Mr. Fowler "will probably have the1 'Log Cabin" in each county except Hancock. It is most probable that his mandamus suit to prevent the clerk from putting Mr. Jolly's name un der the "Log Cabin" in that county will be of no effect, and that Mr, Jolly will get the party device there. Thus Fowler will clearly have great advantage of Jolly in the possession of the party emblem, since Republicansas a body are of course averse to voting anywhere than under the device. But with grievances so weighty, and, as they believe, such fraud practiced and such unfair advantage taken by the Fowler campaign managers, Mr. Jolly's friends and those who are opposed to the present party machine will either vote for Mr. Jolly or else lapse into indifference and not vote at all. So there is the danger that only a small Republican vote will be cast for either or both candidates. The Democratic leaders in the district have declared they would do everything possible to keep both candidates on the the track, and under the stances their influence in the matter is not insignificant since the county court clerks arc largely Democratic and they must decide about the arrangement of the ballots. Taking the Statutes of Kentucky there is the best reason for Governor Tanner. the clerks to put Mr. Jolly under Governor Tanner, of Illinois, the Log Cabin, if they should be who assumes to dictate what citi guided in all fairness by the letter zens shall be employed in the of the law and the facts as to mines of that state; who takes pos the time and place of holding the session of railroads and coal mines; An conventions at Henderson. who takes the part of prosecutor, eminent Democratic lawyer read judge and jury; who violates the the law to our own Democratic oath he took to enforce the laws, Clerk of Hopkins county and inand protect all citizens in their terpreted it discovering only one legal rights, is guilty of murder. point that should govern his the He is the cause of decision that of the time and death of the deluded miners at place at which the two conHis words and official Virden. ventions were held. There that the sixteen millions of noncept the has' been war in the courts and union workers in this country have G78,-4821,-15ts more bitter feeling engendered. At the last moment Mr. Fowler declared he was ready to do anything in order to harmonize the party, and he said so to Mr. Jolly's friends. This was at a time when he was about to file his mandamus suit against the clerk of Hancock county court and when an understanding must be immediately reached if at all. Mr. Jolly asked for his proposition to be put in writing so he might know how to consider it. Mr. Fowler declined. Mr. Jolly offered to meet Mr. Fowler on middle ground, at Henderson, that night and discuss the matter and arrive at an understand Mr. Fowler ing and agreement. declined. Thus Mr. Fowler pro tested and protests now, with apparent sincerity, that he was ready to do anything and support anybody to secure harmony even over the protests of his friends. But he refused to make any proposition in definite terms and Mr. Jolly could not consider an indefinite On the other hand proposition. Mr. Jolly declared himself to be ready to do anything in his power to effect harmony and said to the last that he was ready to do what his friends thought best that a man's friends take a clearer view of a matter that concerns him than he does himself. That he was ready to meet .Mr. Fowler half way and do anything in his power to adjust the difference; was ready to get off the track if a candidate could be chosen upon whom the party could harmonize. Of course if Mr. Fowler's proposition had been made so that both candidates should get out of the race unconditionally and leave the selection of a substitute to Chairman Vance such terms would have impossible and been manifestly could but have been declined. Such proposition as that could not be considered a step toward harmony because there are no elements of compromise or harmony in it. Everybody knows what kind of nomination Mr. Vance would have made if left to him. And he himself said in the meeting of the district committee at Henderson that if a substitute candidate became necessary he himself would And Mr. make the nomination. Vance further tried to "resolute" out of the party, at that meeting, all Republicans who might decline to endorse the decision of his committee. Thus no settlement has been reached and the question goes to the people, handicapped as it is. It is likely that Mr. Jolly will get the Log Cabin in Hancock county and Abraham Lincoln's picture in the rest of the district, and that Mr. Fowler will get the Log Cabin in all save Hancock with some other device there. equal rights and much better "Parvus Magistcr" upon educa POLITICAL POINTS. ideas of justice, as justice is de- tional matters in this issue These fined by Pana and Virden organ- questions are of vital importance Col. Now what his been accomplished for tbe good of the miner by the Virden, III., strike? Tbe men have lost thousands of dollars