double tragedy was enacted at Slaught rsviUe that was at firstI thought to be fatal for the two men most concerned They were WIE McGary and Wren Ashby hisI cousin The former marshal ofI Slaughtersville and the latter deputy marshal Jody Gooch of the same place son of Henry Gooch did the shooting with a double barrelledshotgun Both men were shot in the head and face Mc Gary lost one eye and was badly wounded in the face Ashbys wounds were not so ugly but more serious as shot entered the brain through his eye and unconsciousness and partial paralysis followed making all hope for his life vanish daysHenry Gooch had been arrested and was in the keeping of the deputy sheriff to be taken to Madi sonville on an old charge McGary may have had a hand in the arrest but Ashby took no part Afte wards McGary and Ashby were standing apart from any one else and were in conversation when Jody Gooch came up with a shot gun and fired one barrel at each of the men shooting both in the head After McGary had fallen and with one eye destroyed he raised himself partly from the groundand fired three shots from his revolver at the fleeing form oJ Gooch The last shot cut a door casing just as Gooch jumped out of the way and in at an open door Gooch was arrested by exmar shal O L Coffman and sent to the Dixon jail Henry Gooch the father was taken to Madisdnville where he gave bond As the lat ter got off the train at Madisonville he remarked to an acquaintance that Jody got him a couple of men today and seemed not the least disturbed over the tragedy McGary formerly lived at this place and was popularly known as Buffalo Bill He has many rela tives here For some years he had been a motorman on the Evans ville electric car line and had only recently moved to Slaughtersville Therefore when orders from certain for eign sources found their way hither no great surprise was occasioned The fact that a prominent English railroad company has placed an order for some thirty loco motives with American shops however has attracted widespread attention In looking around for the cause of this new and sud den departure on the part of English in terests one confronts two sufficient number to break the caucus This will delay the consideration- of the railroad bill until tomorrow- It is known that the general plan of the bill will provide a court for the trial of questions concerning the reasonableness of railroad rates within the StatelA serious difference has not been fully settled yet has arisen oyer whether there should be a seperate attorney or solicitor for the court or whether the court should be the place for the complaining party to go in the first In stance It is probable that the caucus will decide in favor of tbe seperate solicitor If it does as the proposed bill now stands the aggrieved shipper passenger or rail roadvill go the State Railroad Solicitor and tell his troubles much In the same manner that a man goes to the County Attorney or a Justice of tbe Peace when his neighbors chickens scratch up his garden or someone threatens to assault him Tbe solicitor will then consider the case and if it is 6f sufficient importance will draw AVER Jfo Mass DOWN IN THE MINES The Hecla Coal Company was not quite ready for pay day before Christmas nd their employes will be made happy ater on- Assistant Machinist W U Cnvioess says although the mining machines are being worked to their full capacity bnt few re pairs have been required on them of late so well are they constructed and managed The fact that the town ordinance does not prohibit the shooting of firecrackers and other fireworks on Christmas day gave tbe young miners here much pleasure and many dollars were spent for fireworks themFrom tbe first of last August up to the present time the St Bernard miners have been rushed with work losing but few days from their labor and with such a record Is it more than one would expect that they take a day or two off at Christmas time A writer for the United Mine Workers Journal who lately made Madiionville a visit takes a gloomy view of the projpecls for an organization there lie says even the ministers there preach that the servant should obey the master and why not so long as tbe master pays him goodwages and gives hits good advice by warning him to beware of impostors When the St Bernard Company gave the word last Friday that all was ready to pay off the men a grand rush was made for the office and it was indeed a pleasing sight to see the miners soon after take their departure with gold silver and greenbacks in their possession These miners highly Appreciate the tact that they work for a good company whose word is as good as the bank which never falls to return dollar for dollar to the depositor New tariffs on coal from the Ohio field went into effect Wednesday as a result ol tbe action of the