Engineer Wanks, of South Diamond mine, was among those who celebrated tho Glorious Fourth at this place, Monday. Mr. Uoardman, of tho Carbondalo mino made a brief visit here last Monday while en route to the Hvansville celebration. Miners from different parts of the county were out in force to celebrate here last Monday. A day's outing is always highly appreciated by them. Last year the great coal strike originated in Pennsylvania, and now there are several mines on a strike in that region. Where will tho trouble end? We are informed that two more organizers and agitators were in our midst last week, but they have found their labors among our miners arc spent in vain. Superintendent Salmon, of the Crabtree Mines, came over last Monday and spent a portion ot the day with relatives and "" friends here celebrating. Ot course the St. Bernard Coal Company had no control of the weather, yet they did all in their power toward making the big 4th of July picnic a grand success. The question of a sufficient coal supply still continues to be a perplexing one to the Spanish navy, as shown last week when they were tied up on account of a scarcity of fuel. II. M, Adcock, formerly an employe of the L. & N., at this place, has accepted a position with Mr. T I Liar nes, near N'ebo, who operates a small coal mine near that place. Happy indeed was the St. llcruard Company's chief official on the day we celebrated wticn the glorious news came in from Sampson, staling that be had completely annihilated Cervera's fleet. Occasionally you hear of a Spanish sympathizer, but we have yet to hear of ajcoal miner in these regions so expressing himself. Ay an indication of the business done by the railroads in tho South on account of tho war, a trainload ot cartridges alone was recently shipped to Tampa. Fla , by way ot Savannah, Ga., which comprised ten cars. It is an evident fact that the government has on a small scale taken possession ot and is now operating a short road In Cuba. This is according to the Popu-listi- c platform, yet wo are afraid the populist will not goto Cuba even if their ideas aro carried into effect. Here is what an able writer in the Manufacturer's Record has to say about the great prejudice that' lias heretofore existed in the South against corporations. "You think, then, that the South has been greatly retarded In its progress by thn prejudice against corporations?" "I know it. I have felt it. I see it wherever I go. Tako the railroads for illustration. Tho South needs more of them. There are sections ot the South that are fifty or sixty miles from a rail Of course, these sections would road. give a large portion of their lands to have a railroad built through them, but can It be expected that any additional railroads will bo built in those States where the public men and legislatures are doing everything in their power to destroy the railroads already in existence? This vicious sentiment, so disastrous to all progressive movements, is also, I think, on the decline. Let us hope that wherever intelligence rules and ambition for a higher development prevails and a sense ot justice presides, this prejudice against railroads may be softened to the point whero equal and exact justico may be meted out to the greatest creative agencies known to mankind. Of the 1,0093 miles ot railroad constructed in the United Slates during the first six months of ibis year, three-fifth- s of the mileage was built in tho states west of tbo Mississippi and all but 80 miles of this in the southern halt ot the section. Some 37S miles were built In ten states south of the Ohio river and east ot the Mississippi. With the exception ot five miles in Maine not a mile was built in the New England States. In the southwest Alabama heads the list with 125 miles, then follow Missouri 94 milts, Louisiana 78 miles. New Mexico 71, California and North Carolina 65 miles, Texas 63 miles, Georgia Cz miles and Oklahoma Territory Gl miles. Kentucky does not have a showing In this estimate for the reason that this kind of enterprise encounters serious discouragement in this state Political piracy runs rampant and delights to center its assaults particularly on tbo railroads. All the forces of rapine and party blackmail in the democrat and populist organizations y are exerted at every session of tho legislature to the Injury of railway investments, although there is great need of new or extended lines to open undeveloped resources. Kentucky has a total railway mileage ot 3,045, with but an increase of 31 miles in One fourth ot the counties are 1S97 without railway facilities. In spite of the fact that they are fruitful of ore, timbtr and agricultural products, but substantially useless because inaccessible. Railroads aregreat educators. As tbey open the way to the mattock in the minr, e the plow in the field or the In the dell, for the complete development of burled or neglected riches, the feuds disappear, and school houses stand whero the illicit still stood. Capital is not unmindful of these advantages, but It fears the attacks of the political brigands who lie in wait for it In the legislative balls. Kentucky is bountiful and it will be marvelous In product as soon as it is saved from official highwaymen. Ken-luck- lMggj MADISONVILLE, KY. J"YOUR MONEY DAOK IF YOU WANT IT. The dedication of Bethany church on Rose Creek road near Nebo. that was announced in last week's Bek to be held last Sunday, July 3, actually took place on the above day and date. Rcy. S. W. Schclton, Presiding Elder of the Green River District, M. E. Church, Kentucky Conference, delivered the dedicatory sermon, text, Acts, 1 chap., 4V., "Wait for the promise of the Father." The sermon was grand, and abounded in rich thought and soul food. About 1000 people were present and dinner was served on the ground. In the afternoon the church was formally dedicated to God, alter which the sacrament of the Lord's was administered to a great many communicants. The thanks of the membership of that church arc extended to all friends who assisted in the erection of the church and who contributed in the collection taken on that day. Among those in attendance from Earlington were, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Toombs, Mr. and Mrs. Rady Peyton, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Harris, Mrs. Long, Mrs. Larmouth and others. July 4, 1898, is one day long to be remembered in Earlington. The and barbecue given by the A. O. U. W. lodge, of this place, had been well advertised, and early in the day the people began to pour in here on trains, in wagons, buggies, on horseback, on icot and any and every kind of a vehicle was used to get here, even to the bicycle. Early in the morning it was seen that the crowd would be the largest that had ever visited Earlington, and the members of Hopkins Lodge were feel ing jubilant over the fact that they had made preparations for such a vast multitude, and knew that each and every one would enjoy themselves and find plenty to. cat. The parade, headed by the St. ucrnard liana, tool; place on schedule time, and the lodge mem bcrs after marching through the principal streets, marched to the beautiful Lakeside Park where the day's festivities began and continued until late in the night. The hard rain in the morning kept a great many people away from the park, but in the afternoon it was very pleasant, and in a short while the picturesque spot was full of visitors. Liberal estimates place the num-o- f visitors at about 5,000, and red, white and blue neckties, Dewey badges, buttons, flags and other novelties were seen everywhere, while Old Glory was floating in conspicuous places, all of which showed that the people were filled with patriotism and made it a day long to be remembered. The hacks and other vehicles had all they could do carrying the people to and from the park. Until late in the night they were kept running, bringing the immense crowd back, and everyone returned home pretty much tired out, but proud of the day, proud of their grand country, and proud of the good news received during the day. Long will this Fourth be remembered. pic-ni- c Madisonvillc on his return from Washington for examination for Surgeon in the U. S. army. Dr. Rash applied for the appointment some time ago, and about two weeks since was ordered to Washington for examination, with about twenty-fivother applicants for the same position. Dr. Rash had a good record at the medical schools of Louisville and New York. He made great progress in Madisonvillc as a practicing physician and though young, yet because of his record as a student abroad and at home and his progress as a physician and his upright walk as a gentleman, none wonder at his appointment.
