AddresstltOfPartICUtItd THURSDAY OCTOBER 27 1898 The Congressional SituationiSI 5 The die is cast Both candi dates will run through Mr Fowler will probably have thoLog Cabin in each county except Hancockt It is most probable that his mandamus p suit to prevent the clerk S from putting Mr Jollys name un i der the Log Cabin in that county will be of no effect and that Mr Jolly will get the party device i 4there Thus Fowler will clearly have great advantage of Jolly m the possession of the party emblem since Republicansas a body are of course averse to voting anywhere than under the device But witI grievances so weighty and as they believe such fraud practiced andI k such unfair advantage taken by the Fowler campaign managers Mr Jollys friends and those who are opposed to the present party maI chine will either vote for Mr Jolly r or else lapse into indifference and not vote at all So there is the danI ger that only a small Republican vote will be cast for either or both 5 candidates The Democratic lead ers in the district have declared they would do everything possible 5 to keep both candidates on the the track and under the circum stances their influence in the mat k ris not insignificant since the county court clerks arc largely Democratic and they must decide about the arrangement of the bal lots Taking the Statutes of Kentucky there is the best reason for the clerks to put Mr Jolly under the Log Cabin if they should be guided in all fairness by the letter of the law and the facts as to 1tk 4 the time and place of holding the conventions at Henderson An t eminent Democratic lawyer read the law to our own Democratic 4Clerkof Hopkjns county and interpreted Itdiscovering only one hpoint that should govern his that of the time and place at which the two con ventions were held There could I be no dispute on this point The newspapers reported it trulyt and everybody who or who heard about the conventions knew and knows now that the con S vention that nominated Mr Jolly was held at the time and place and was held continuously without interruption and that the Fowler5 convention was not fullly organ ized and did not transact business S until some three hours or more S after the time and place named in the call But as this lawyer said to the clerk you can decide as you please There is no liability attached to your action The Democratic leaders have decided it S is to their interest that Mr Fow ler go under the Log Cabin and the Democratic County Clerks 0 have conferred together and agreed to put it there Attempts Ijave been made tot settle the dispute amicably and heal the breach but without RepubliL harmony before the individual in f terests of anyone man Mr Jolly made an effort to prove the de sires of the Republicans of the dlsI trict by submitting the questionj again to the people He definite and unequivocal proposition a in writing and one that was t pronounced as eminently fair event by some of Mr Fowlers best friends Stich resubmission would havei been fair alike to the two dates and the result would have- ncSL been the verdict of the peo pie but it would have been4 inimical to the party machine Mr Fowlers best friend in the distrIctand he declined to ac- c the terms proposed Theret has been war in the courts and k more bitter feeling engendered- At the last moment Mr Fowler he was ready to do any ing in order to harmonize the party and he said so to Mf Jollys This was at a time when e was about to file his mandamus uit against the clerk of Hancock curt and when an under standing must be immediately reached if at all Mr Jolly asked or his proposition to be put in writing so ho might know how to consider it Mr Fowler declined Mr Jolly offered to meet Mr Fowler on middle ground at Hen erson that night and discuss the matter and arrive at an understanding and agreement Mr Fowler declined Thus Mr Fowler pro tested and protests now with ap parent sincerity that he was ready to do anything and support any body to secure harmony even over the protests of his friends But he refused to make any proposition in definite terms and Mr Jolly could not consider an indefinite proposition On the other hand Mr Jolly declared himself to be ready to do auything in his power to effect harmony and said to the last that he was ready to do what his friends thought bestthat a mans friends take a clearer view of a matter that concerns him than he does himself That he was ready to meet Mr Fowler half way and do anything in his power to adjust the difference was ready to get off the track if a candidate could be chosen upon whom the party could harmonize Of course if Mr Fowlers propo sition had been made so that both candidates should get out of the race unconditionally and leave the selection of a substitute to Chair man Vance such terms would have been manifestly impossible and could but have been declined Such proposition as that could not be considered a step toward harmony because there are no elements ot compromise or harmony in it Everybody knows what kind of nomination Mr Vance would have made if left to him And he himself said in the meeting of the district committee at Henderson that if a substitute candidate became necessary he himself would make the nomination And Mr Vance further tried to resolute I out of the party at that meeting all Republicans who might decline to endorse the decision of his com mitteeThus no settlement has been reached and the question goes to the people handicapped as it is It is likely that Mr Jolly will get the Log Cabin in Hancock county and Abraham Lincolns picture in the rest of the district and that Mr Fowler will get the Log Cabin in all save Hancock with some other device there- Governor Tanner Governor Tanner of Illinois who assumes to dictate what citi zens shall be employed in the mines of that state who takes pos session of railroads and coal mines who takes the part of prosecutor judge and jury who violates the oath with the best white men of the nation at San Juan upholding the honor