Gomez to pro vIde for the return of the Cubans to their peaceful pursuits and whose york was barely accomplished before his1 sudden death on December 11 AOHKEMKNT WITH GARCIA It was then agreed that the United States in order to secure the prompt resumption of labor on the plantations of the island with a view of promoting the speedy revival of prosperity and settled conditions should trlbute about 3000000 among the 30000 said to be still under arms in the ratio of l6o n man the officers in proportion to their rank td receive a greater amount the ordinary enlisted men to bp discharged with sums less than 100 depending on the length of serv ice and other considerations For over n nionth the pay corps of the army has been making ready to cary out this arrangement the national defense fund being available for the purpose LISTS WERE PREPARED Accurate list of the soldiers entitled to compensation had to be prepared anti other formalities gone through It was intended that the Cubans at the proper time should apply at established American garrisons in the va rious provinces where on laying down their arms and presenting the proper credentials they were to receive their quota of the allotment from the pay officers at the stations In the mean time Gen Brooke and his chief subor dinates have been endeavoring to give employment mostly of a permanent character to large numbers of Cu Scheme which was operating antis factorily to most Cubans and has struck for greater stakes It is of finally known hero that he is endeav ceplIngpation and is urging all the natives of every grade to stay with him in the field until the United States is como pelled to accede to his terms of die bnndment Gomez alleges that his army consists of 40000 men and he insists that most of them shall be paid for three years service at the rates OtmyHetion of independence February 24 1895 as the beginning of the period for which himself and his forces are to be remunerated and for himself with the rank of lieutenantgeneral ho will be satisfied with 11000 annually the American rate for that gradeAN ARMY OF GENERALS Gomez also has about 20 major gen erolsfor each of whom he wants 7 500 annually and his army is equipped with nearly 200 brigadier generals each rated according to the United States army pay table at 5500 annually This aggregates the nice little sum of 3783000 for generals alone then there are colonels lieu tenantcolonels ana majors whose numbers run into the thousand The privates do not amount to much for they are comparatively few but each of them will require 648 and tho army paymasters who figured out the total have reported that over 57000 000 will be required to gratify all the P Porter went with Mr Quesada ea an average of 1425 a man It is to meet these demands shall poll in favor of the proposed graded school TilE great increase of American exports over imports has become a known faEt everywhere and is commented on daily by the press of this and other lands It is one great expression of American pros perity and one of the proofs that either Republican doctrine and the Republican administration are wise or that Republicans are the luckiest dogs alive It has almost be come an axiom that Republican rule and good times are synoni mous But there are countries with a different story to tell French im ports for 1898 increased 84033 Goo while the exports decreased 90957000 The British Board of Trade report that for the year 1899 the United Kingdom pur chased foreign merchandise of the value of 2353020990 an increase of 97876190 over the to tal imports 0 1897 In 1898 Great Britain sold foreign countries merchandise valued at 1166953 960 which was a decrease of 4 144580 as compared with the preceding year Great Britain is losing under lice trade while the United States gains under wise protection laws The Peace Treaty The delay caused by obstruct ionists in Congress in the ratifica tion of the peace treaty is a disgrace to American citizenship and fully deserves the most severe denunci ations being expressed on all sides by press and people But in these days men are even found who bear the name American yet who give comfort for financial or partisan reasons to the countrys enemies The representative of the unruly Phillipine insurgents who have just now been a source of anxiety to this Government has received comfort and advice from some traitorous person or persons who are permitted to go at large about our National Capitol and feed at the public crib The time is not yet past that we should be Americans The Democratic Stew Editor Enloe doesnt give the Louisville Dispatch much of a joll in his parting salutation In fac he rather tries to black that pa pers eye in his letter of resigna tion But thats the Goebel of i and Enloe and Goebel are hand ii glove Since he could not carr the Dispatch wholly for the ambi tions of Goebel and himself in leaving it he tries to sandbag what little character the paper had Thereare men in this county who take the Dispatch simply from what they consider a sense of duty from their party standpoint and many of these will be found favor ing the candidacy of Gen Hardin These men are trying however bitter the pill may be to some of them to be consistent in what the look upon as party fealty in the continued support of a wrecked and splintered platform and its lost builders And here arises a spec ulation Gen Hardin made a can vass on a platform he could not endorse Gen Hardin the State in the interest oi the es tablishment of the Dispatch Now Editor Enloe announces that that paper is going to destruction He ought to know It has been his influence and management Can it be that Goebel and Enloe are playing for the indirect support of more powerful journals and are dumping the Dispatch upon Gen Hardin and his candidacy As rats leave a decaying ship Some philosophers advise the man who would be successful to keep the company of men and enterprises that are successful and prosperous to keep up a continued appearance of successWhatever are their secret springs- of action our Democratic friends are just now cooking up a most the horses plunged