Some of the listeners asked the young man how the troopers of the Ninth and Tenth cavalry conducted themselves. They are all right, boys, and the army today does not contain two regiments of fighters superior to the Ninth and Tenth cavalry." Irom the This compliment wounded trooper of the Sixth was repeated by an officer of the Rough Riders and by Lieut. Trull, of the Seventy-firs- t New York. The colored men were always to be found where the whimper of lead was fiercest, and never once did they falter. These regiments intended before leaving Tampa to make the black man respected in the army. The men had talked and mentally speculated on the course they would pursue should an opportunity present itself. We'll be with you," said one of the Ninth one day in Franklin street to a trooper of Roosevelt's Rough Riders, "All right, old man," returned the cowboy, "but we'll lead you a hell of a hot dance." "Never you mind that, boy," said the colored man, displaying a whole quarry of gleaming teeth; "we can stand the heat, and we'll be right up there with you when the lead begins to sing." And they were. In every assault the dusky faces of the colored cavalrymen could be seen, and tonight they are being paid compliments that any regi ment in the army would be proud to listen to. The verdict of Shatt er's army in Cuba is that the colored men are all right. Tampa letter to the Boston Herald. An Elegy on the Death of Air. 5. E. Stevens. The boarding house of Dr. P. B. Davis was entered and two watches were taken. Mrs. Davis was awakened by the thief conducting an active search beneath her pillow. She raised an alarm and the thief fled. A search was instituted and two silver watches, one belonging to Dr. Davis the other to Wm. Hewlett, were missing. Nothing else was taken. Entrance was gained through a rear door. The thief had removed his shoes before entering and retreated quickly and almost noiselessly at the first cry. The hotel kept by Mr. DeVylder was also entered and the room of John Crowder, a painter, was in vaded. Mr. Crowder awoke and found the gentleman of thieving propensities investigating his pock ets. He vehemently protested against such conduct and the man ran out on a porch roof and leaped the ground. Crowder sustains a loss of 51 cents by the visit and will probably be able to continue business at the old stand, notwithstanding his heavy loss. Moscow Croft is heroically trying to break the prevailing high cattle market. About two months since his riches were greatly increased by tho arrival of a small calf of the Taurus gender and Croft's heart beat with joy way up in the vicinity of his collar button as he contemplated that little bovine as a source of revenue. After a long and thorough study of the subject, Croft concluded that the call was not specially qualified for dairy purposes, but would pay bet ter as a beef venture and to this end he has devoted his time and energy. At first he allowed the calf half the milk, but minum taurus lost flesh, then-hallowed the cow and calf to run rogcther, but still it declined. A second cow was put in the lot and the calf got all the milk and the Crofts drank coffee and water, still the calf continued to fail. Two neighbors came to the rescue and contributed liberal quantities of milk each day. Meanwhile Croft taught the calf to eat and three times per day he gives it an adult dose of brat Hash, but in spite of all his efforts ti.o calf has fallen away until it is no thinner than circus lemonade and istcad of casting a shadow a brigl t spot accompanies it when the sua is shining. She was tbe center from which emanated kindness, tenderness and love, to whom the children looked for counsel, comfort and sympathy, and the husband, for love, devotion and consolation. lint she has gone from tba (rials and tribulations of earth to Ibe land of tbe blessed, and while her melodious voice can never more dispense tbo timely admonitions, nor give the lender reproof tbat only a mother can minister, yet may thit soft gentlfl voice linger upon Ibe ear, and tbe wholesome advice of an affectionate, loving moiber remain fresh in Ihe memory of those left behind through all tbe shifting scenes and changing vicissitudes of life as a monitor lo warn them of the dangers of consuming sin and the allurements ot the evil one. Mrs. Hardwick became a member of tbe United Baptist cburch in 1886, and since then has been a faithful and devout Chris-iian- , shedding tba sweet fragrance of Christian lovo to all around. The life of a sin cere, loyal Christian is always known and felt in a vicinity and the community realizes a great loss at their departure.