of the flagl The people of Illinois should impeach this governor and try him for murder and epitaph should read Here lies demagogue governor who per ured his oath for votes and found hangmans noose The miners at Pana and Virden had a right to strike but when they took up arms o prevent other men from working they became outlaws just as train robbers are outlaws Every man- n this country has a right to work for the wages that pleases him and- o man or body of men has the right to prevent As well rob a train or a bank of editors and printers and an opportunity to consider soberly andearnestly things good for the newspaper and the printing office Members arc often unable to go on a long pleasure jaunt and arc forced visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep him self unspotted from the world He made particular reference to the management of the St Ber nard Coal Company and the men in their employto the attitude of the men to the company and the company to the men He said that he had heard before coming to Earhngton that the relations were harmonious and a friendly spirit existed And he said that since he had been here he had made it a point to study and investigate for himself the conditions as they rtally arc He declared that he had found that the attitude of both employer and employe the one toward the other in their mu tual relations was based on the principles of equity and righteousness He congratulated the men of Earlington and exhorted them to embrace the Christian society was organized pri manly for the pupils of the Public School The good that the chil dren may derive from this ociety is easily seen by those who will cogitate concerning this thing just for a few moments But the children need encouragement and a kindly word from father mother sister or brother from those whom they love is encouraging to the school boy or school girl Try giving a kindly word to that boy or girl In each there may be an embryonic orator or statesman K PATRONS ATTENTION PLEASE Artists tell us that their hands dull when they cease to use them for a few days Not only do their hands dull but the artistic sense dulls They not only lack ability to execute the pictures they have in their minds but they lack ability to form the pictures in their minds Whereby had they not ceased to work they would not have expe rienced these difficulties We are told that in order that we may think may think wellwe must think almost continually When one ceases to think he not only thinks poorly and slowly when he thinks again but to a certain extent he loses the ability to think at all Have you ever thought of these things Have you ever thought of the fact that that child of yours whom you keep out of school a day or two in each week loses the ability to a certain extent to think or study each tune that you keep him out I tear you have not Otherwise why is that child of yours out of school so often You want your child to be intel ligent You want your child to progress iii his studies and keep up with his classmates You keep him out of school or permit him to stay out of school He fails to progress in his studies and keep up with his classmates and then you blame the teacher On whom docs the education of your child depend the more On yourself or on his teacherYou had as well feed the child four days in a week and let him fast three days in a week and expect him to develop physically as to send him school three days and him keep out two daysorsend him to school two weeks and keep him out one week and expect him to develop mentally The rearing of that child of yours is a sacred duty The great Re cording Angel fails not to record anything Are you doing all in your power to prepare that child for a higher a better and a nobler life Do you converse with him and tell him the benefits of regularity of attendance at school Do you tell him that you are interested in him that you desire that he be a personage of whom you will be proud Does he really know that you arc interested in his future Or do you permit him to do as he pleases Do you permit him to go to school when he wishes and stay at home when he wishes From the way some attend school it is to be inferred that it is a matter in which they only arc interested and they do not realize the value of their time They still seem to think that they can while away their youth and become intelligent after they become men What a pitywhat a great pity it is that so many have to become old before they realize the golden opportunities of youth Then it is too late too late Parents do you feel that you lost some of the golden opportunities of youth If so why not have that child avoid the mistakes you made Concerning the things herein spoken of ponder The writer only wishes he could place before your minds in letters of astral fire the fact that so many boys and girls in Earlington are losing opportuni ties golden opportunities day after day Opportunities that are hot golden merely because the teacher could place them before the pupils and enable them to grasp them but opportunities that are golden because they could grasp them themselves were they only in school more PARVUS MACISTER Lost A gold blue enameled Christian Endeavor pin Please return to NANNIE StoKfes Mrs Y Q Walker and to the Working Classes Fromtho Madison Wis Journal The political history of the last fewyears demonstrates beyond con troversy that the Republican party is the friend of labor and that in the advocacy of its principles and the enforcement of its policies he the best interests of the workinj classes Under the operations of the McKinley law and during the Harrison administration labor seco1dinauguration passage of the Wilson Tariff bill industry was crushed and the workman thrown out of employ ment We all sadly remember the panic of iSg3that almost overwhelmed the nation and the poverty stricken condition of the idle thousands who filled the streets of the great cities and who were found everywhere begging for bread The