Tbe sentiment of tbe people outside of tbe miners, who, to a man, support the action of the governor, is somewhat divided. A prominent Demper cent of tbe ocrat said that seventy-fiv- e people stood by Tanner, while a Republican said that bis action would not be indorsed by the voters if an opportunity were given them for an expression of opinion. An employe of the St. Bernard Company at South Diamond mines says be don't see how a cold wave could improve their business, as for the last few months they have been crowded with orders and tbe mine worked to a full capacity. Tbe coal of 'New South Wales was discovered 100 years ago by a sailor, but it bas only been worked on a commercial basis within tbe last fitly years or so, says tbe Nineteenth Century. Tbe Carboniferous strata of Australia are said to extend over 10,000,000 acres. Tbe coal measures of New South Wales cover about 24,000 square miles, with Sidney In tbe center, although Newcastle is tbe most accessible port for tbe coal fields now being worked. In quality tbe coal of New South Wales is reputedly not much Inferior to that of Northumberland. Last year a very large increase took place in the output, which was raised to 4,417.600 tons from 3.910,000 tons in 1896. About s of the whole output was ex ported to the Pacific State of America, to China, the eastern archipelago, tbe Straits Settlements, tbe Pacific islands and further India. Tbe production bas mote than trebled within tbe last twenty years and as yet is only a fraction of wbat it is destined to become. Before Macaulay's New Zealander makes its appearance on London bridge tbe Newcastle of tbe antipodes will have become as large and prosperous and important a city as Newcastle on "Coaly Tyne." New South Wales does not monopolize tbe coal of Australia. That of Queensland is of enormous value, spread over an area of some 14,000 tquare miles, though as yet tbe output does not exceed 500,000 tons per annum. The miners in some of the outlying Districts of Pittsburg. Pa., have grown tired of contributing 5 per cent of tbeir wages for tbe purpose of assisting and aiding the striking miners in tbe Fourth pool, and last week instituted a vigorous kick. Union officials bad to be called from Pittsburg to quell tbe trouble. Black Diamond. County Supervisors at Council-BluffIowa, bave offered a bounty of $1,000 for tbe discovery and development of a two-fovein and $2,000 for a three-foo- t vein of soft coal in Pottawattamie county. Tho mine must be developed and in successful operation, producing at least twenty-fiv- e tons a day before tbe bounty can be claimed. The mines at Virden and Greenridge, III., operated respectively by tbe Chicago-Virde- n Coat Co., and O'Gara, King & Co., resumed operations last week. Tbe Indiana block coal field is said to be very short of miners. Tbe increass of orders for coke is one of tbe many signs of returning prosperity, and, as was said by a young Democrat a few days ago, it does look as if business is almost always belter under a Republican administration than when tbe Democrats control the government. And yet that same young man always votes the Democratic ticket and says be always will. In order to destroy this majority, the Carter county board, without a resemblance of cause, threw out two Republican precincts, losing to Mr. Pugh 33 majority. On the next day it was discovered that, despite the act of the Carter county board, Pugh still had a majority of 10. Thereupon the Bracken county board was reconvened and they threw out a precinct that gave Pugh 20 majority. Another certificate was then issued. The election board in Rowan county, following tho example set in Bracken, reconvened after signing and mailing its first certificate and deliberately went behind the record of the precinct and threw out 60 of Pugh's majority in that county. Saturday afternoon late a telephone message announced that the store building of the Hecla Coal Company was on fire. Investigation proved that that establishment had a very narrow escape from utter destruction. The fire fortunately timed its appearance by day light, otherwise there would have been no hope. It was caused by fire from a grate in a sleeping room upstairs rolling off and burning through a pine floor. The fire followed along between two joists and the floor and ceiling of the lower story until it found a vent upwards through a partition opposite. When the partition was torn away the flames were found to be about breaking through into the attic, where their spread could hardly have been controlled. Fortunately the first of the fire burned itself through the ceiling of the store room below and sparks were seen falling thus discovering the danger. The damage was slight and covered by insurance. Good work was done by everybody within reach, including a few crack fire fighters of Earlington. How They Sold Their Tobacco Owcnsboro. From tbe Owensboro Messenger. at g, Mr. G. N. The auction house people have a man who drums the stables tor tobacco, and most of the dealers of the city have men who make the rounds of the stables to buy the tobacco which has come in during the night. Mr. Broadley was offered $6, 4 and $1 by one of the buyers, but he declined to take it. The buyer told him to remember that he had been offered $6, $4 and 1, and when his tobacco was sold for less at the auction house he would have have something to kick himself about. Mr. Broadley sold his tobacco at auction, receiving 7.60, 7.50 and $1, a gain of $1.60 on leaf and 3.50 on the lugs. Mr. Nevitt had a very inferior tobacco, and would have been satisfied with $3 and $1, but could get no offers at all. He sold at auction, receiving Both gentlemen $5.15 and $2.