Hocking Valley in reduc- Ing rates to meet the competition of the West Virginia field The rate to Columbus Is cut from 70 cents to 50 cents per ton the Michigan rate from SI15 to 95 cents and Chicago Illinois rates from 150 to S125 The rates it is said will bo met by competing lines An exchange says of the coal trade It Norlhwestrsection of the country unprepared tbe re ports from many sections being that forty eight hours would exhaust the coal supply on band and and in sight while the reports from some mining communities are to the effect that they are greatly delayed in filling orders tbe delay being ascribed to two causes the shortage of cars for transportation and the scarcity of coal miners As a consequence it is said that some ship pers have advanced their prices from twentyfive to fifty cents a ton Tbe re port of car shortage has been quite fre quent and extensive over practically the greater part of the competitive district though more acute In some parts than others Tbe reports from points in Illi nois Iowa Kansas Kentucky and some other western and southern points are to the effect that miners could find employment if they were obtainable The con ditions briefly described indicate a more healthy condition of mining affairs than have prevailed for a number ofyears and should be and undoubtedly is a source of satisfaction to mine workers and mine owner One unfortunate condition we notice in connection with the business of coal purchasing is the putting off tbe ob taming of the necessary supply untilso late in the season This causes an un seemlyunnecessary unbusinesslike rush at tbe end of the season embarrassing alike to the miner mine owner traffic manager dealer and consumer for it crowds the business that requires six or eight months to do Into two or three The present scarcity of coal and the scarcity of miners In some communities Is not due to anything but an unequal dlvi don of business and employes as tbe fol lowing figures prove Last year 1897 there were 397701 persons employed in und about the mines of the country their average working lime was 178 days and the coal produced In that lime amounted to 20022i6Gs tons tbe largest production in our history An analysis of the above figures proves our assertion that we are not scarce of empboyeoorjcapacity to pro dncecvlt will be sees that we have a pro ductive capacity of 1124343 Ions per day I which would yield us a total for working days excluding Sunday Ihc30GI legal holidays In the year of tons a difference In favor of production over the necessities of consumption of 135231567 tons and the lamentable fact that the vast tonnage possibility is already a serious menace to the profits and wages of those already engaged In the business of mining and shipping coal and would in dicate very forcibly that whatever may be the scarcity of coal at some points at pres enl the remedy does not lie in opening more mines or employing more miners but in a more equal of the work through the seasons St Charles Happenings We are glad to report no happenings of a serious kind over our way Tho toplo of tho lesson Is II Christ nssljPlooInro gospel and tell us why Tohn wroto It In chapter xx 81 ho says concerning his gospel Thcso aro written that yo might bcllcro that Jesus Is tho Christ tho Son of God and that believing yatalght have life through His name Whllo In Matthew Jesus is tho King of tho Jews In Mark tho servant of Jehovah and In Luko tho Son of Man In this gospel Ho is tho Son of God equal with tho Father Tho first phraso takes us to Gen i 1 In tho boo ginning God Tho iiarnaTho Word of God takes its to Gen xv 1 where God appears to Abram as Tho Word of tho LordS Tho KIUIO was In the beginning with God A helpful comment upon this is found In Prey vill 80 and tho context where wo read of tim Word of God under the namo of wisdom as being with God when Ho created nil things rejoicing always before Him and in verso 35 It is written Whoso fintlcth mo flndoth life another parallel with n later part of our lesson John svll 5 is also suggested by this Verso Glorify thou mo with tho glory which I had with Theo before tho world was 3 iAll things were made by Him and without Him was not anything wade that was made This also places tho Son with tho Father In Gen i 1 and is finely corn men ted upon and more fully stated In Col I 10 By Him wcro nil things created that are in heaven and that are in earth all things wcro created by Him and for Him and Ho Is before all things and by Hbu all things consist 4 In Illin was life and tho lifo was tho light of men Ho that hath tho Son hath life nod ho that hath not tho Son of God hath not ilk I John v 12 so that not only Is there life In Him but there is no life apart from Him Ho also is tho light of tho world as Ho said in chapter Till 12 xil 40 and all apart from