by their refusal to work at old wages, have lost their jobs, and now the mine is to be placed in tho bands of a receiver. We lately had the pleasure of meeting Mr. J. H. Moss, one of the directors of tbe St. Bernard Coal Company, and hearing him relate some interesting facts in connection with the pioneer days of this company. His statement is only a corroboration of all other statements made along tbe same lines, which are that from tbe first a decision was made that their treatment of labor would always bo on a liberal scale, believing it right to live and let live; the payment ot good wages the year round, but suffering no dictation in tbe operation of tbe mines. We understand that the strike at Providence, last week, was caussd by somo unscrupulous fellow catling the men out, un der threats and intimidations, laying him self liable to punishment under the laws and we are pleased to learn that tbe law bearing on that point has been duly exc cuted and the disturbers of peace and bar' mony punished. An Ohio mining expert found an oppor tunity to visit Hopkins county, a few weeks ago, and while bere he closely observed the management and working of the St. Bernard Coal Compiny, and being so deeply impressed by tbo good treatment and order tjiat prevailed bere, be wrote to several papers giving his views as formed on his vist here. There can be little doubt but what tho visit of one of the officials of tbe United Mine Workers, Mr. Scaife will produce good results. This species of vandalism may by some be charitably characterized as "thoughtless." That is the best that can be said. Thounhtlcs or not, it is outrageous. An old Latin proverb says, "It is the part of a fool to say, I did not think.'" It ought not to be any effort to think and think right on a question even of simple rights between the liv ing. Here is a matter of more that property rights and those who have done this thing have not even regarded the sanctity of the dead, but have despoiled their graves of the beautiful offerings of love and hope which have been watered with tho tears of the living and trcllised on their heart strings. Complaint has been made from time to time of this matter and some Earlington friends have been given no little annoyance thereby. It is time it was given public denunciation. Any who will not heed the warning should be prosecuted as the law prescribes. F'wers SOUTH. Speaks in Highest Terms of the Relations of Man to Han in Earlington. In his Sunday night sermon, Rev. James C. Creel, of Misthe souri, who is conducting meeting at the Christian Church, spoke in strains of praise and commendation of the relations of man and man in Earlington. The subject of his sermon was "Pure and undcfiled religion." His text was "Pure religion and undcfiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their aflliction and to keep himself unspotted from the world." He made particular reference to the management of the St. Bernard Coal Company and the men in their employ to the attitude of the men to the company and the He said company to the men. that he had heard before coming to Earlington that the relations were harmonious and a friendly spirit existed. And "lie said that since he had been here he had made it a point to study and investigate) for himself the conditions as they rtally are. He declared that he had found that the attitude of both employer and employe the one toward the other, in their mutual relations, was based on the principles of equity and righteousness He congratulated the men of Earlington and exhorted them to embrace the Christian religion, upon the principles of which he had found Earlington people to rest their relations to their fellow men. ries, already bountifully supplied with choice volumes and periodicals, have been received. At that meeting great enthusiasm was manifested in the organization. The organization was as nearly according to established parliamentary law as the organizer and circumstances could make it. A good corps of officers was elected and a program for the next meeting arranged. In this manner the long or short career of the society was begun. The society was organized primarily for the pupils of the Public School. The good that the children may derive from this society is easily seen by those who will cogitate concerning this thing just for a few moments. But the children need encouragement, and a kindly word from father, mother, sister or brother from those whom they love, is very encouraging to the school boy or school girl. When one ceases to think, he not only thinks poorly and slowly when he thinks again, but, to a certain extent, he loses the ability to think at all. Have you ever thought of these things? In the battle of July 3 off Santiago one man was killed and there were eleven casualties altogether. In that fight also every one of the wounded returned to duty. The loss suffered in the attack upon the forts at the entrance to Santiago by the American fleet on June 22 was one sailor killed and eleven men wounded, of whom seven were able to return to duty.
