friend beat her all she wants She deserves it for being so loyal to you Red Hill Jottings During the beautiful days of latt week when it looked as if spring bad
