All'the bitter feelings that existed betwaen these two elements during the campaign of 1896 will, it is b "lieved, be revived, by Mr. Bry- an'd latest communication to Mr. Belmont and tbeatter's reply. It"wa5 the intention of Mr. Belmont, Mr. Whitney Gov. "There is some difference of opinion among Chicago platform Democrats as to the wisdom of, Mr. Bryan's course, but most of them applaud it, while agreeing that it is not calculated to make friends for'tluTparty among gold Democrats. There was a quiet, informal eel ebration of the second anniversary of the inauguration of President McKinley which the country has thus far overlooked. It took the form of an industrial boom under which on the 4th of March more than sixteen thousand workmen employed in iron, steel and cotton mills received notice of a voluntary increase in their wages. The affair was a Spontaneous and cheerful recognition of the thoroughness with which the pledges made by the advance agent of prosperity has been fulfilled. New York Mail and Express. "We have quit discussing the tariff;" said President McKinlry at Boston. The necessity has passed. The results of protection leave no room for further discus sion. In the words of a promi recently ut nent manufacturer, tered, "The United States is no longer the world's market the whole world is now our salesroom." Our labor is employed at better wages than are paid elsewhere on the globe, and is now given constant employment at increasing wages. All this makes the best home market for products of the farm. Notwithstanding the fact that our labor is better paid than in any country, our home industries have been so developed and cost of production so cheapened, that our manufacturers are able to and do now undersell the world. President McKinley'j address to llio Commercial Club in Boston contained a frank announcement that the Protectionist "racket" is played out. "We have quit discussing the Tariff, ' said Mr. McKinley, "and have turned our attention to getting trade wherever it can be found." New York Evening Pott. Why have we "quit discussing the Tariff?" Simply because the "Protectionist racket" the priciple or policy of Protectionhas vanquished Its opponents. There e is not a patch or sbred of the old theory, to the advocacy of which the Evening Post gave the best years and ablest efforts of its life, that has not been destroyed by the irreslstable force of events. In the last Presidential campaign the Democrats were careful to avoid atWhen the Fifty-fift- h tacks on Protection. Congress passed Ihe Dingley Tariff act a goodly number of Democrats voted for it, and oposition to it was merely pere organs and a functory. The few of their disciples in Congtess entured the prediction the solemn warningThat the Dingley act would prove fatal to our export tradejn manufactures, which had the attained some prominence under law, in spite. f the "perfidy and dishonor" of that measure. But when that export trade showed an unexampled growth under the conditidns which said would kilt it off, the the desciplcs of Cobden and mouthers of Mill were about ready to give up in despair. One may look through all the political contentions that civilized nations have witnessed since the advent of parlies and campaigns without finding any record of a defeat so crushing as the American have suffered, a victory so complete and beneficent at the Protectionists have won. There will never be another Tariff campaign in the United States. No other President will follow the example of Cleveland in getting Free Trade injected into his understanding and entering upon such a fight as he opened in 18S7 and ended when statesmen of bis own parly compelled him to desist. Protection has built up our industries one after another, nntit we are rapidly taking that position in the markets of Ibe world that our chief competitor formerly held. And the "rackei" is poiiibly not "played out" yet It may be needed to create other new industries, to win other victories like those of silk and tin plate. Washington "Post." From Ihe Bowling Green Times. A warrant charging Jim Johnson with stealing coal was up for trial in Police Court. The Judge asked Jim whether he was guilty or not guilty of the chdrge. "Judge, I would like to know when that coal was stolcd before I answers that question," he said. In explanation he stated that "endurin' " that cold spell he "lakened" a sack of coal, but had stolen none since. The case was continued. of tho mines last week. He is a good miner, when able for duty Soliciting Agent John Hogan, of the Hecla Coal Company, is again out on the road, looking after men who can be induced to buy coal. Even the few days warm weather of last week bad the effect of decreasing orders for coal. An agreement between tho miners- and operators of Illinois was last week entered into, acd peace may be secured for the coming summer. ' A vein of coal has been discovered at Preston, Ky., and a company will soon be formed lo develop it. Foreman Toombs and crew have been hard at work the past week or two making more boiler room for the St. Uernard Coal Company. Several Louisville capitalists have lately formed a company to develop coal mines in Middle Tenn. In compliance, no doubt, with Ihe wishes of Governor Tanner of Illinois, who is opposed to labor importation from one Slate to another, it is believed the legislature of that State Will pass the bill referred to below: "Springfield, III,, March 14. The House passed today tho Drew Dill, designed to prevent the importation of large bodies of laborers from other States, such as was witnessed last year, when negro miners from Alabama were brought to Virden and Pana, precipitating a deadly battle at the former place, Only four negative votes were cast. "The bill punishes deception, false advertising, false