10 1898 A Light Vote The lightest vote ever polled in the county and congressional dis trict was cast Tuesday We pub lish a practically orrect tabulated vote of Hopkins County by pre cincts and an approximate state ment of the result in the district Of7 course Mr Allen was victorious t S In Hopkins County such apathy prevailed that about two rh thirds of the Republican vote and onehalf of the Democratic vote stayed at home Such are the fruitof dissention in the Repub lican party In Hancock and Henderson counties Mr Jolly received a greater number of votes than didMn Fowler In the other counties of the district Mr Fowler ledExactly I as TilE BEE predicted two weeks ago the situation has worked out The question went to the people handIcappedes pecially for Mr jollyand the Re publicans most of them did not vote at all- There is small comfort In the 1result to the champions of the candidate for whom the machine captured the party device Not even the power of Log Cabin p sufficed to vindicate the course ol T Mr Fowler and the machine Twothirds of the Republicans staid at home Next to a majority of the Republican votes of the dist trict cast against the machine the cmoststinging rebuke that could be k administered was administered by the stayathomes in the present J btcontestcannot be claimed that the absence of the hope to elect the candidate with the Log Cabin accounts for the stayathome vote lie hiust be a sanguine man indeed who would have hoped for the election of the nominee of the ma chute in the Republican party of this district under the most favorable circumstances With everything harmonious and counting the outside vote that Mr Jolly would bavecontrolled had he been 1 given the nomination the people offered him there might perhaps thave been a fighting chance for him Had Mr Fowler staid up when lie got upto withdraw in the Hen derson Convention in favor of Mr Jollyas it is stated on the best auhOdtyhe did dpthe campaign would have been very different and Mr Fowlers political future much brighter But he allowed I himself to be pulled down and his v friends kept him in the race It emains to be seen whether the piccutting wire pullers of the Republican party in the second district will profit by the rebuke just administered by the rank and file of the party but since Chair man Vance did not succeed in passing m in the district committee his resolution to read out of the party I all Republicans who should vote for Mr Jolly our family circle still remains intact and there is hope of healing difference while there is life It does not so much matter about a few puffed up and indiscreet ones who have posed as leaders and lost their way by an overweening s ambition but the great family of the rank and file must not be broken Having not yet been readout of the party and since Mr s Vance seems to be the only leader I who would adopt that plan off strengthening the party there is hope of reconciliation for no one 4 mal can Yankee impudence etc etc are of frequent occurrence These Pharisee subjects of the war lord forget what the French people re member well that Germany at the close of the war of 1870 compelled France September the convict miners at Brushy Mountain Tenn earned 511756- r for the State of Tennessee over the cost of keeping the convicts The great State of Tennessee is making this money at the expense of the coal miners of Kentucky and Ten nessee The coal mined by the convicts is sold so cheaply that the Jellico mines of Kentucky and the Coal Creek mines of Tennessee are almost or quite bankrupted by this competition A criminal is sent to prison presumably for punish ment and reformation Such at least is the object of the law But Tennessee sends her convicts to the prison house for punishment been strong for some months The Southern Live Stock Industry It is difficult for the southern people of the United States to re duce cotton raising from being their largest farm production not withstanding it is at times bound to be an unprofitable crop says the Live Stock Reporter Cot- I ton is about the cheapest crop to sow the longest to mature the most expensive to harvest but it isa cash crop and at the time of planting it always looks more profitable than at the time of the harvest There are many reasons why cotton will always be a great crop in the south and if it has ups and downs so has wheat corn andother crops The difficulty is that too much cotton is raised one year after another and while cot ton raisers all agree that the acre age sown ought to be greatly re duced they are all determined that some one else shall make the re duction while they obtain the ben efit of it and so the reduction is never brought about All the cotton districts are in distress from low prices and all the live stock districts are doing well That is what we hear from the south The natural remark is Why dont the southern people give up raising cotton andraise live stock instead The answer is that the planters cannot so readily jump from one line of business to the other It takes money to buy live stock and it takes time labor and material to turn a cotton farm into even partial use as a stock farm While it is safe to predict that cotton will always be the great staple crop of the south present appearances also indicate that stock raising is becoming more and more a business southand east of the Mississippi than for merly and is finding a place with out causing any violent displacement of any other industry There are thousands of different circum stances which govern individuals in their farming operations and what one cannot do successfully another cannot do at all notwithstanding appearances indicate much the same conditions in both cases But stock raising is a growing industry and it will con tinue to grow The extent to