over an ugly embankment The jury awarded Mrs Davis 2000 for the bodily injuries she sus tained and SIO to each of her brothers for the damage done to the vehicle Exchange Business its highest perfection in the rich well watered soil- According to William Dinwiddie he special correspondent of Has pets Weekly in Puerto Rico railroads and modern rapidtransit facilities are very much needed in the island Don Ibo Bosch in 1888 secured a franchise from the- panish government to build and- perate a railroad which was to encircle the island The corpora tion was to be known as the Com- lania de las Ferocarnles de Puerto Rico The road was to be finished in six years and the government guaranteed eight per cent to the corporation on the capital invested not to exceed 10000000 This oadwas promptly begun at three points At the end of four years or in 1892 a single track narrow gauge road had been laid north ward and eastward from San Juan to Carolina by way of Piedras six teen mites in all and the grading had been partially completed to Rio Grande ten miles farther while from San Juan westward it was completed for fortyeight miles to the town of Camuy At Agua dilla it level best girl who leaned out of the window to bid him adieu He held her lovingly the hand and ran alongside tne moving train talking rapidly Now there is a water crane at the north ern end of the platform and a large a barrel is sunk just the vent of the crane to receive the waste water He mounted the edge of the barrel and landed plumpinto the cask of cold splashed upon the surrounding roofs The tram moved off rapidly the crowd roared with laughter and the luckless swain extricated him self with great difficulty his ardent affection having declined from theo boiling point to several degrees below zero Experience keeps a dear school but it seems that there is a certain class of who are incapable of receiving instructions elsewhere and Joe Henly of this city has just completed a thorough course at that highpriced institution It seems that Joe secured a rig from a livery stable here and drove over to Madisonville last Saturday where he remained several hours until the roads became so bad that with all the caution he could exercise with his improvedeye sight he could not the buggy He reached the stable however and delivered the horse and maimed vehicle He also delivered some language not lawful for man to utter and which if pertaining to anything historical the nag man would call profane history Now it happened that right in the midst of Joes eurseory remarks Haywood Bradley a col bred gallant of the town was pass ing with his sweetest gal Hay wood remonstrated with Joe for using unSundayschool language in the presence of a lady Joe re torted with a volley ol personal remarks sandwiched with thick slices of profanity Haywood planted a sledgehammer blow upon Joes face who obedient to the Scrip tures turned the other cheek to be smitten Haywood smote the sec ond cheek with such energy that the ground flew up and struck Joe a terrific blow on the back Of course Joe could not whip Hay wood and the earth at one and the sametime so the fight was declared a draw by Joe drawing off his forces and quitting the contest Later Joe faced sternvisaged just ice alias Judge Cowelland although he set up the plaintive wail Youd scarce expect one of my age 19 Chrti tlan Endeavor day Ancient kings of Israel before going to battle offered up bloodless offerings and whole burnt sacrifices in the temple unto God This ninth psalm was prob ably Intended to be sung while the king on such an occasion was making these offerings The psalm consists of three parts J The prayer of the con gregation probably chanted tim Le Tiles while the smoke of the sacrifices ascended to heaven verses 15 2 The king himself takes up tho strain and expresses his faith in God verses 08 8 TIme congregation respond proving again God save the king verse 9 The army of ancient Israel going forth to battle against tho heathen nations of the world may be symbolical of Gods army today going forth to bottle against tho kingdoms of the world Such a con filet Is constantly being waged Tho kingdoms of satan and of this world are constantly arrayed against the kingdom of our Lord nnd Saviour Jesus Christ Tho battle rages more fiercely everyday Tbo elements of evil contend against the elements of good und each one of us is enlisted on the ono aide or the other The desire for victory is tbo great ambition of ono who goes fortb to battle In this psalm wo have pointed out what Gods army must do today to hove sac cess and victory Let us study these es sentials to success 1 Gods army to succeed must be willing to make sacrifice The king mode sacrifices before going forth to battlo Gods chnrchGods people must bo willing to make sacrifices today to bo successful It costs something to win battles War is expensive to tho victor as well its to tho vanquished It will cost Gods people today money tlmo labor sacrifice to war successfully against tbo powers of evil but victory will pay for all the cost 2 Gods army to succeed mast pray to God This both the people anti the king did God decides the destinies of men God gives victory or defeat How necessary then that wo should earnestly nnd fervently beseech Him to bo with us in our struggles 8 Gods army to succeed mutt setup its banners in the name of tho Lord In tho name of oar God wo will setup our banners verse 5 To expect even to succeed wo must bo sure that wo lire advocating the cause of God Wo must not confound the cause of self or of the world with Gods cause Wo must bo on Gods side rather than expect God to be on our side This will give us a just and worthy cause an essential to success Thrice is he armed who bath his quarrel just 4 Gods nrmy to succeed must trust in God Somo trust in chariots some in horse but wo will remember tho tiamoof tho Lord our God verse 7 Faith in God is an absolute essential for success in fighting for God Our trust must bo in Him rather than in man Tho battle is not to the strong but to those who put their faith and trust in GodBible Readings Ps xxvII 10 xxxiii