pretenses and unlawful force in procuring workingmen'in other States, or Inducing them to change places of employment in this Stale. It prohibits arraed'guards protecting imported working-me- n from coming into this State without the written consent of the Governor. "The House passed Mr. Brown's bill to protect the lives and limbs of miners from the dangers resulting from Incompetent miners working in the mines in this Stale and to provide for the examination of persons seeking employment as miners in the State and to prevent the employment of persons in coal mines. The bill creates a miners' examining board Ip each district, and requires coal miners to be examined and procure a certificate of competency," - LOCOMOTIVE BLASTS. Since The Bee proof reader let slip a sentence in a recent communication that did not prove a too great familiarly with the ten commandments, there has been some fun abroad in the land. Lawyer Johnson and Joe Mothershead are the only readers yet heard from who were Bible scholars enough to discover the error at a glance and the explanation made by the former is perhaps the most plaus-ablAs a palliation to the offense of the proof reader some in- inquiry has been instituted to dis cover the average ability of grown ups to give in their proper order the ten commandments off hand. Chief Dispatcher Col. Sheridan says he tested twenty-fivmen (and it was not, a crowd of railroaders either), on one occasion, and not one of them could recite the commandments. Among these were some church deacons. A preacher friend says that not one man in a thousand can do it. Among the amusing tilings that have occurred through the oversight of proofreaders is one in the last issue of Litera ture, published by Harper & Bros., and conducted by Mr. John Ken- drick Bangs. In this instance Mr. William Dean Howells was made to say that "Washington went and lived in England and on the Contihalf hisJjfe." This invention has been accomplished by John M, Wilson, of New York, who is no in the city. Mr. Wilson says the process is purely a chemical problem and that the union of certain elements Is all that is necessary to accomplish it perfectly. If Mr Wilson's invention does all that is claimed for it, and there seems no doubt about it, will be recognized as the greatest boon the nineteenth century civilization has received. "By this method air in conducted to any type of boiler furnaces through pipes leading from a fan. This air is heated in transit and at the other point of the entry which is above the coal bed is combined with a chemical compound solution called The union of the oxygen of Ibe air, the carbon released by Ihe coal, accelerated by the pyroblast, causes the furnace's in slant ignition and the sweeping of the coal bed by an Incandescent sheet of flame, which takes up the coal distilants as fast as decomposed and converts tbem into carbonic acid gas, which, assisted by hydrogen, yields the highest degree of beat possible from the coal. "Mlesidcnt Agent for Karlington and Vicinity. W 9 m Soutbrrn Department, Home Office Louisville, Ky. In order to win tbe race at tho Isthmian games one had to carefully train him-eel- f for the contest, aud this necessitated many self denials, "temperauce iu all things." To win tbo boxing contest one mast not only feign heavy blows, bat actnally striko them. There must be nn fighting "as one who beateth tho nir," but as ouo who "strikes under the eyes." This is tho negative nnd positive sido of tho Christian life. We must deny ourselves, but that Is not all. We must bo in active operation against evil within and without us. There are things we must not do and thiugs that wu must do. The successful contestant in either of theso contests had first to master himself before ho mastered others. To da so he had to deny himself of many things in training and had also to learn to do certain things efficiently. Tho Christian who will master the duties of the Christian life and win the eternal crown of reward must be by these Bame principles. He must first of all master himself. He must bo willing to deny himself of everything thnt will weaken his power over himself or will threaten to rule him if he does not rule or destroy it. Christianity teaches self mastery. It praises and eulogizes the man who is ablo to control himself. It points out tho absolute necessity of felt control if we aro to win tbe race and the battle of (ho Christian lifo. Nor does it ignore or try to conceal the foot that self mastery demands self denial, temperance in all thiugs. It emphasizes this fact and illustrates it. Paul here declares that he keepq his body under that ho brings bis physical desires under perfect control ; that bo bruises it, leads it about aa a slave and smites it under tho eyes. This language is ot course only figurative. Self torture never produces self mastery. It weakens the body rather than strengthens it. Constant self denying labor for others is undoubtedly fho idea in the mind of thu apostle. Tims he kept bis body under and made it conduce tn his growth in power and in grace. Self mastery is a Christian grau much needed today. It is needed not only iu reference, to but iu nil things, in drinking, in eating, iu think-iug- , in speaking, in actions of ull kinds. Many Christians practice sobriety, iu drink, but aro very intern pernte iu speech, in desires, in habits of other descriptions. We must be temperate iu all things if wo would win tbo prize of eternal life. We must da but ouo tiling, aud whatever iu our lives does not assist us in tills one thing must bo controlled or destroyed. If contestants for worldly prizes are so ready aud willing to deny themselves for prizes which soon fade away and are forgotten, how much mora ready should wo bo to do tho same for an eternal crown Bible Readings.