which livestock raising is becoming a southern industry is best exemplified by stating that in nine months of the present year Ala bama Louisiana and Mississippi combined have sent 1200 cars of cattle direct to the market at St Louis besides those that went to people of Texas and the Indian Territory these being finished on other grounds lose their identity before coming to market The significance oi this statement re quires explanation and is given in the assertion that in years gone by a dozen cars of cattle has been a liberal yearly run to St Louis from the three states named The same truths apply to the to bacco crop as to the cotton crop Sam Jones on the Crime- I dont go much on the monu mental crime of 73 I was Every American regiment in our new pos sessions should so demean itself as to merit and receive the good will of the inhabitants November fletcors A writer in the Scientific American says The advance guard of the great November meteor swarm is due this month and on the nights of the 13th 14th and yth astronomers in all parts of the earth will be awake and on the lookout They will be both sur prised and disappointed if a me teoric spectacle which may be a brilliant one is not beheld by some of the watchers The main swarm of the meteors is not due until November 1899 but their advanc ing columns broken into parallels and separated by considerable gaps occupy so much space on the celestial highways they traverse that millions of the mysterious little bodies must already have reached the neighborhood the earths orbit and itcan hardly hap pen that many of these will not become entangled by the terrestrial attraction and dart their fiery spears through the upper air The reader may like to be re minded that this the greatest known meteor slower has a period of thirty three and one quarter years that the history of these meteors has been traced back to the year A D 126 when the planet Uranus is believed to have captured the wanderers and turned them into a permanent or bit around the sun that a comet Tem pels is known to be traveling in the sameorbit with them and that the world was astonished at the magnificence of the displays they made in 1833 and 1866 At their return in 1866 changes had taken place in the array of the meteors indicating a considerable scattering and in November 1897 enormous bodies of them were still rushing across the earths orbit and another splendid display oc curredThe point in the heavens from which the meteors appear to radi ate is situated within the curved blade of the imaginary sickle which marks the constellation Leo This is not well risen until mid night but late in the evening me teors radiating from it may be seen shooting upward from the northeastern horizon Observers are advised to begin watching for them about ii p m on November ii keeping up the watch for five nights altogether and continuing it until the morning twilight begins Fortunately there will be no trouble from the moon which is new on the I3lh I EDUCATIONAL I I CONTRIBUTED BY pARVUSMAGISTER A LITTLE ABOUT HYGIENE The old aphorism Keep your mouth shut and save your life might under certain peculiar cIr- cumstances be susceptible of two renditions But it is of only one that we wish to speak now Bacteriologists tell us that under the most favorable circumstances we inhale within an hour fifteen hundred bacteria and while in large cities within the same time the air that we breathe is charged with from twelve to sixteen thousand of these minute organisms Were these things known and thought of were it known that whenwe breathe through the mouth that these minute organismsa great many at leastfind lodgment on the pharyngeal walls and tonsils and theeby produce diphtheria and other diseases of like characteristics we perhaps would be more particular about how we breathe The mouth has its many things to do but when we use it as an organ through which to breathe if we enjoy healthwe impose up on it a work that does not properly belong to it It was not intended that we should breathe through the mouth as long as we can breathe through the nose Some people sleep with their mouths open If they knew to what extent they endanger them selves they would practice breath ing through the nose until it became habitual and then sleep with their mouths closed v TIlE EARLINOTON FORENSIC SOCIETY Agarn we wish to speak of the Earlington Public School Forensic Society As we have before stated the Society began its career a few weeks rigwith propitious pros poets Prospects arc still favora ble Anybody that was at the last meeting must admit that from a forensicalstandpoint the world about the Earlington Public School is growing better The subject discussed was Re solved that coal has been of more benefit to mankind than gold Both sides handled the subject well surprisingly well for boys and girls but the affirmative side was the winner of the judges decision p After the discussion an interest ing time was had in the election of new officers After many nomina tions and much balloting the fol lowing were elected President Leonard Goodloe Vice President Nannie Ashby Secretary Lelia Dean Assistant Secretary Carrie Atkinson The retiring officers were President John Robinson Vice President Eugene Foster Assistant Secretary Lelia Dean was reelected to fill the position she has filled so admirably hereto foreThe boys and girls displayed the effects of considerable medita tion They also seemed to have been encouraged from places other than school These were pleasing to the projectors of the Society and they only hope that the good work may go onward S AN EDUCATIONAL MEETING On Friday and Saturday Oct 28 and 29 the members of the Educational Association of the Second Congressional District of Kentucky were assembled in Mad isonvilleIt the