The Filipino junta hero yesterday received a cable message from Agonclllo, Aguinaaldo's representative at Washington, declaring thnt the prospects were improving, though the work was difllcult. The absence of direct news from Manila nnd the receipt of secret intelligence from Washington, is causing the gravest anxiety among the Filipinos here. The arrest of Filipinos by Mnj.-GeOtis nnd the news that numbers of Filipinos have fled is regarded as a most serious occurence. It is pointed out by the Filipinos that this Is exactly what happened in 1690 under Gen. Rlnnco, when the Filipinos on the following day, attacked the Spaniards, and the revolution broke out. The members of the Filipino junto In this city say they are so anxious to avct war that they are cabling Manila y urging the Filipinos "not to start hostilities, if there is the remotest possibility of averting trouble." to-da- A CRISIS AT HAND. Tuscola, 111., Jan. 22. Early Friday morning the Bank of Arthur, ten miles Bouthwest of here, was robbed by six men, who blew open the largo safe with dynamite nnd carried away with them between $5,000 and $0,000. The amount is not definitely known, but the bank officials say that it is in excess of $3,000. The burglars would haje secured $3,000 moro had not an unexpected accident occurred. Tlds was the escape of a young farmer, James Ilolfc, whom they held captine inthe bank nil through their operations. ltolfe had lately come from Blue Island, III., to visit his uncle in tho vicinity ot Arthur. During tho night he was dispatched to town for n physician to attend a sick child. Being a stranger in the town, ha inquired for the physician's office. The persons accosted were the men on guard outside trie bank while their partners did tie work inside. ".This is the doctor's offlce, young mnn," said one of tho robbers. "Get right down oft that horso and come rn." As he said this he shoved an ugly revolver in the farmer's face. Itolfe at He wns placed unDnce went'lnside. der nn armed guard and his shoes were removed. He was present during the robbery, but ns it wns dark he could not recognize the men. One of them had a gray beard, but his face was only seen for nn instant from the dash of the explosion. '.Three charges of dynamite were used. Each qxplosiou shook the building, but the last did the work. The charge was so heavy that the safe door was demolished, and pieces of it hurled over a hundred feet. The front end of. the bank was blown out by the concussion, and pieces of steel were iurled through the Odd Fellows' building across the street. Wlille persons In the vicinity heard tho explosion, no one went to the trouble to ascertain the cause of it, and there was no night watchman to disturb the men in their work. Tho robbers had placed a charge in the door of Another safe In the bank, which contained $3,000 more, and were about to attach the fuso when sitcbf he men asked-fo- r a rope.- - - The young farmer, who was nn unwilling captive, though they purposed to hang him. In a moment of desperation he charged the door, hurling the guards violently aside. As he reached the door the robbers fired two shots at him as he ran, and they whizzed past his cars, dangerously near. He was in his baro feet, which were badly lacerated, but he succeeded in geting away and giving the si arm to the villagers, who soon were an the scene. The six bandits were gone, however. Half an hour later it was found that they had stolen a hand-ca- r from tho Vandalia toolhouse and started east. The robbers stopped near Areola, where they abandoned the cnr. That Is the last trace found of them. Bloodhounds were put on the trail, but up to last accounts they had accomplished nothing. The men may have taken the Illinois Central train south at 3:05 a. m., at Areola, although the theory is that at least four of them live, in that place, the other two coming down from Chicago. roUS CO., ktW YOPllC FIFTY-FIFT- H CONGRESS. Good people and bad people, old people and young people, males and females, whites and blacks, lament the badness of the rising generation. They entreat, admonish, scold and threaten the' boys and girls, and are themselves guilty of some ot the acts to which they ob jeet. The father swears, but punishes his boy for the same thing; he goes down in town alter supper and lounges on the street corners or in the stores, but makes his boy hus tle lor home, if he realises the dan gers of a boy's being on the streets after night, when he finds him The doing the same thing. mother tells the gtr! the little girl that if she is not good the colored man will take her oil, or that she is the prettiest, the best, the brightest girl in the town and then wonders why, when the girl becomes older and larger, she is deceptive and vain. The parents talk money, money, nothing but money and then wonder why the boy or girl wants to stay out of school a week just to make a quarter. The