Him Is darkness so that whllo in Him Is Ufa and light apart from Him is only death and darkness Tho vast majority of the people on earth aro in darkness because tho light has never been brought to them but multitudes who havo heard of tho light will not receive It 5 And tho light shlneth In darkness and tho darkness comprehended it not In tho creation story in Gen I 13 wo read that darkness was upon tho face of tho deep and God said Let there bo light and there was light In II Cor Iv C wo read that God who commanded tho light to shlno out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to glvo tho light of tho knowledge of tbo glory of Gpd in tho face of Jesus Christ 6 There was a man sent from God whoso name was John Jesus was God but John was sent from God Jesus Him self said lit this gospel over 00 times that tho Father sent Him but Ho was sent to reveal tho Father while John was sent to hcmld anti point out tho Christ John was sent as truly as Jesus but each for n dif learnt purpose It is still truo that God gives to every man his work and the ability fnrit 7I I Tho same camo for n witness to bear witness of tho light that all men through Him might believe IllS testimony was that ho was only a voice Ho cried Do hold tho Lamb of God And when men turned from hUn and followed Jesus ho said This my Joy is fulfilled Ho must Increase I must decrease Ho was great in tho sight of tho Lord and of him Jesus said that no greater was born of woman 8 Ho was not that light but was scat to bearwitness of that light When asked if ho was tho Christ ho answered No11 It was his joy to bear witness of tho Christ 0 That was tho true light which light eth overy man that cometh into tho world Ho who said Let there be light Is Himself tho light tho truo light tho only light and beside Him there is no other Thero aro many false lights which only lead teen to destruction All rell glens which have not Christ and His atone meat for their foundation are also and can only lead astray JO He wtis in the world and tho world was made by Him and tho world know Him not Adam and Eve in Eden knew IBm not for they turned away from Him Cain know Illin not for ho turned away front Him Tho antediluvians as a whole with but few exceptions turned from Him After tho dclugo tho people in tho plain of Shlnar turned against Him and when Abram was called to Icavo his homo anti kindred ho was called out from idolaters Josh xxiv 11 Ho camo unto His own and His own received IBm not Ho choso tho land which Ho gavo to Abram Isaac and Jacob to be specially Ills own that Ho might specially bless and cam for It and Ho chose Israel to be a special peoplo unto Himself abovo all people on tho earth that Ho might make Himself known to them anti through them to all nations 12 13 But as many as received Him to them gavo Ho power to become tho sons of God oven to them that believe on His name Hero Is to my mind tho best definition of believing and that is to roo celvo Him as wo receive a gift Tho gift of God is eternal lifo Rom vi 23 How simple that wo should bo required only to accept Him That tbo Creator should become tho Redeemer and by making Him self ono of us work out a salvation which Ho offers to us freely without money or price or desert on our part is surely a wonder of wonders but what shall wo say of thoso who know this and yet turn their backs upon Him There is no room for anything of man In Gods salvation noth ing of birth or attainment or power or might for man has proed himself sinful throughout and an enemy of God Who over will bo saved must bo willing to con less himself a sinner and receive tho Son of God as tho gift of God All such aro born of God born from abovo 14IIAnd tho word was mado flesh and dwelt among us full of grace and troth Tho parenthesis in tho verso says And wo beheld His glory tho glory as of tho only begotten of tho Father God mani test in tho flesh tho Son of God becoming roan partaker of flesh and blood that Ho might show what tuna ought to bo and what redeemed man will be and having no sin of Ills own suffer our sins to bo laid upon Him that Ho might bear them In His own body on tho cross such Is tho mystery of godllncw At tho Present LIne At this time of public excitement and upheaving when all aro thinking and talking almost constantly of tho wax and its results wo must not forget that there is a God upon the throne whoso right and province it is to direct and determine tho destiny of nations as thoJitants of thn earth using this and that nationality for the accomplishment of His purposes All events somehow fur ther tho establishment and extension of His kingdom Ho has permitted tho present crisis for some wise end andI Christians ought to beseech Him to bring out of it such results as vljl bo most for His glory and for the good of humanity Presbyterian To Jx