consensus of opinion of all present that it was one of the most successfuleducational meetings ever held in the Second District The weather was clear and just cool enough to be invig oratingA something about the meeting was the absence of the rural teachers of Hopkins County Hopkins County registered just a few a very few more members than Henderson Several of the faithful of the rural districts were there and more were there than registered but too few too few were there We dislike to say these things about the good teachers of Hopkins but it is true S- It S is to be regretted that a teach was absent They missed an educational treat To the writer it was the most inspiring educational meeting that he ever attended So many good things were said in such a manner that the teacher was glad to say that he was a teachera something he acknowl edges with some trepidation in some circumstances in this coun tryNot only did teachers miss a treat if they were not there but all people who are interested in children miss d a treat if they were not there A speakers words come to the recollection of the writer as he writes which if heeded by some property owners and housekeepers would be of great benefit to the boys and girls The speaker re Jerred to said that even a paling off the fence or a gate off the hinges had a demoralizing effect on the boys and girls That this is true can be seen by those who will meditate concerning it just a moment We had men of national reputa tions in the educational world with us and they delighted and instruct ed us in several ways Even an epitome of the good things said at the meeting would be impossible in this short article But in the future when we have other educa tional meetings whether they be magisterial district county or con gressional district meeting we beg we implore you teachers to be and to State for the present year tal assessment of railroad properly will ex ceed that of last year by perhaps 500000 The reports from railroads throughout the State show a considerable increase in gross endant at church services as was shown st week In the charitable actions of the Bernard officials while rendering the st sad rites to a former trusted employee That the miners are true in death as in was shown last Saturday when In largo numbers they attended the funeral services the late Edwin Phillips Foreman Dan Umstead of the St Ber ard mechanical department was called tot Charles last Saturday to make some- provements in screen there which by reakng had been giving much trouble of teCnoday last week while out fishing it was with some difficulty that the friends of- ecretary Atkinson could quiet him down hen he espied a fivo pound fish playing the water near by At no time In the history of mining in- entucky has there been a greater demand the miner who displays the courage toke an independent stand and labor fore welfare of himself and family and not ntribute to the support of the organizer an now and the men who abhor un sought advice should not falter but stand firm The Hecla Coal Company during the st three weeks have on account of in eased demand for coal increased their force by adding 35 more miners Foreman W A Toombs of tbe St Bernard building said springs to recover his former good health Last week we referred briefly to the illness ill our friend Mr Edwin Phillips and that time we were not aware of his true condition and even his closest regard to tho lass of labor taken to that State totork in the mines To show how far missed the truth when he brings the charge exconvicts against them we quote from GlobeDemocrat this interview with ne who does know what he is talking abouttWhen John Porter spokesman for the A labama colored miners now working at- ana was asked if ho and his fellows ex ected to stay he deliberated a little andr then said slowlyrWe will remain here unless the operators tell us to go If our employers should decide they did not want us longer we ould leave Under no other dream stances will we go We have sworn that each other I really thought being a citizen of the United States I had as much right here as anybody I didnt go out of y country I only changed from oneI ate to another If It takes blood to give i e my rights I am willing to shed ItISeveral of the other colored men stood y while Porter spoke and nodded their I- pproval Porter talked of the character f the men who bad come with him They are good average miners be aid I have been mining a long time nd knew every one of them before I came ere There Isnt a colored miner at- pringside who was a convict in Alabama knew at least thirty of the colored miners who were taken to Virden They were lder miners than these men here are ive of the colored miners who went to irden and who were taken away on ac- ount of the shooting are now working In the Pana mines They are good men I ont know of one In the Virden party who was a prisoner In Alabama A question as to how mining at Pana on he scale refused by the white miners com arcl with Alabama work led Porter to ay I made 860 from 9 oclock last night until ii today Ordinarily I go In the and set my time to make f2 to fj a ay That is all I want to do When I have made that I come out and walkabout The rest of the miners here are doing about as well as that Down in Alabama a miner can make San daybut he must be a good workman to do it This is the best coal to work in I have ever found It is much etter than the Alabama mining Tho only oal down there which Is anything like this is the Blue Creek We colored men- onsider the wages here fair and are satisfied with our treatment One of the Pana operators spoke in commendation of the Alabama miners say- ing they bad shown the ability to get out a higher percentage of lump coal than the white miners bad been accustomed to show Porter