parents study little themselves, talk very little to their children about the value of an education and then wonder why the boys and girls arc so little inclined to study. It seems to me that the acts of the boys and girls, which we be- mean, deprecate and abhor are but the results of acts of older ones. It seems to me that we, the older and more mature, are too largely responsible for the bad acts of those younger. It seems to me that when we admonish a boy or girl not to do this or that should take part of the admonition ourselves. rirs. Kcnyon Harper Dead. He lift the Mud. William Gosbel, author of tbe infamous election bill, lately made a law by the Kentucky Legislature, and who is now candidate for Governor of the State, takes pleasure in vilifying all railroad companies in the State, chief among tbem being tbe Louisville & Nashville Company. 'Traveling under a box car in a hammock is a method of progression few men have indulged in. The ordinary tramp is too lazy and too unimaginative to construct such a conveyance ortousoitif made for him. But Harry D. Cooper, wbo is known under the alias of "Railroad Jack, tbe Hammock Rider," has traveled for ten years in thts manner, bas visited many of tbe States and covered over 100,000 miles. He has acquired his alias from a rudely constructed hammock, which he invented to assist him in journeying over the land without buying tickets every time be wants to execute a change of base. He calls the hammock his annual pass and is now using tbo tenth of the series, Tbe trap is made of heavy canvas strung on a couple of strong iron bars, filled with books at tbe ends These books are fastened to the supporting bars of a box car or sleeper, and the traveler is secure inside the hammock. "Tho woman salth unto Him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and tho well is deep. From whence then, hast thou that lUing water?" Whether it bo rich, religious ilc&h, as in Xlcodeinus, or poor, sinful flesh, ns In this woman, it Is In either caso ignorant of spiritual things. Tho well Is too deep, and tho natural man has nothing to drnw with. Tho woman unwittingly described her awn condition In her words to our Lord. Sho thought only of natural water, a ropo and a bucket. Sho did not know tho words of Isa. ill, 3, "With joy shall ye draw water out of tho wells of salvation." Ho testified what no know and had seen. Tlioso who His testimony proclaim Him aa the Truth, but tlioso who rcccivo not His testimony mako Him n liar. Many Eurtenvorcrs aro in collcgo subject to the peculiar temptations of col I ego lifo. Thoy need and want onr special prayers. Tho present is particularly opportune for this observance, becanso recently n great movement has been begun in our colleges nnd universities. Tbe trend of collego thought and life today ns nover before is toward religion, and the Christian religion. It is ono of tho most hopeful dgns of tho times that tho educated young men of our country aro turning moro and moro toward religion. Tho proofs ot it aro flourishing collego Young Men's Christian associations, tbo wonderful students voluntcor movement and great interest on tbo part of thousands of students in general services and work. These facts aro matters of groat rojoicing nnd thanksgiving nnd invito our earnest, united prayers for their continuance, under tbe richest blessing of God. Tho prayer of tho Nineteenth Psalm may well bo called n student's prayer. It is tho prayer of ono who was himsolf a student, and tho petitions contained in it aro particularly applicable to stu dents. Tho writer is n student both of natnro and of tho rovealcd word of God. He sees tho glory of God revealed in tho heavens, tbo firmament, day and night and in tho sun. Thh knowledge has come from study. Ho has also studied tho rovealed law of God, and has seen its beauty and its utility. The petitions of this psalm are also peculiarly adaptable to students in our colleges and universities, away from homo surroundings and influences nnd cultivating tho intellectual eidocf man. For theso things wo may well pray for all students. 1. Tho first petition is for cleansing from secret faults. "Cleanse Thou mo from secret faults" (verse 12). College lifo nbouuds in temptation to "secret faults." TBo boy who at homo has kept nothing from paronts linds it so easy to do many things which ho would not havo tboin know. Thero is n temptation to decoivo professors in recitations and in examinations. Let us pray earnestly that our young men nt collego may bo delivored from "secret fanltH." 2. The second petition is for deliver-anc- o from prosumptuous sins. "Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins. Let them not havo dominion over mo." College lifo breeds presoinp-tnoasuos- s. What tho undergraduate docs not know, in his own opinion, is not worth knowing. It is a scholastic pre sumptuousness that leads to skoptloism and even to atheism.
