Calls a Spade a Spade Ninety Per Cent of Republicans of Webster for Jolly Dixow KY Sept 9 1898 HON EUGENE C VANCE- HAWESVILLE KY DEAR SIR Replying to your letter of the 8tb inst in which you invite me to be present at a meeting of the district committee at the Rudd House in the city ot Owcnsboro at 9 oclock a m on the 12th inst will say that I can not see any possible good that would result from such a meeting but think I can see how it might be fraught with great harm to the party The committee would doubtless stand as it didat Hen derson some of the county chair men disregardingor rather regard ing with contempt the expressed wish and will of the majority by voting against the choice of the party Since my return home from the Henderson Convention I have seen and talked with a great many of the Republicans of Web ster County and I am satishcd that 90 per cent of the Republi cans of the county are for Jolly and would refuse to vote for Fow leI even if Jolly were to withdraw from the race so thoroughly aroused and indignant are they over the highhanded outrage per petrated by the Revenue gang at Henderson to foist upon them a man they had instructedagainst The republicans of this county will not consent for Mr Jolly to with draw from the race nor will they submit to his being forced off either by the District committee or the State Central committee There now remains but effort on the part of the Revenue power with all of it promises of reward Mr Jolly has been declared by the real Republicans through their duly and lawfully elected delegates as their nominee for Congress from this district and it is the duty of all good and true republicans to recognize and support him as suchHow can those who support Mr Fowler make any claim or pre tense to honesty and fair dealing in the face of their conduct at Henderson in counting the 15 delegate votes from Webster for Mr Fowler when it was known by everybody that those delegates had been instructed to and had already cast their vote for Mr Jolly Why my dear sir when the delegates from the various precincts in this count met in Dixon on the 22nd of August 1898 and cast their votes as previously in structed by the voters the major ity was so pronounced and the treatment of Mr Fowler and his supporters was so fair and honorable that Mr Fowlers leader in this county made a motion to make the instruction for Mr Jolly from this county unanimous which was done And yet disre garding all this men without any authority with the knowledge consent and aid of Mr Fowler and his leaders at Henderson had the unmitigated gall to declare and count this county for Fowler After all this how can it be claimed that Jolly or the pedple have been fairly treated or that there is any ground upon which we can treat week adjourned on Tuesday night The conference was at tended throughout by a large delegation from allover Kentucky and there were numerous visitors pres ent from other States The session has been presided over by Bishop C C Pettey of North Carolina who is one of the most eminent and earnest workers for the improvement of his race inI America Bishop Pettey has thei highest regard for the people of the South and in a speech on opening evening told his colored brethren they were most fortunate in liavjng their homes in the South and advised them to remain there saying there was nothing in the