stories of idleness and poverty and hunger are fresh in the memories of us all During the entire time of Clevelands second administration and the exist ence of the Wilson law there was depression and distress throughout the entire country In 1896 with the election of McKinley and the repeal of the Wilson Tariff law came better times The operation of the Din ley Tariff bill has brought em ployment to thousands in many cases advanced wages and given a general impetus to the business of the country Today the nation after its prostration brought on by Democratic policies is splendidly convalescent In every depart ment of business there is renewed activity and hope No man with ordinary intelligence who will give the subject consideration can fail to see that the policies of the Re publican party have been most beneficial to public and private interests The Democratic party has proven a failure The delusive theories of the silverites and Populists have been happily avoided The Republican party has carried out its promise of Pro tection to American industries The results of such Protection are at hand and with the other and further efforts toward betterment of the condition of the great army of workers are offered in evidence Yellow to Paul In tho night There stood a man of Macedonia and prayed him saying Como over into Macedonia and help us And after ho had seen the vision immediately wo endeavored to go into Macedonia assuredly gathering that tho Lord had callod us to preach the gospel unto them Acts xvi 810 This incident In Pauls lifo is very instructive from a missionary standpoint Ho is at Troas in tho western part of Asia Minor on his second great missionary Journey In a vision an in habitant of historic Macedonia of Eu rope calls to him for holp Ho sees in tho vision also a call from God Immo diately ho obeyed it Ho went to Mace donia and his preaching produced bless ed results The Christians duty toward missions is hero pointedly illustrated It says Go or send It Why should wo go or send Three reasons moved Paul to action and theso three reasons appeal to us today 1 Tho call from Macedonia for help Paul must havo been greatly touched by this pathetic appeal for the gospel Ho was intensely anxious to take tho gospel to all who wanted it Macedonia heathen domfs coIling to us today Not ono man but millions of human beings in Africa India China and the islands of tho sea aro calling for help They need Christ and they want Christ Can we refuse their cry 2 Tho call from God Paul saw in tho vision a call from God Every cry for help in this world is a call from God God has opened the doors of tho heathen world nnd commands to go in and win tho lands for Christ God calls us to missionary work Cnn we refuse to oboy God 3 Paul could go Ho went immediately because it was possible for him to do so Wo can go or send This should decide for us Perhaps wo can go If our church boards cannot send us perhaps we can go and pay our own uxpciisos No young man or woman who has tho means and tho way clear to do so could uso both soil or means to a bettor purposo But if cannot go we can send A wealthy young man in ono of our colleges studying to 10 a missionary supported a man actually on tho field as his substitute until ho himself was pro pared to go If as individuals wo may not bo able to havo a missionary repro senting us on the field perhaps us so cieties wo could do so A number of societies have thoir representatives on tho foreign field and many many others could support at least a natlvo worker or educate a boy or girl for fu turo missionary work Tho cost is not great Tho secretary of your denomina tional missionary board could give all tho information desired upon this sub ject If however wo cannot do this nil of us can give something and wo should liberally and systematically for sending thoso who can go if wo cannot Bible Verses Isa 1117 Nah i15 Math xxiii 37 xxviii 10 20 Luke xiv 1024 Aotai 11 xiii 13 Item i 1417 x 14 1C I Cor ix 1022 Rev xxii 17 Task Xnouch Oar own faults and failures would supply ono would think Buflloiont pangs of penitence to occupy that part of conscience which is devoted to lament over shortcomings Few of us have reached that happy stato of perfection in which we can give over repentance Wo have to watch our own conduct guard against temptation aud when overcome confess our sins to our heavenly Father with heartfelt sorrow Con science holds a rod to check us when erring and to drlvous In thu right way should the kindly impulse of duty fail to allure us and when we reject the rod conscience becomes a ecourgo to punish us with remorse for our dis obedience This is task enough for con science Indopeii dent To llo Jlliwrublo- Thiul ilut yourself uhoot what you vaut w 1 1 nwinit IiI lt nght t- oplll yin ull vot iwcple tuink o- American food stuffs abroad and a heavy ex port movement of wheat and corn has already begun Nearly all of Europe is in want of American wheat Crops over there prove to be even shorter than was supposed the Russian deficiency being un expectedly large So we shall continue to feed the foreigners out of our abundant surplus and we shall not lake our pay in manufactured goods as was the case to a large extent un der the FreeTrade policy of 1893 97 and would be again if the Dingley duties now prevailing did not shut off payment in goods The difference in the operation of the two economic politics was illustrated during the fiscal year ended June 30 1898 when we scored a favorable merchandise balance of over 615000000 of which a large portion must be set l fed in coin or its equivalent in credit balances offsetting interest on foreign capital invested in the United States dividends on American securities held abroad settlement of charges for the transportation of American commerce in foreign ships etc etc This year the trade balance continues to mount up and again it will have to be adjusted in cash for reasons already stated IMr Jno H Moss of New York Mr H B Hanson of Saratoga
